Been there done that. Same thing happened to the woman in another This Old House lawn care video. Made me feel a little less like an idiot as I did the same thing in front of the guy who was kind enough to drop off the rental, and his three friends ... At least I wasn't on video.
Sorry to hear that.. I just bought my first home with my wife and we watched this video for the first time and in the other videos he looked strong as an ox!
Instead of lowering the throttle of the aerator somewhere between the rabbit and the tortoise, Roger chose to leave it at full throttle for John D Homeowner, leading him to chase the machine...and we loved every minute of it!..lol
Roger, you walk like I did before I got my hip replaced which was one of the best things to ever happen to me after YEARS of pain. If that is the problem do yourself a favor and get it fixed, you will wake up free of pain and be back to normal in no time. It's not as big a deal as it used to be, I was putting up a new building in no time.Take care
The problem with seeding in spring ALONG with a pre-emergent for crabgrass is: the pre-emergent works by stopping germination, so it may not allow your grass seed to germinate depending on what pre-emergent you use.
I think Roger looks like he's doing great! Even if you can do what he loves part of the time and realize that he can help as much as he wants or as little as he wants. God bless you Rodger! Hang in there! Life's not over! Just different! -37 yo paraplegic since 30.... I try to do anything and if I find out I can't at least I tried! Wish they would have started this old house next generation a couple years ago! I've been in love with architecture the building trades and construction since I was a small boy. I have degrees in project manager / construction manager and CAD drafting and design. . watched you all my whole life!!!
Would love to see a complete lawn rejuvenation: rolling/flattening, aerating, thatching, comparing, seeding, absolutely everything to turn a terrible lawn into a golf course putting green.
Hope Roger is okay! it looks like his back has been acting up and he possibly has some health concerns! Glad he isn't doing all of the work he use to anymore!
Chris, that really doesn't apply to all, some maybe. If he has degenerative or ruptured discs, back issues, etc you can eat all the fruit, vegetables you can and it wouldn't cure it. Also, how do you determine the advise from your doctor is bad ?
Just do the exact same thing. My neighbor follows a Scott's program and the lawn grows crazy thick but is really expensive. I think doing what he did plus the crabgrass preventive he recommended would be very helpful and water, water, water ! Most people don't realize how important that part is.
@@DarkRaptor99 Michigan here. I'm with you. I mow tall, use milorganite and let the rain water my lawn. I'm not paying for city water even though I have 2 water meters. It's just gonna be covered in snow in a couple months.
Poor fella just ain't comfortable around the camera and you can tell the This Old House producers kind of tell them what to say and how to be polished. I'd be a wreck if I were featured on that show, too.
Looks great. Was wondering if you could answer a basic question about a lawn also. I arrive to mow my clients home and they had neglected to tell me what was in the backyard there were about three foot Sprouts of the horsetail bunches. Some of these branches are over 6 in in diameter. Because I was unaware and had other clients I chopped them down with machete and then mowed over them. But she wants these gone permanently and of course there's no grass around it And the soil is Sandy. We had a few options I didn't know if I should treat them little by little by spraying them with Roundup adding seed and continuing to mow. or just removing those bunches from the ground because they come up relatively easy and starting over with a new lawn in that area. PS this area takes up the whole Center of her backyard at least 250 to 300 square feet.
Owner: I bought this house a year ago, and they put in a septic tank- Roger: This is terrible this is crab grass! So aggressive, let's go!!! Owner: ok...
why dont he put the seed down first? Wouldnt the compost act as a buffer to let the seed germinate? i understand when the water hits the seed it will pull it down a bit, but just seems like it makes more sense to put the seed down first.
This old house has to do an update on roger. Imo roger is a great host and porbably the most recognized. He loks verr tired in this video , nothing like his older lawn rejuvenation video from a few years ago. Hope hes doing better.
oh my god Roger! are you okay? They should do a q&a like they did about a year ago on a stream, and tell everyone if he's okay, my god, I am really scared for him
He missed a couple of things. The bluegrass needs to be watered for a whole month. You don't judge watering based on rye germination. Then the most important fertilizing time is a dormant feeding at the end of fall. Both things he needs to know now before you leave it too him. Pre emergent and selective weed control the guy can figure out come spring. Lol
I have a Sky Tech curved glass room, that is over 20 years old. it need to be taken down. We can not find how to move it. It is metal and curved glass. Please help me.
It would be awesome to see what all this work looks like the following spring. Makes me want to give this a try but that's alot of cash for something that hasn't showed a follow up video on what the ending results look like.. just food for thought, you should end these videos with the following spring results. Would just hate to put all the cash and work for the results to be minor or not work properly.
I lived in the city for a long time, and my backyards were always fenced in like the one here. I never minded having an enclosed property until now, I own a house without fencing between neighbors and man...! I was missing out. Looking at this guy's "beautiful" yard surrounded by a barrier for nobody to see is kind of sad....
Ok, just answer me this: why are the products like Scotts, so d-mn expensive? I mean, $70 for a 50lb bag of weed killer and fertilizer at the local HD?
Excuse me Scott I don't know but I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. Link in my about tab.
Yes, I think some Home Depot's have them, if not, there are rental places that most certainly do. There's at least 2 places within 5 miles of me and I'm in central CT.
Sometimes it's cheaper to hire someone to do it if you don't have a lot of rental places. If you have a lot of rental places you might get a decent price for a rental.
RIP Roger Cook, a geat landscaper and a great landscaping teacher!

A lot of times a lawn doesn’t need all of that. It all depends on existing grass/weeds, soil condition, ph level, PKN levels, etc
Learned so much from Roger. Hope he is well. Best wishes to him.

Yeah he has def. gotten much slower and moves much more gingerly. Years of bending and lifting and working hunched over will do that to ya.
The trades can tear a body apart fast.
Manual labor is hard work. He has been doing it for decade. It takes a toll on the body.
I was going to say he looks to be slowing a little.
He posted a letter on the TOH website indicating health issues and thanking fans for good wishes and support. He stayed private about the specifics.

The problem is water isn't cheap anymore if your not on a well. Not spending 200 dollars on a water bill in the summer for green grass.
