I have a video request: a compilation by season, with the best steps you've taken, by week, with links, using old videos. Start with autumn. I'm not a video editor, so this may be a huge request. If so, ignore. But it'd be nice to have "1st week of September, I did this. 2nd week of September, I did that." You turned that lawn around from a couple of years ago.
The sun Joe is economical and really brings out a lot. Saves me a lot of work. I never use the catcher with it. But do go over lawn with that catcher because it would fill up too fast on the sun Joe and would have to stop too often. Just like you have shown. This came up Sept 20, 2024 trying to do a full renovation but just did this three weeks ago for overseeding. Your lawn looks so lovely green. Sorry about the tree😢

The tree is gone!!! Wow almost looks like a different yard and I swear that sunjoe is a sleeper every time u pull that thing out I’m amazed at how much thatch you’re able to pull but I’m tuned in.
Yup the tree is history 🙌🏾🙌🏾. The sunjoe does a great job of pulling out thatch. Its great to use it at the beginning or end of season to remove all that dead material to help the lawn breathe better. Thank you for watching.
I have the same machine. It’s great. I usually do this before reseeding and scalp down short before dethatching. It’s a ton of work! Fills up the green waste bin 4x over.
I did this for the first time this year with the Sunjoe. The bag on that thing is useless, but going without it is a little tough because of the thatch getting caught underneath. When I used a bungie cord to keep the flap open it worked much better! Less work for the Sunjoe too.

Good video, thanks for sharing. I am just curious, did you throw the seed on top of the soil and it germinated? I thought it's necessary to cover the seed in a thin layer of soil. What do you think?
No need to cover it after dethatching because the dethatcher will dig small groves in the soil. Once you lay your seed down and start watering deep the seed will settle into the grooves and start germinating
Like your Chanel Sir. I'm new here and plan on sticking around. I live in Canada, South Western Ontario. " London Ontario area " and have 6,000 Sq feet. Perennial rye.
Great advice and application as always. I’ll be doing my overseeding this weekend but not sure if I should use the detacher or the scarifier? My front yard is nice n thick while the back is thin.
I usually do both for overseeding starting with the dethatcher. The scarifier's cuts seems to make some nice beds for seeds to land in and I can go lower. Last year I did the dethatcher in one direction and the scarifier in the other, it worked out nice.
I picked up a sunjoe a couple years ago and it's definitely a "game changer"! I was shocked by all the crap it pulled up from the soil. This video arrived right on time. I was contemplating doing this, both detaching and seeding, to my lawn next week.
Lawn looks really good. I just bought seed today at the local sod farm and will be doing this same process. I'm an old man and I have about 13K sq. ft. so it's a workout. 😁 I did this last year and had great results. What rate did you apply the seed at ?
Question I just got a sunjoe and getting ready to do this process so no need to put a top soil. To keep birds eating the seeds. New to lawn and that just what I was told before also with the sun Joe do you just use the wire wheel or blade wheel
I don't put any top soil down but I use to put some peat moss down to cover the seed and help the existing soil out but as of late I just put the seed down and I don't worry about the birds too much they will eat some seed but I usually put down a little more because I know the birds will eat some. You could also buy a statue owl and place it in the yard and they'll keep the birds away also. Yea I only use the wire wheel.
It's 100+ degrees, but should be back to the 80s in a day or so. Just a reminder that summer is still here. I will hopefully do this early September. Btw, the tree is gone and it's sunny back there. 😅
I have a yard with 2 bare spots. How do I fill up the bare spots and can I put soil down for the bare spots and add seeds. Do you have any recommendations for a person who doesn’t do lawn work but willing to learn?
You can break up the bare spots to loosen up the current soil add a little bit of new soil, then add seeds and lightly rake them into the soil. Then water for the next 2 weeks
You can dethatch and then aerate. I've done both in the past. But the pros say its not necessary to do both because when aerating you're breaking up the thatch layer. But I liked the results when I did both
Your lawn looks solid. I recently seeded out some dead areas with a mixed seed and it must have tall fescue in the mix. I don't love the look personally but didn't know what the actual grass was. I like the thinner bladed grass. @@LawnAmateur
I live up here in the Pacific Northwest. I think it is too early to overseed with pernial rye now and I will probably wait until later in September, closer to our rainy season. I am unsure about just overseeing without putting down some peat moss over the top? Any guidence on this? Thanks!
I use to feel the same about seeding and applying peat moss. I still do apply it when I seed occasionally but you can seed without it and get good results also.
Did you keep at 2.5 for the overseeding? I wanted to scalp mine at 1.5 but if I don't have to then no need. I just thought 2.5 will grow back quickly before the seeds get a chance the germinate
I don't go any further than 2.5 on the fescue because I fear if the temperature spike up the fescue will burn so I stay at 2.5 but I never had any problems with germination doing it this way.

Tall fescue does not tend to accumulate thatch. The scarifier attachment could be used as a true dethatcher (i.e., removing a true thatch layer (not just lawn debris) for those grasses that do tend to accumulate thatch or it could be used as a verticutter, which can be beneficial for rhizomatous or stoloniferous grasses. For tall fescue, after power raking with the tines attachment, I would use the scarifier attachment to dig grooves in the soil to improve the seed-to-soil contact for the overseeding.
