How to overseed lawn: overseeding grass with billy goat overseeder

When you lawn is ugly, patchy or thin, reseeding or overseeding grass can give you the lawn of your dreams. We used a combination of pulverized brown dirt, fescue and bluegrass seed, an overseeder, starter fertilizer and water as the necessary tools to get the job done. Overseeding is definately a DIY project.

So let's get started on how to overseed lawn.
There are 4 parts to lawn overseeding using an overseeder. Spring overseeding or fall overseeding uses the same materials.
1) prepare the yard - cut the grass low and add any soil amendments the provide the best base for the seed.
2) rent an overseeder and reseed the yard. Reseeding using and overseeder or slit seeder is more physically taxing than mowing the yard, but it is worth the effort. The Billy Goat overseeder we rented was simple to use and worked well.
3) Apply the starter fertilizer to the lawn. Using starter fertilizer is important in that it does not contain weed killer. Weed killer will kill the new seedlings.
4) Finally, Water the newly overseeded yard. Start with a heavy watering initially, Then follow that with daily waterings - enough to keep the soil moist. Dont over do. You can ater too much.
We overeseeded in the fall which is optimal. You can overseed your lawn in the spring as well.

How does doing what you did compare to putting in sod? Both from a cost and manual effort perspective.

Hey Lori,
Slit seeding or overseeding 2 yards took what amounted to a full day including spreading a half inch of top - dressing dirt for one yard that was lumpy.
Total cost - seed, fertilizer, and renting overseeder was under $500 for 2 yards - approximately 12,000-14000 sq ft.
Sod costs about $0.50 per sq ft so this whole project would have been at minimum $6000-7000.
That would be a no wait yard, but at quite a price.
