"The bone rattling bass of Mel Schacher, the competent drumming of Don Brewer, and the shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner" or something close to that. In this video, I can barely her the bass, and can't understand a word being sung. The drumming is pretty good, and Schenker is shirtless. It was the best I could come up with at the time.

I was 10 or 11 when this was on TV. It came on right after Midnight Special. I used to get to see it because my mom was out dancing at a Night Club or what we called a "Discotheque" in the 70s and early 80s. Young people have no idea how fun it was getting together for a great concert or even showing up at the night club at midnight and dancing till 3:00am when the lights would kick on and it was last chance at romance time. But I digress. Anywho, I don't remember every band I saw on DKRC but I definitely remember the this. Michael Schenker is most underrated and should be mentioned more when talking about the great rock guitarists of all time. This is F-K-N great, thankyou whoever put this on here for us to see.
I won 2 tickets from KQRS, the radio station in the Twin Cities. I was shocked I won because back then we had to actually dial all 10 digits on a rotory phone, but I won and we went. It was at the St Paul Civic Center Theatre and the guest band was Mott the Hoople. Amazing show, but yes, I seen UFO in 77 with Mott the Hoople. I will never forget it. All the Young Dudes and Lights Out were my two favorite songs of the whole night. Little did I know I was seeing Schenker til years later. dude was a beast on lead! And as I said in another comment, I believe UFO was the beginning of hair band music with Too Hot to Handle and Lights Out!
Their live album, "Strangers in the Night" is one of the best live albums I've ever heard. My twin brother saw them in 1980. I passed on it. I shouldn't have.
Who underrates UFO? To say they are underrated suggests that many underrate them - i. e. say they suck. I've never heard anyone say they suck. Rather, many say they were a great influence. 'Underrated" is the most misused word on the Internet.

Born in 61' listening to beatles in 65' found the good stuff on a little station called KISN fm in portland, or in 69'. I remember this show...it was a tossup of watching Rock Concert, Midnight Special, or Don Kirshners Rock Concert that night. First tome I'd seen anyone play like that on guitar, great band. I had just bought Edgar Winters "Frankenstein" w/Rick Deringer great times to be a teenager.

In all fairness shirtless, levis and beer...lots of beer was THE rock uniform back in 60's and especially 70's. If you wanted TONE you needed a TUBE AMP! And they put out alot of heat particularly in summertime.

This band was so influential in what was to morph from 70's hard rock into what we know as heavy metal and the elements are already so clear in this 74 set, what with Schenker on the flying v and his masterful riffs along with the on stage energy of Pete Way and his posturing who Steve Harris from Maiden readily admits he took his cues from. Them, Lizzy and Priest were the main bands to shape the NWOBHM and the rest is history but unfortunately, U.F.O. are so overlooked in the recognition stakes.

New Wave Of British Metal circa 1979 in the U.K. Resurgence of heavy rock acts adopting the d.i.y. attitude and energy of punk and in some cases infusing rawer elements of that sound. Maiden, Saxon, Angel Witch, Def Leppard, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Praying Mantis, Raven, Diamond Head, Tank, Samson, Venom etc being the better known acts. U.F.O. was a significant influence for many. This in turn across the pond in the States with a melding of the fast tempos and in your face aggression of hardcore helped birth thrash metal.
In the World of Metal Scorpions are even more overlooked,although they had much bigger commercial success than UFO. Listen to early Scorpions and than listen to early Thrash Metal Slayer , Metallica etc. and you can hear the influence of the Scorpions.
@mamamia6925 Undoubtedly, the Scorpions were instrumental in shifting 70's heavy rock into metal and a main player in the process. 'He's A Woman, She's A Man' is often held up as an example of proto-thrash and I can clearly see why. They were massive in their day.

UFO was as Heavy as Black Sabbath were on their first 2 albums. I mean that the first 2 UFO albums were every bit as Heavy as their peers in Dust , Sir Lord Baltimore, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Grand Funk Railroad, Budgie, Eloy, and Deep Purple were doing at the time. Jerusalem, Bang , Judas Priest didn't exist yet

In the World of Metal Scorpions are even more overlooked,although they had much bigger commercial success than UFO. Listen to early Scorpions and than listen to early Thrash Metal Slayer , Metallica etc. and you can hear the influence of the Scorpions.

Undoubtedly, the Scorpions were instrumental in shifting 70's heavy rock into metal and a main player in the process. 'He's A Woman, She's A Man' is often held up as an example of proto-thrash and I can clearly see why. They were massive in their day.

UFO was as Heavy as Black Sabbath were on their first 2 albums. I mean that the first 2 UFO albums were every bit as Heavy as their peers in Dust , Sir Lord Baltimore, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Grand Funk Railroad, Budgie, Eloy, and Deep Purple were doing at the time. Jerusalem, Bang , Judas Priest didn't exist yet
You can see the influence Mogg and Way had on Di Anno and Harris. Not so much from Schenker to Murray....other than the hair .
