- Today I'll discuss and show you how we decide what type of seeding process to use when repairing a damaged, stressed, lawn with dead spots.
I'll show you what to tell the lawn guy, and why it's important to make an informed decision. I'll explain the differences of slice seeding, slit seeding, and Over seeding. I'll tell you the when and why for each of them.
Watch and see how i plant the grass seed and what it looks like after the seeding process.

I have so much money i just can’t find someone knowledgeable like you in my area to do the work
I think the direct sunlight, mowing too low, and not watering enough during very hot days are a huge part of the problem. All cool season lawns do amazing in cooler temps of the Spring and Fall. I keep my lawn at 4.5 to 5 inches during very hot sunny days. Thanks for the education on the slice seeding!
Great explanation of the process!
Great video ! Thanks for the tips. Now I know which way I`m going, Thanks !
i have learned a lot! keep the good job
Awesome tips!
Awesome information
Thank you from Wapakoneta.
Wooow great review thanks .
Thanks for sharing some of these tips with us, I'm still somewhat new to the industry but always trying to learn as much as I can
So glad that you mentioned RTF!! It's the best grass type esp for Northeast. Have you any videos of overseeding/ slice seeding RTF, before and after?
Good video man.
Thanks !
👍Good stuff! This will help many out for sure. I bought a MANTIS years ago & the slit wheels. Drop my seed every couple years then run the MANTIS. Stays looking good. Best purchase as a homeowner I’ve ever made. Along w/ the irrigation & quality seed.
(SUBd) ✌️
i just ordered a Mantis for exactly the same purpose. Two questions, please. Confirming you drop the seed, THEN run the Mantis over it? Second; do you install your aerating blades in the aggressive or less-aggressive position? Thank you.
@@jmljml5065 Hello. I install the cultivator wheels pointing away. I dethatch 1st, rake out then spread the new seed along w/ some Scott’s lawn soil (my preference) then pull the MANTIS backwards, full speed, slicing and burying seed w/ the new top soil to help a bit.
Good luck.
@@majorpayne5289 Appreciate the info; thank you.

Good information
Thanks
Tons of great info in this video! Thank you!!
Come back in spring and do a before and after? What was your quote to the customer for this?? I know seeding is expensive
I suspect the culprit was too short mower setting and lack of watering.
Hey enjoyed your video on the slice seating.
I am also located in west central Ohio and have experienced some lawn damage from grubs this year.
I was hoping to use a slice seeder along with a blue grass blend of seed.
It is mid September and I’m wondering if it is too late in the year to do this process?
Glad you liked the video. It should be fine if you get it done in September. We actually do seeding well I to October. Good luck with the seeding!
Great video! How many bags or pounds of seed did you use to seed yard?
Different seeds call for their own rates. I like to use 10lbs per 1000 sqft. With blue/rye seed. The bag will tell you 6-8lbs.
If I were going to top dress a yard that's in pretty bad shape would I benefit from slit sending before or after the top dressing?
Yes, most definitely. You can do the seeding before or after, but don't top dress more than a week after the seeding if you do the slicing part first.
Called several so called lawn care companies locally. None of them slice seed.
Sorry to hear that. Good luck with your repair work. (if you're in Cbus you can call us)
I could really use your expertise here. Please help. I’m so overwhelmed and not exactly sure where to start.
Sorry, we only service Central Ohio. I'm sure there's a pro in your area too. Good luck!
I'm in Lawrence ks I had a nice backyard now it has been over ran with crab grass. I've tried everything but nothing stops it. I do have a section where nothing grows only dirt. I even killed the backyard with roundup 2 different times. Starts out looking great till crab grass takes it over. Any suggestions.
First off, proper diagnosis is key. Many times a customer will tell me they have Crabgrass but it's actually something different. Crabgrass is fairly easy to control if done correctly, and applications are made at the correct times. Pre-emergents in spring and Quinclorac sprays in late spring and summer if needed.
Do you have to top dress when using slit seeder? Any straw or peat moss needed?
No, not when seeding into an existing turf base... Even if it's dead.
@@ColumbusLandscapers Thanks for responding so fast. So I killed off existing lawn with glyphosate, and once dead I scalped it down to 1in. If I slit seed I don’t need to put anything over seed bed, correct? Should I irrigate prior to slit seeding to make ground soft? What depth do you recommend setting slit seeder at for Kentucky Blue Grass. Wish you were in my area, I would hire you to do this for me.
@@desmorider747 You're on the right track, be sure to give it at least 2 weeks before seeding. You can water ahead but don't do the seeding when wet. Seed only needs to make soil contact so 1/2" to 1" depth is good.
Thanks for the helpful video! Why do you recommend broadcast seeding when the lawn is 75% or more in good condition? Is it because the slice seeder causes some damage to the lawn or is it because you don’t need as high a success rate when you’re lawn is already in fairly good condition?
Both reasons you mention are applicable. Thanks for watching 👍
@@ColumbusLandscapers thanks! Unless you’re trying to overseed TTTF into a mostly PRG / KBG / FF lawn…I noticed you recommended slit seeding in one of your other videos for this particular situation for more even coverage.
True.. that would help a faster and more consistent transition if you're going that route. Otherwise, aeration and overseeding several times is another option.
Slice seeding.....possible where there is a sprinkler system installed?
Sure it is. You just need to mark the sprinkler heads and valve boxes to avoid damage to those. Lines should be buried deep enough you wouldn't have to worry about hitting those while slicing
I know I’m late to the conversation as this was posted 2 yrs ago but would you top dress the lawn now or no?
No need . You can see the results. Thanks for watching
Can you slice seed without aeration?
Yes, but aeration prior to slicing is strongly recommend because of several factors. Mostly the ground is uneven and the slicer doesn't go very deep. This will leave pockets of unseeded areas where there are low spots.
Do you have a follow up vidio? if so i couldnt find it, thanks
There are some after photos at the end of the video. Also, I have several other videos on seeding. Thanks for watching!
@@ColumbusLandscapers thank you
Columbus Ohio right?
How exactly does it cover the seed?
It cuts the seed in to the soil and uses thatch to cover the seed.
can this machine damage sprinkler heads?
Yes, we always have customers mark the heads prior to our service.
Are you available in Connecticut?
Sorry just Ohio.
5:41 careful your shadow is going to stab someone
😯😆🕵️
What happened to your stinger unit?
We are still using the stingers too. 👍
I have a beautiful lawn after look very ugly now I have another problem bcz i have new fresh very healthy green grass all rabbit from all neighborhood come to my lawn to take breakfast, lunch obviously dinner 😱
Paintball gun.. 🤠
I would still dethatch.. and lots of water
The slice seeder dethatches at the same time it's seeding. Then that thatch will stay on the surface to cover up the seed and provide moisture retention. Just the same as if you were putting down straw. Thanks for watching!
