I always thought it was because Voldemort thought it would be a scary name
This is another prevailing theory.
That certainly helps!
That's the same logic as to why O-Ren's bodyguards were called "The Crazy 88" -- they thought it sounded cool.
@@SuperCarlinBrothers that it does
And they all eventually realised that ‘the Knights of Walpurgis’ was rubbish
Originally they were the Knights of Walpergis. Their symbol was the snake (symbolizing death) eating itself as a symbol for immortality. Death eating itself, so Death Eaters.

Ah yes I remember that from the previous Death Eater video
The snake, or ouroborus? Cause the ouroborus is usually associate diwth immortality as 8t is qite literaly a snake in a circle (sometimes a figure 8) eating it's tail (signifying cycles and/or imortality)
@@Maniac4Bricks Oh, good! There really is a previous video! I was really freaking out, wondering wth was happening, was I having a very vivid Mandela moment?? ... Thanks
For your edification: a snake in the form of a knot and eating itself at the tail is an old symbol called an ouroboros.
Thoughts prior to watching the video: they are called Death Eaters because Voldemort’s goal was to ultimately defeat death and not die. Death was one of the few things he truly feared and is also what his name translates to: Vol De Mort is French for Flight from Death
That would make complete sense
No actually Vol in french means both flight and theft. But from a grammatical point of view vol-de-mort would translate to flight of death wich doesnt make much sense, so i think it's intended to be translated as death theft. As in making the horcruxes he kills his victims in order to steal their life expectancy from them
And voldemort "ate death" with his horcroxes. Took the lives of others for himself
@@H2SO4pyro yes that's a better translation ! For the "flight of death" you can think of a "flock" or a "cloud" like a poetic way to say "death is coming".
Voldemort's perverted version of a Sin Eater ...A sin-eater is a person who consumes a ritual meal in order to spiritually take on the sins of a deceased person. The food was believed to absorb the sins of a recently dead person, thus absolving the soul of the person. Sin-eaters, as a consequence, carried the sins of all people whose sins they had eaten. Cultural anthropologists and folklorists classify sin-eating as a form of ritual. It is most commonly associated with Wales, English counties bordering Wales and Welsh culture.[1]
"The Lightning-Struck Tower" is a direct reference to "The Tower". A major arcana tarot card representing sudden & unexpected change, catastrophe, etc. The imagery includes a figure (most often two) falling from the top.
this is exactly what i was thinking when he was talking about it
Isn't this literally referenced in the book? Trelawney mentions it.
There's a book called "Looking for God in Harry Potter" by John Granger (yes, that's his real last name) and he mentions in it that Christians used to be called life-eaters, meaning that they're basically given life by celebrating communion (eating and drinking the symbolic elements of Christ, the life giver). He believed Death Eaters were called such because they are the opposite of life eaters (Christians, allegorically most of the "good guys" in Harry Potter).
It really fit in with everything else he said in the book when it came to Christian elements in Harry Potter, like each ending with a descent into a hades underground (or Forbidden Forest or literal graveyard) and a Christ-like figure rescuing Harry from a Satan-like enemy (Phoenix, stag patronus (white stags are Christ symbols), etc.). And then of course the whole "love conquers all" and the talk of sacrificing your life for others and the protecting others...
Anyway, I do love how you guys fleshed out the meaning of holly and yew. So much thought went into those books.
Also a centaur saved Harry Potter from Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest.
A centaur who was not wild and pugnacious like other centaurs in Greek Mythology was Chiron. He was known for wisdom and medicine.
I love this breakdown. Thank you. This sounds like an eye opening book on a phenomenal series.
THERE IS NO GOD BUT ALLAH , AND JESUS IS THE SERVANT AND PROPHET OF ALLAH , ALLAH gave Jesus the ability to give life by His Permission, it was a miracle, like each prophet has miracles that God gave him
@@nature-o4b I'm saying this with complete respect, but Christian and Muslim scriptures have different testaments. According to eye witness gospels written by Jesus' own followers, he claimed to be God multiple times, in every biblical account. I wasn't there to witness, I just wanted to state that and you can do and believe what you want. I hope you have a good day.
@@gymnastgirlflips hello, thank you for your respectful response. As for the Bible, only the original one contains the truth : that the first thing Jesus said when he was in the cradle is that he is a servant and a slave of GOD, and that he was His messenger. Be careful, all the versions claiming that Jesus is god were altered by mecreants in order to spread falsehood. If you have further questions please don't hesitate, but open your heart to the truth, and the truth is that THERE IS NO GOD BUT ALLAH , AND JESUS IS THE SERVANT AND PROPHET OF ALLAH , JUST LIKE MOSES, DAVID, NOAH, JACOB, MUHAMMAD, ETC... and because every prophet has miracles of his own, one of Jesus's miracle was that he was born without a father, just like Adam was created without a father nor a mother. GOD is Divine, He does not have companions nor sons, He is our Creator, we should respect our Creator. Peace 🤲🤍
Here's a point: I think ordering the basilisk to kill moaning Myrtle fits because Voldemort used Nagini to kill Snape, believing that would turn the wand over to him, so ordering someone's death with a snake probably counts as you killing them.
????
Is it my Computer or is this video... FASTER??
???
It's like this carlin-brother speaks way, way different than usually, but the seconds on the youtube-video dont show anything abnormal.

I would agree in the fact that you are using magic to speak to the snake. I dont think (from memory) you can just, learn to talk to snakes. Ron somewhat picked up bits from harry but i dont think he ever knew what he was saying in parseltoungue right?)
@@oswinosgood7870 Whether or not it has to do with magic, I don't think it's necessarily relevant. this was in response to his question of why Moaning Myrtle's death helped create the hoarcrux in the journal, because it wasn't actually Voldemort that killed Myrtle -- it was the basilisk... so his question was how could he be taking a life and create a hoarcrux when it was the basilisk that killed Myrtle and not actually Tom Riddle? But I'm saying that I think it would be consistent in the story, with Voldemort being considered the killer-by-snake, because he believed that killing Snape with Nagini would transfer ownership of the Elder Wand to him -- thus making him a killer-by-snake -- meaning it's not Nagini killing, it's Voldemort, in both Snap and Myrtle's case. Does that make sense?
I think the magical connection is the important part. I.e. Voldemort having his pet dog kill Snape wouldn't have done the same as magically compelling what are essentially familiars to kill.
@@briceshumate6857 I think if Voldemort ordered his dog to kill Snape, I think it would still be considered Voldemort killing Snape. That's my only point lol
I think the thing about Myrtle and the diary is that it was his first time attempting the spell. He had done a lot of research and there was still things he didn't know about the spell and how it worked. He probably wasn't sure if he would be able to communicate with the Horcrux or what kind of connection he would retain so using a diary would give him the best chance of being able to communicate if he wanted to or needed to and it allows that part of himself to communicate with others which obviously became quite usefull. It was his way of giving the spell every chance of working that he could. I think he used the snake because it would also test if he had to commit the murder himself or if it could just be him causing their death. In short I think he wanted to test as much about the spell that he could.
Now, tell us when the brother wands were made, and when Fawkes gave away the feathers. Does Albus become the owner of Fawkes after the whole Aurelius thing is resolved? Did he commission the wands from Ollivander before going to visit the orphanage where Tom lived? And why did he give up his snappy business suits for the Merlin look?
Maybe he started wearing the robes when he became headmaster
He must have given the feathers to Olivander before meeting Tom as he went to Diagon Alley the next day to buy his wand
My guess regarding Dumbledore's wardrobe is that he got his titles (Headmaster, Supreme Warlock of the Wizengamot, Order of Merlin, ICW, etc.) after he defeated Grindelwald, and ungrateful traditionalists, blood purists, and the like won't take him seriously if he wears business suits which they might see as Muggle attire, no matter how formal it looks to us the audience. I mean you never see people like Lucius Malfoy in those suits (though I might be mistaken of course). Robes are part of Dumbledore's campaign to win people over.
Actually the business suits and the whole look of Dumbledore just screams “miscast” to me. Jude law does not have Auburn hair, which is well established in the Potter Canon and he never had the whole muggle attire vibe. Though I can more easily overlook the muggle fashion statement if Dumbledore actually looked like a young Dumbledore as portrayed in the main canons.
guess he wanted to fit in better within Wizarding World....
i especially feel sorcerer's stone as a christmas movie because of the cool christmas scenes and they used to always play it on tv for free around xmas :)

Some Pagan practitioners and some witches still practice the magic of Ogham. The woods and their meanings are most likely based on Irish Ogham trees charts which use trees similarly to zodiac signs. Holly is the tree for the 8th lunar month for dates between July 8th and Aug 4th- and Harry was born July 31st. The yew tree is the tree for Yule which in pagan practice is the celebration of the winter solstice which is the longest night of the year, or the darkest day which can loosely be associated to Tom Riddle/Voldemort. JK Rowling frequently incorporates lore and mythology of all kinds. Her use of the meanings and representations of the trees of Ogham would not be unfounded. Btw love the channel!
Tom riddle was also born on December 31st so the middle of winter

We know that a snake, goblet, diary, locket, ring and diadem are a few of Voldemort's favorite things. So can we please get a full length version of 6:50 😂
The diehard Sound of Music fan in me laughed so hard at that point. I object to the notion of My Favorite Things is a Christmas song, but I firmly second this.
I have to go back and read _Half-blood Prince again,_ but I'm the movie, it almost seemed as if Snape didn't kill Dumbledore but the fall from the Astronomy tower did. The Carlin Bros. brought it up in a different video.
Still wondering if JKR is out there watching Carlin Brothers theories just to write them down for herself so she can say in her next tweet that she planned it all along
Not that we put any stock in what she says anymore
@@dobythejank Rowling is a terf. She's bigoted and we don't care what she says because of it.
@@dobythejank dude, she's a terf. She actively hates on members of her own gender just because of how they were born. It has nothing to do with us being sexist, it has to do with her transphobia.

@kevin While I also appreciate Rowling’s incredible work as a writer, as a person she is problematic and transphobic. You must realise that.
Avada Kedavra definitely is not powered by lightning. The spell does not leave a mark on or damage the body in any way. The coroner's report on the Riddle family showed that. They all had a look of fear. Since the patronus require a happy thought and Harry's cruciatus curse didn't work because of his righteous anger, could Avada Kedavra be similar? Possibly a focus on anger or hatred. That would play into Harry's scar hurting badly when Voldemort kills someone since he picks up the spike in emotion.
I like this theory
I figured that Avada Kedavra was somewhat more basic than that. The spell simply rips the soul from the body. Nothing more, nothing less. It's spiritual violence, in a sense, and as such, requires substantial magical power and will. It's a cool theory that some form of negative emotion is involved, though, to be sure, but I see it more as that hatred making it easier to cast the spell, rather than the hatred being required. Sufficiently powerful wizards (Snape, for instance, when he euthanised Dumbledore) don't necessarily require that emotion to cast the spell.
I'm sure i heard somewhere that the lightning scar reflects the hand motion from the casting.
I'm sure i heard somewhere that the lightning scar reflects the hand motion from the casting.
@@telamere2043 That may be true and would make sense. Even if that is the case the spell itself does not use lightning in any way as it is described.
One other thing I like about their wands, is they both have Phoenix tail feather cores, and both return from the dead.
You quoting Ollivander making Voldemort’s wand had me rolling 😂
14” beechwood with dragon heartstring core, surprisingly swishy flexibility- according to Pottermore/Wizarding World but with the Universal zodiac wood, it’s Hawthorn.
Wow mine is same core but only difference is mine is English oak 12 and 1/2
😂 man I’m never going to escape my golden hearted kind nature 😂 instead of Pottermore giving me Pear Wood and Unicorn hair it’s Elm and Unicorn hair for the same reason on Universal wands 😂

Not gonna Lie the Zodiac Wood Thing is Meh to me.like yeah it worked with the characters in the books but its Just way too Limited
Fir wood, unicorn hair, 14 and a half inches, flexible and supple

Theory: To create a horcrux, you must lose your nose. Makes sense to me 🤣
Well, that's where your soul is. Seems pretty obvoius to me😁
Or at least some of your nose. Voldemort has no nose because he made enough to erase all the chunks.
If this is the case, Mad-Eye's a lot more suspicious...

I’m very proud of the fact that I was the one who tagged you guys in that video
Partial lyric: The holly and the ivy
When they are both full grown
Of all trees that are in the wood
The holly bears the crown
Also, at least as far as I can recall, the Holly and the Ivy also signifies Jesus' escape as a baby from the forces of King Herod, a baby marked by when he was born, and has an overall connection to the Slaughter Of The Innocents, the red and the green symbolizing both spilled blood and life, and summed up in the equally haunting Coventry Carol. Now, this one may not have been in JKR's wheelhouse when she wrote all this, but many scholars - devoted and believing - hold that the Slaughter probably did not happen because Herod's soldiers would have refused to perform this act, fearing reprisals from the populace among other things. So out of secrecy, wishing to get it right and fearing possible hesitation by his some of his followers (Not all are like Bella or Barty), he sets out to kill these possible-champions himself, surpassing or sinking lower than Herod is said to have. The yew tree, symbol of the graveyard, is overcome by the one will wield the might of the holly tree, associated perhaps twice over with another boy who lived.
Merry Christmas!
I got flashbacks to singing this song during high school watching this video, and especially reading this comment.
The Phoenix feather also fits in showing the similarities in Voldemort and Harry's stories. Phoenix's are symbols of rebirth or immortality, but the difference is in the woods. One acheaives rebirth throw consumption, killing others to make horcruxes, and one throw protection, dying to save everyone at Hogwarts. It fits incredibly poetically!
1. I believe they're called Death Eaters because they simply "feed on" death.
2. The "Lightning Struck Tower" refers to the tarot card of the same name.
3. Holly has always had a religious association with good, such as in the carol "The Holly & the Ivy."
When these theories are too perfect like this it always makes me wonder if JKR actually planned that out or if she just has an eternal batch of Felix Felicis
As someone who barely writes but thinks about ideas and symbolism for writing a lot, you'd be amazed the amount of stuff that comes together perfectly once an idea forms and over time those layers become even more perfect and you include more details to be more intentional.
So probably both and then one leads into the other.
The Basilisk never killed anybody. Myrtle is one of the only characters in the series who wears glasses. Not directly staring into a basilisk's eyes only petrified its victims. Myrtle saw it through her glasses, was petrified, and Voldemort did what he did to make a horcrux, killed her and dumped her back in the bathroom.
Woooahh!
i think myrtle wasnt wearing her glasses because she was crying and wiping her eyes a bunch hence staring at it directly
Wow. I've been wondering how the Basilisk killed Myrtle if she wears glasses, and I just thought maybe because she was crying, she didn't have her glasses on, but this makes so much more sense.
You're right! She wears glasses!
Glasses do not reflect or modify the incoming light. Their only purpose is to focus the light correctly - to compensate for your eyes natural lens.
Glass would not save Myrtle any more as normal eyes with regular eyesight would

@7:31 did you know that moldy-voldy died at 71, for a guy who wanted to be immortal, he only lived for 71 years, and we know wizards can live longer than 120 years (Dumbledore) and he died from outside forces actively trying to kill him. The way I concluded that Tim Roddle lives 71 years is this; in the second book, the chamber of secrets, we know that Tom was rewarded “a reward for special services to the school” fifty years ago along with the diary’s faded year indicating the same thing, he was sixteen, fifth year (the chamber scene says “-not a day older than sixteen”), when the events happened those fifty years ago, I then added those fifty years and sixty together, so 66 then the extra 5 years between Harry’s 2nd year and deathly hallows, and there you have it 71 years old when he died, this is hilarious because he died younger then the average life span lol, and wizards are shown to be able to live longer 🤣🤣🤣

I’ve always had a head cannon that aside from the wood type and core most wands are crafted into roughly the same shape but when a wizard is consensual by the wand they imprint themselves onto it
So over time as the wand learns from the wizard it takes on a different shape and form

The crown of thorns would've been made from a spiny Acacia species, Holly is just another one of those winter defying evergreens used for decoration. And the trusty protective Rowan is my wand wood🌳 😁
Holly was a pagan Yule tradition. Christians repurposed it as Jesus's crown of thorns. Of course 98% of everything to do with Christmas is ancient and pagan at the end of the day.
I don’t think they meant the actual crown of thorns that Jesus would’ve worn was made of holly, just that holly is now used symbolically to represent it.
The missed opportunity for the pun "These are a 'yew' of my favorite things" will forever hurt my heart...
You could have added that the phoenix feathers in the wands basically symbol the immortality they are fighting over.
I so badly want to go through every wand description in the comments and ask “Cut or Uncut?”
One thing you should look into (if you haven't already) is how did Voldemort retain his original wand? Did the Death eaters get to the Potter house and collect it before anyone else did? Or did the part of home that was in his body somehow keep it?

My wand is made of Laurel wood with a dragon heartstring core, 12" and suprisingly swishy flexibility. Also, I'm a member of the Huffpuff house, and my Patronus is a Badger. If that doesn't say Loyalty, I don't know what does.
So. To be unreasonably pedantic. In most graveyards nowadays in the US, we've put our dead in concrete boxes to then put in the ground so that embalming fluid doesn't ruin the earth. Therefore, most yew trees planted in such a place aren't actually taking nutrients from biodegrading humans, unless it's a much older graveyard. The symbolism and imagery is fantastic, though. Also, support natural burial!
I always confused Death Eater and Dementor, my brain thought it made sense for each to be named the other.
Laurel wood! They’re said to not be able to preform a dishonorable act.
Just saw your Spider-Man review, possible video topic for you. Did Dr. Strange break the timeline, or create an alternate reality with his spell in Spider-Man? Cause the spell made it so no one knew Peter existed...ever. Which means that Tony never could have recruited him into the Avengers, so Peter couldn't have partaken in Civil War, Infinity, End Game....or Happy would have known him which he doesn't. However, at the end of Spider-Man it seems as if all is the same minus Peter's identity known...how can the events that happened have happened if Peter was never in the Avengers? Did the spell not work, and the world does still have the proof that Peter is Spider-Man but no physical memory? Did the spell work and the reality we see at the end of Spider-Man can't exist cause Peter was never part of the Avengers so the events couldn't have happened the same? Or did we see Peter in a new timeline or universe that's similar but a universe were he never existed in the first place so things could happen the same without him being a part of it?
oi, spoilers!
My thinking is it would have played the same, only with Tony recruiting Spider-Man with no knowledge of what Spider-Man's true identity is. Though alternative time lines is also a possibility, since the act of sending everyone to their home reality technically created 7+ new timelines
My understanding is that the spell just erases all peoples' memory of ever having known about the existence of Peter. I never thought that it changed actual events, just people's knowledge of the events.

Not that this has anything to do with the term "Death Eater", but bows were used to bring death to an enemy in battle (or death to an animal in hunting - which you would then eat).
Stop calling JK Rowling "the author" she has a name and you're no better than her for trying to remove her from her own franchise. Either go all the way and stop using her works to make money if you're so disgusted by her, or just use her name like a rational human being would.
She chooses to reject the identities of others. We can do the same to her.
@@thisisasupersayin376 you can, and you have every right to, however, you can't pretend like you somehow are taking the moral high ground. On a side note, she didn't reject anyone's "identity". She never stated that she dislikes anyone for any reason. She merely had the audacity to voice her opinion on the debate about whether or not biology is a thing. She just happened to have a different opinion than the loudest and meanest people on Twitter, and they want to bully her into obscurity as a result. I personally think that's unethical.
@@Skywalker0-3 See, there IS no debate about biology being real. Everyone knows biology is real. The only ones trying to make it a debate are transphobes. They, for some reason, are trying to make a connection that pro-trans = anti-biology when there's no connection there to be made.
@@thisisasupersayin376 that's simply incorrect. You're telling swaths of people that they hate an entire simply because you disagree with them. It's not an honest way to win an argument. It's a tired and childish method used by leftists to shut down debate. If everyone were to just say that anyone who disagrees with them is a racist, homophobe, transphobe, or whatever applies to that situation in their mind, there would never be any advancement in anything. It just grows the pointless rift in this country, and personally, I'm getting pretty tired of it. I don't have to prove that jk and everyone who agrees with her in this particular issue isn't a transphobe, because it's not relevant to the discussion as to whether or not women are men or men are women. I've got a Laurel wood with a phoenix feather core, 14 ½" and slightly yielding flexibility!
Can we stop with the cannibalism theories? First off, all of his killings were completely unmarked, and secondly, Voldemort would never even touch a muggle-born, let alone EAT them, and 3rd, it is just as basic as saying Inferi are zombies. 4th, even is Voldemort was willing to touch a muggle-born, can you REALLY see him taking the time to gnaw at the flesh of someone LIKE said zombie? It's just weird.
A sin-eater is a person who consumes a ritual meal in order to spiritually take on the sins of a deceased person.
My wand is: Alder wood, Dragon heartstring 12 3/4 inches
and amazing video its sooo cool how you guys piece these things together.
Why don't you just say JK Rowling's name, rather than "the author". It's all rather you-know-who ish! If you're fine with talking about JK Rowling's creations then there's no logical reason not to say her name.
What's the problem with choosing not to acknowledge her identity? After all, she does the same thing with the entire trans community!
My wand wood: 15 Inches Thunderbird Tail-Feather, Blackthorn Wood
Ebony, unicorn hair and I can't believe how consistently high the quality of these videos are.
10:25 alternative clip: "Harry Potter, our new celebrity." - Severus Snape
That freaking holly wood realization though. Major epiphany.
Pear and dragon heart string. Maches my personality just perfect! And also resonates with the warmest childhood memories about the peer tree at our old house we used to play around
My wand is- “Sycamore wood with a dragon heartstring core, 14" and unyielding flexibility” according to pottermore
I never knew how much I need a Voldemort version of the favourite things song untill you said it…
I was about the comment “wait didn’t you do this one already” right as Ben said it lol
Mine is Beech wood with a phoenix feather core, 11 ¾" and reasonably supple flexibility. I learned that Beech wood is often used for furniture and cabinetmaking because it is harder than oak, and much more commen, but dose not fare well outside.
Loving the fact that they made a three year refresher 👌
Great video! We were just discussing this on HP reddit today!
My wand is Ash, Phoenix core, 10 3/4”, solid flexibility.
Laurel. When I tell you I was SHOOK when that came up after the guizz
Dogwood and Unicorn Hair. 12 1/4" Springy flexibility. Awesome video! I'm always wondering about the wands in Harry Potter world. (nice reference to the "terrible, but great" scene) My sibling's wand (according to Pottermore) was dragon heart string and Cherry.
A Sound of Music reference in an SCB video. My heart is happy! 😁
He didn't want to defeat death...he wanted to "def eat death"
6:02 “After all, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named did great things. Terrible, yes, but great.”
-Garrick Ollivander
I always found it interesting that Voldemort surrounded himself with graveyards, Death, etc., when he was so terrified of Death. He was like a little kid standing on the porch of a haunted house to prove he’s brave.
I cracked up when he said “Terrible but good”💀🤣
best moment in your video, voldemort's "a.. he he..." 🤣👌
