Gran Turismo 2 - The Cut Cars We Never Saw

  • This video showcases a series of cars which were planned to appear in Gran Turismo 2, but sadly, never made it into the game.
In fact, these cars were barely started at all. Most of them only appear as text strings on the demos, while some had logos created for them as well.
I need to give a big thanks to Submaniac93 and SuperFrizzio, who massively helped out with this video, by providing information, codes, photos, and more.
Information about these cars was sourced from various places, including The Cutting Room Floor. It's an awesome site that catalogues various beta features, glitches, bugs etc. on multiple games, including Gran Turismo!
The images of the real-life cars were sourced from various places again. If I've accidentally used a copyrighted image, and you're the copyright holder, don't hesitate to get in touch with me and we can work it out.

Coming back to this video nearly 3 years later and I cannot believe we're going to be getting MANY of these text-string/early cut demo cars to drive as originally intended in the upcoming Project A-Spec mod of Gran Turismo 2 like the Renault Sport Spider and its race car variants COMPLETE with visible interiors, the JLOC Diablo, the FINA and SOK McLaren F1 race cars, the C-Class Touring Car/DTM '95, the STP Taisan Porsche RSR '99 as I saw in a screenshot of it's model, and even the Ferrari F355 among so many other cut and non-GT2 intended cars!

I remember seeing the Escort 1.8 GTI on the demo disc was a shame it didn’t make the final game. I had a 1.8 Si in real life. The fact they also planned the RS2000 Mk2 Escort shows they knew us Europeans love for fords. I really wish by now in the GT series we would have the following and I’d really love a really large choice of cars in GT7. Cars we need are Escort RS Turbo Series 1 and 2, and if spoiling us the XR3 and XR3i. Fiesta we would need Mk2 XR2, they actually showed this model in the museum section of GT5. Perhaps the RS Turbo too. A Sierra RS Cosworth and XR4X4 2.9 would be a great nod to the 80’s early 90’s. With how popular Fords of this era were it would be awesome to have XR’s and RS’s Fiesta and Escorts in game. If anyone knows KAZ have a word with him👍

In real life there was only ever a '98 road version of the GT-One that's because it was a requirement of the regulations of Le mans in 1998 because it was competing in the GT1 category however the GT1 category was upgraded to GTP in 1999 because the cars that raced in that Category were more akin to prototypes than true GT cars so although there was a racing version of the '99 Toyota GT-One race car which was quicker still than the '98 version no road version was required this time so no road version of the '99 GT-One race car actually ever existed.

The funny part of this is that Codemasters released TOCA 1 and 2 for the PS1, but since they had the EXCLUSIVE rights to use the supertourers from the BTCC at the time (and possibly the rights to use the Renault Spyders as they were a support series to the BTCC at the time), Sony and Polyphony couldn't use them. The same can be said of ATLUS, whose case is even more damning and bizarre considering that the entirety of the Persona series and some of the Shin Megami Tensei games was released on Sony hardware, but it was also because they held not just the exclusive rights to use JTCC cars in their games (via Advan Racer, also released on the PS1), they were also one of the main sponsors of the championship (note the lack of ATLUS sponsorship on the Racing Modification version of the Honda Accord, it's not a coincidence, ATLUS had to have said "no" at some point).
All in all, licencing is a hornet's nest of incomprehensible nonsense and contradictions. And it was actually worse then than it is today.

Fantastic work overall between you and the other two. I honestly thought you presented the scrapped cars well enough and gave a better explanation of them than I would've done.
With that said, I do have some things to say on some of these scrapped cars. Starting with the BMW 3-Series, the scrapped ones are actually e36s. Which were the generation before the actual 3-Series in the final game. I also think the RMs for those possibly could've been based on other real-life BTCC liveries like other RMs in GT2 were. Man though, scrapping that e36 was a missed opportunity. PD could've altered the model and made it into an e36 M3 instead.
A thing to note about the CLK-GTR in GT4, it's actually the CLK-LM, not the GTR. (CLK LM has a v8 while the GTR has a V12). The CLK-GTR is also in NFS:HP2, MC3 Dub Edition, multiple Forza games, and in PGR4 to note. The CLK-LM I believe also appeared in Forza Motorsport 1 and is in both Project Cars 1 & 2. Finally for Rufs, another livery that one of Ruf RMs could've been was the Ruf CTR2 Pikes Peak car that was out at that time. I do think it's more likely that the Ruf RMs would've been based on Porsche 911 JGTC cars since PD originally planned to add those to GT2, but I just wanted to mention the Pikes Peak car for the heck of it.

Gran Turismo never actually featured CLK GTR, "technically".
The models for GT4, 5 and 6 are CLK LM. Even in GT5, the Dev realised and changed the name from CLK GTR to CLK LM.

I found out that the price car for the S license in GT2 is the Toyota GTOne '99 Race Car with the Esso logos. The surprise is that I have the ntsc-u/c version of GT2. When I saw that, I was shocked that PD forgot to change it before release.

    Just a note over 15:09
That 323i Coupe body its a E36 model (as the name suggests). Its the 1990 Series 3 model.
On GT2, the series 3 that we have is the E46 model, released on 1998.
Maybe its a little hard to notice difference on PS1 graphics, but its very cool to see how the model would look like.

The change from Esso to Exxon in the North American version was for legal rather than licensing reasons. As it is an obvious reference to Standard Oil, the 'Esso' name cannot be used in states where the rights to the 'Standard' name are owned by Chevron or BP.

It's crazy when you really look at it, most "Racing Modifications" in the older games were used as workarounds for licensing issues, which is why I believe why it took so long to return in GT5. It's interesting but disappointing at the same time.

I think it's more than likely that by "Escort RS2000" Polyphony meant the Mk V Escort RS2000, and the reference to the other gen is just a coincidence. The Golf Cabrio would probably have it's roof up, also I suppose that's why no-roof-at-all the cars like Elise Trofeo and Renault Sport Spider were cut. New Beetle 1.9 would be another TDI car included in the game. English wiki page for Zonda seems to have a mistake, stating that the C12 had 444hp, while most other sources state a value closer to 400. You also seemed to mistake both BMW E46s present in the game as E36s. Well made and interesting video, must have took a lot of work.

As good as GT2 was imagine if they had more time to develop it, it would had been amazing. Always thought the GT2 carlist was weird, for example, 323ti but no M3? shame they didn't put the Escort mk1, that's one of my fav cars, although the 1600 is a better car, by the way, there was no polo G40 mk1, just mk2 phase 1 (the red one you put) and mk2 phase 2 (the black one you put), great work!!

Racing modification Renault Sport Spider...could be those one-make similar to Clio V6, but there is a chance of possibility for Sifo Renault Sport Spider JGTC in 1997.
XJR15 would more likely be the one with bigger rear wing/super rare XJR15-LM, as the winged one similar to the car known as study car for Japan's Tokai University.
GTHD did have released in Hong Kong and perhaps, Taiwan with Traditional Chinese. I remembered trying out in Sony Showroom in Hong Kong, which unfortunately gone was the premium interior GC Impreza WRC.
Tsuchiya MR2 was in blue full season in 1997 JGTC.

Though this reply came a while later & would still interest some, possibly early next year an update to the GT2+ mod will come out, that has a few more cut cars restored. Like the E36 3-Series, becoming the 323i Coupe, as well as the A4 Avant along with other ones that have been cut & restored in that same mod. Though ones that only have their names & logos won't be, as there was nothing made in the first place for some of them, even in earlier versions. Things like the C55, and those RUF's will be coming through, as they aren't much different to the models in-game, which have been used to restore them. But in the end, some of these have been brought through. Not all, but still quite a nice amount.

The TVR Tuscan did appear in GT3 and GT4.
Though they stopped with the racing modifications in those games, which is kind of sad. It would have been nice to make racecars yourself, like you could in the older games.
This feature however is present in the Forza Motorsport and Horizon series on Microsoft's platform. There you can apply widebody-kits and spoilers to turn a normal car into a proper racing machine, as well as giving them pretty much any livery you want.
Speaking of the Beetle 1.9 - This would likely also been a diesel powered variant, as VW did not have any 1.9 liter gasoline engines.
The 1.9 TDI is by far VW's most successful engine, and the longest lasting engines made by the company. First appearing in 1994 Golf and Passat models, this early version had 90 horsepower, but it was later increased to 110 HP. The formula was simple; by taking the 2.5 TDI that Audi made, taking away one cylinder and fitting a smaller turbocharger to make the most possible torque at low revs. The engine later got an upgrade with a cylinder head that had individual fuel pumps in the injectors themselves. This variant had the PD denomination, where PD stands for "Pumpe Düse" or "Pump injector". This iteration of the 1.9 was very troubled in the beginning, but it got refined and made extremely durable in 2001. Power outputs ranged from 115 HP to 131 HP, where a 150 HP model were available (most likely used in the Golf GTD), and SEAT had one that produced 160 HP for their Ibiza Sport model.
The one used in the New Beetle was likely the 110 HP variant.

What do you mean by 'texturings'? I haven't heard the word used like that elsewhere, and I've spent most of my life in game modification/3D art circles - though admittedly never for Gran Turismo, despite playing it to death, so I could have missed a community-wide misnomer (kind of like how hackers are called 'modders' in GTA Online, which dirties the word modder elsewhere... oops, tangent!)
But yeah, textures are like the 'paint' on a model, it doesn't really mean anything else within games/3D. Do you mean it like 'placeholder', or 'it's only in the game by name'? :P
