The design and craftsmanship from 1987 would still be desirable in 2020 and beyond. You can say what you want about Bob Vila but that craftsman on that show were equivalent to an Olympic Dream Team in so many ways. Everyone of them is a legend in home building, remodeling, finish carpentry, design, mechanical, decorating and finish landscaping. They made craftsman a wonderful career choice and inspirational to many DIY’rs such as myself and other family members who were glued to each and every episode. So much so when working we spoke with a Boston accent to sound like Norm and Tom. 🤣🤣🤣

A home improvement show was on their list for the following season and Norm was hired. It's unclear if the show was already in production or if Bob was already cast as the lead roll as they were both in the first season. More on this WIKI page. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norm_Abram

Not wanting to say the wrong thing he talks so little compared to today when he goes on about the different techniques he has learned since this was recorded. Really shows how he was just like the workers he showcases today. Great clip.

I can totally see one of those obnoxious HDTV couples walking in, considering buying the place. She's blonde and named Alexis, and she can't possibly live with that horrible dated kitchen, because she wants to entertain ALL of her friends, even thought in reality her cooking skills don't extend beyond Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, and is insulted that the real estate agent would waste their time by showing them such an obvious trash heap of a house. Meanwhile the guy, Justin (little does Alexis know that he's cheating on her and they'll be divorced in 6 months) is off camera in the corner rolling his eyes, but for the sake of the show, he pipes up in slightly emasculated fashion that he can easily rip out the awful cabinets and install new ones for her, even though he's unable to discern the difference between a screwdriver and a crescent wrench.

That kitchen looks great and was almost 35 years ago. Goes to show you can never go wrong with a classic look.

Indeed. Today everybody seems to want a white kitchen, similar to the trendy late 80's. At least this time the cabinets are wood and not formica. This kitchen had a beautiful and intricate high ceiling which opened it up very nicely and helped it age well, I also liked that even back then now 35 years ago, they painted the fireplace area a different color to set it off from the dark wood 👍🏽

Would be interesting to see if this kitchen still exists today or some other homeowner has replaced it!

Cabinets are classic. Paint the walls, new countertop/floor and good to go.

The show featured the tradesmen. Tom, Norm ECT. Bob had no talent building with the exception of camera time as a host, yet acted as if he knew everything. The tradesmen, great guys. Bob? A hack.

He tried to bypass building codes, sold advertising on a public broadcasting show, took gifts from sponsors for product placement (sometimes called bribes or kickbacks), a real upstanding fella!
