I’ve always imagined that boggarts are something really cute and not very strong, and that the appearing as what the person is scared of is just a defence mechanism.
Dementors, boggarts and poltergeists aren't animals, they're non-beings. They're creatures that don't have similar muggle relatives. They're purely magical creatures, and manifestations of emotion: dementors, despair; boggarts, fear; and poltergeists, mischievousness. Because they're purely magical, muggles cannot see non-beings. Muggles can feel the presence of boggarts, even glimpsing them, and can feel the effects of dementors, and of course experience the physical activities a poltergeist causes, like throwing stuff. Non-beings aren't alive, and so cannot be killed. The charms that affect each non-being can only repel them. To decrease their number, you have to decrease the amount of their associated emotion in an area. Dementors "grow like fungi" and survive in places of despair, and as Lupin said, "Our pain becomes their power." The more despair and upset there is, the more of them there are, and the stronger they are. You can repel them with the Patronus Charm, but that's not the only way of combatting them. In his 6th year, Harry argued with Snape in a Defence Against the Dark Arts class about the best way to combat dementors, with Harry saying it was the Patronus Charm, and Snape saying otherwise. In Deathly Hallows Part 2, Repello Inimicum, a protective enchantment cast over Hogwarts, is shown to repel dementors. www.accio-quote.org/articles/2000/1000-canadianpress-moore.htm www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/dementors-and-chocolate Boggarts are generated and sustained by fear. Boggarts prefer to hide in confined spaces, such as cupboards and underneath beds, but also take residence in woods and around shadowy corners. Jack the Ripper, a murderer from the Whitechapel district of London, was actually a boggart, and the most infamous boggart in the world. www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/boggart (The issue with this article is Rowling saying non-beings are "strange". They're not. No creature, alive or non-being, is strange. Humans aren't a baseline of life. "There are no strange creatures, only blinkered people." - Newt Scamander Likewise, poltergeists grow in places of and survive due to mischievousness. Peeves is so strong because there's been 1000 years of students and some mischievous staff at Hogwarts. That mischievousness resulted in Peeves. And I think there may be a unique aspect of poltergeists which explains why he can't be removed from the castle: unlike other non-beings who can move freely, like dementors leaving Azkaban, poltergeists are a part of where they're generated, so Peeves is a part of Hogwarts, as much as the walls, and windows, and doors, and grounds are. This is further evidenced by him acquiescing to the wishes of the teachers in regards to the purpose of a school: teaching, by staying out of classrooms during lessons. It's further corroborated by Peeves obeying Dumbledore, the head of the school, as well as being afraid of the Bloody Baron despite him posing no threat to Peeves: the Baron killed Helena Ravenclaw, daughter of Hogwarts founder Rowena Ravenclaw. Peeves is scared of the Bloody Baron because Peeves is a part of the school, and a creation is an extension, a piece of its creators, and the Baron was a danger to a founder's daughter whom, despite their estrangement, she obviously loved, and so that is manifested in him. www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/peeves Edit: I was wrong on Jack the Ripper.
I’m wondering if the original Boggart was made by Ron at the end of Chamber of Secrets? Harry and Ron were hiding in the closet in the staff room when they found out Ginny was taken. Ron was really scared. Then three months later a boggart it is found in what appears to be the same closet.
Thats a good idea. I feel that Moodys worst fear was to not being able to keep fighting evil. So his boggarts could be him being disabled enough to need to quit the aurors. Like losing both legs or other lession that makes him unable to fight
Something rly sad is that when Molly looked at the boggart she still saw Fred and George dead next to each other because even in her worst nightmares she couldn't imagine them apart That hurt bro
“Death couldn’t find the Third Brother, but Moody could see through the Cloak” Also, don’t forget, the Cloak was also not able to fool a map made by 4 rebellious teenagers, so that poses its own hilarious questions.
If I remember correctly, Dementors were created by dark wizard Ekrizdis, maybe he created the Dementors using Boggarts that he either overfed with human fear and despair (after all he was torturing muggles on his island) or purposefully created them (twisting Boggarts to serve his goals) to instill fear and despair in his victims. Maybe he didn't even consciously create the Dementors, it was rather a side-effect of his actions on the island. Anyways, I think it would tie nicely with your theory. As always, excellent work, thank you for the theory!
It's never stated that he created them, but if he did I like to imagine he may have crossbred a boggart with a lethifold. Similar to Hagrid creating the skrewts by crossbreeding a manticore with a firecrab.
I think it’s probably some type of magic performed on boggarts to turn them into Dementors in the same way inferi are reanimated corpses…. Then again, there’s probably a lot of dark creatures that we haven’t heard of yet in the wizarding world!
Rather than baby Dementors that eventually grow up to be a Dementor, Boggarts and Dementors could have been of the same magical family species. Like dogs vs. wolves. Maybe in magical evolution, the two species started to feed on slightly different things and process it in a slightly different way.
Question: when Harry hears Lily’s screams, is it actually his memory? Or, is it Voldemort’s soul shard that is remembering the event as his downfall? Seems to me more likely the latter, since Harry was a 1 year old at the time. So theory: after Voldemort’s defeat, would Harry still have the same reaction to a dementor?
Yes. I forget what book it is but they do eventually say that the scream is from Voldemorts memory. They don’t say this part but Voldemort had just been defeated by an infant and the scream is the last thing he heard when it happened. Of course it’s going to be with his fear of failing. I like to imagine that the reason Harry hears it is not just because of Voldemorts memory but also because he too was scared in that moment. Even tho Harry doesn’t remember it, it’s possibly buried deep in his subconscious.
Harry also remembers a Flying Motorcycle and a Bright Green Light. So he has rudimentary memories of that night (despite children not really having Memories until they’re two-to-three at the earliest). I’m gonna lean towards the horcrux influencing how Harry processed things that young. After it’s destroyed it’s possible that Harry only has a “memory of a memory” of the flying motorcycle memory/remembering himself drawing a flying motorcycle in primary school but can’t Recall that memory beyond “I remember doing this + I’ve ridden in this thing when I turned 17”
Interesting question. I guess it's voldemorts sould they see, and the pain of him at the last moments. Luna lost her mother too, neville has painfull memories of his parents not remembering him. However, Harry cannot see thestrals, his soul dies not remember their deaths I guess, till cedrick, but voldemort can. Why does the part of voldemorts soul does not make him see thestrals before? It enables him to talk to snakes... so many contradictions. Kind of random what rowling did there, what the horkrux inside harry can do and cannot do
@@kathzemiau7234 JK actually talks about that. Harry doesn’t even see the thestrals on the way home after the tournament because you kind of have to process the death first. Harry can see them after having marinated in what happened that night for two months. At the end of Goblet he was still a bit in denial in a “maybe this was all a dream” sort of way. Which is why he can’t see them from the beginning despite having seen his mother die.
@@Paolabear7 yeah, but voldemorts soul has seen death hundreds of times, he should give harry the ability to see them since day one, like with parsel. Speaking a language is also something beyond just the soul.
I think after GoF, Moody's boggart would be that chest he was locked in by Barty Crouch Jr. He was a powerful Auror for so long, he was so used to being at the front of the fight for the light. He believed he took every single precaution he could, and yet, he still failed to protect himself. And that kind of failure would eat at a person who is as proud as Moody is. He might start to wonder if he is as crazy and broken down as many people around him think, that maybe he has lived past his usefulness. For him, that chest would represent the possibility that he is no longer an asset, but a burden.
According to Pottermore, Moody's greatest fear if Voldemort. So I always thought what Moody saw when he looked in the drawer was an apparition of Voldemort curled up like a contortionist inside the drawer. Since he knew that (A) Voldemort couldn't access the Order's HQ, and (B) even if he could, that kind of hiding just wasn't Voldemort's style, he realized that it was most likely a boggart.
J says, "If there's any other character whose boggart is a dementor, it's Moody!" What? No way! It would obviously be Sirius (or really anyone else who's ever been in Azkaban for a significant length of time). Sirius came face to face with dementors on a regular basis for twelve years. Moody's eye sees through invisibility and through the back of his own head. Does it see through transfigurations? Maybe it can see boggarts as they are.
This just reminds me of the theory that "IT" is the story of a bunch of muggle kids fighting a boggart, that thing was too intense for what we've seen of boggarts, so maybe it was a "teen" halfway becoming a dementor? (which is why it could only be seen when it chose to)
This brings up a good potential series of videos: "What is a character's boggart fear? (And what is the Riddikulus way to defeat it?)" Similar to your Patronus videos
I always thought that the Boggart showed the ugly memory because the ugly memory is a very fundamental part of Harry's fear. That's what Harry's really afraid of, not just the Dementor itself.
This fits really well because Ron's ugly memory would have been Fred turning his teddy bear into a giant spider and Molly's could have been seeing her family dead since her brothers Gideon and Fabian Prewett died and she believed Ginny was dead in chamber of secrets.
That doesn't work with Lupin, he's not scared of the moon,he's scared of transforming and yet he doesn't transform nor does the boggart become him transforming
@@satsujin-shathewitchkingof6185 But would someone be actually afraid of the source of something they are afraid of more than what it causes? The moon is associated with the transformation so I would assume he would still be afraid of it, but due to him knowing it is boggart he is less afraid. ( I have actually never read or watched anything official involved with Harry Potter so I don’t know what actually happened when it transformed into the moon) Also feel free not to answer I just have fun making theories.
@@ThefifthBishopofGord Yes, and (1) The boggart is not actually the moon, so it can't actually transform him. (Nor can it fit in the classroom.) and (2) Lupin maintains his presence of mind and immediately casts the Ridikulus charm, to change the boggart into a white balloon, which does not cause werewolf transformations. Such transformations take a little time, it's not just >blink< and the go from human to werewolf.
@@satsujin-shathewitchkingof6185 Works fine, it's like trigger words. People associate events and concepts with their fear. In his case the moon would trigger his deeper fear, so he fears the sight of that as much as transforming. Besides he would never see himself transform, except for reflections. I doubt it would benefit the boggard to transform into a mirror he might break, rather then crumble in fear.
In the maze in part 4, the boggart as dementor slips on his robe, so i guess they could not kiss. I lean towords they pretend the powers of they objects they turn to, but do not possess them. Or they do exactly what the victim fears. Hary fears the fealing of the demenor, so he feels it, even though it might not be real, just in his head. I guess he does not fear a kiss, just the presence of a dementor. So the boggart would not kiss. The snape boggart of neville could not do real magic I guess...
Wait, when Neville steps in front of the wardrobe with the boggart inside, it steps out as Snape and not as it transforms. So, it must be able to know who is in front before they are seen
I would need to check if this is also the case in the book (the book is on a higher level of canonicity), but if it is than yeah you are completely correct
Yes in the book also Snape steps out. It goes like this - " A jet of sparks shot from the end of Professor Lupin's wand and hit the doorknob. The wardrobe burst open. Hook-nosed and menacing, Professor Snape stepped out, his eyes flashing at Neville." So it means boggarts can see who is facing them from inside of cupboards or wardrobes. And probably Moody saw what his worst fear was in the cupboard and recognised the boggart.
Raises the question if they can see through Harry's cloak, and if so, is a valuable way of detecting invisible wizards if one can only put up with seeing their worst fear for long enough.
I have a theory that boggarts and dementors are actually obscurials disconnected from their magic folk. They feed on fear and/or despair which is what creates obscurials and they all have a similar shadowy appearance (boggarts have it whilst transforming). I think obscurials that were primarily born from fear become boggarts, and the ones primarily born from despair become dementors. I thought maybe lethifolds would be the ones born out of rage, but idk
10:40 No, he's just the first CONFIRMED case of an Azkaban break-out. Barty Crouch Jr's breakout predates Sirius's, although it didn't become known until years later.
He had help Sirius escaped without help he grew skinny and used his animagus form to escape while... Barty Crouch senior Barty crouch junior's father helped him get out but not willingly because he was the one who put him in Azkaban Prison in the first place but he only did it because the mother of Barty Crouch junior was so depressed and sad that she wanted to go take the place in Azkaban for her son
The way I've seen it is that Barty Jr's "breakout" doesn't count as a "breakout", it's more of an...illegal release. We know people *can* be released from Azkaban (if not, Dumbledore wouldn't have wasted time trying to get Morfin released...whenever he actually did that 😅)
I always felt that dementors were the spawn of the evil experiments Ekrizdis did on the sailors he caught and tortured with dark magic. Those captured souls became the first dementors and they multiplied on the suffering of his victims…then the misery prisoners after.
Does lupin know this? Because after Harry passes out he says “that was a boggart, if it were a real dementor, it would’ve been much worse” so it CANT replicate the same powers. The obvious counter argument being “it’s a lesser form, therefore it’s not as strong” to which I reply, dementors can’t shapeshift, which would be advantageous as a more powerful being. They even out on the power scale.
Sometimes you trade things off, adults are physically more powerful than children but their minds have trouble adapting to new things,it's a similar situation here
@@reubenoakley8967 I would agree with this, if they are the same creature it’s likely their ability to manipulate perception is an enhanced version of what their shape shifting was, enhanced so far to the point that it really doesn’t need to shape shift
Fun fact: You know that in some creatures that go under a metamorphosis that the adults are only used for the purpose of mating. This could possibly be what is happening here to a lesser extent as a dementor is still frightening which makes boggarts but can’t change appearance because they didn’t need to cause fear. Of course this something I come up on the spot so this probably makes zero sense grammar or lore wise.
I think it makes total sense that Moody’s boggart is a Dementor. He very obviously has PTSD (“CONSTANT VIGILANCE”), and someone with PTSD’s greatest fear would definitely be the creature that forces you to feel unsafe and relive your worst memories. Not only that, but the other character that we see that likely has PTSD is Harry (In book 5, he has constant nightmares, is easily agitated, and is often mentioned pulling his wand out “on instinct” showing that he’s always alert of danger). Harry is the only other character we know to have his boggart be a Dementor.
So.. What happens when you use Avada Kedavra on a Dementor? Could a Dementor pass through the veil? What would happen to it? What would happen to the veil?
@@obi501 I would guess nothing happens and the unspeakables get really annoyed that Dementors are too lazy to take the few seconds to just move around the literal gateway into the underworld.
Real question is: does Moody see, what's underneath dementors' cloaks? And, if he sees it physically, does his mind register and remember, what it sees?
I would love to see a theory video on whether or not some form of dementor fluid (tears or blood) could have been an ingredient in the potion that Dumbledore drank in Half-Blood Prince. This is solely based on Dumbledore seemingly reliving his worst memory while drinking that potion.
But what if the Boggart-dementor's effects is due to the placebo effect? Harry could just be so afraid of the dementors that his subconscious is what makes the him feel the same effects? To check this, did lupin feel the boggart-dementor effects? Did he ever eat chocolate while teaching harry?
@@lachlannmccurrach5481 So if Lupin doesnt eat it, is he being effected by the Boggart-Dementor? If not, the effects we read about are happening entirely inside Harry's mind
@@BrigadierVo Not being told this does not mean it did not happen, no this isn’t an argument that it necessarily did affect him, just that Harry not noticing and explicitly telling us that he saw Lupin eating chocolate doesn’t mean Lupin didn’t, Especially considering the experience for Harry and how overwhelming it would be it’s most likely he wouldn’t have noticed
I want a theory on how the First Years Entrance to Hogwarts is a test to make sure Obscurials don’t get into the castle, including the age of admittance.
Yes, the videos are just amazing! Before each theory video, this is what goes down: Me: *Sees title of SuperCarlinBrothers theory video* Me before watching the video: What?! That's ridiculous! How can that be?! Me after watching the SuperCarlinBrothers theory video: Oh my God, you're right! This is the best theory ever! And then that keeps happening for almost every theory video. In fact, one of the few SuperCarlinBrothers theory videos is the most recent one about how Bruno from Encanto is Alberto's father. I didn't like that one much, it destroys the reveal and redemption of his actual character. I'd believe that the story version of Bruno that everyone was afraid of (the one in the stories) could have left his child, because you know.... Evil... But not the real Bruno that was revealed.
I think Moody's Eye is the Eye of Horus, or in that ballpark at least. Another powerful magical item within the WW, that's been passed around for centuries.
the 3rd book has almost always been my favorite: it's the only book where voldemort isn't the main bad guy, we meet several important characters (trelawney, lupin, pettigrew, and, my favorite HP character: Sirius black). We also get introduced to dementors/patronus, werewolves, animaguses, the marauders map, time travel, hogsmeade, knockturn alley, and, in the movies, the new/improved Dumbledore. Also Buckbeack. Did I miss anything?
@@angelfromashes1792 He's supposed to be Santa Claus-ish; that was literally the attraction of Dumbledore. In the books, he was an old, wise gentleman who was kind and actually seemed truly wondrous/pure of heart (does that ring a bell by any chance?). This made it even more surprising and shocking when it was revealed that he had been somewhat power-hungry in his youth, although love is also comprehensible.
@@lachlannmccurrach5481 Thinking about Rowling's inspirations I thought about where she could have come up with the character of Alaster "Mad Eye" Moody. In Norse mythology, Odin had an insatiable desire to know all things hidden from him. This was the motivation behind why he sacrifices his left eye. This is the SAME eye we see Moody "lost" and replaced. We can take it a step further and compare the characters of Barty Crouch Jr and the shape shifting trickster god Loki who even one time impersonated the All Father. Just as Barty impersonated Alaster.
@@lachlannmccurrach5481 the idea of the Fates having only one eye is actually a misconception. For example, the Three Fates in Disney's movie Hercules and other recent pop culture media have features reminiscent of the Graeae. They were rotten and hag-like, and they all shared one eye. Because of the this, the Graeae and the Fates are often confused with each other.
I love this idea! I always imagined them kind of the way they portrayed the separated Obscurus in Fantastic Beasts, but them being baby dementors/original form makes so much more sense
Sirius tells Remus to fight it when he was already mid transformation, this shows to me that Remus can control himself for a while and that’s what he did in that lesson
I always thought of that to be a desperate plee to Remus to fight the beast that he becomes when he is a werewolf, especially as we know that Sirius' presence along with the other two mauraders was able to restore that internal humanity and thus lead to a more passive Remus. This is a really interesting interpretation though!
I always think the laughter thing is that it has to be genuine laughter. You can't just force yourself to fake a laughing noise, you have to actually find it funny
8:58 Although that is true, the Boggart possesses a weaker version of the Dementor’s abilities. In fact, this is the reason Lupin uses a Boggart rather than a real Dementor while teaching Harry how to perform the Patronus Charm.
I’m gonna say it’s at least worth a shot to slow it down or try to stun it, but it’s not even as effective as a partial patronus Not a bad thing to try in a pinch, but entirely situational (moreso than even running into a dementor outside of Azkaban or The Wars)
Philosophically, fear is not the same as despair, and laughter is not the same as happiness. Related, yes, but different. But giggles brought on by gigglewater are not mirthful laughter, so I say it would confuse the boggart, but would not destroy it.
Something I really considered during this was Harry “fearing fear itself” meaning the boggart had no form to take, and therefore had no choice but to reveal it’s true form as a dementor type creature. That it, as a baby dementor, could take its true form to inflict fear upon Harry as what the boggart and dementor stands for is negativity and fear.
@@jakewhiston6461 there's a difference between a magical suitcase and a regular drawer though; if it stayed in the form it was last in and it was pretty big it wouldn't really make sense for it to be able to fit in a drawer
@@sploog yes but instead of the suitcase being bigger on the inside the creature shrinks to fit the dimensions of what it's trying to enter, like the creature in the first film
I always just assumed that the reason they are taught ridiculus is to introduce that type of magic to the reader before Harry has to learn the patronus charm.
That’s literally all it is. Rowling used the boggart as a literary device to introduce a theme in the story, it doesn’t have to be this insane theory….
The saddest part about Molly vs the Boggart is at some point she ends up seeing almost every single one of them either dead or gravely enough injured that they might appear dead in real life: - Ron after being poisoned - Bill after being attacked by Greyback - Arthur after being attacked by Nagini - George after losing an ear - Fred - Harry after "dying" Percy is the one exception.
It's kinda funny when you think about it. Everyone gets mad at him (not entirely wrongly..i guess) for not entering the fray until the final battle, but it actually keeps him remarkably safe
The boggart being able to mimic the powers and effects of a dementor has always confused and intrigued me. I've been pondering this with my brother for years. Your guy's is the best explanation for it I've ever seen and makes the most sense imo.
I mean.. and hear me out… it’s possible that Harry had just recently had a very traumatic experience on the train and the boggart triggered a PTSD experience for him. But nah, Harry Potter creatures are Pokémon now, that’s cooler
so when the dementors were breeding in the later books were they breeding baby boggarts? Were the boggarts moving into random muggle cupboards? Were muggles opening their cupboards to find their absolute worst fear? I know muggles can't see dementors.. but I love this image
I like to imagine they are like dogs. All dogs are the same animals, but there are many different breeds with different characteristics. In this case, there is a fear breed and a despair breed. They look different and have slightly different powers, but ultimately function very similarly.
Also! Just like dogs, they have different levels of danger. Both a Great Dane and a Chihuahua can bite you, but most adults are gonna have no trouble with fighting off a Chihuahua.
Something I've always thought was dumb is that they say "no one knows what a bogart really looks like" but... mad eye can see through *multiple* walls so I'm glad this vid dropped
I believe when lupin says ridducuilus to get rid of the boggart in prisoner of azkaban, it is described as being said "sleepely" so it seems like it had an effect.
Moody's boggart was himself, trapped in his own trunk, as he'd been for the entirety of the previous school year. When he saw himself hiding in the drawer, he knew it was a boggart.
I like to think that Moody would see something cute and innocent as his jaded mind would see it as something that would cause you to let your guard down and wide open for an attack. CONSTANCE VIGILANCE!!!
Interesting theory! My assessment of Harry's reaction to the boggart-dementor has always been more of a placebo effect. I never assumed the boggart-dementor has the actual abilities of a full-fledged dementor, and that Harry feeling the effects was just his own internal fears and expectations of how to feel around what appears to be an actual dementor. But the idea of a boggart being a lesser/earlier form of a dementor is a curious thought. Likening it to the evolution of pokemon or metamorphosis of a butterfly (weird to use dementor and butterfly in the same sentence) could make some sense. There is that brief mention in HBP about dementors breeding and the fog that it creates, so who's to say there aren't little boggartlings slinking around in the fog?
I think it's really great that you're throwing this theory out there since it's a correlation that's surprisingly easy to make, yet I have never seen anyone talk about this. And it is certainly entertaining to think about, but: Correlation does not equal causation. It is suspicious that these creatures show so many similarities, but that just isn't enough to give the theory that boggarts are baby dementors any leg to stand on. The only thing that could have been a real argument for this theory was the boggart's replication abilities. But the fact's presented here are easy to poke holes in. We can't assume that the boggart wouldn't be able to replicate venom? Shouldn't it be able to replicate every physical aspect? And the Lupin argument just feels disingenuous, since it's not like one second of moonlight equals an instant werewolf transformation. We don't even know if the boggart is really copying a dementor's ability like you described (isn't his mom's screaming an essential part of Harry's fear? we don't even know if the boggart was really doing anything to harry or if the stress just made him pass out) and if it can, it's still not a good argument since we can't be sure it doesn't copy every ability of any creature it turns into.
If a thalassaphobe (fear of the Ocean, open water) met a Boggart, would it just flood the room? Could you drown in a Boggart? If it was outside, how far would it flood?
Your and Ben's videos individually or together are always great. I really love this channel, it has real value to it. Not just voted on you but also gave an explanation in the field below for the best local influencer. :) Keep up the great work.
In the book also Snape steps out of the cupboard. It goes like this - " A jet of sparks shot from the end of Professor Lupin's wand and hit the doorknob. The wardrobe burst open. Hook-nosed and menacing, Professor Snape stepped out, his eyes flashing at Neville. So it means boggarts can see who is facing them from inside of cupboards or wardrobes. And probably Moody saw what his worst fear was in the cupboard and recognised the boggart.
Does anyone else think it was irresponsible for lupin to do the boggart for the whole class to see cause like if one of the kids was abused I doubt they would want any of their peers to know Especially malfoy
I think the fact that it's in class serves a purpose, cos if your first encounter was a one-on-one like Harry's, that would be waaaay more harsh (even if you know the teacher is there). With all the class there you cant trick your mind into seeing it as an activity: I mean we see it in that scene how they were all nervous untill Neville's (who actually got his abuser) triumph, and then everyone congratulate him and started having fun with it. Contrast that with a long and miserable waiting line of not knowing what awaits you and probably a much more variable degree of succes/failure... (Probably having an extra set of laughs from people who might not fear the same thing you do helps a lot in giving you confidence)
Here’s a question for you. In Order of the Phoenix, when Mrs Weasley asks Moody to check if there is a boggart in the desk and he uses his magical eye, what would he see? Doesn’t the boggart need to know it’s being looked at to change form?
Listen, listen. And I seriously can't stress this enough. This exact question is literally the intro to the video I'm losing my mind. How did you even post this
They answered this question at the end. They believed he would see a baby dementor. They just don't know why. It could be because that's what a bogart is or it could also be because they think Moody's greatest fear is a dementor.
Id just like to take a moment and thank SCB and all the other channels that have better help as a sponsor. "What is Moody afraid of?" The mans is literally the most paranoid guy alive, but tbh, his "biggest fear" might be being locked in that trunk again, that was pretty traumatic.
I always assumed that Madeye saw whatever the last person who saw it was most afraid of. I always felt like it just chilled as whatever the fear of its last encounter was and never really transitioned into a true form of it’s own.
the whole "do boggarts automatically transform when being observed whether or not they're aware of it" just rings a "if a tree falls in a forest..." bells to me. haha
Absolutely love the video!! I wanted to give my personal thoughts on one thing you said though. I don’t think Moody’s boggart would be a dementor. Yes “the only thing he fears is fear itself” is very much a statement I could be seen being made about Moody. And yes Lupin does say to Harry that seeing a dementor for his boggart suggest the only thing he fears is fear itself. And I also like how it fits with your theory; that if you fear the ultimate fear-fear itself-you will see a boggarts true form. But…think about it. Moody is a highly skilled auror who I’m assuming has no trouble casting a powerful patronus. Meeting a dementor would be no problem for him. Nothing to fear. Even though Lupin says that line, Harry very explicitly fears _dementors_. They’ve been cropping up all over and making him hear his mother screaming. He doesn’t know how to deal with them. He’s not afraid of fear, he’s very literally afraid of dementors. Dementors would be scary to someone who doesn’t know how to deal with them, or can’t generate the happy thoughts to vanquish them. They wouldn’t be scary to someone who can deal with them without trouble. Remember, dementors ultimately represent depression. Depression isn’t at all scary to people who have never dealt with it, and/or can easily generate happy thoughts. But to those who _do_ deal with it…it’s far scarier than any clown or spider. I don’t think Lupins line is meant to be taken that if someone sees a dementor for their boggart they fear fear itself. I think Lupin was just being a good teacher and going “hey I know this is really scary that you see something worse than the other students, but it actually shows strength of character.” And I do think it _would_ be surprising to see a dementor be a students boggart. It’s basically going around and hearing what kids fear, and it’s all spiders and clowns…until you realize one kid deals with depression. And suddenly you realize that this kid is dealing with very real adult problems that, yes, probably shouldn’t be discussed with the class at large, but it also definitely shows depth and maturity to the kid worth commenting on.
J's confused as to how boggarts are considered not alive and can't die, meanwhile me living in a pandemic brought by a virus that isn't considered alive and can't die 😂
The snape revealing his patronus at the end always makes me tear up because I mean who wouldn’t knowing that… I guess Harry wouldn’t seeing as it’s snape confessing his love for Harry’s mother but still
Imagine running into a boggart in the wild and not realizing it's one, just your worst fear bearing down on you. I wonder if they actually attack you or if they just leer at you.
Ok why every time coming into these videos I’m like “that’s impossible” and when I’ve finished the video I’m like “This has to be correct J K Rolling come on please confirm” u also got my votes :)
8:44 I believe that this is because Lupin isn't actually afraid of the transformation, but the thought that it occurs. He isn't afraid to turn into a warewolf, but he hates that he is one. So, he isn't afraid of the full moon, but the sight of it. Similar with Harry. He isn't actually afraid of dementors, but their effect on him. So, in order to scare him they need to replicate those effects. Plus, in the "Goblet of Fire" Harry recognises a Boggart because it trips on its cloak, meaning they aren't meant to float like dementors. Further proof, is that Molly, in the scene mentioned in the beginning saw the corpses with blood coming out of them. Which means that boggarts can replicate substances. I do believe though, that Dementors were made by corrupting Boggarts.

Boggarts are generated and sustained by fear. Boggarts prefer to hide in confined spaces, such as cupboards and underneath beds, but also take residence in woods and around shadowy corners.
Jack the Ripper, a murderer from the Whitechapel district of London, was actually a boggart, and the most infamous boggart in the world.
www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/boggart
(The issue with this article is Rowling saying non-beings are "strange". They're not. No creature, alive or non-being, is strange. Humans aren't a baseline of life.
"There are no strange creatures, only blinkered people." - Newt Scamander
Likewise, poltergeists grow in places of and survive due to mischievousness.

Now I believe that it's mind blowing 🤯
Thats a good idea. I feel that Moodys worst fear was to not being able to keep fighting evil. So his boggarts could be him being disabled enough to need to quit the aurors. Like losing both legs or other lession that makes him unable to fight

That hurt bro

@Rozma9 Yeah, I think that was why it hurt. It turns out that death DOES separate the twins; reality is even worse than her fears were.
or maybe she was only scared of losing them both, as opposed to losing just one, given how similar.. okay, i'll stop.
@Pearleace No, no, thats cruel but you have a point- keep going?
“Death couldn’t find the Third Brother, but Moody could see through the Cloak”
Also, don’t forget, the Cloak was also not able to fool a map made by 4 rebellious teenagers, so that poses its own hilarious questions.
Maybe because it was partly made by a descendent of the original third brother
The map doesn't use sight, why should the cloak work against it?
Granted, one of the makers of said map owned the Cloak, so maybe it was easier than we think. As for the eye, I have no clue.
Death was simply unfamiliar with inexistent back then modern technologies, he created the cloak like ages ago!
The cloak isn't covering the bottom of his feet
Then again, there’s probably a lot of dark creatures that we haven’t heard of yet in the wizarding world!
that was my first thought too!
I was thinking the same thing
They covered that in the Azkaban episode. It was said they just were drawn to the island, not made there.
Rather than baby Dementors that eventually grow up to be a Dementor, Boggarts and Dementors could have been of the same magical family species. Like dogs vs. wolves. Maybe in magical evolution, the two species started to feed on slightly different things and process it in a slightly different way.
They mentioned poltergeists in the article used to connect Boggarts and Dementors. . . What if poltergeists are the things they 'evovled' from?
J: "Like come on, they're mentioned in the same sentence."
Me: "New headcannon! Peeves is a boggart with a permanent ridikulous charm on it!"
This comment is hilarious and underrated. Well done.
Maybe it can see boggarts as they are.
my new head-canon is that when Moody looked into the drawer he saw exactly the same bit of Voldemort that Harry saw in limbo in DH!
My headcannon is he sees a tiny drawer scale voldy just like pacing or being menacing
Moody: these boggarts need to try harder.
@@satsujin-shathewitchkingof6185
But would someone be actually afraid of the source of something they are afraid of more than what it causes?
But, could the Boggart perform the Dementor’s Kiss while transformed into a Dementor? That’s what I always wondered.
Lupin says it would be much worse if it was an actual dementor so I lean more towards no
probably not.
It goes like this -
" A jet of sparks shot from the end of Professor Lupin's wand and hit the doorknob. The wardrobe burst open. Hook-nosed and menacing, Professor Snape stepped out, his eyes flashing at Neville."
So it means boggarts can see who is facing them from inside of cupboards or wardrobes.
And probably Moody saw what his worst fear was in the cupboard and recognised the boggart.
Yeah, that is a very good point.
@@sharvithakur160 ok, I was going to check today but thx for doing it for me
Raises the question if they can see through Harry's cloak, and if so, is a valuable way of detecting invisible wizards if one can only put up with seeing their worst fear for long enough.
I thought maybe lethifolds would be the ones born out of rage, but idk
this is a cool theory
Credence is a good lethifold!

No, he's just the first CONFIRMED case of an Azkaban break-out. Barty Crouch Jr's breakout predates Sirius's, although it didn't become known until years later.
True, but Barty Jr doesn’t break out on his own, he’s broken out.
Sometimes you trade things off, adults are physically more powerful than children but their minds have trouble adapting to new things,it's a similar situation here
Dementors don't need to shapeshift, they completely override your perceptions and replace them with your greatest moments of sorrow and misery.
@@ThefifthBishopofGord dementors are much more powerful creatures than boggarts, so probably not this
I think it makes total sense that Moody’s boggart is a Dementor.
The saddest part of the boggart scene is that Fred and George appear together, because even in Molly's worst fears the twins could never be seperated
So.. What happens when you use Avada Kedavra on a Dementor? Could a Dementor pass through the veil? What would happen to it? What would happen to the veil?
The veil would get the big sad
@@obi501 I would guess nothing happens and the unspeakables get really annoyed that Dementors are too lazy to take the few seconds to just move around the literal gateway into the underworld.

@@lachlannmccurrach5481 Thinking about Rowling's inspirations I thought about where she could have come up with the character of Alaster "Mad Eye" Moody. Because of the this, the Graeae and the Fates are often confused with each other.
I got a question about boggarts: what if someone feared the true form of a boggart? Then what?
Yeah, I can't envision Arthur Fleck (Joker) warding off a Boggart by using his condition.
8:58 Although that is true, the Boggart possesses a weaker version of the Dementor’s abilities. In fact, this is the reason Lupin uses a Boggart rather than a real Dementor while teaching Harry how to perform the Patronus Charm.
If gigglewater defeats Boggarts, could it also be effective against Dementors?
no because for a dementor you need to think of a joyful memory
So does that mean drugs would work against dementors?
I’m gonna say it’s at least worth a shot to slow it down or try to stun it, but it’s not even as effective as a partial patronus
Not a bad thing to try in a pinch, but entirely situational (moreso than even running into a dementor outside of Azkaban or The Wars)
What if you just naturally laugh at stressful situations to cope? I and a lot of other people could have become immune to boggarts already! HAHAHA!

@@carsonlove531 but as a in universe explanation it kinda works as well
The saddest part about Molly vs the Boggart is at some point she ends up seeing almost every single one of them either dead or gravely enough injured that they might appear dead in real life:
- Ron after being poisoned
- Bill after being attacked by Greyback
- Arthur after being attacked by Nagini
- George after losing an ear
- Fred
- Harry after "dying"
Percy is the one exception.
It's kinda funny when you think about it. Everyone gets mad at him (not entirely wrongly..i guess) for not entering the fray until the final battle, but it actually keeps him remarkably safe
I was just reading PoA yesterday and I was wondering why the patronus charm would even work on a boggart! Great video (as always)!!
Well, the patronus worked against draco and his goons, so it's kind of a goodforall. It didn't defeat the boggart, though, only pushed it back iirc
I always liked to imagine that Boggarts look like little shadow Ditto's.
@@carsonlove531 Too bad, they don’t have ghost traps/pokeballs in the wizarding world.
I’ve thought about so many unanswered questions about boggarts for so long and this video really clears it up so thanks J :]
so when the dementors were breeding in the later books were they breeding baby boggarts? Were the boggarts moving into random muggle cupboards? Were muggles opening their cupboards to find their absolute worst fear?
I know muggles can't see dementors.. but I love this image
Dudley is a muggle and saw the dementors I think
Now imagine a dementor couple helicpopter parenting their boggart durings its fear scare.
Something I've always thought was dumb is that they say "no one knows what a bogart really looks like" but... mad eye can see through *multiple* walls so I'm glad this vid dropped
can we talk about moodys eye? where did that come from? Is that the 4th hallow? WHAT IS IT!!!
They have an old video on it that they linked at the end of this one!
7:18 "We need to win the Quidditch Cup!"
Oliver Wood had taught Harry well XD
🤣🤣boggartlings.....love it!
Every time the "hey brother" is changed, it completely throws me off. In the best way. 🤣
This…makes a lot of sense omg. I would not have made that connection!
Now I want to see a video on Moody’s eye being Death’s! So cool to see a lightbulb spark on camera. 😆
This made a good day even better! And as for the question of Modey’s eye, I think it was Life’s.
I saw the title and went through the theory’s arguments in my head- LOVE THIS!
I think it's really great that you're throwing this theory out there since it's a correlation that's surprisingly easy to make, yet I have never seen anyone talk about this.
And it is certainly entertaining to think about, but:
Correlation does not equal causation.
We don't even know if the boggart is really copying a dementor's ability like you described (isn't his mom's screaming an essential part of Harry's fear? we don't even know if the boggart was really doing anything to harry or if the stress just made him pass out) and if it can, it's still not a good argument since we can't be sure it doesn't copy every ability of any creature it turns into.
is nobody gonna talk about how j and ben just casually teleport around the room
If a thalassaphobe (fear of the Ocean, open water) met a Boggart, would it just flood the room? Could you drown in a Boggart? If it was outside, how far would it flood?
Maybe it'd just be like a big hand of water that tries to grab the user?
@@murdermeharry8703 thalassaphobes are afraid of the deep sea, not necessarily water so this wouldn't scare one
I’m pretty sure illusion would work, it might make the person see themselves on a spot of land completely surrounded by Ocean
I mean Lupins moon wasnt as big as the actual moon
Your and Ben's videos individually or together are always great. I really love this channel, it has real value to it. Not just voted on you but also gave an explanation in the field below for the best local influencer. :) Keep up the great work.
I think Dumbledore made Moody's Eye with the Elder Wand (and charmed his own glasses as well).
In the book also Snape steps out of the cupboard. It goes like this -
" A jet of sparks shot from the end of Professor Lupin's wand and hit the doorknob. The wardrobe burst open. Hook-nosed and menacing, Professor Snape stepped out, his eyes flashing at Neville.
So it means boggarts can see who is facing them from inside of cupboards or wardrobes.
And probably Moody saw what his worst fear was in the cupboard and recognised the boggart.
Does anyone else think it was irresponsible for lupin to do the boggart for the whole class to see cause like if one of the kids was abused I doubt they would want any of their peers to know
Especially malfoy
You mean like Neville, the guy who was so afraid of his TEACHER, Snape became his worst fear?
@@greenjay7471 exactly
This is simply one of the best channels on RUclips. Period.
Here’s a question for you. In Order of the Phoenix, when Mrs Weasley asks Moody to check if there is a boggart in the desk and he uses his magical eye, what would he see?
Doesn’t the boggart need to know it’s being looked at to change form?
I have wondered that same thing. Unless it had a nebulous form he could recognize.

Maybe Moody's biggest fear is not being able to be in constant vigilance, so boggarts obscure part of his visual range, he just notices a blind spot
Huh, what an interesting question
Thanks!
This is another great theory to add to your impressive list of Potter theories. I love how you guys dive deep into the series and get me to think outside the box. It is it books in this case? Lol
I cast my vote on the Roanoke page for you. Good luck!
Thank you for another great video!
Lovable rabbit hole of an episode! Especially the part about the moon.
Also the fact that expecto Patronum worked on the boggart when ridikkulus is the spell that is supposed to finish them of
Man even after 2 decades this channel gives me new info about our beloved franchise. Keep it up bro's!
I really enjoy this theory. I mean all of your theories are amazing but I’m completely sold on this one
Here we go again. Getting answers to questions I didn’t know I needed the answers to. Love these guys.
with every one of your videos, i read the title and think 'no way!' but by the end i'm totally convinced
I’m thinking that Moodys boggart would be the trio of Voldemort, Barty Crouch JR, and Wormtail
"What is Moody afraid of?"
The mans is literally the most paranoid guy alive, but tbh, his "biggest fear" might be being locked in that trunk again, that was pretty traumatic.
Nervous laughers must make excellent boggert exterminators.
He came remarkably close to quoting the princess diaries courage is not the absence of fear rather the knowledge that something else is more important
I always assumed that Madeye saw whatever the last person who saw it was most afraid of. I always felt like it just chilled as whatever the fear of its last encounter was and never really transitioned into a true form of it’s own.
I love these kinds of theories when it comes to fictional creatures, it brings to mind the theory that Sharpedo and Garchomp are related in Pokemon
Fun fact:Ron’s only scared of spiders because of an incident when he was little where Fred/George transfigured his favourite teddy bear into one.
the whole "do boggarts automatically transform when being observed whether or not they're aware of it" just rings a "if a tree falls in a forest..." bells to me. haha
"If your greatest fear was a unicorn" is something I never imagined hearing with my own ears in this lifetime lol
These dudes come up with the weirdest theories and im totally here for it
J's confused as to how boggarts are considered not alive and can't die, meanwhile me living in a pandemic brought by a virus that isn't considered alive and can't die 😂

I believe that this is because Lupin isn't actually afraid of the transformation, but the thought that it occurs.
