For the kids in the first story, you have a mother and a father. You have a roof over your head and food in the fridge. You are driven to school, not in a car as fancy as others but it works. You were not abandoned or abused. You have a father that cares and fixes your lunch every day. What else do you want!???! I wish I had half of that when I was your age!

Those children could do some type of work as well as going to school. They probably could budget their food expense. Only one doing everything was Bob and he was the only one that looked normal weight. You can save a lot of money if you plan your meals correctly and you don’t add in lots of ready to eat food. He shouldn’t be so hard on himself, just turn his kids into survival mode. ps. My Dad grew most of our food, all organic in those days. We had to paint the chicken house.😂. And as this was aired back in 2012, he was out of a job for 4 years! I know it was tough on him to loose his job and the strain it caused for himself and his family. Also, I don't know why his in-laws are treating him badly. I can guess though! Was there a follow up on this video, about Bob? Where is he now? I'd like to know, and hope he and his family are doing well.

How is it possible that we are measuring a person's worth by how much their paycheck is? Bob seems like one of the best dads out there. Getting laid off can happen to anyone. This same situation happened to my own family when me and my brother were in our teens. We had to get out there and find whatever job was available and contribute to the family. We never blamed our dad for losing his job. We were proud of him and we felt it was our time to help out instead of just always depending on him. That's what a families are supposed to do, help each other in times of hardship. You only have one Dad in your life.

We are not rich, but my siblings and I do chip in for board and groceries. Once you hit a certain age that’s when you need to find a job and contribute even if you’re still staying with your parents.

It is not! And agreed, should not! This is the problem with us Americans our version of poverty is still so rich. I saw her cooking with butter. They are well fed. Their “modest house” is a gorgeous home. If no one has a job why not live somewhere that is more affordable? Somewhere where there will be work, and the cost of living is low. Plenty of places in america. There are even towns giving away plots of land to get people to live there! We have done so many disservice with our corporate view of food and home. The wife said, “when does the good stuff come?” The good stuff happened... the good stuff was an idol... and maybe this is their time to realize what is the real good stuff! Love. Family... so sad to see so many squander so many good gifts.

Save on electricity by not putting up xmas lights. Have the kids refill their water bottles at the drinking fountain and take reusable bags for lunch. Rent a house without a finished basement, that's cheaper. There's a lot of money being spent that's totally unnecessary! And the kids keeping up appearances? F-that! They can catch a bus to a local public school to save on gas and get over it. I know that's harsh...but families should work together and support one another. Why is this all on Bob???

My mom has pancreatic cancer and she worked full time as a secretary until she could retire, despite going for chemo every other week. My dad was a lot like Bob in that after he was laid off he never let his pride interfere with him doing jobs others might find beneath them in order to support our family (night custodian, pumping gas, golf caddy, handyman, etc). I've noticed that people who never had to struggle don't handle financial, job and or health declines well. The coping skills haven't been developed. Poorer people seem always in survival mode and plan multiple ways to combat hardships . The upper middle-class and higher keep looking for their cheese refusing to believe it is gone. If their self worth is tied to their social standing or "image" they refuse to save themselves early on by ditching The "status symbols, expensive homes, materials and debt." Humility and common sense seems harder to attain the wealthier one becomes.

I agree but what annoys me is his family's attitude. He stated that this has put a strain on his marriage, his in-laws don't speak to him and his kids are ashamed of the car he drives. Don't they all see that he's doing the best he can under the circumstances? When he was making a telephone number salary, he was the perfect father and provider but once he lost that high-paying job, he is huge failure. Trashy ungrateful family.

The United States Congress and State governments need to enforce the age discrimination laws they choose
to ignore. It is against the law to discriminate against older people but it happens frequently. Most older people who get laid off, whether in personal or in-mass layoffs, have difficulty getting another job because, if they are over 40, they're considered old by today's employers' and corporations' standards. Loss of homes, unemployment benefits that run out, and homelessness follows. Even worse, older people are forced to take early Social Security at age 62 instead of waiting until 66. When they have no choice but to take early monthly SS checks, they lose at least 25% of SS income for as long as they live. Women, living on SS, are probably the highest numbers living in poverty in the USA. For many decades, businesses have been disloyal when they discriminated against competent, loyal employees in favor of employing younger, less costly and skilled workers. This scenario continues against older workers today. I pray our government will help the elderly who became poor due to being shut out of decent employment opportunities and suffer this terrible loss of SS benefits they were entitled to previously.

I was unemployed for 2 years (thankfully I had savings) and I wasn't able to get a job based on my experience so I had no choice but to work for minimum wage at Target. I continued applying for better jobs until I got one which paid a lot more than Target. I still live as if I was making minimum wage and I save/invest 50% of my income. I also was on a team that started a free health clinic, volunteered at the food pantry, and prayed... a lot. At the end of that year in my mid fifty’s I took a minimum wage no benefits job working at a plastics plant in the automotive industry. After 20+ years in healthcare this was my new career path. I’ve now been working full time with benefits for the past 7 years. Life has changed, my wife has been with me every step of the way. I finally got a new (to me car) after driving my other one for 20+ years. I got it cheap on a neighborhood listserv, when the daughter of the seller (a college student) needed a better car. I will take that car gladly, due to low mileage and cheap maintenance and big enough space to be able to live out of the car (if ever necessary). Yes, I always assume paychecks will stop and so I buy my cars with the thought in mind, can I sleep in it with my dog and have space to my essentials. Growing up as poor as I did, I never assume there is money to buy groceries.

I feel for him but the key is to always live below your means. They did not have to live in the first neighborhood. The job incentivised it but it wasnt mandatory. He created spoiled kids and a spoiled wife by thinking that his whole self worth as a man was to have money and throw it at his family. Had he lived modestly despite his paycheck and saved the excess that he was wasting hed be in a better situation.
But you can see the pain in his eyes and it is absolutely heartbreaking. I hope it gets better for him.

When he moved from NJ he didn’t think he would end up in the position, they were living a dream that turned nightmare. He immediately tried to find a good job, but the job market is terrible. His wife and her parents blame him for something that’s out of his control?? FOH

This right here. I don't think people realize that what we're about to enter will be worse than the Great Depression. My husband and I have been saving money like crazy. We're good at saving anyway, but we've ramped it up! We're living off of $200 per week! No splurges and we're making food and freezing it.

Andrey Che O.K. but this isn’t a decade old, it says that it’s from 2012. Not that 8 years vs. 10 years is much of a difference but if you want to persuade people to change their minds and be better you have to be 100% accurate or else they’ll think the real things you’re saying are also not true.

I can relate to these people I lost everything back in 1984 due to very low oil prices and when you live in a state where you have a oil based economy it can be devastating. I had to move 600 mi away and live in a travel trailer with my wife and two children. We had a comfortable home in South Louisiana and moved to Tennessee and worked the automotive boom. It was so depressing but it taught me to prepare and to save and not to waste money. I feel so sorry for these people.

because no matter how liberal america looks on the outside, they are still conservative on the inside and one of the ways this shows up is in gender roles: women expect their husbands to always be strong and never fail. the women feel ashamed and resentful if their husbands can't "be a man".
