Tyra, great video! Every renter in the city of LA should know about REAP (Rent Escrow Account Program). I mention this because you talked about the roaches in your building, which means it's uninhabitable, especially if it's a persistent problem. Basically, if your landlord gets cited for a violation (like for roaches) and it's not fixed within a certain period of time, you pay reduced rent until it's fixed.
I wish I would've known about this 10yrs ago. Those apartments on Coliseum St near Baldwin Hills were INFESTED. I would spray and gas my unit every other day and they were never gone. I moved out as soon as my lease was done.

Read your lease before signing too, there are a lot og legitamate leasing companies engaged in predatory practices too. If you can rent directly from an owner that's the best arrangement. Consider renting a room in a house until you get established. Have a plan to get back home in case LA doesn't work for you.
Invitation homes is notoriously terrible. They bait and switch. Have clauses allowing them to raise the rent during the lease and you are on the hook for it. I can't stress enough to read every word before signing. And if there is a mistake and they say to sign it anyway because you know what they meant. Don't sign it until they give you a new corrected copy. Companies lie, cheat, and steal.
Planning on moving to LA once I finish college. So I’ve been working on planning because I don’t want to be unprepared and I want to be set up for success, instead of being completely lost when I get there. I live in Los Angeles. Don't move here. It's trashy. There are homeless people and tents everywhere. It is expensive. Lastly, it smells like poop and piss everywhere. LA sucks!
Born & raised here. When I was a kid in the 70s, the ONLY homeless I ever saw was Downtown/Skid Row. Before malls, my mom would take us to Downtown because that's where most of the stores were, so it was there when we'd see homeless. Fast forward to 2021 . . . now ALL of SoCal is full of homeless. It's really depressing what has happened to my town.
"All the gold in California is in a bank in the middle of Beverly hills in somebody else's name. So if you're dreaming of California, it don't matter where you've played before, California's a brand new game"
You do need a car here. But in the early 90s, I was a single mom who did just fine without a car for four years. However, I had laundry in my apartment complex and lived next door to the grocery store. In those days, the grocery carts didn’t lock up if you ventured so many yards away from the store. I wheeled the cart all the way to my front door. Every week or so, trucks would come around and collect the carts from all over the city. Back then, we didn’t have a Metro rail system. My daughter’s school was right in the neighborhood and had before-and-after-school care. I walked her to school and caught the bus right across the street from the school. I worked downtown and at least three or four bus lines took the freeway downtown. From there it was a short walk to my office. If I needed to shop I took the bus to the mall or wherever. A lot of stuff, especially Christmas gifts, I ordered from catalogs. There was also a drugstore and a five-and-dime in the same strip mall as the grocery store. There was also a record store, swap meet, a beauty supply, a park, a public pool, my daughter’s summer day camp, and restaurants either down the street or across the street.
This was really good information! I learned the hard way how important it is to read reviews about apartments regardless of where you live. I live in the DC area and moved into an apartment community to save money and thought the apartment was okay enough. But not long after I moved in, the roaches gave me a welcoming party....first grandfathers, then babies, toddlers, teenagers, aunts, uncles, etc. It was a nightmare! The Leasing Manager wouldn't let me out of my lease without charging me a hefty fee. But when I started posting pictures of the bugs on Yelp, they called me quickly to let me out of my lease with no charge. Happy ending but I paid a stressful price.
Excellent decision. Go for it if it makes you happy. The weather and variety of fast food places are the best in southern ca. I can recommend some good places to eat once you arrive here.
Also when you get out here, stay in the house or travel in packs, lock your car doors, drive through only…else you’re setting yourself up for quite the west coast experience.
Thinking about going to LA and staying for the whole summer next year.. I visited before and didn’t like it at first but gradually fell in love with the city. Really a great place and I’d recommend anyone to visit if they can, especially people in their late teens & 20’s.

Excellent decision. Go for it if that’s what makes you happy. Some crybabies from California choose to move to other states like Texas and the California migrants get blamed for driving up the cost of living.
As someone who wants to live in LA and only visited once I can honestly say Hollywood is not it! She is right it is dirty and a dump! And she is right do not move to any city broke. I was in California for 6 Weeks and I did need a car. The buses didn't connect well. Drivers didn't know enough about time or direction. Where I come from drivers know how to direct you to the moon and back. It is part of their job to know. And they don't want to look STUPID.
A car is definitely a must have🚗. LA traffic always varies, it also depends on who is driving. A lot of drivers aren't from LA and may or may not know the area as well yet. Definitely keep that in mind. Did you enjoy your time in California though?
I also want to add that pickpocketing doesn’t happen as much as other major cities. LA is relatively safe during the day and evening. But it’s a general rule of thumb to be inside or with a group of people once the street lights come on.

VERY accurate. I grew up Orange County and now live in Los Angeles. LA is like NOTHING I've ever lived in. (and I've lived A LOT of places) Take care, keep your eyes open, DON'T GO OUT AT NIGHT UNLESS ABSOULTELY NECESSARY. :)
I'm from the midwest. I'm thinking about moving here if only for 2 months. I've always said LA is fun to visit but not fun to live in, I've been to the city several times. Homelessness is everywhere. Then you have the very rich areas where the homes are worth millions. There seems to be a disconnect between the elite and the other people.
I think the opposite, it’s boring to visit but great to live. We have little history and no central area, so it’s nearly impossible to really get the “highlights” done on a trip. So you only have amusement parks or cheesy tourist traps like Hollywood walk of fame. If you live here, we have the beach and not too far there are great mountains and hikes, and so many neighborhoods with their own character. There is so much good food, for all diets and special needs! You can find any kind of physical fitness activity to suit you. You can bike lots of places. We have great places to shop. We have great professional and university sports. Good museums. There is so much to do, we are ok paying $2000 for 1 bedroom because we spend so much time outside

I don't know what the deal is in LA city but they let a lot of it look like crap and let so much stuff that lowers the quality of life for residents go unchecked. The LA many people imagine are really the separate cities within LA county that are more expensive and the coastal suburbs and not really where most single 20-30 somethings move to. The cool neighborhoods many single people flock to are between Sunset Blvd and Pasadena but that's far from the beach and a lot of that area is run down looking as well and imo overhyped, it's mostly houses with some pockets of cool places on busy, noisy, dirty streets. Abbot Kinney Blvd and Main Street in Venice is really the coolest looking area in LA city (combo of many independent, hipster shops, nice variety of 1 story architecture, street isn't noisy and dirty unlike Sunset Blvd, and it's a few blocks from the beach) but it is too expensive for most single people to live in now and so far from the Silver Lake+Los Feliz+Echo Park and eastward region that I mentioned above where so many flock to now. If it weren't for the entertainment industry, I think LA wouldn't be worth it right now. Even if you have money, there are nicer places to live in California and that region but the issue is the weaker job market and a lot fewer single people, especially trendier / hipster types, move to them since they all got to live in the same few coolest places in the US for their social status.
I think its an endless cycle, we are so densely populated AND a huge tourist attraction that its hard to keep it all together? Also, I love pasadena! I almost moved there! I think it was the perfect blend of living close to the city but still having a "slower" pace life!
I did visit LA many years ago and I found the same issues with Hollywood Blvd. I thought it would be so glamorous and I had homeless people constantly coming up to me asking if I wanted to buy a map to the stars home. It was really dingy. I also found the same issues in Atlanta with a rising homeless population.😣😞

@10:11: There are no “burroughs” here. No one says that. We have “neighborhoods”, “areas”, and “districts”. In the past 20-25 years the City started giving each neighborhood a name that never had a name before. Little Ethiopia, Little Armenia, Faircrest Heights, LaCienega Heights, Vermont Knolls . . . all are recently named and designated neighborhoods. We have a “downtown”, but unlike New York, there’s no “uptown” or “midtown”. We have a “west side” and “east side”, but where those are depends on who you’re talking to. Traditionally, everything west of Main St. is the west side. There’s now a “Downtown Culver City”, but when I was growing up no one called it that. Culver City was dead as a doornail. It was almost entirely populated by WASPS, unlike the Jewish neighborhoods right next door. The post office, police station, and fire station are all downtown. But now, so are a lot of trendy restaurants and a big movie complex. MGM Studios is still there, as is what was once Desilu Studios, only, due to overdevelopment, you can’t even see it anymore.
Almost all the places near the beach are nice except El Segundo and Venice Beach. If you want to stay away from danger best to avoid Gardena, Huntington Park, Wilmington, City of Industry, and Harbor City. Decent cities that aren't TOO expensive are Torrance, Redondo Beach, Covina, Westminster, and Brea. A lot of other places are deep in the hood like Long Beach or very expensive such as Burbank.

Read your lease before signing too, there are a lot og legitamate leasing companies engaged in predatory practices too. If you can rent directly from an owner that's the best arrangement.
Consider renting a room in a house until you get established. Have a plan to get back home in case LA doesn't work for you.
Luckily, I have a manager so no need of signing leases like that in LA for me!! I got one even when still in michigan!!
Yes, I got screwed over by a criminal company in LA called "G&K Management". Never rent from them.

Really?
🤣🤣 not entire generations of roaches! Im sorry sis. Hope things are better
@@MamaHarperr LOL Things are so much better now! I moved into a nicer apartment and community.😊

Hopefully its good enough to buy a home someday

A car is definitely a must have🚗. LA traffic always varies, it also depends on who is driving. A lot of drivers aren't from LA and may or may not know the area as well yet. Definitely keep that in mind. Did you enjoy your time in California though?
LA native here! LA is fun when you have a car, friends, and know all the good spots to hang out. No one goes to Hollywood, rarely Santa Monica.
I also want to add that pickpocketing doesn’t happen as much as other major cities. LA is relatively safe during the day and evening. But it’s a general rule of thumb to be inside or with a group of people once the street lights come on.

There is no disconnect there is successful people and there is homeless crack heads make no mistake my friend

LA is a lot more expensive now and people are rude in traffic.

The only time an L.A. native will say “highway” is in very general terms, not when talking about one freeway specifically, but about going for a long drive out of state or booking it out of town. Before moving to California in general, I heard that it’s very expensive like New York expensive that’s including the gas and other things
I am disabled and a power wheelchair user. My disability prevents me from driving.I want to move to California for graduate school and to start my career as a therapist. The cold in the mid west is so hard on my body and increases my chronic pain exponentially. Disneyland is also a massive plus as I’ve collected Disney for my entire life.
“Let’s get straight into it” proceeds to not get straight into it
Great and entertaining video. I escaped LA after 25 years..... I always tell people who are thinking of moving there: You should NOT be picturing the show Beverly Hills 90210. You NEED to be picturing the movie Boys N the Hood or the movie Friday. That is more life will be like for you. LOL.
Also, please be careful folks - women (and men) who move to LA for "acting" quite often end up doing PORN. These are true FACTS.
@@lisaj4441 why though ? That’s awful (in my opinion)
Oh wow !! I didn’t know actors were out here doing porn!!
@@lisaj4441 yup also bcuz many of them are delusional and fame chasin no matter at what cost or comprising to their dignity. Actors and aspiring actors in general are mostly narcissistic that’s why they choose that job in the first place
@@Anne_Myriam_ because people that wanna act often dont have any real skills in life. Imagine 5 million people competing for like 30-40 jobs as actors that will actually pay the bills. Acting is insanely competitive. Most actors actually work at restaurants/bars. Pathetic industry to aspire for. Its all so superficial
Thanks for this video! I’m in the process of looking for a place in LA. This was helpful!
oh yay! How is it going for you? I know I late to respond!
Nice analysis of the topic..
Glad you liked it
You're so captivating. Subscribed.
Why thank youuuu 😊
Hi Tara Happy New Year!
I am new to your page, im looking to move to california from NY within the next 3 months and this video was helpful. just curious to know if the apartment complex you referred to in your video was the Chadwick? (not sure if you are at liberty to say) if not completely understandable. on another note if possible, can you do a video of LA best neighborhoods to live in for black professional women regarding safety, convenience etc in your opinion? There are so many options I confused here. Thanks!
Lol Charisma girl!!! That’s crazyyyy! No, it’s not the apartment I’m referring to. I lived in a little apartment building. It’s not even really addressed by a name! But, I was interested in moving into the Chadwick, but the reviews on Google 🥴🥴 lol
Also, I think this would be a great video idea! Thank you for the inspo!
Thank you so much! ALL of your videos are so insightful!
thank you for watching! 🥹🫶🏾
I know that you won’t be able to read this comment but I’m moving to LA and I’m a foreigner who has never lived alone. Maybe I could you some questions ?🥺
you're so well versed... good luck for the channel!!
Thank you so muchhhh 🥰
I lived in LA a long time ago, in 2005 and I remember the helicopters. I also remember that McArhur park was not as bad as it is now, but it was freaky to walk close by. Thank you so much for this video, I always wanted to go back but after listening to this video probably not. I might go to OC
You deserve a hug 🤗
moving to LA in 4 weeks… i’m so nervous i’m considering backing out but i want to move so badddddd so i might as well 😭
girl you got this!
@@SamaShake omg thank you , i have an apartment and everything already i’m just , so nervous!
Girl go! I wish I was going in week . I just came back and cried like a baby cause I didn’t wanna go home
Exactly. I was so scared because of all the things people where saying (most weren’t from la anyway lmao)
@@Jacson_23 your own experience is what’s important.
keep staring at your hair its beautiful
What was your experience doing Airbnb when you first moved? I’m thinking about doing that myself
Just don’t host any parties if you rent an Airbnb. Some partygoers just like to trash the Airbnb homes.
It’s not noisy everywhere. I live in the Valley and it’s exceedingly quiet.
well, it depends where you are! I live in the valley now too, and its still pretty noisy with the helicopters and planes! 😩
Thank you for this video!!!😁
I know this may sound crazy but I was in California last summer for 2 months I actually drove there it was amazing I lost count of how much money I spent I stopped counting at 5,000 I don't even know what happened. I'm trying to come back this summer but I don't have any friends out there I don't know anymore
You don’t have to have friends to come back! If your heart leads you there, GO! And I wish you the best! 🥳
@@TyraTheCreative thank you so much..I got two friends in California now but it was after I left online.. frickin weird but cool. I drove all over the city...50 bucks a day was mungas budget.
Thank you for this video I’m so glad someone brought it to the real
This is so helpful! Thank you! I just found out I’m moving there in a month for school.
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with your move and school! So exciting!
you're so pretty, your hair !

🥹 🧡
Tyyy for all of your helpful info darling!
You are so welcome! Glad it's helpful!
I love the background sis
Thank you! I loved it too! I’ve moved since filming this. 🥲
Wow watching this has reminded me not to go back to Los Angeles. Well California in general because north cal has the same vibes with homeless people, etc
You must live near Inglewood
Thank you maybe moving there from Seattle if this interview goes well
So i'm born and raised from Los Angeles and have visited Seattle twice now. I'm enamored by the Emerald City. Ive actually visited most major cities in the US and come to realize that most major cities have everything every other city has as companies and technologies grow. They all are also very expensive places. Seattle costs as much as LA does becuase of the major companies out there. For example, Microsoft and Amazon. What i'm getting at is that, it boils down to the people and the weather that actually make cities different from others-subjectively. Seattle has surrounding nature that is incontrovertibly beautiful and smart people. In summary; why are you leaving? And would you like to switch spots with me? Please tell me why you're leaving Seattle and I will send you my next novel on why I'm leaving Los Angeles.
@@giarichards1529 probably the weather plus LA just has way more going on
That background is fucking dope
so glad you like it!! 🥰
