    SAM, I'm so glad to see your new video. I'm doing the same thing right now, and my method for spreading [sowing] the seeds. long ago I learned the benefits of keeping peat moss oh-hand and DRY. I mixed my germinated seeds with peat, and it worked very well.
    On a personal personal note: When I was a teenager, my Step-dad told me that I was going to be the most patient man in the world because I wasn't using any of my patience as a kid

      I actually read about using peat moss, but it´s so hard to find in Sweden, it´s pretty much only used for the floors in stables it seems so "normal" stores don´t sell it over here, have to find a store that sells horse stuff to get hold of it. But I will definitely try it out next time, sounds like a good idea!

    I did this for perennial rye grass and had germination 4 days and had to put it down by day 6. I like your honesty. My roots ended it up tangling too and couldn’t use the fert cart to spread it and had to mix dry soil and fertilizer and threw it by hand for an 1,000 sqft area.

      Yeah, I really need to find a better way of spreading the seeds, it started germinating fast, but it´s germinating now in patches on the lawn, I guess from the seeds clumping together. So I really liked the faster germination part but if I can´t find a more optimal way of spreading it it is more of a hassle than just seeding normally unfortunately. Hope you had better luck with that part mate. Thanks for dropping by, appreciate it.

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  6 месяцев назад +2

      Hey mate, well if you are seeding larger areas and need more seed, then this works better for that. If I had smaller patches then I would just mix seeds with soil in a bucket or wheelbarrow. It was way easier to mix it when it pre-germinated in soil. That actually made me think that I could have just mixed the pre-germinated seeds in a wheel barrow with soil and spread it that way. That would maybe be better than using sand.

    Hi Sam ! You are so funny 😁 I really loved your video, especially when you were trying to open the seed bag....Your experiments are very interesting. Did you scarify and prepare the area before putting the seed? One thing lawn care has taught me is to be patient...Tall fescue that I planted in October germinated in 7-10 days. Now I have a perfect green carpet. I don't know how it will hold up during the summer heat... it remains to be seen... I read that tall fescue is the most heat resilient of cool season grasses. I am very interested in seeing your results in a next video.

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  6 месяцев назад +2

      Hi Lucy, I should really edit the videos more so I look smart instead of that 😂
      For sure, I scarified, aerated, I did it during my full lawn renovation so I think it had a good bed to germinate. Sadly our temps dropped today and tomorrow we might even get frost. So, that´s Sweden for you, hopefully some of it lives. Tall fescue should be the most heat resilient but that´s the same as saying some species are shade tolerant, doesn´t mean they don´t need any sun at all. So tall fescue will cope with heat to a point, but after that it will start to struggle same as all cool season grasses. But I think you will be fine, wish I could see a picture of the tall fescue, we don´t have that much of it over here :)

    I’ve seen your way and I also saw someone else soak the seed for 24 hours the first day and then after that they just kind of hosed the bag down each day to keep the seeds wet instead of soaking them in water under they saw germination. I wonder if that would help make the seeds just a little less wet and easier to spread. I’ve never tried either, but I may have to do this.

One bag I did had the same issue you had in your video where it germinated too much and clumped together. @SamsLawn  6 месяцев назад

      Hey Chris, same for me. The pre-germination it self worked just fine, a little too good, but as you say, if there isn´t a more optimal way of spreading the seeds without it clumping together then this might just be more hassle to be honest. It´s been almost 2 weeks now since I did it and the seeds germinated on the lawn but you can see that it did it in patches, so it seems even with the sand it still clumped together. I think next time I might try to mix it with top soil and use the landzie to spread it, maybe that will spread more evenly. How has your turned out?

    • @chrisryan8863

      @@SamsLawn Hey Sam. Mine is starting to turn out pretty well. Being patient is the key, and like you, I am not as patient as I need to be with my grass germination projects. I have told my family too many times through the years to stay off the lawn that it can defeat part of the purpose of having one! What I had to do is repeart he pre germination process a few times and I put the seeds down earlier and then (even my hand in thin spots) and then covered it with potting soil. I like using potting soil that is organic and it is doesn't cost much. It covers the seed well but doesn't weight it down like plain soil does. But it helps the seed to have contact with soil and germinates quicker. If I do a larger area again I will use my Landzie and put the seed either in peat moss or a very dry soil or compost like you mentioned. I think that will help. One of your viewers also mentioned he used granulated lime to mix and his seed and spread it. That is probably cheaper than Millorganite but if your soil doesn't need the lime you wouldn't want too much of that on the lawn either.

      You talking about the water in the bucket with the seed? Doesn't that create toxic water that will kill your grass

    • @CMDRSloma
      @CMDRSloma 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@The_k1d206Toxic? No, it is all natural, there is nothing toxic there, it's all plant material and bacteria, etc. What you want is microbial life in the soil, so your grass or whatever you are growing is going to have food. Microbial life eats that which cannot be absorbed by plants and breaks it down into compounds and elements that can be absorbed by plants. This is soil life, nothing is toxic here. For example, your synthetic fertilizer contains only what manufacturer put in it is ready to be absorbed by plants. Soil biology beat anything that humans invented so far, bacteria, bugs, earthworms, mycorrhizal fungi they need food and this water is their food but in return this whole ecosystem will provide for plants. This is why while organic might not be powerful injection of nutrients compared to synthetic, it is wholesome. Feed the soil, not the plants, and the soil will provide. I don't use synthetic any more, I use sieved homemade compost to make compost teas and liquid seaweed and my lawn and the rest of the garden is lush and green.

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  6 месяцев назад

      So from what I have read, the "toxic" referred to is not really anything toxic in that sense. It´s natural stuff coming out of the seeds when germinating to "warn" off other plants nearby to kind of stay away. It´s a natural defence mechanism when grass seeds germinate. So it is toxic but natural toxicity so to say :)

      Hey mate,
      It's easy to get confused here, I confuse myself even when trying to explain this 😅
      Submerge the seeds 24 hours
      Take out the bag, let it drain for 24 hours
      Submerge it for 2 min in fresh water
      Then drain it for 24 hours
      Submerge 2 min in fresh water
      So on and so forth until it germinates
      Hope that's clear? ☺️

      Hi, not quite, so after the initial 24 hours you take out the submerged seeds. Throw away the water and let it dry off for 12 or 24 hours, then you submerge it again, just for 1 min or 2, then let it drain again for 12 or 24 hours, you do that for 4-5 days or until you see the seeds cracking and are just about to germinate. beware not to wait as long as I did, was a pain to spread it once they germinated too much. I feel like pre-germinating is not a good idea. If u dry out the seed in the sun, u are killing and decreasing germination. Also, u lose more germination if u let it sprout too soon or if u have work and can’t spread it immediately. I think it’s easier to just seed like normal

    • @FixItWithMe
      @FixItWithMe 6 месяцев назад +2

      Plus, everyone has trouble spreading it. The amount of $$ u need to spend on Milirgonate to spread a large amount of seed isn’t worth it. Pre-germinating is just good for seeding same spots in the spring in my opinion

      Hey Mate, I do agree with you that it was a bigger hassle to spread it than I imagined it would be and as you say I didn´t want to dry it out too much. Just tried this. What a nightmare. For people with family, jobs etc., this is a nightmare. The water changes are easy, it’s the fact that you need to wait days to get a consistent texture to spread. I’ll never do this again, unless to cover small bare spots. There’s a reason why pros don’t pre-germinate.

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  2 месяца назад +1

      I hear you mate, it was quite the hassle once the seeds had germinated a bit too much, also if you don´t have something perfect to spread it with, then it´s even more of a hassle. The only part that is a benifit is that it will save you some germination time, but to be honest, if I cannot find a way to make the spreading easier, I would rather just seed the normal way.

      @@briankahre7439 pros in the sports turf industry, exactly how I typed it in my original comment. Not “RUclips Pros.” I’m no where near a pro, and I managed. I have a friend who literally hired a landscaper (here in CT) last week to do the process for them and they had seedlings within 2 days. I did it with a full time job and wife/toddler a few years back. It saved me up to 4 days of watering/changing sprinkler spots which amounts to many hours as opposed to minutes with changing the water for a couple 5 gallon buckets. Very helpful when I did not have in ground irrigation yet. Also saved a ton on water for those 3-4 days that I saved.
      -Soak for 24hrs.
      -Then rinse (not soak) every 12 hours.
      -Just have to be mindful of seed type since it determines how long you need to do the process for
      -Then mix the somewhat dried seeds with milorganite or granular humic acid so it can be put down using a spreader.
      -It’s really not that complicated.

    • @GRASShole21

      @@briankahre7439 I think my comment came off as harsh when it wasn’t supposed to, so I apologize. No I’m not referring to RUclips pros (btw I’m not one). By professionals, I was referring to the ones that manage pro sports fields that always have pregerminated seed on deck during sports seasons. It’s not as popular with local landscapers, however I do know of one here in Connecticut who did it for a family friend last week successfully. I did actually go through the process for my 5k sqft front yard 2 years ago with a full time job and wife. Saved me hours not moving sprinklers around for as long since I didn’t have an inground system yet. Also saved money with water. You’re right that it can be a nightmare if the seed is too moist. Timing the start of the pre germination correctly along with enough time for it to dry (right before seeding day) is very important. I skipped the last water rinse and just shifted the bags 24 hours prior. Then spread the seed in a big tote to get more airflow 12 hours prior. Then mixed it with milorganite to help spread it.
