    Is your lawn sparse? I recommend you overseed with a split / splice seeder. I used the Billy Goat model: OS900SPH lawn overseeder. If you follow my steps in my video you will be able to use any overseeder using my steps.
    Just remember, calibration is key. This video is second to the power rake I did last fall. This lawn was overrun with thatch. The owner had been leaving dead grass on the lawn for years thinking they were mulching. The dead grass allowed the rye and fescue to push out the desired Kentucky bluegrass. I purchased Barenbrug Kentucky Blue Grass in an effort to push out the rye and the fescue grass.
    I'm going to Overseed with a Split / Splice Seeder. Billy Goat Model: OS900SPH lawn overseeder so I get better germination. This machine will put the seed 1/8" to 1/4" under the soil. This will allow the seed to keep wet during the germination period and increase the germination rate.

    I understand your discouragement with seeding for clients.
    This year I will try doing all the steps leading up to a successful job for them but not put down seed.
    My problems last fall were finding that folks balked at going to our city for a permit to water during the time the soil temperature was right and instead chose to not irrigate and hope the fall rains came early.
    Which they did not.
    Also I had issues selling the slower germinating mix that was for shade, even though it does way better in the rainy, low sun hours area I live in.
    My saving grace was in a group of three homes, one man listened and wished to understand and his project came out the best of all and the other two homes front windows face his. 😀

      I hear you loud and clear. getting people to understand watering is 70% the service is like pulling teeth. You may want to consider overseeding early winter and letting mother nature do the work. You'll get 30% or so seed dieback but you and your customers will still receive the benefits of the overseed.

    Much to my other half's disgust I purchased an almost unused OS901SPH; I have 3-5 acres of lawn hence it made sense to me. I went a step further and purchased a chariot for it too; its a contraption also by Billy Goat, it has a couple of wheels and one can stand on the chariot especially for longer areas such as we have. Although I have the tine aerator, I often use this machine for aeration apart from its primary use as a slice seeder. You are dead right about calibrating the machine, it's so darn easy to get it wrong; don't pay too much attention to the rates on the label, they are a very rough guide at best. I love this machine but then I love all my toys.

    Love the info from your channel, one question, what is a realistic time frame to cover 1 acre using a cross pattern (two passes)? You mention the machine is slow and I would agree watching the video, specs I found specs on the web that states the machine will cover 20000 sq ft per hour (approx 1/2 acre), this seems to be an exaggeration, just looking for real world coverage rates, thanks.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  5 лет назад +2

      Love the question. IT TAKES FOREVER. The machine crawls and there's no way of making it go faster. Those specs sound pretty accurate TBH. I was mentally exhausted because of how slow it was going, not the labor stress.

    • @pestandlawnginja

      No you wouldn't need to cover it afterwards. it puts the seed into the ground and the roller helps push it in.

    Very informative! I appreciate yours effort and time to create and share. I have a question though. The part of my lawn that I want to overseed doesn't have much grass growing at this time. Its mostly dying winter weeds, has been basically scalped, and the soil is pretty accessible now. I did apply an application of Dimension preemergent at about 2.5 lbs/1000 sq ft on 2/22/21 hoping to help prevent a major re-germination of crabgrass this coming summer. Its been almost three months now so hoping to get a reasonable reseed and germination. Whats your thoughts?

    To see how your see is dispersing, do it over a driveway for about a 10 ft strip. You can then see what pattern is laying down. Sweep the seed back up and put it back in the hopper. A little dirt won't hurt a thing.

      Do it over a tarp placed on a paved surface. After you make your passes, you can measure the amount of seed dispersed to see if it was dispersed at the correct rate.

      Thanks for the comment. I did not do a top dressing on this lawn. The idea behind the machine is that it helps "inject" or plant the seed 1/8" to 1/4" deep into the soil so you don't need to top dress. The company I work for is www.myallgreen.com . Just to be upfront we do not provide these types of service. Our focus is mainly pest control and lawn fertilization and weed control.

    When is the best time of year to overseed? I want to do a KBG overseed this year.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  6 лет назад

      IMO april is the best month. KBG takes about 4 to 7 weeks to properly germinate. Takes longer to get the rhizomes to set in properly. Blade growth takes another month or so. Its so slow to establish. Once it's in its good to go. I've had good luck putting seed out over the winter and doing over seeds. Sure I've had some die back but mother nature comes through and takes care of the process as she feels. Has worked for me well.

    • @pestandlawnginja

      I didn't like the slit seed slicer. I much prefer to use a scarifier like the sun joe, rock and rocker, or the ryobi aerator. One way or another you should always remove debris off the soil surface and this machine in this video does not do that.
      To answer your question the seeds worked into the channels well, the seeds remained undamaged. the machice worked as its supposed to but was very slow. Hope that helps.

    Why do overseeders have the rake behind the seed hopper? Doesn't that mean the seeds will drop in front of the rake hence the seed will be dropping first and missing the rake holes?

    I just rented this machine a couple months ago and I had a hard time getting the depth set. Did you experience any problem with that? My lawn is not very level either so I have some places where it didn't slit at all and no new growth there. Overall it did pretty good though...

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  5 лет назад +1

      Figuring out the depth was not fun at all hahaha. Took me a while to figure out. The issue is the blades or disks get worn down after every use. So the set it and forget it guide isn't accurate in the slightest. Definitely the most frustrating part. I had to keep testing output for about an hour before I got it dialed in. Since I was crosshatching I wanted to be between 2.5 and 3lbs of grass seed per 1000ft2. If I were to do it again I would have run the machine then hand spread the seed afterward.

      I was at a 5.0 to a 5.5 on my final passes. Keep in mind I was putting putting down 5lbs of seed per 1000ft2. I used the deepest setting and kept the setting on the crosshatch the same. If I did it again I would be tempted to use the split splice seeder with zero seed in it and run the machine then hand spread the seed (use a spreader)

      This is a great observation Lawn Ginja! I recently overseeded with the Classen but to be honest I was a bit disapointed in the overall mechanics of the machine. Nothing against the Classen either, I believe all slit seeder/overseeders basically operate the same way - basically cutting slices in the ground (like a detacher) and then dumping a little seed on top. Before I knew how they worked, I was thinking that I the machine would actually be depositing seed 1/8" into the soil. SOME of the seed may land in the slots the machine digs, but I would say 5-15% were buried and the rest just landed on top of the soil. That made me think, as you did Ginja, well damn that was a huge pain in the ass manhandling that machine. Why not just rent a detachter and the let the knives of that machine do the exact same job (with no seed) and then come back over with broadcast spreader to lay down the seed. MUCH quicker, and roughly the same results with a low percentage of the seed landing directly into the slots, but stlil worthwhile if the soil is already ready. The big thing is once you go over it with broadcast spreader, then take back side of a leaf rake and lightly work the seed into the soil. Also, because renting equipment, reserving for a special date, driving far distances, is a royal pita, could we not just buy this for $110 and use the scarifyer function to get soild prepped in place of www.amazon.com/Sun-Joe-AJ801E-Dethatcher-Collection/dp/B01FEATL2I

      You're giving me PTSD hahaha. It was painfully slow. I think overall it took me about 3 hours to do 7,000ft2. I'd say I got better seed bedding than you did with the machine I had. I think the primary issue I was having was the speed of the machine and it's my belief that the flails were needing to be replaced. Most likely ground down to the point you couldn't use the depth setting. The last go around I used my aerator and aerated 3 passes and dropped the seed. It worked really well.

  • @Drew1734

    Would it make sense to dethatch before doing this? I have looked to renting one of these but it seems like it dethatches as it seeds. But in my mind, I wouldn’t want any thatch covering up my seed impeding sunlight and growth, so I don’t understand why these machines dethach and seed at the same time, seems counterintuitive.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  3 месяца назад

      absolutely! dethatch first for sure. this machine is really just tilling, it technically breaks the thatch layer. but removing the excess debris will help the seed thrive.

    Interesting choice of seed in this video that no one else seems to recommend, and you know what I noticed about the barenbrug? Its rated NUMBER ONE in regional NTEP trials for my region! Everyone seems to really push the popular seeds like midnight and award kbg, but as it turns out it's only middling performance for my region. I recommend everyone check out the NTEP seed trials. I just wish it wasnt $300 a bag for this stuff. Any ideas where I might be able to find a 10 or 20 pound bag? I'm overseeding my lawn this fall, was thinking about getting the Jonathan green black beauty seed, it's about 1/3rd the cost even though it's a seed mix. But apparently a very good seed mix where the tall fescue leaves actually have similar appearance and lead size to the kbg.
    I just dethatched my lawn yesterday, going to do pre em today, and I'm still torn on if I should skip the slice seeder for when I overseed or just do a double pass core aeration and maybe a second dethatch just to mix in the seed on the surface and beat up the soil enough, hoping that alone creates good seed to soil contact. I've also seen some guys use the slice seeder without putting grass in the hopper and just using it to open up the soil. Any thoughts on how you would do this again?

      If you watch my Tenacity Lawn series on the playlist you'll see I had really good luck doing a triple aeration pass and over seed. It's coming along nicely. If I used the slit slice seeder I would use the machine just to do the gooves and then I would overseed. It was a pain in the butt to use and calibration was really tough. Here is a link to barenbrug where they list suppliers across the nation.

      @@pestandlawnginja thanks for the reply, I appreciate the insight on this! Just sounds like those slit seeders are going to be more trouble than it's worth. Looks like aeration will get good results too and then I wont have to rent multiple machines then. I dethatched my lawn for the first time yesterday and I'm totally beat today. Including clean up time, it took me probably 4 hours! I want to make the seeding process as simple as possible, while still getting acceptable germination rates. I'll be seeding into an existing midwest lawn with a blend of a bunch of junk I cant even identify lol. Hopefully tenacity combined with a heavy overseed should crowd out whatever is currently in there. That's the hope at least. Anyway this post is getting long again lol thanks again and keep up the great videos!

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  6 лет назад

      I've only had the pleasure of looking at one, not using one. My thoughts are it will work just fine assuming you take the time to calibrate the machine. That was my disfunction. It took me about 30min to get it calibrated to put out 5lbs of seed per 1000ft2.

      I rented the Classen from Home Depot this past summer. With the seed gate completely open I could not get the seed to spread (it would flow about 1" of seed then stop dropping). That combined with the machine throwing the belt twice while using it made me swear off the Classen machine. The experience was so frustrating that I went out and bought a used Billy Goat similar to this one. I rent every year so it seemed like the logical course.

      Good call on the grass seed date! We've used several bags of the same batch and had good success rates with the germination.

    • @SimonCoates
      @SimonCoates 5 лет назад +1

      You should always do a germination test before sowing. Put approx 30 seeds on a damp doubled up piece of kitchen towel. Fold the towel to cover the seeds, put in an open plastic bag and leave it in a warm place. The seeds should germinate in 5-10 days. You can then judge the germination rate and also check the seedlings for fungal infection. If the germination rate is less than 60% complain to your supplier, or if the seed is old stock just sow more seed to make up the difference.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  5 лет назад

      A reasonable price IMO would be between $150 and $200. There are different types of fescue that range from fine to broadleaf. The RTF is a self repairing fescue. It shoots rhizomes, tail clipping, under the ground and forms a new blade of grass. This allows the grass to thicken up and self repair. The blade thickness is similar to Kentucky Bluegrass. It has 20" roots and is more tolerant of shade and heat than kentucky bluegrass.

    Ginga that lawn is screaming at me. It seems fairly cold there. I would have cut it very low to get out most of that dead grass and then I would have dethatched it and core-aerated it AND fertilized it with a quick fast-release nitrogen and THEN I would have waited 1 week and used your reseeder.
