I've noticed that people who never had to struggle don't handle financial, job and or health declines well. The coping skills haven't been developed. Poorer people seem always in survival mode and plan multiple ways to combat hardships . The upper middle-class and higher keep looking for their cheese refusing to believe it is gone. If their self worth is tied to their social standing or "image" they refuse to save themselves early on by ditching The "status symbols, expensive homes, materials and debt." Humility and common sense seems harder to attain the wealthier one becomes.

This same situation happened to my own family when me and my brother were in our teens. We had to get out there and find whatever job was available and contribute to the family. We never blamed our dad for losing his job. We were proud of him and we felt it was our time to help out instead of just always depending on him. Save on electricity by not putting up xmas lights. Have the kids refill their water bottles at the drinking fountain and take reusable bags for lunch. Rent a house without a finished basement, that's cheaper. There's a lot of money being spent that's totally unnecessary! And the kids keeping up appearances? F-that! Truth Hurts: I totally agree. I grew up poor and started working part time at age 14. My mom has pancreatic cancer and she worked full time as a secretary until she could retire, despite going for chemo every other week. My dad was a lot like Bob in that after he was laid off he never let his pride interfere with him doing jobs others might find beneath them in order to support our family (night custodian, pumping gas, golf caddy, handyman, etc). I’m super grateful for the family I was blessed to have, despite our financial difficulties. I really hope his kids feel the same way.

I was unemployed for 2 years (thankfully I had savings) and I wasn't able to get a job based on my experience so I had no choice but to work for minimum wage at Target. I continued applying for better jobs until I got one which paid a lot more than Target. I still live as if I was making minimum wage and I save/invest 50% of my income. I'm still working but if I had got laid off due to the Coronavirus epidemic I would have been fine.

The United States Congress and State governments need to enforce the age discrimination laws they choose
to ignore. It is against the law to discriminate against older people but it happens frequently. Most older people who get laid off, whether in personal or in-mass layoffs, have difficulty getting another job because, if they are over 40, they're considered old by today's employers' and corporations' standards. Loss of homes, unemployment benefits that run out, and homelessness follows. Even worse, older people are forced to take early Social Security at age 62 instead of waiting until 66. When they have no choice but to take early monthly SS checks, they lose at least 25% of SS income for as long as they live. Women, living on SS, are probably the highest numbers living in poverty in the USA. For many decades, businesses have been disloyal when they discriminated against competent, loyal employees in favor of employing younger, less costly and skilled workers. This scenario continues against older workers today. I pray our government will help the elderly who became poor due to being shut out of decent employment opportunities and suffer this terrible loss of SS benefits they were entitled to previously.

So the wife loves him when he can provide and when he can’t, then turns her back on him. This guy loves his children and I hope the children realize how lucky they are to have a father like him , who would do anything to support his children. BTW why doesn’t the wife work , and his teenage kids should work too.

I finally got a new (to me car) after driving my other one for 20+ years. I got it cheap on a neighborhood listserv, when the daughter of the seller (a college student) needed a better car. I will take that car gladly, due to low mileage and cheap maintenance and big enough space to be able to live out of the car (if ever necessary). Yes, I always assume paychecks will stop and so I buy my cars with the thought in mind, can I sleep in it with my dog and have space to my essentials. Growing up as poor as I did, I never assume there is money to buy groceries.

I have never worked a day in my life and I am in a wheelchair with cerebral palsy . The doctor said I wouldn't be able to live past my first year but I survived by the grace of God . My dad worked for 27 so he can have a house just like that who died before he was able to really enjoy the house that worked his whole life to get. All you have is sit there and make do with what you have, there is nothing wrong with driving around in an old car. The lesson here is be the ant and not the grasshopper! In my book that is a beautiful home so why is everybody being such a snob. Some people just don't know how easy they really have it. At the end of the day all cars and houses are just sheet metal brick and mortar. Would you really need to worry about is how you going to take care of your family in the end of the day! It doesn't matter what it looks like as long as you get you from point A to point B and, you have a safe place to lay your head at the end of the day! We need to get our attraction the glitz and glamour out of our head! All that really matters are the essentials. If you want anything else you got to work for it. The moral of the story is always work to improve but, be grateful for what you have because you can always lose it. how Hard times breed more champions than privilege. 😎

I volunteer once a month at a foodbank that has served as many as 150 families a week. Anyone who makes fun of those who are struggling are horrible people - they just need to wait - their time will come. Because pain and sorrow hits us all at one time or another.

I slept on the couch of a one bedroom trailer until 7th grade. Then a twin bed in the hallway of a bigger trailer. Never had a room of my own. At 12 years old started babysitting to buy shoes for school. I was blessed I didn't know how poor we were. If I ever said "I hate this car" I would be beaten with a belt. Worked my way through college. Gratitude moves us forwar.
These kids had it too good for too long. Remaining in their school with more fortunate friends can't be healthy.
Bob and his family have not let go of their old life. I have experienced downsizing and accepting a whole new location, career and lifestyle is beneficial.
WE don't know the whole story. I wonder if the wifes family see opportunities for Bob in South Carolina.
I pray for Bob and his family. May the church provide counseling and solace for them all.

I will say it over and over, people don't have empathy until it happens to them.

I never resented my husband when he lost his job. It was out of his control. I got a part time job and we managed, he later got a job and it worked out. Bob's family is horrible. They were spoiled and now they're thankless. He deserves better. His family is selfish 😒

It's one thing the kids, but his wife to be so resentful and basically make him sleep in the basement (it was also clear he was hinting they were not intimate) is disgusting. This dude stuck with you while you were sick, and this is how you react? This is the problem of patriarchy alot of people don't want to address, how most women view men only as a side wallet.

Easy to blame. Look with bigger vision JOBs. Jobs. Benefits and pension for retirement?? Where is it. No leaders talk about it. They only talk about Abortion/LGBT/Racism. Real problems are ignored due to Filthy wealthy corporation investors influencing leaders mind.

@@christinecatt8039both parties haven’t done anything to improve the situation. It’s election year and they won’t even get together to debate, much less address the employment and housing situation. All they care about is making sure you believe you only have two options and guess what, based on your comment they have successfully engrained their agenda into your head.
