- Have you ever done a DIY van conversion? Why not make a business of it? It’s an industry with high customer demand and revenue potential, something Axis Vehicles found out when they opened for business last year.
Gretchen Bayless and Taylor Hood started doing van conversion to build out the fleet for their rental company, Roamerica. They saw a market need for high-quality camper van build services and started Axis Vehicles in 2020 to meet it.
Even though they’re a young company, they’re already seeing impressive growth and are on pace to complete 25-30 camper van builds in 2021-a 300% increase over the 8 they did in 2020.
In this interview, we’ll get Gretchen and Taylor’s advice for starting a camper van conversion business, complete with a van tour so you can see just what they do.
A major factor in their fast growth has been their ability to build a loyal customer following. We’ll find out how they get their name out to the public and what strategies have been most successful for them so far when it comes to attracting and keeping customers.
Successful camper van conversion means having the right tools for the job. We’ll learn what equipment is a must-have for a camper van conversion business and what kind of space you need to have to use it.
Growing a van build business also means hiring and training a solid team, so we’ll get some insights into how they find and hire employees to keep quality high while expanding revenue potential.

Seems there are no conversion companies of the east coast, yet the interest in my conversion is overwhelming.
Which the current shortage of rv / class c and class b vehicles the demand is increasing. Now add the international travel restrictions there seems to be a perfect storm type scenario for this business. What happens though in 2 years? Is this more of a fad trend or a natural progression in the travel industry 🤔
I just finished a conversion in a Ram Promaster and I have been overwhelmed with people wanting to look at it. My plan now is to sell it and do another one and create my own business.
I started my van business in October of 2021. Had a second van lined up before I even finished the first. Im thinking I jumped in at the right time. However I did have questions on what type of licensing they got to build their company and stay within compliance.
@@davidwardlow721 hi,
Are looking for customers?
This channel is just the biggest blessing cant thank you guys enough
😀😀😀It's our pleasure Etuune. We're so happy that you find the information useful. What industry should we feature next?
These videos deserve way more views. Thanks for the info!
Really appreciate the support!
Very informative video, I'm glad she was so open about all aspects of the business.
Yes! That's the best part. We strive to break down all the nitty gritty details for our viewers.😊 What was your favorite part?
Always here watching your vids guys. This one's a bit short in my opinion, but I've been able to learn many things from it.
1)Partnerships are super important. The more, the better.
2)provide your customers with discounts and additional services
3)it's never late to get started
4)keep your foot on the gas
5)there's lots of expenses in this specific market
6)marketing strategy isn't an important thing if you want your business to be local.
Hey there Dario! Thanks for always giving great feedback. What business do you think we'll have on next?
'start now' - great advice and also 'just do it' sounds familiar though !! great vans !!
I wish I could like it 4000 times for an update !!
Rent is too high , they should expand now . And more people are willing to live like this and not own a home . Less expensive
Very true! You can easily live in these!
@@UpFlip no zip code home 🏠. Plus a lot less maintenance and more likely less to sell if you own . As long it’s 4x4 Or awd.
Yuuup and move whenever and wherever you want!
Not if there's no toilet or shower, which they didn't mention. I'd much rather a typical class b to full-time.
Damn new rich linving in those things
This is second best channel on youtube!!!
Such a great video!
Thank you Emilio
Great job explaining /covering the business aspects. One question. If profit was about 20k per van sales price on Average was? 80k cost 100k price? Up to 200k sales price? Would it be sustainable with a 20% margin?
Oh 1 more question what do you believe the roi average time is on rentals? 2yrs?
Try reaching out to the company David to get some of the more specific van conversion business questions you have answered. Thanks for watching and commenting! We appreciate your support of the channel.
Funny I found this. Just starting a van build company is Canada
Ask them how is the manufacturer warranty followed when altering the vehicles at a third party facility (4x4 conversion). Thanks!
Will put that on the list of future van conversion questions we ask!
Why did they choose that model van in particular?
Great video!
Thanks for the support!
did she say about what her profit would be on a van with an expense of about 80-100k? really considering getting a promaster, converting it just for me, but maybe also putting it up for sale after a trip or two, disregard, @ 11:55 she says profit is about $20k for her builds
Glad you found the answer! Thanks for watching!
Awesome video
Thank you Adrian!
Love it.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing!!
Very impressive indeed Bree! What was your favorite part of the video?
Epic!
Any owner that says "this business is not for everybody" says this bc they don't want more competition
So they earn about $74 per hour before paying employees. This is based on her saying they make about $20k per build. Those margins seem awfully low. I wonder if shifting to focusing on renting for 2-3 years, and then selling (exiting) each vehicle would be a more efficient business model?
I wouldn’t want to buy it after it’s got 300,000 miles on it.
I'm guessing this is after paying the employees and everything else, would be interested to know how much is made from rentals on top of this.
For example if you guys supply the van and conversion just example no propane sofa bed in rear. Price and down payment. Oh yes do you fiance them.
I love it
Thank you Mohamed!
It's just a westfalia which is a sportsmobile layout
Question, why we will pay 120k for a van... when you can get a bigger Rv and much more for that price... its great idea but it seem to me the price is to high for what its is. Perhabs becouse its metal and custom buil?
Vans are a little less conspicuous and therefore can be parked in more places than a camper, for longer periods of time. Also, vans are typically smaller and easier to navigate through cities and towns vs a camper/rv/motorhome. Thats the appeal of "Van Life"
Toilet, shower, batteries?
I’m in the process of researching to purchase a RV to rent. After watching this video I may consider building to sell. I have no experience in either. Any words of wisdom?
just do it
@@lt6731 I was looking more for product information and the process of building vans. Doing it and the cost is no problem it’s the knowledge that I lack.
How much it cost to furnish my van the same brand Ford ?
You should contact them on their website: www.axisvehicles.com/
Average cost for interior is around $50k. That includes everything from insulation to ceiling fans, 2 beds, kitchen, etc. 👍
How to get started without funding
I guess they didn't see your comment 😏
@@qwiktips6804 the only comment they missed lol
@@Marc-tv3hn Thats because they dont know how.
you can't do anything without funding
We are doing this in Bangalore India
Sounds awesome Earth Camper. We will have to check you out.
Where is this based? Great video!
This van conversion business is located in Washington.
Nice video! We live on a sailboat but do a LOT of DIY work... we just did a DIY LIthium Battery set up and would love to hear what you think! its in our latest vid.
Lets go 🌠🎆🎇
🙏
Looking to gay a van, what’s the name of their rental company?
www.roamerica.com/
Ceiling is way to low need al least another foot for head clearance.
Thanks for the insight S Lange.
You gotta be crazy to spend $100000 on that what the heck
Right? You could get a decent camper with a shower, kitchen, and living space for that.
Soo , my question is. If you buy a van for $50k, convert it for $30k and sell it for $120k do you pay tax’s on the whole $120k of income that you get from flipping the van?
Seriously peolople are paying 50k for a job? don't you think that profit is ridiculous?
@@Voltomess How much is Pfizer making in profit right now again ?
no you only pay tax on the profit (40k)
and i highly doubt that to convert is 30k
We have vans for days 🚐
Are you in the same type of business Livebythemile?
@@UpFlip we sure are! Love your channel! Keep up the great work
I’d line to do this
Go for it!
Would you say camper world is their biggest competitor?
That may be the case!
Thank you for the Video. I have Van 2019 Ford transit 250 cargo van. I want to sell my van for $30,000. The mileage 136k.
I wonder if people would be interested in buying a build with used materials. It would be more affordable and in my opinion, have more character and look better. These builds look very plain. Also with the price, I feel like you may as well buy a camper that has way more space and amenities.
800k gross or net?
This is gross Jordan. Thanks for watching. Would you ever consider starting a business such as this?
@@UpFlip Im considering buying a M1083, or similar, to build a tiny house, travel and be a ski bum in for several years. Im wondering if, after traveling, i could get the money i put into it back plus some. I know i probably wont even hit minimum wage for the hours spent learning and building but, i would like to sell the vehicle for a down payment on some land
👍
Do they offer financing?
Never hurts to reach out and ask.
Hard to watch this whole episode,,
Her *helium* voice and neck brace movement drives me nuts
a.k.a (wheres waldo )
Do be sure to check out our videos for a potentially more enjoyable viewing experience.
Helium voice hahah
You’re asking more questions as if you’re a customer looking for a holiday van.
Ignore me. I’m just in an irritable mood. Been watching your vidoes for 10 hours. I’m just exhausted. Awesome vidoes bro
Appreciate the support! What would you like to see more of?
They would do better reducing price to make it more affordable by getting cheaper items
I think they are overcharging for labor
I thought most folk who do van life are not rich
Who is spending 100 k
Probably have to hire more employees because lower price would increase volume
100k I would get better looking van
Those vans look used
300 a night too high
Not really think about it if you were renting a car at enterprise then renting a hotel it’ll probably be around $300 a day on average
$300 a night🤔🤭
Price points for businesses are always a work in progress.
why is she not turning her head? 🤔
Welcome to the channel himanshu! 😀We hadn't noticed. What do you mean?
All your video releases about business do not work in Russia. Find a business idea for Russia.
We're glad you're tuned in from Russia Euromaxtv. 😀What type of business ideas would you like to see?
@@UpFlip suggest me what kind of business will go to Russia)). 80% of successful business ideas in America will not work in Russia. There is a different mentality here. Paradoxes. The clans of the family of officials, but the detachment of the poor (every man for himself), corruption and bribery, the melancholy of people and the passionate desire to survive. Hopelessness and apathy. In Russia, either very rich or very poor people. I had 5 stores, but people didn't buy because they were on low-salary loans. Maybe then something should be done for the rich? they are despondent, they are bored with idleness, because the wives of deputies buy handbags for $ 200,000, and deputies watch for $ 1 million. Let's invent a business for the rich. A person does not buy anything until he sees it. We need to make a consumer demand.
so fake. This cant be a business model for sure. You guys are literally trying to say we work for Jesus 😄All the figures and hours are not true.
