      They were a lot more thematic and atmospheric in my opinion, though I agree that from a gameplay perspective they weren't very well designed

    That village swamp map looks so cool with the elevated boardwalk above the mud. They have to bring that back!

    The fact the unpublished Yamaoka Estate maps look better than the ones currently in the game is insane. I prefer the orange hues for sure, feels way more aesthetically pleasing.

      The Yamaoka Estate rework never made sense to me, especially since Sanctum of Wrath was released in 3.4.0 and the realm was reworked in 4.2.0, which means that the Sanctum of Wrath wasn't even in the game for a year before it got reworked

      @@sashko8448 That's insane. Every time I see an old DBD video of the maps, I'm like, can we get this version back? Same with Badham to be honest, those original maps look more interesting? Some of the design choices just don't feel great. Same with Haddonfield. Haddonfield is like a highway, not a street.

      I think they still keep their old assets even after the reworks (or at least I hope so). The Haddonfield rework was probably made with the intention of reflecting modern day american 'strodes'

      It's the case with all games, usually more ambitious content is first to be cut because it's the hardest to make work, or they run into unforeseen problems

      Unfortunately that's just game development. You start with a much bigger idea and over time it gets cut down for many reasons. The biggest appeal of beta content is almost always just the idea rather than whatever broken code is left behind.

    From what I've heard, there's also Ringu unreleased map (I think the one from the trailer). A fishing village or something like that. Apparently, they designed the map and decided to not ship it, because its gameplay felt very similar to one of the currently (at the time) realeased maps. But I assume they still have it saved somewhere, so there's still hope we will get it one day.
    Also, there's a theory that game was supposed to have another killer among release 3, which was supposed to be some kind of mechanic (he shows up on promotional image). Theory is that devs got Myers license before game even released and that character got scrapped and turned into current Myers. And because of that his realm was given to Wraith. I think the license they got probably forced them to release Myers within set period of time, so they had to release the game eariler than planned, hence the changes to Wraith, unreleased Swamp etc.
    Other theory I could find possible is that the mechanic killer from Autoheaven was the one with destructive power capable of removing shack etc. And when they scrapped the idea, they were left with empty killer slot for finished realm (Autoheaven), while having finished killer (Wraith). So they pushed Wraith to replace that removed killer, then later on the road they reused mechanic assets into Myers. Which was fine for them, because Wraith's realm (Swamp) wasn't finished on time, while he was.
    But I guess we'll never know the answer for those. We just have devs word on that. At least he confirmed that Wraith wasn't supposed to be in Autoheaven originally, and stuff like that in development often means something drastic must have changed, like completely scrapping one killer or being forced to create Myers fast. But at least thanks to that we've got Hag (or Huntress), because either Hag wasn't even an idea when Wraith was pushed earlier, or Hag was supposed to be part of Red Forest, as some kind of Baba Yaga type of monster. Also I kinda wonder how much of mechanic's original lore just got dumped on Wraith and how much Wraith's lore was placed on Hag instead.

      The Ringu map was only considered, but the developers decided not to make it because it would have been too similar to Coldwind. As for the other things you mentioned, I recommend you check out MintSkull's videos about Wraith and the Crawler, he goes really in depth in those ones

    0:36 TECHNICALLY! skull merchants map is just addititions to shelter woods (which is what it is still called), whose big landmark was the massive tree, which appears a couple seconds later in the footage (and even still exists on the map today) so i'd argue its still generally in there

    They should add gamemodes on larger maps because the big maps make so much more sense, with it being a whole farm with a house and a abbatoir etc. Oh and they need to bring back the big scary tree, massive sewer pipe and village maps because they are so cool

      Exactly! Different map shapes are something that has largely not been experimented with and these unreleased ones are so interesting, especially the Ormond one which has a U shape

    My guess, based on what the devs said so far and what we found, is that Wraith had a version of Hag's lore while inhabiting Backwater Swamp. Azerov was the one supposed to inhabit Autohaven Wreckers and be an original version of Michael Myers, but they had to scrap him since they secured the Halloween License. Then they did what they did for the release. Most likely Nurse, Nea and Crotus Prenn Asylum was also supposed to be released in the original version, but time constrains didn't allow them to do it. This seems to be the reason why Hag was created for backwater swamp later on and Nurse, Nea and the Asylum released as a free DLC.
    So in their original designed, there were supposed to be 5 killers (Trapper, Wraith, Hillbilly, Myers from Wish and Nurse), 5 survivors (Dwight, Meg, Claudette, Jake and Nea) and 5 big maps (MacMillan Estate, Backwater Swamp, Coldwind Farm, Autohaven Wreckers and Crotus Prenn Asylum).
    I would love to see the game as they invisioned at the start, just to look at how they wanted the game to be on release. With the original version of Myers, I mean.

    I would love for there to be a gamemode where we play on the huge maps. It would make the map feel a lot more open and could be fun with other changes

    A watch tower map would have been amazing I hope they experiment with it. I love verticality in maps.

      Verticality in dbd maps is something that has largely not been experimented with and I think it would be interesting to have more vertical gameplay in dbd however some killers like the artist really struggle with that aspect

    Since you’re really good with your research, I have a really tough case for you to crack- back in 2018/19 I played against a hacker (public match) that loaded all survivors onto a custom/unused swamp map that is none of the ones you mentioned. I’ve tried so hard to find what it was or how a killer could load us into a map of their choosing , but I’ve found literally nothing, all I have to work with is the map code and a short clip of it

    would've been really cool and made more sense to have estates or farms share all their buildings in close proximity.

    I was wondering who Autohaven was originally for and it's neat to realize that it was The Smasher's realm before they were cut. The Smasher was an early Killer whose ability would have been to straight up destroy parts of the map but ultimately cut due to how difficult it would be to both balance such a power but design maps around it.

    This explains why they're taking so long to rework the Backwater Swamp. My guess is they're planning to have more than two variations and bring some of the unreleased versions into the game

    The original realms being larger map with all the land marks from each version is pretty cool, It doesn’t work for how dbd is but it’s still neat to see. Maybe a map like this could work if we ever get that 2v8 game mode.

    My theory for the huge maps were that it was a test maps to see how the structures look in game and make sure they functioned properly with the Collision.

    OMG WAIT I'M THERE HIIIII. so apparently i was REALLY wrong😭😭 i got my info from @DStrike (which is another dead by daylight youtuber). in one of his videos from january were he showcased the ormond rework i asked him where the swamp rework is (as it was originally supposed to come with that mid-chapter) and he said that it was moved to march. and i thought that he meant that it was going to come with this new chapter (as it's release in the game is going to be in march) BUT I WAS WRONG. so he probably meant that it was going to come with the next mid-chapter, but that one's in april, so i'm also really confused right now lmao😭😭 sorry for spreading misinfo lol. or another one of my takes is that he was actually right and that the swamp was actually supposed to come with 'all things wicked' but the devs moved it AGAIN to the next update

    It's not a map but I remember seeing a bunch of unfinished tiles and assets for Wither Isle around the time Dredge's PTB was supposed to start, the only asset I remember though is a motel

    tbh i wish they started making more maps overall, when relms get just 1 map it kinda sucks and can get stale very fast, even just adding things like alternate light cycles to a map, or even weather would completely change how some maps feel
