RIP Roger. Nice to see this vintage episode of a passionate Roger Cook who was an obvious expert in his field. Although he deserved a longer retirement, a life well-lived. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
If I'm not mistaken, Roger actually worked on the first house in 1979, though he doesn't appear on screen. I love how un-slick these early shows were. The last 20years have increasingly become over-produced, but back in the 80's you really got the sense you were on a construction site. I miss the days I would come in from a cold afternoon of working in the yard to watch This Old House. And I definitely miss Roger Cook.
Same here. Roger always inspired us about getting a proper landscape design and got me to get outside, take care of our property by cutting, edging, and fertilizing the grass, raking the leaves, planting and pruning the plants so they grew the right way, etc. And to this day, 40-some years later, I still do, although like you, I miss looking forward to the next episode of TOH as a reward for my efforts!
Yeah everybody's working on these mega mansions and the Tru concept of TOH is lost. We follow the series from 1979 and now it's all glitz. And. Show biz. Meh
There’s so much more info in these old episodes. Now there’s background music playing almost constantly. Roger used to appear on The Victory Garden as well. Another show I miss.
Dear friends, it’s been a long time since I watched tv, had cable etc…. About 15 years without a tv. Recently I had major surgery and had to recover close to the hospital for very close monitoring. The air bnb had big tv and I watched this old house for hours and hours. Once back home, I pulled up toh on RUclips because I missed watching it so much as I’m still recovering. I discovered to my great sadness Roger had left us….i pray for your family sir and have my greatest respect!
As a young teenager I watched these episodes always waiting for Roger and listening to everything he said and now as an adult I’m truly thankful for everything I learned from him.
That's what the rest of the TOH guys said about Bob after he left the show. They said he took up too much screentime. The subsequent hosts did less talking (other than to the camera/viewer) and more asking questions and listening to the experts' responses. When they were looking for a new host to replace Steve when he decided to retire after the first season of Ask This Old House had wrapped filming, they decided on Kevin because they felt he represented most of the fans of the show; ordinary folks who were interested in tackling home improvement projects but weren't sure how to get started. Kevin asks the questions that most of the people watching the show probably would have.
I think he had Parkinson’s. He seemed so down to earth. He could have been a good friend and easy to talk to. A good guy who has been missed from the show and will be missed by all now.
Its no wonder he got asked back to the show sevral times, there he is with the landscape architect and Bob Vila not too long after that you didn't see them on the show anymore but Roger was telling you the direction the show took after Bob vela left it. Bob ran around and talked over the workers, but the real point of the show was to talk about what and how things were done. That wasn't Vilas style. Even when he went to do his own show he did this and kept that style of show. Its my oppion the shows current host is the best of all that have in the past ecpr maybe Norm becuse if I remember norm did a few shows as host. You've got to wonder did Roger get sick from using Round up all thoses years? And is that why his wife got sick? Chances are pretty good Roger would come home with it on his clothing and she picked it up off his clothing washing them. If Round up even caused illnesses as found in a court of law. Its a thought Roger wanted to keep his health private. Is this episode you could tell he wasnt afraid of the camera. And he wanted to teach his craft if Bob and the other guys would just shut up and let him talk.
SO AGREE. Villa was a humorless stiff. Steve's natural warmth brought everyone's personality out, in my book he doesn't get enough credit for the show's success.
@@hd-xc2lz Roku has a subscription that has all of the TOH seasons ( at least most ). It’s worth it for the nostalgia. Bob made it all about him, and Steve made it all about learning different techniques. I remember him just flabbergasted when he learned what a pilaster was during the post and beam house. That was the first season that I got fully invested in TOH. My Saturday mornings consisted of New Yankee Workshop, then TOH, and finally Hometime. I can’t imagine what the show will be once Tommy, Richard, Norm, and Kevin retire.
Lol you have to give Vila props for being the paver of the 3 hosts but I prefer Kevin any day. Villa talks too fast, moves too fast and interrupts. Roger hasn’t aged much either.
Bob Villa was always so annoying. Best move TOH ever did was replacing him. Loved the premise of the show but he made it hard to watch. His arrogance and mannerisms were too much.
It would be a nice tribute to Roger to revisit this property to see how those trees he hand-picked and planted are doing 36 years later. His segments on TOH were my favorites.
Roger was wearing his company hoodie - K&R Landscape - started by his he and his late wife who passed away in 2010. She was an insurance broker who invested well and made bank - hence Rogers current fortune of approx 11M. So sad that he had to leave TOH for health reasons and the last recent picture I saw of him and Jenn Nawada, he was using a cane for support! Don't know what is going on with him nor is it any of my bizz but the cane could be because he likely slipped a disc. Surely hope he gets better.
THANKS for another trip back on the TOH Time Machine! I had never even heard of a "Landscape Architect" until they showed us Tom "Prince Valiant" Wirth. How I used to look forward to every new show just to LEARN. Back then my ONLY source of DIY information was TOH and the Time Life home improvement books. HAD to look Tom up after seeing this. "God Speed" Thomas E. Wirth, September 16, 1941 - July 21, 2018. Can you find us the last episode with Tom in it?
Yeah, Tom Wirth was a great guy! We'll try and get a last appearance uploaded (as well as first appearance) at some point in the near future. Stay tuned! :)
Seems they planted some of those trees (like the crabapple) too close to the house. We've learned ourselves the problems of roots in the foundation and tree branches holding in moisture and pine needles (leaves in their case) rotting out the roof. And keeping bushes right next to the building where they'll trap moisture and support mildew growth? I'm sure those walls are rotting out now.
I'll bet today that house and all the roads pop bright every spring , thats one hell of a lot of color each spring. The roadreden grow slowly but the lilacs grow faster id like to think the yard is full of 10' wall of color if you don't belive me take a look at some of the gardens in England. Some of these plants get huge. The soil ph has to be just right if its not they die back. Also drainage needs to be perfect.
I like to believe the guy in the brown jacket is nice, but if he only knew why most folks are watching this clip...I hope he'd stfu for a minute so we could listen to Roger Cook and his glorious accent
RIP TO A GREAT MAN
I planted a tree in your memory yesterday in Merrimack NH. God bless you Rogah
Tom Wirth shows exactly why TOH in the long run has been with the contractors and tradesmen.
Set it down no kidding that's why I wheeled it over here
No seat belt, hmmm
What, you think he was driving that truck any further than from the back side of the house?

Just got the very sad news.

Roger is a beast. He's dropping knowledge while working and looking out for the other guys all at the same time lol

We will never know
That’s why I like Kevin O’Connor much better

Everyone loved this show from day One😅 I would love to see a review of these old projects, and how they are faring 40 years later😅
Rest in peace Rodger and thank you for everything I learned from you❤
Imagine that, supervision! An architect who knows his stuff and Roger's quality crews all working together.
The dynamic duo I only wish could come to my house and fix up my landscaping.
Roger looks so young, such a good guy.

Rip roger cook❤
His first appearance seems much more sure-footed than either Silva’s or Trethewy’s.
Glad to see they hired Man at Arms as the landscape architect
He took time out of a busy schedule at castle greyskull to shoot this segment, have some respect....
TOH, more Roger Cook vids please.
The woots on this tree will spread sidewads, Bawb.
Start that *sawr* up and cut this *timbah*
And then, we'll backfill the trench and give the customers a nice sized *yaaahd*
Lemme tell ya somethin chief, you's somethin' wicked smaht!
Someone like Roger with his accent, is a real person, he is not feigning that, a real person.
Just watched the one where Roger signed off from the show. Hope his health is better. Always loved him.
Let's see the 2021 TOH crew pull off the 7 minute landscaping one-shot. Talk about keeping costs down.
The architect keeps tripping everywhere.
Kind of sad seeing this, since roger isn’t doing so well the last time we saw him.
Bob Vila always made it about himself. I was happy to see Steve come in after Bob got the boot

Not a fan of Steve Thomas. Vila was much better IMO.

All I hear is Kind Words from the 80's "watch your self" Great collections.
I like how they try to make it seem like Bob just showed up and started talking.
yeah, he had to drive that pickup truck all the way around one corner of the house, after getting out of his fat-ass Mercedes hidden behind the house.

1988 the good ol days , that's also when I started watching This Old House
I’ll say it again. Bob was a jerk.
“That walkway is dirty!”
I’m not put off by his leading questions that the guys probably told him to ask.
I really miss the old theme song, now we have phony walked buys that don’t mean anything and everything is staged.
Seems like Tom Wirth was the star, I wonder what the process was that Rodger got the gig...
Tom Wirth might be a wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man in disguise 🙋♂️
I was thinking that too!
