The Cranberries - Zombie same theme...Ireland, the troubles!
U2 is an Irish band. The song is about the protests by Catholics that took place in Northern Ireland on Jan 30th 1972 against Britain ( more complicated) that turned violent and the English forces opening live round gun fire on the crowds. There is a movie about those events called "Bloody Sunday" that was released in 2002. It is a day long remembered in Ireland.
Its ironic since Larry Mullen's Jr, Edge are both Protestant and Bono is from an interfaith household but leans towards his mother's Church of Ireland faith as opposed to his Catholic Father's one ....

It's not the religion that matters to him, (Bono's about all that & he is a Christian after all), but the injustice and killings that were done by the English against Paul Hewson's own people.

it is about one of the saddest days in the troubles in Northern Ireland- it is called bloody Sunday when the army fired into a protesting crown. Been to Belfast and seen the wall and the names of the victims and their ages-when you see the ages of the people who died, some were children and this was the British army shooting onto their own citizens

The song was written about the violence in Ireland between the Catholics and Protestants (specifically an incident involving paratroopers gunning down civilians). But it’s at its core a protest song about the senselessness of violent bigotry. It was recently covered by a broadway performer and adapted to the recent BLM movement here in America, which makes sense. Love the band and love your honest reactions. Music may be the one thing that can bring all of us together.
Their concerts are beyond amazing! I’ve only been to three of U2’s concerts, and they were epic.
Love your pure reax, Queen. Harmony vocals by The Edge were always so key to U2 sounding amazing live. Gave time and space for Bono to run about and then come in always in perfect pitch. Oh, and he's playing the hell out of the guitar at the same time. Really remarkable as you typically only see that sort of perfect complementary vocals in siblings, think the Jacksons or the Osmonds. Try "Bad" from the Live Aid concert if you have not heard it.
@Jeff A. Taylor For perfect sibling vocal harmonies, check out The Everly Brothers, both of whom played guitar while singing. Their live performances of "All I Have to Do is Dream," "Love Hurts," "Bye Bye Love", and "Wake Up Little Susie" are phenomenal. They had a huge influence on Paul McCartney, and on Simon & Garfunkel, among many others.
Red Rocks is an amazing venue near Denver. It's been there more than 100 years (the venue-- the rocks have been there a bit longer).

I saw U2 on Dec 8 1987 at the Omni in Atlanta GA. It was the seventh anniversary of John Lennon's death and U2 sang some of his song in tribute, it was GREAT.

"New Years Day" and "40" were also songs about Ireland stride and unity from that same U2 period. New Years Day one of my favorites
Actually New Year's Day is about the Polish Solidarity movement and 40 is a take on Psalm 40 from the Bible.

This remains one of the best performances ever recorded. I wish I could’ve seen them on this tour, but I was a bit too young. I’ve seen them 8 times now. I remember the first time I heard War at a slumber party, then seeing all these videos from Live at Red Rocks on MTV solidified their place in my heart for the next 40+ years so far. 😂💚
I love U2 and I love that you’re expanding your musical interest. If you can, see them live. I’ve been to like 30 shows but there are fans that have been to over 200 shows. It’s an emotional ride. You’ll never be the same.

It's been quite some time since I could be considered a U2 fan --but I'm also first to say, 35 years after the fact, that "Bad" from Live Aid is always totally worth it

Spectacular performance by U2, and such a fantastic song that carries a deep message between militaristic tensions between British ruled Northern Ireland and independent Republic of Ireland, furthermore compounded by religious divisiveness between Catholics and Protestants, the former usually supporting Republic of Ireland and the latter more loyal to British rule. The specific tragedy that fuels this song is when many unarmed Irish protestors were shot dead (I am forgot the exact amount, so I did not want to just guess, but well over ten protestors dead - I can say that much) by the British occupying army, turning this event of an infamous act to be known as *Bloody Sunday.*

One of the best live versions of this song is from the Rattle and Hum movie. If you want to see raw emotion, do yourself a favor and watch that version. They performed it hours after learning if a bombing of a remembrance day parade in a town called Enniskillen on a Sunday. A true Sunday, Bloody, Sunday. Bono was so passionate and emotional in that, and the Edge’s guitar work was beautiful.

My favorite version is from their concert film "Rattle and Hum." This live performance was recorded just hours or days after the Remembrance Day bombing in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, which killed 11 or 12 people, most of them elderly civilians. The raw emotion of it was extraordinary.

My husband is an Irishman. His Grandfather was in the IRA and he is honored in Dublin for fighting in the Republic (Patrick Doyle). I’ve been educated about these wars from my mother in law. They came to America when my husband was a child.
My family was from Belfast and left Ireland. I grew up learning the opposite. Such a horrible time in Irish history. :(

The song is about The Troubles in Northern Ireland. To be exact it is about the Bloody Sunday massacre. The white flag that he had represents a blood soaked white flag used by Father Edward Daly as he led out people carrying 17 year old Jackie Duddy who had been shot in the back by police as he ran away. Bishop Daly became world famous because the events on Bloody Sunday were caught on camera. People everywhere saw Jackie Duddy bleeding to death and Father Daly give him the last rights.
This concert, "Live at Red Rocks", was a legendary performance!!
It used to take me less than ten minutes to get to that amphitheater before they closed one of the roads to get there, now it takes over half an hour.
Thus song was about the incident that sparked the violence that raged in northern Ireland in the 1970's and raged for about 20 years between the I.R.A. (Irish Republican Army) and the British government.
Well, the IRA, the British government and the Unionist paramilitaries.
2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment opened fire on a peaceful protest against internment without charges or trials. They killed 11 and wounded 17. On the 27th August 1979, elements of 2 Para were ambushed by the IRA at Warrenpoint, 18 troops killed and 22 wounded.

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" is a song by Irish rock band U2. It is the opening track from their 1983 album War and was released as the album's third single on 21 March 1983 in the Netherlands and West Germany. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is noted for its militaristic drumbeat, harsh guitar, and melodic harmonies. One of U2's most overtly political songs, its lyrics describe the horror felt by an observer of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, mainly focusing on the 1972 Bloody Sunday incident in Derry where British troops shot and killed unarmed civil rights protesters. Along with "New Year's Day," the song helped U2 reach a wider listening audience. It was generally well received by critics on the album's release.
The song has remained a staple of U2's live concerts. During its earliest performances, the song created controversy. Lead singer Bono reasserted the song's anti-sectarian-violence message to his audience for many years. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" grew from a guitar riff and lyric written by the Edge in 1982. While newlyweds Bono and Ali Hewson honeymooned in Jamaica, the Edge worked in Ireland on music for the band's upcoming album. Following an argument with his girlfriend, and a period of doubt in his own song-writing abilities, the Edge-"feeling depressed... channelled his fear and frustration and self-loathing into a piece of music." This early draft did not yet have a title or chorus melody, but did contain a structural outline and theme. After Bono had reworked the lyrics, the band recorded the song at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. During the sessions, producer Steve Lillywhite encouraged drummer Larry Mullen Jr. to use a click track, but Mullen was firmly against the idea. A chance meeting with Andy Newmark of Sly & the Family Stone - a drummer who used a click track religiously - changed Mullen's mind. The opening drum pattern soon developed into the song's hook. A local violinist, Steve Wickham, approached the Edge one morning at a bus stop and asked if U2 had any need for a violin on their next album. In the studio for only half a day, Wickham's electric violin became the final instrumental contribution to the song.
The direct impetus for the lyrics was an encounter with Provisional IRA supporters in New York City. As a promotional gimmick, U2 manager Paul McGuinness had made arrangements for the band to appear in the 1982 St. Patrick's Day parade. However, he later found that there was a possibility that Bobby Sands, an IRA hunger striker who had starved to death the previous year, would be the parade's honorary marshal. As they felt that the IRA's tactics were prolonging the fighting in Northern Ireland, McGuinness and the band members mutually decided they should withdraw from the parade. McGuinness met with one of the parade's organizers in a New York bar to arrange the cancellation, and ended up in a heated debate about the IRA. McGuinness recalled, "He kept telling me to keep my voice down. The place was full of New York policemen - Irish cops - and he thought I was going to get us killed."
Drummer Mullen said of the song in 1983:
We're into the politics of people, we're not into politics. Like you talk about Northern Ireland, 'Sunday Bloody Sunday,' people sort of think, 'Oh, that time when 13 Catholics were shot by British soldiers'; that's not what the song is about. That's an incident, the most famous incident in Northern Ireland and it's the strongest way of saying, 'How long? How long do we have to put up with this?' I don't care who's who - Catholics, Protestants, whatever. You know people are dying every single day through bitterness and hate, and we're saying why? What's the point? And you can move that into places like El Salvador and other similar situations - people dying. Let's forget the politics, let's stop shooting each other and sit around the table and talk about it... There are a lot of bands taking sides saying politics is crap, etc. Well, so what! The real battle is people dying, that's the real battle.
U2 were aware when they decided to record "Sunday Bloody Sunday" that its lyrics could be misinterpreted as sectarian, and possibly place them in danger. Some of the Edge's original lyrics explicitly spoke out against violent rebels, but were omitted to protect the group. Even without these lyrics, some listeners still considered it to be a rebel song-even one which glorifies the events of the two Bloody Sundays to which the lyrics refer.
Commercially, the single had its biggest impact in the Netherlands, where it reached number 3 on the national charts. In the US, the song gained significant album-oriented rock radio airplay, and together with the earlier "New Year's Day" helped expose U2 to a mainstream American rock audience.
Critical reception to the song was positive. In the Irish magazine Hot Press, Liam Mackey wrote that "Sunday Bloody Sunday" "takes the widescreen view...a powerful riff and machine-gun drumming is crisscrossed by skipping violin." Denise Sullivan commented for Allmusic that Mullen's opening drumwork "helps set the tone for the unforgiving, take-no-prisoners feel of the song, as well as for the rest of the album."
In 2010, Rolling Stone ranked "Sunday Bloody Sunday" 272nd on its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time." In 2006, Q named "Sunday Bloody Sunday" the 18th-greatest song of the 1980s. The staff of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame selected "Sunday Bloody Sunday" as one of 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. The New Statesman listed it as one of the Top 20 Political Songs, and similarly, Time named it one of the Top 10 Protest Songs.
On their first album he is listed as Bono Vox. Which means good voice in Latin. Now it’s just Bono.

Today is Bloody Sunday in Ireland 100 years.
Bloody Sunday took place in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1905. A group of working-class Russians went to the Tsar's winter palace to peacefully protest against harsh working conditions. They were shot down by soldiers before they could speak to the tsar; many were killed and wounded.
A completely different Bloody Sunday occurred in Northern Ireland in 1972. The mainly Catholic Civil Rights movement were holding a march in Londonderry. British soldiers responded by shooting thirteen unarmed protesters dead, including six minors; another died from the wounds a few months later. Five had been shot in the back. Army vehicles ran over two protesters. The British never punished those responsible and several songs (one by John Lennon, and other by U2) commemorate the tragedy. There is a Christian rock group that dedicates its name to the event, calling themselves “Bloody Sunday.”
It's worth noting that while the events in Londonderry may be the most famous of the many days which have gained the title "Bloody Sunday", it is a title used for several other days during the history of the Irish Conflict.

Bloody Sunday is January 30, 1972. On that date, there was a protest march in Derry, Northern Ireland, against the British policy of internment without trial (basically, being put in prison with no clear trial date or charge). British paratroopers fired on the march, injuring 15 people and killing 14 (13 on that day, with 1 more dying of injuries from that day a few months later).
It was very public, and is still considered the worst mass shooting in Northern Ireland. The British government tried to downplay the event, which led to a surge in PIRA volunteers and renewed conflict.
