"Sunday Bloody Sunday" is noted for its militaristic drumbeat, harsh guitar, and melodic harmonies. One of U2's most overtly political songs, its lyrics describe the horror felt by an observer of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, mainly focusing on the 1972 Bloody Sunday incident in Derry where British troops shot and killed unarmed civil rights protesters.

It was a big breakthrough for The Edge in his songwriting chops. He's spoken on how he struggled with the idea of "am I just going to just play on things my bandmates write, or am I a writer too?" But this was something he felt deeply about, and he wrote it with passion.

Bloody Sunday was on January 30, 1972. That day, the UK army fired on the participants of a demonstration in Derry, Northern Ireland killing 14 unarmed civilians and wounding more. This unleashed the nationalist revolt against the London government.
Bono was 11 yo, son of a Protestant mother and a Catholic father, so "this song is not a rebel song", it's more a reflection on the absurdity of the hatred that divides people who should be together. There's an amazing live version in the movie Rattle and Hum, where the band dedicates it to the 11 people killed during the IRA terrorist attack in 1987. Give it a try, it's really powerful!

@@leannmiller7153 Not meaning to sound rude. I'm just implying in most songs. The word Love is a metaphor for "The Lord" and One represents all Men. This song has many verses that speak of different incidents. Jesus was "Betrayed with a kiss." Of Judah. One.. Washed on an empty Beach represents numerous soldiers who didn't make it to shore alive. One.. "Caught on a Barbed wire fence" represents other soldiers or slaves who were just that. And yes, the most clear part of the song represents MLK's assassination. "One more.. What more?" Asking the lord why it keeps happening. COEXIST.

It was an Irish Catholic led protest that ended in bloodshed when British troops opened fire on the protesters. Here is a link to an article about the days events and the tragedy that took place:
    www.bbc.com/news/10138851
Here are the victims of that awful day:
    John 'Jackie' Duddy, age 17.
    Michael Kelly, age 17.
    Hugh Gilmour, age 17.
    William Nash, age 19.
    John Young, age 17.
    Michael McDaid, age 20.
    Kevin McElhinney, age 17.
    James 'Jim' Wray, age 22.
    William McKinney, age 26.
    Gerard 'Gerry' McKinney, age 35.
    Gerard 'Gerry' Donaghy, age 17
    Patrick Doherty, age 31.
    Bernard 'Barney' McGuigan, age 41.
    John Johnston, age 59.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. ... Like the seed buried in the ground, you have produced the harvest of eternal life for us; make us always dead to sin and alive to God.

1971 the British parachute regiment went from murdering 11 civilians in Ballymurphy, West Belfast which included a woman and a priest who went out to give the last rites to a dying man. This same regiment later went to Derry and murdered 14 civilians most of the dead were only 17 years old. This was also only 5 weeks after McGurks Bar was blown up in the Catholic New Lodge area of Belfast by the loyalist UVF killing 15 people. These 3 events contributed to the Provisional IRA getting considerably more support from the Irish Nationalist population.

Please listen to this highly emotional live performance of 'Sunday Bloody Sunday': ruclips.net/video/ahVUBlBjVv4/видео.html (Rattle and Hum version)
'Bloody Sunday' was a mass slaughter in N. Ireland - the Army opened fire on innocent civilians, many were killed; U2 wrote this song in remembrance of those who died. However, 20 years later, the Enniskillen bombing was equally horrific - innocent people, like lambs to the slaughter - just a few miles from were I live. The bomb caused total carnage.....U2 were onstage in America when it happened, so Bono basically told the audience the truth about war in his home country, how much pain the 'Revolution' (I.R.A.) was causing and called for it to stop. He received many death threats for speaking the truth that day....but it made me just love them even more for standing up for what was right - an end to war
    !
I've been lucky enough to have seen U2 twice in concert, and they DO NOT disappoint! I'm Irish and have seen them play Belfast and in their home town, Dublin☘️both concerts were unbelievably amazing, but seeing them play to THEIR DUBLIN was something I will NEVER forget. Bono is so interactive with the crowd and the band just kept on playing for hours. You should listen to 'With Or Without You', 'One' or 'All I Want Is You'.....simply beautiful.

Bloody Sunday was the real catalyst to the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Catholics were disadvantaged in Northern Ireland. Most didn't have a vote, and those that did, their vote was Gerrymandered. They were generally treated like dirt. Whilst its not the same and the scope may not have been as big, its exactly the same political mechanisms employed to keep Black Americans down. The NI Civil Rights movement was actually inspired by the American one. Up until Bloody Sunday, the vast, vast majority of Catholics thought they could achieve their aims through non-violent protest. The Civil Rights movement died on Bloody Sunday and paramilitary groups like the IRA (who previously had little support) were able to recruit off the back of what the British army did that day. They figured if even peaceful protests for Civil Rights could be so violently quashed by the state, what was the point in playing by their rules? After that the place descended into a violent tit-for-tat war zone between Catholic and Protestant paramilitary groups. And its important to note, none of this had anything to do with religion. It's about national identity. Catholics tend to be Nationalists who believe Ireland should be reunited and Protestants (who tend to be Unionists) who believe Northern Ireland should remain part of the UK. Its complicated and messy and though we've thankfully got some semblance of peace these days, its fragile and the societal divisions remain.

Here's a suggestion: React to Devil's Work by Joyner Lucas and react to Devil's Work Response by Bizzle. You NOT GONNA REGRET IT! Piece of art right there. Break the bars down, you gonna LOVE IT! For sure!

Bono's parents were Catholic and Protestant. ruclips.net/video/A_XfbHou88w/видео.html This video shows footage of the shootings, I don't know whether it's a recreation or historical but here it is: ruclips.net/video/Yv5U0A10hrI/видео.html The Cranberries did a song called Zombie which was about children dying because of a bombing in Northern Ireland.

Dude, if you like DRUMS and guitar solos, you have to check out "Stargazer" by Rainbow. Ritchie Blackmore is the greatest guitarist of all time, and the song opens with a kick-ass drum intro!!!!

Something about Americans - bc somehow it's always Americans - reacting to this song and Zombie by the Cranberries seemingly without ever even having *heard* of the Troubles bothers me. This stuff was *recent* , it only offically ended in like '98 and the effects could definitely still be felt much later, how come nobody over there seems to have heard of it when so many people over there claim Irish heritage? Like I don't even expect Americans to know shit about *my* country's history, even the parts their country was invoved in, but Ireland is part of the Anglosphere, surely knowledge of the Troubles should be much more widespread in the US than it apparently is?
