Used the same seeder from a local rental shop. Be sure to get the optional chiropractic adjustments as that thing is a beast to maneuver!
Nice to Kevin working. Afterward he can bring the “Cah “ around and leave.
Don't think I've ever seen Kevin work so hard.
Great video I went out rented one did great job no mess no raking
Roger makes theses videos instant classics!
Since you are going over twice you suggest dividing the 4# of final seed rate in half. at the 4 +/- minute mark you say set at 32.5 to get 50% of the 4#/sf seed rate. But the chart shows 2.2# at a setting of 55
It would be nice to see the new grass
Exactly the comment I was looking for, would love to see it before and after.
Wish I had me one of them slice seeders! Who wants to rip out the old grass and rake it up anyway. Great tool that! 😃
This is a great video. The only problem is nobody seems to rent a real "slice seeder" like in this video. They only rent overseeders or slit seeders which are just dethatching machines (power rake) with a seed hopper. So it makes a huge mess pulling up all of the thatch and grass. I wish I could find a slice seeder like the one in your video.
Does anyone know what model of slice seeder this is? I have the same problem trying to find one to rent.
Just get a aerator then seed with spreader.
I need to find one of these machines! The house I bought sat empty for a long time and my lawn is in really bad shape. This machine would save me a ton of money compared to sodding or hauling in new topsoil.
Gypsum will neutralize those dog spots. You can pick that up anywhere. I'd also advise throwing that slit seeder in the lake. Get a dethatcher with a bagging attachment to clean the yard up. Then aerate, over seed, fertilizer and soil corrections such as the gypsum.
Thomas Paquette thanks! Looking for good tips. :)
Kevin, read the chaaaatttt to know the appropriate amount of seed to use. Then use a good startaaaaa fertilizer. Lastly, get the dog to stop craping all over the yaaaaaad!
Alex & Erika take the daaag for a caaahh ride
Well if this guy said car keys and khakis...would we be able to tell the difference?
Alex & Erika bar harbor hahahahahaha

The starter fertilizer/crabgrass preventer in 1 has been taken off the market. Turns out it WAS preventing some new grass seed from germinating.
Like they say, if it's too good to be true, it probably is.
A cross cut seeder is great for new yards also!
YOU HAVE TO SHOW THE RESULTS OR THE VIDEO IS USELESS.
I WILL YELL AT THIS EPISODE OF A TV SHOW THAT AIRED 15 YEARS AGO YEAHHHHHH
kjjlokkkkllm hggy

I am struggling with a lawn that had 19 years of neglect. Lime. Top soil. Seed. Mulch. Fertilizer. Seed again. More top soil. (Four bleepin’ rounds!) I hope it is a great lawn by 2021.
For a bumpy/uneven lawn, should I add 50/50 compost and sand first, then overseed in the same day?
WHY DO WE NEVER GET TO SEE WHAT THESE PROJECTS LOOK LIKE WHEN CONPLETED!!??? If we can't see what the end result is of all this work, how do we know that this is what we're looking for?
We're gonna STAHT THA MACHINE!
I have Scott’s feed and water spray already, 29-0-3, I have a bare lawn(just soil), can I use this and plant my grass seed or will it kill it? I don’t think the spray I have is weed and feed, it says water and feed but I’ve been told a few diff things. Thx in advance.
What does Mr. Cook do in the winter months? Snowblowers?
And Kevin, whatever you do, you're gonna wanna make sure you start right in the middle of the lawn for each pass.
Wrong. He needs to stahhht
Can you make some videos about lawn care/repair for southern grasses? I really like your videos but I get almost no use out of them here in FL.
Correct me if I am wrong ...BUT....would it not be easier all the way around if you did the perimeter FIRST instead of at the end ? That way he has room to turn.
Blue grass grows in Texas. Fred
Will that refinish hardwood floors?
Should you lay a top dressing down after using a slit seeder?
Would this method work if you wanted to put in native wildflowers instead of grass?
The days before Roger got sick and could still work.
They looked at me like I had three heads at local garden store when I asked for “stahta furtiliza”
Oh, can I please hire this guy >,
They should do one where they grow food LOL
Where to get slice seeder? I can't find amazon or home depot?
Applying new seed and pre emergent at the same time will interfere with seed germination ( for sure in southern lawns ) . Most pre-emergents for weeds will prevent grass seed from germinating. More than likely it will inhibit the growth of most grass seed. besides Tupersan that is Siduron based herbicide that are usually very expensive .
+Blake Roberts Actually no, Scotts has a new starter fert that also kills weed when they come in. They turn white. It works, I just used it last year. Had great germination of grass seed and the weeds that tried to come up died.
Jay Smooth I'm talking about pre emergents not post emergents such as Scott's that your references . Pre and post are two completely different things
@@blakeroberts349 They aren't 2 completely different things when using a product like Tenacity. It is both and pre and post emergent that does not harm the germination of grass seed.
They should always come back a few weeks later and record footage of the final result, otherwise it's like seeing only half the project.
You’re telling me you don’t know what grass looks like ?
They did it once after rodger seeded the front lawn. It looked amazing. Trust me this guy is good.
And the homeowner didn't water it...
Was all work in Kevin's job description when he signed up?
i think hes only there if the house owner doesn't want to be on camera or, doesn't want to do the work.
Dog rocks. They totally work!
Just strap a couple of seed pouches (with tiny holes punched out) onto the back of the dog so that he drops grass seed whenever he runs around the backyawd!
Hi please answer me where can i bey it
How much the cost
What starter fertilizer did you use? I did not know of any that had a crabgrass preventive.
Ava Feret they don’t use starter fertiliser, they use STAAATA fertiliser
Would I have to use top soil or peat moss after using the Slice Seeder?
No...just make sure to water at least 5x a day for short 5 min periods...so this for at least 10-12 days, then do 2 watering a for longer periods..the key is to keep the seed moist but not flooded..hand watering is recommended for first watering due to the harshness of impact sprinklers.
@thisoldhouse We live in Pittsburgh... We over seed our law last fall... We want to put crab grass preventer this spring... We have thin layer of thatch.. Should we de thatch the lawn before putting the crab grass preventer?
Lawn*
Always dethatch first before using pre emergents
It would be best to de thatch prior to adding anything to your lawn cause it’ll just go on the dead layer before the dirt which wouldn’t be effective so yes Dethatch
You should have requested a picture from the homeowner after it was done so we can see how it turned out.
Should you rake off the debris after you use this machine? If not, it looks like it would smother the grass. ??????
Would someone please get Rogah a Boston Lagah?
what time of year should this be done, I live in central PA?
If you use pre-emergent in your lawn in the spring, the best time to seed anywhere would be the fall (Mid Sept - Early Oct.). If your tried to do both at the same time the pre-emergent would kill the seed. If you don't use pre-emergent you cant seed in the spring.
Would have been nice to see the results.
no after pic? how do we know if it works?
what kind of pre emergent allows grass seeds to grow?
exlowcarber tupersan
Thumbs up if you’re from the north or south shore and Rogers accent sounds normal.
Hey Rodger, have you seen my car keys? Your khakis? No my car keys. Yee your khakis what i said joe. Got dammit Rodger my car keys. Yee joe ther by the lumper.
What was the name of that fertilizer that you use at the end?
Stahtuh fertilizer
What did you use instead of produamine to prevent crabgrass?
May have been Tenacity. Works great.
You can just leave all the thatch in the ground?
A look at how it came out would have been nice...
results........
I really wanted to see the regrowth
Is there a paaaht two, for this video?
How did the fungus get taken care of?
So what magic fertilizer allows seeds to germinate and kill weeds as well...genuinely curious.
Try Tupersan (granule) or Tenacity (liquid spray). Both are good pre emergents and are safe for seed.
When is the best time to do this? Can it be done inAugust? Will the seed take?
do this is mid sept
He said there was an agitator at the bottom..... I was waiting for my ex wife to pop out.
But what if you have sprinklers? What then?
I call this a slit seeder, and used one on my lawn 20 years ago. It was a fucking bitch to run, but it did work.
you never show final result
Shame
wouldn't it have still been a good idea to power rake it then do this?
+turdsandwicher I agree. seems to have dead grass buildup, lol, I don't like crab grass preventer. I use granular fert and spray weed control where needed.. less chemicals and currency. and no pest control. Do you think lime would help where dog wee' s?
Wish they would show results.
What homeowner is going to buy a huge expensive machine like the slice seeder? Couldn't we use a dethatcher/scarifier machine costing less than $175 then lay down some mulch, new seed fertilizer then seed.
Slice seeder attached to the tractor
Not disappointed but read that as "A Slice of Seeder" and like isn't that Cedar?
... and the dog will continue peeing on the lawn and burning the grass after all that work.
But they didn't do the whole lawn. The section in front of the camera when it's elevated was left for the dog. I wonder what kind of dog they've got. All the dogs I've had fertilized the lawn so much that I had to mow the lawn weekly.
Charles Damery I did not see a fenced in area for the dogs. I've had dogs for 40 years and they pee where there is green, not brown. No fence, they wander and sniff to the green area. The alkaline urine pH is what burns the lawn, it does not fertilize...
Porsche924Tim In most of Canada especially in the Maritimes the soil is acidic, so the pet urine would only help the soil. They said at the start the dog used the whole backyard. Maybe they installed a fence later.
Porsche924Tim GET RID OF THE DOG.. OR WALK THE DOG INSTED.. AND THEN THIN OUT THE SILVER MAPLE AND CUT DOWN THE CRAB APPLE WITH ALL THE YUCKY FRUIT.. THEM FERTILIZE AND FERTILIZE AND CUT 3 INCHES LONG
Get some cats, since the cats have starting going on the lawn, it's gotten thicker and I get to warn the neighboiurhood kids to not play on the lawn and not roll around on the grass. It' great!
Would be nice if the seed bin cover had a window.
when is the best time to do this? spring, fall?
I would say:
Spring when the ground is warm enough but before it gets too hot.
Not sure if better to do early or late fall. Start too early and the seed won't be mature enough to survive the winter. Maybe late fall and let the seed stay dormant until spring.
I have heard mid to late April is the best time, in New England anyways... I could be wrong.
Why not show the results after all the work???????
Because they assume everybody knows what grass looks like
@@milesmartinez3577 you know what they say when you assumes
Roger made a fatal flaw here. He divided the gauge setting in half. 65/2 = 32.5, which would apply roughly 0.4 lbs of seed per 1000 x 2 pass puts down 0.8 pounds of seed according to the chart. Dead wrong Roger!!
If you want to make 2 passes, you divide the poundage in half NOT the gauge setting. The correct way is 4 lbs/2 pass, which equals 2 lbs. the correct gauge setting for 2 passes would be 52 give or take.... NOT 32.5.
👏👍🍻😘
welcome to this old house.
get rid of the dog.
the end.
right, that is clearly the issue.
I got
1. Get rid of the dog
2. Get rid of the trees
3. Cut your damn lawn regularly
I got it but a new house
aguyandhiscomputer get rid of the house, keep dog 🐶
@@Idiotsincarshere get rid of the house and the humans, keep dog.
And the results?
After all that work someone's going to the shelter. 🐕.
Don't forget to look at the "chaht"
It had something to do with the amount of sheep feces lying on the top of the soil mixing with cuts on the players... Yup, chemicals are OK!
What did it look like a month later?????????????????
Understand this is old video but they could have made and uploaded the after results as well.
The comments about his accent is funny. lol
how often should this be done?
I do this in late August... pending on where you live.
may also do it in the spring, if there is a heavy snow.
How often? I would say only when your lawn is too thin to overseed by normal core aerating and seeding.
So we don't see the grass after 10 days or a month
Roger disposed of his first wife and provided nutrients to his lawn at the same time with that machine.
Ooooooh Snaaaaaapp!!:)
What was the point in having that dethacter out when you didn't even use it.
Prop. More stuff sitting around generally raises your production standards. No doubt trotted out for ratings.
4:46 any reason why they don't take the machine over the worst affected area?
thedr00 I assume they have plans for that area and don't want to waste seed.
thedr00 the owner didn't clean up the dog crap and they didn't want to get their boots dirty
U GOT TO SHOW THE AFTER . IS BETTER FOR ALL OF US
And since you didn’t de thatch it, that layer of dead grass is going to settle and choke out the new grass.
Wagner paintcrewrepair
Much easier way is to get a load of dirt and level it out , then seed and lightly rake the seed in the dirt and use straw and water it everyday for the first 10 days then every other day .
take uh look up eeeeah, see dat uuuuge tree?
Stata fertalizah
these machine are never calibrated to drop the appropriate amount of seed according to the application chart.
Stutter fertilizer 😟
I would have dethatched before seeding. All that dead grass needs to be removed no matter what .
Pounds and feet, I work in grams and meters lol, this would do my head in
google.
For what?
You can use google to quickly go from ft to meters or whatever other sort of conversion that you need.
Thanks Jesus, but not always having access to the internet this would do my head in. So used to Grams and Meters
use your phone
I worked for the scotts company many years. Dogs can be a problem. You want mainly a rye grass variety as it takes alot of abuse. Slice seeding works but theres alot in your choice of seed. Biy sh&t and you grow SH&T. spend a few bucks for your lawn and dont clip it bald.. Ive saw scotts customers doing things to their lawns that amazed me for stupidity. We had a guy we called the LAWN NAZI ( after seinfelds soup nazi) this guy was perfect and had a lawn better then the scotts president and yes ive met him several times and he was not our customer but he was smart. Me i have a nice lawn but i will say overseed and thatch removal along with aerations work wonders on a lawn.
