That's a good tip to spread before using the slit seeder. Let's you see the seed and make sure the coverage is even. Really looking forward to seeing the progress!

Wish me luck. 100lbs of GCI cool blue in NJ. Two treatments of tenacity weeks ago Now scalped, bagged, power raked, bagged, plugged then seeded 10000ft². Irrigation running 5 mins 3x a day. Hardest labor I've done at home in 1 day.

I have to say, years ago I rented a Ryan Slit seeder. This seeder is like a seed drill that farmers use. It had tubes coming from the seed hopper that would direct the seeds down to multiple pairs of discs that would slightly penetrate into the ground, making a slit and dropping the seed in the slit. I had excellent seed to soil contact. I'm not sure this would be as good for areas with dirt only, but it worked great in my yard that had some grass growing as an over seeding application.

Rented this over the weekend. Really worked well for first 10 passes. Then found a chunk of belt on ground, then a second chuck another 50 feet away. Stopped and saw a belt sticking out of side guard. After removing the cover, I see one of two belts had jumped the pulleys. Called rental company on Sat but they were closing in 30 minutes. They told me this had happened in the past and they were now planning on returning machinbe to Stinger. They wanted me to take another brand, but I really liked the Stinger from Pete's and other videos I saw. I have used the Stinger Quad Aerator last fall for aerating, and it worked great. Not sure if anyone else has had a problem with 2400 slit seeder. I ran my drag screen over the area I had completed and it covered the seed much better than slit seeder. I'm watering for the next 2-3 weeks to see what I get.

Pete, ordered one of the RealTree GCI swag items. I've had great luck with the GCI Turf KBG so I figured I'd try to carry the GCI Turf luck into my tree stand with me this year. I own 300 acres in Western Maryland that I hunt, and growing crops for deer is really how I became addicted to watching grass grow, even though it wasn't grass! God bless.

I need to do exactly what you are doing here with a patch about 25x15 big. I have Poa and figure I'd kill everything and start from scratch. After the existing grass dies off, how long should I wait before doing anything? Thanks man! Have a great week!

  • @jeffborkowski

I like the idea of pre-applying the seed then working it in with the slice seeder. I would have thought the aggressiveness of the spinning tines would damage (crush) some of the seed. Good to know.

I killed of my front lawn for a bermuda grass renovation in July.. germination started on day 5 but man it took a while to really take off, holy moly it's growing like crazy now. I could mow every 2 days. I socked it to it with two rounds of starter fert and milorganite, then mother nature came on and we got absolute copious amounts of rain. It's about 75-80 percent filled in now. Some of the fescue I killed off tricked me and came back from the dead. It definitely looked dead go figure, I guess some was in dormancy as we had a record scorching hot June-July. I'll kill off the fescue survivors later this fall when my bermuda goes dormant.

Hey Pete I live in Greensboro and just moved to a new home behind lowes on battleground ave. It's got some good fescue but it's got a bit of everything else too. Ground ivy, spurge, clover, dandelion etc. All the common weeds in this area. What should I apply today before I overseed in a couple weeks? I've got mesotrione but it didn't seem to work on everything. The ground ivy/creeping Charlie is the worst. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I want that GCI TTTF to have no competition here in a couple weeks. Thanks Pete for all you do for the turf lovers out there!

    Hi Pete,
Could you possibly do a test plot, or just discuss your experiences with Rhizomatous/Lateral Spreading TTTF (Turf-Type-Tall-Fescue).
I think it is has pretty much been decided that 90%TTTF/10%KBG is optimal for just about all soil types and Cool/Transition zones (sorry Warm South, stick with Bermuda/Zyosia!). I am wondering with these Rhizomatous/Lateral Spreading TTTFs, if KBG is even needed anymore? The KBG doesnt tolerate low nutrients, low watering, and improper PH like TTTF does (TTTF is soooo forgiving!).
Would recommend testing Titan RX/Ultra/TLC blend grass seed, or the Super Turf II LS from United Seed. All of their NTEP results show these cultivars (firecracker, spyder, 4th millennium, Titanium) may be superior to the cultivars used in your GCI TTTF/TTTF&KBG blend, but offer additional disease resistance, salt resistance [Dog Pee/Road Salt], and self-repair whereas your cultivars do not. I know you are the type of man who wants the BEST in his products, so just curious if you're willing to take the CHALLENGE and do a test plot.
God bless and hope you respond!

Pete - how often would you water after overseeding to keep it moist? I know it depends on how hot it is and whatnot, but just a guesstimate would help. I have made a DIY irrigation system similar to what you have in the video around the perimeter of my house, using two 4 port timers, some PVC and Hunter MP rotators. Works great, but there's obviously coverage issues that I use my tripod impact sprinklers for. Anyhow, any rough estimate would help as I'm aerating and throwing down your KBG this weekend here in IL. Thanks brother man!

TheANGRIERonE I’m wondering the same thing. Most guide says 2-4 times a day, but the top of to soil still dries out in 1-2 hours, and I’m not sure if it is okay, or I should water it almost continuously between 11-3 when it is the hottest out there.

Why not use the sliit seeder first to expose nice new dirt then seed? I would think the slit seeder could push seed away from the slits it makes and leave slightly bare strips. You probably wouldnt be able to tell unless really looking close since the grass blends together when it gets taller.

But Pete! The longer seed takes to germinate and mature, the more chance of a major storm to wipe out your hard work and wash it all away. This is the reason why I prefer GCI tttf over Jonathan Green Black Beauty Original. Your seed germinates for me in four or five days. Black Beauty Original takes 10-14 days to germinate and it matures WAY slower also. Takes longer to thicken up. Haha if you ever need a salesman, I’m your man. But I wouldn’t sell anything if I didn’t believe in the product. Did I mention that Black Beauty is pretty dark, but the grass is coarser than GCI tttf and not as pretty in my opinion. PGM. Pretty Grass Matters. Sorry couldn’t help myself! Haha.

I’ve been using the glyphosate on the farm since it’s been around I believe and have not had any kind of problems or issues with it in the least Brother!! There has been absolutely no cancer in my family dating back to when my great grandfather immigrated from Germany and settled the farm. I don’t hesitate to use the stuff whenever I need it and it is a huge timesaver for me. As long as you don’t go swimming in the stuff twice a day then chances are extremely high that your gonna be fine and weed free !!
Take care buddy and good luck to ya!!
