  • We followed up with Isaiah a year later, find out how he's business is doing now on our podcast: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...
Starting a business with $500-sounds far-fetched, right? That’s how much Isaiah Barhoum had when he started Big’s Mobile Detailing. He’s since turned that investment into a $120K/year car detailing business, and is on track to more than double that revenue in 2021.
Even more impressive, Isaiah started his auto detailing business when he was still a senior in high school and managed it remotely while he went to college. Rather than pushing for big revenue growth early, he focused on establishing smart processes and systems during his first few years in business. That’s got him set up for big growth now that he’s graduated and able to focus more time and energy on his car wash business.
In today’s interview, we’ll find out what equipment is required for a mobile detailing setup and how Isaiah maximized his tight budget when he started his detailing business. One way he cut down on start-up costs was by running Big’s Mobile Detailing from his personal car.
He’ll share the pros and cons of a mobile car wash business and how he built his brand without a physical location. We’ll also find out what he’s doing now to drive growth and how he plans to hit his goal of $750K/year in revenue by 2022.
Detailing a car doesn’t require any specialized training, and as you can see from Isaiah’s story it has a super low start-up cost. If you think car detailing could be the ideal business for you, this video is a must-watch! You can learn more about Big’s Mobile Detailing at their website, bigsmobile.com/upflip.

Truck brushes not being used on paint is common sense, not using a mitt on the body and tires is common sense, and I'm sure you've read the rest 100s of times. This inspires me even more to keep going on my detailing business. I’m still 17. I have like my whole neighborhood know I’m the guy that can detail cars. I’ve done paint correction, ceramic coatings, everything u can think off. I started since I was 15. Man I love the progress of my detailing thru the years. I actually broke my phone when I was 14 and it was brand new and I told him I would wash his cars as a sorry and thank you, and then I got into detailing that now it’s my passion.
Tho these guy aren’t professional detailers. They have a lot of flaws especially taking care of the paint to minimize scratches. Cant put a wash mitt and rinse in the damn ground. And can’t use the same rag for the paint and wheels. For me I throw away rags that fall in the ground. I’m ocd about it.

If I had his business skills and was making anything close to what he is, the number one thing I would still make sure is every single vehicle no matter if it’s a Mercedes or a Honda, is being detailed properly. Using that rv/truck brush on that black paint 😅 unless you’re doing a full correction after drying, this is probably just as bad as spending $3 to take it through a car wash. Not knocking that’s just my humble opinion and I am impressed by your business plan. I just had to say something after seeing those things in the same couple seconds.

When I go to a new "detailer" I always stand and watch the work being done on someone's car. If I see ANYTHING close to what I just saw in this video, like the young man taking a wash mit to the paint, and then tires/wheels... I would get in my car, without saying a word, and leave. Now he could have used a different wash mit for paint, and another for tires... but we don't know... but I'd bet my last dollar, he didn't. If I were to go into the detailing business, I would take over!

  • @itsandrew8758

I am shocked from what I have seen. Spraying off the wash mitt while on the ground, using the same wash mitt for paint and wheels, washing from bottom to top, using a brush. This should not be considered detailing, more like mobile carwash service. Big difference.

I hate to be negative, but any decent car detailer would watch this and say most of his cleaning techniques are exactly what NOT to do. For example:
-Using a brush on any paint(especially black paint, as it scratches easier) is never a good idea. On top of that, the guy was brushing from bottom to top, you are always suppose to clean and scrub from top to bottom, as there is usually less dirt to catch and scratch on the mitt as you work your way down. You don't want to catch rock chips while scrubbing the bottom, and moving your mitt to the top of the car and scratch it.
-To the guy laying the mitt on the cement gravel to power wash it, you should never re use a mitt or clay bar once it has hit the ground until you put it through the washer. All the cement gravel will get caught up in that mitt. Just don't ever lay it on cement, leave it in the bucket. Easy.
    - The one guy was using a mitt to wash the outside of the tires after washing the paint right there, then going back to the paint.....that's terrible...it is common knowledge to wash wheels and tires first, then move to the cars paint(with different mitts etc)
-The one guy was using a squeegee thing to get the water off the top of the black car. While they are good for getting water off windows, in the car detailing community they should not be used on paint, once you pick up a dirt or rock and swipe it down, it can create scratches. He has the money for equipment he should be using a leaf blower at the very least to dry the cars and use a microfiber or waffle weave towel to pat down and dry the cars to prevent more scratches. I can see maybe doing this on a cheap car, but those are expensive cars!!!
-The guy that was waxing with the pad, I'm hoping he wasn't using a wax that might catch on the black trim, bc some waxes can turn black trim white and gray....it's best to be careful and not liberal when waxing with as pad manually.
If I was this company's owner I would be embarrassed to have people see how my workers wash cars like this....hopefully he can improve on some of the miscues. All the best.

Hi Matt, thank you for your feedback! The brush that can be seen in the video is made to wash paint with. It is a micro bristle brush that has a very low chance of scratching the paint. The squeegee that was being used to dry the paint is sprayed off with the pressure washer before being used to almost completely remove all the dirt to reduce the chance of scratches. As for the wash mitt, cleaning from bottom to top, and cleaning the wheels and car with the same mitt, those are all things that we will be going over as a team. We also have insurance in the case that something does happen to the paint so that we can repair any damages:)
However, we are very proud of our team and the work they do. We have very good reviews and we are a very successful growing business that has been doing this for almost a decade:)

From 3:31-3:37…… using a brush to clean the paint on the car?……… yikes. My clients saw me doing that to their car it would be a loss the moment I even touch the tool
From 7:19-7:20 ….. Uses a wash mitt to scrub across the front driver side fender and continues on the drive or front tires…. I will only assume that he took that wash mitt and went right back on the fender… yikes.
From 9:43 - 9:46 ….. uses a wash mitt and goes across the quarter panel to the front side of the rear driver side tire and starts from the rocker panel and work his way up. If you know anything about a car getting dirty you should always either wash the wheels first and the rocker panel along the side or wash the lower section of the vehicle last saw you don’t mix contaminate what you picked up from the bottom which is the dirtiest part of the car and rub it against the cleanest part of the car which is the top part…… yikes
From 10:33 - 10:36 ….. using a brush to wash the exterior of the Range Rover . Do we use brushes on the exterior of a vehicle? Yes but those brushes are to weed out tight crevices such as emblems and tight areas where the wash mitt because of its thickness or a microfiber towel, can I agitate the debris that’s trapped in it. To add to that is these brushes or soft brushes the type of material is completely different should I brush they are using on the Range Rover.
From 12:48 - 12:50…. Look at the fender of the Mercedes Benz. The amount of holograms and light swirls instilled into it was because of poor wash technique and I’m not here to take away from his business because if he’s doing well then by all means…… but if there’s era I want to make sure out of my clear conscience that I’m able to educate anyone I see perform in those errors.

As someone who's been in the Detail business for 20+ years there is a difference between a car washer & a Detailer these are car washers and this is why the business has gone down people having people call themselves Detailers when they are car washers. Detailing is a skill you put a buffer or asked them to wet sand something the wouldn't have clue. Watching them even hold a shammy in their hands to dry the cars lets me know. But looking @ the cars I see he has a high end clientele so most of the cars he is doing are probably pretty cut & dry.

Would you mind explaining what in the video is done wrong? It is a micro bristle brush that has never scratched a car in the 7 years we have been a company. But we will definitely take this feedback into consideration going forwards. On the insides of the vehicles, we use microfiber towels on any surface that could be scratched and we have different cleaning chemicals for different surfaces as well. The squeegees we use are cleaned off before we use them on the paint so that we do not scratch the car. In the future, we will definitely make sure that our employees are not putting their wash mitts on the ground. We also have insurance in the case that something does happen to the paint so that we can repair any damages:)

Big respect but this was painful to watch. As a pro auto detailer who owns a great company in Raleigh, NC, the way he's teaching his employees to wash is entirely unprofessional. Their methods will for sure leave swirls in the paint of all vehicles they wash. The brush to the paint will do it 1000%. As a pro auto detailer, I'll never compromise my integrity for a dollar.
