There's this theory I saw somewhere that I actually love.
So you know how Trelawny predicts the death of a student each year? And then everybody thinks she's a fraud because none of them have died yet?
Well, what if all of them die in the battle of hogwarts?
And yes, she probably didnt predict *all* of the people that die in the battle, but it would make sense that she would see some of them dying.
She even says Harry will die, which he does. (I know he doesn't stay dead, but he does die)
Also, a lot of Ron's predictions come true too. Some examples:
On one of their first divination lessons, Ron's looks at Harry's tea leaves and sees a bowler hat and suggests that maybe he will end up working at the ministry of magic. Then he says the hat looks kind of like an acorn, which means unexpected gold. Harry does end up working at the ministry ( he later becomes an auror), and the unexpected gold could be referring to his winnings at the triwizard tournament.
In the second book, so before they even start divination, harry, ron, and hermione are trying to figure out why Tom Riddle got a special services award or whatever it called. Ron jokingly says "or maybe he killed moaning myrtle, would have done everyone a favour"
    Which he did.

He also sees a acorn witch the Unfogging The Future says means unexpected gold. Both of those thing come true bc Harry becomes a aruor and he wins gold after the triwizard tornoment and he wasn’t expecting to win. It’s just a thought.

Great video, I think Half-Blood Prince is supposed to be the book where we finally understand her capacity. The chapter title is definitely the final and most obvious clue.
I think Dumbledore's also keeping her safe. Not only is she at risk of exploitation by dark wizards, but she's clearly a danger to herself. She's antisocial, prone to substance abuse, plagued by visions she can't interpret. It's a recipe for self-destruction if she were living alone. Dumbledore is many things, but he's above all compassionate and I think that's the #1 reason she's kept around. Her utility to him is a bonus and also justifies her teaching career, even if she's a bit too dumb to interpret her visions.
As a fun sidebar, she asks Neville to pick a blue one on his second one because he breaks the second cup as well. It's not mentioned what colour he picked first, but she definitely foresaw not one, but TWO broken teacups.

Speaking of which I noticed some fun "predictions"
When Harry and Ron try to make up some miserable predictions to impress their Professor, they inadvertently foretell the dangers Harry will face throughout the three tasks of the Tri Wizard Tournament. In the first task, he’s “in danger of burns” from the dragon. He will later “lose a treasured possession” for the second task (Ron, who thinks he’ll drown, and ends up not breathing underwater). Finally, Harry is “stabbed in the back” by someone he thought was a friend (Mad Eye Moody/Barty Crouch Jr.) before coming off “worse in a fight” (his duel with Voldemort).

Sirius breaking into the castle actually happened on Halloween, it was kind of a big deal because they were all at the feast which, as Ron said, was very lucky because none of them were in the Gryffindor common room, he said Sirius must have lost track of time or he'd have come into the great hall to find Harry. (Although he probably knew it was Halloween and that's why he chose that night, so that he could get Peter while nobody was around.) I only know this because I literally just re-read that scene for what must be the seventh time because the prisoner of Azkaban is my favourite.
But anyway who wouldn't be dreading hearing that their baby rabbit died? It was so young and had so much to live for. If I had to be away from my pet for a year (if I had one) I would dread hearing news of its death.

@LN Or at least, that's what Trelawney says. :) But the fact that they have standardized tests (which is what the OWLs are) for divination, indicates that there is, in fact, a way to divine (at least, using tools like crystal balls and tea leaves) that can be taught; Trelawney just wasn't able to teach them properly.

    • @Katerine459
      @Katerine459 4 года назад +5

@LN All true. :) But I think an exception can be made for divining through the use of crystal balls or tea leaves. In the case of the former, a crystal ball is a magical device, like a Pensieve is a magical device, and it doesn't take any special ability (beyond being magical) to use a Pensieve. And I think I remember there being a reference to a textbook for Divination that covers rules for how to read tea leaves.

      GET INSPIRED: ruclips.net/video/8gHwP0UgaDA/видео.html
Seriously, i have something to say, so Listen!
We, as a community, need to Tweet towards J.K.Rowling
that she should allow the Copyright for Harry Potter
      to be losened a bit.
Cause we need some Sort of Reboot,
as almost all books are Lost in Adaptation.
      The movies just do not represent the franchise right;
evidend by Dobby alone. If you know what i mean...
And even if we wouldnt need a reboot,
the creativity of the fans is still limited too much,
if you get what i mean!
Like it is, no one can give us what we need and/or want:
A lot people want a Series about the 4 Founders!
A lot understand how lost in Adaptation all the books
are and want all the Movies remade, maybe as a Cartoon,
      maybe not.
And lastly, a lot of people love the idea
      of a ‚All generation at once’-Cartoon, as
the AMV above shows. Isnt it epic?
These 3 things should ALL come to fruition,
in my opinion. Not to mention at least 1!!
Currently, the franchise is limited too much.
...Fans should be allowed to make Animations
about Hogwarts and all ist generations and
      Magical secrets.
If you agree the creativity is restrained too harshly,
tweet to Rowling! And also discuss!
And yeah, i know Rowling gets Tweets about a
whole other subject nowadays, but lets
get away from that for a second, to help
      the Harry Potter Franchise, ok?!

4:55 Fun fact about that date: The 16th of October is actually the date of J.K. Rowling and her first husband’s wedding. The reason it’s says it’s a day she dreads is because her husband has admitted to being abusive and even kicking her out of the house without their daughter, Jessica. It was at that point she had enough, filed for a divorce and took their daughter with her to England where she was barely able to keep their heads above water as they were very poor (she was still writing the first book at the time.)

It's so difficult and exhausting physcially and emotionally, to have to look after small energetic children when your body is not that young anymore, when it wants to rest. Imagine looking after a child when you're 70, 80 or even 90. Yet they get up every day and they do it, because the orphanage system is not good where I live at all and few people want to adopt an older child. And because they love their grandchildren very much even though they can't give them as many material things as working parents in their prime. Neville's gran is a hero in my book even if she makes mistakes and is too harsh sometimes. Could be a generational thing as well.

@Charlotte Stringer cassandra was not cursed in the first place . If you have done a background research of Cassandra you must know that she first appeared in this book called cypria ( a book that deals with the cause of trojan war) this book is lost but has fragmented pieces put together. The remaining pieces says that cassandra and her brother both were left in the temple of apollo where two snakes licked their ears causing them to foretell the future . when paris goes to sparta to fetch helen both Cassandra and her brother foretells what was about to happen that is the destruction of the troy later on she appears in illiad in this book too she is not mentioned to be cursed . The whole Cassandra was cursed story was written by aeschylus in which cassandra promised to apollo to make love to him if he gives her the power of prophecy she agreed but upon getting the gift she refused and got her prophetic power back now , cypria and illiad two books that first mentions her were written around 7Bc while aeschylus wrote his story , agamemnon in 4BC (300) years after them . So aeschylus made the curse part for drama as he is a tragidian . Cassandra wasn't cursed nor mad and Apollo didn't curse her

I mean, I always saw her as being good at prophecy but bad at interpretation and also really weird; is the prevailing view not that both she and Luna were unjustly dismissed while right? But seriously, I figure this must be common with prophets and diviners. If it didn't work, the art wouldn't be respected by centaurs and taught at Hogwarts; if it was actually clear enough that it was obvious who was good and who was a quack, anyone able to teach it there would also be respected. Trelawney's very position indicates that many diviners are good, many are useless, and it isn't at all clear which is which.

Due to the lack of seers in wizarding society, and the skipping of generations, Trelawney has never learned how to interpret what she sees. She is clearly knowledgeable of her subject, and was a former Ravenclaw. It is interesting! Perhaps the imprecise nature of the subject relates to more than what is said. I always liked her. Her class reminded me of those teachers in school that didn't have anything in their life in order and couldn't teach you anything ... but that you still liked and enjoyed their classes in a weird way.
It's interesting to hear about how she could have been right xD

also (at least in the movie) in the 3rd film during the tea leaf reading when Ron gives his prediction about Harry, he says (something along the lines of) 'you're going to suffer but you'll be happy about it' and this ends up true as well. In Deathly Hallows he goes to die to save them all. (theres probably other scenarios where he does something similarly sacrificial but I cant recall at the moment).

I love how Hermione vehemently denies that divination is a real discipline, but ancient runes are fascinating, when studying runes IS a form of divination. Just like using a pendulum, or even a magic 8 ball.

So in greek mythology there is a girl named Cassandra she is pyram and hecuba's daughter. She was cursed by Apollo to have all knowing sight, but to never be believed. Perhaps JK drew from that idea?

I thought it was Apollo but yes, she spurned his affection so he gave her the gift of prophesy as a gift, she wasn't at all pleased and continued spurning him so she was cursed so that no-one would ever believe her, she even predicted her death at Queen Clytemnestra hands and couldn't do anything about it.

Thanks for the video. I've been saying this stuff for years. Trelawney rocks. Even in the battle for Hogwarts she's hurling crystal balls at empty space to hit Death Eaters as they round corners and come into view. Also, really fast. Ron and Harry both predict everything that happens in Goblet of Fire in reverse order. Super happy with the Trelawney love.

    That was actually really great.
The fun thing is though, that not only is she incapable of interpretating her predictions, most of them are SO generic that they are of no use to anyone.
Harry being in mortal danger? Well, he's been in this school for two years and has faced death twice already, plus Voldemort in general.
Beware of the red-haired man? She's a Gryffindor, hanging around a whole bunch of Weasleys all the time. One of them could just randomly be rude to her at some point in time and it would be fullfilled.
Whether Lavender has been afraid of Sirius Black or not, she could have just lost her bracelet that day or fell down the stairs or anything.
And predicting death in general? Well, all people die at some point, so... easy :D

I always interpreted that the "dark young man who dislikes the questioner" was referring to Harry literally hiding as she was walking by. He's a dark (haired) young man, possibly troubled (always), who dislikes Trelawney. But this is for sure a more foreshadowed take on it!
