As for why squibs can be at Hogwarts? Because whereas Muggles does not have a drop of magical blood in their bodies, squibs does, so even if they don't have magical ability, they have a genetic, innate affinity with magic that Muggles lack, allowing them to see things Muggles can't, even if they too are in some ways limited in what they can perceive.

Right, like I can buy Flich being a poltergeist that isn't self aware but not if he actively works against who/what he is. It adds to much demension to the character for me to be sold on it. It's a fun theory though. And I think Flich being a squib is probably more exactly opposite of a being that is manifested by magic.
Yeah, that bit kills it for me. It makes zero sense for Filch to be both a squib and a poltergeist. I think he's just scary and Harry is literally always up to something out of bed at night.
but we don't know WHEN he received the leaflet. hes probably been considering trying anything to learn magic after however many years Filch has been there. I mean the Grey Lady still attends transfiguration classes and studys so its not too far fetched to think he'd do his own studying.
Interesting to note the Filch's influence over the students was at its highest during Umbridges term in hogwarts, and his giddiness of the rules she implemented
when I was first reading the philosipher's stone I thought because filch's eyes match his cat's he must have some sort of connection. I thought that maybe sometimes his cat's eyes glow and that's when he's seeing through her eyes.
HP fan: Mrs. Rowling, is it true that Filch is a poltergeist? JK Rowling: Yes, he is a pansexual. HP fan: That 's not what I asked... JK Rowling: Well, anyway, it is canon now.
Argus: The name of a giant in Greek mythology said to have 100 eyes. Argus aided by Ms Norris keeps a close eye(s) on the school/students, which is mentioned in the video. Filch: British slang meaning to steal/take without consent of the original owner. So I think Argus was "Hired" as punishment for trying to steal something from Hogwarts, but this theory is cool too.

Since Sirius’s ancestor face was burnt off the family tapestry and was never talked about, and Ron’s cousin that he spoke of once in the books.
Remy Bartels Yeahh he is actually a Squib. Squibs can decide to stay in the Wizarding community, but they are looked down upon or go stay in the muggle world and live normal muggle lives. He decided to stay and Dumbledor gave him a job at Hogwarts. There’s a RUclips video about Squibs

I could see both Peeves and Filch existing as almost the students superego and id, and keeping both around highlights how being overly concerned with rules makes you kind of lousy to be around, but also how ignoring the rules at every turn and can lead to mayhem. This way, the students develop in a more middle zone, wanting to be neither the superego Filch or the reckless Peeves.

@Fizz Except this baked potato has exactly two strands of cheese that stretch for 2.54 centimetres, meaning that the flux capacitor has calibrated sufficiently to travel one month ago where you posted this comment, which means that 1 cubic cm of the meatball is slowly corroding and Mrs Norris is most definitely a part of his manifestation. We also know that Argus was a Greek protector with 100 eyes, and because there are exactly 121.34 grains of rice on my plate, it means that Argus is actually not a normal Squib.
Wasn’t filch around before Dumbledore was headmaster? I remember him saying something like, “when so and so was headmaster, I could dangle people by their thumbs from the ceiling as punishment”
I love the theory and all but there’s a simpler answer : Hogwarts was hiring filch needed money so he went to work at Hogwarts as the caretaker because that’s the only job that didn’t require him to use magic and he’s the only one who applied for the job as a caretaker so they had to let him be the caretaker
But why does Hogwarts need a caretaker in the first place? We know that the castle has house elves who clean the dorms and stuff, could they not just clean the rest of the school as well?
He's kind of a plot device used just for adding suspense to certain parts of the story where there would normally not be much if he didn't suddenly show up. Plus, making him an actual wizard would give him too much power over Harry, especially in the early books. If he had been a fully functional wizard it wouldn't have been enough to just hide or run away from him.
I was always under the impression that Dumbledore took pity on Filch and gave him a pity job close to the magic he craved, even if it was also torture for him
Another facet to this theory is how filch constantly complains that the old punishments that he loved aren’t allowed anymore, but given how long dumbledore has been headmaster, he couldn’t have been able to do all those torture punishments unless he was a poltergeist and thus lived way longer, before dumbledore was headmaster.
As a teacher, I know it's very tongue and cheek to the students to say "the security guard want me to remind you that please don't break the rules" than "Don't break the rules kid."
I really want him to make a video with a really out there question as a title and have the video be him saying "no" and then a black screen for 10 minutes with 10 adds
I think Filch, and as an extension his position, is an extended test on the students to test their ability TO break rules, to see how well they handle authority, etc., and is part of Dumbledore's closest circle in the castle because of it.

PhilBagels but if muggles can see it from the inside I feel like that would make for way more problems. People, especially teens and kids, love exploring and would explore castle ruins even if it was just ruins so wouldn’t that be an issue if they could actually see inside?
Does Peeves have a physical form? Is he tangible? Filch is most certainly tangible. He brings Harry to his office (by force) in the third book, and he can see the castle for what it is because he is a Squib. He can also see the dementors when they're at the castle in the third book.

Well the only way in which that would make sense is if wizards can be detected, even subcontinently, but squibs cant, that would fit with him appearing from seemingly nowhere
This theory definitely convinced me, but I just wanted to mention one thing about squibs: I believe it’s possible for them to see and therefore enter Hogwarts since mrs. Figg, who’s a squib, is able to see dementors, unlike muggles. I think squibs still posses enough magic to see things, muggles can’t, like Hogwarts or Dementors (and maybe even Thestrals👀) but they aren’t magic enough to cast spells or brew potions.
Firelord Kushroll jkr never said black hermione is canon, just that she likes the idea. black hermione actually makes a lot of sense, besides like 2 sentences in the books that say ‘white’ and ‘pale’
8:51 It's part of the job requirements for a Hoghwarts caretaker: -Qualifications needed: none. -Preferently a squib. -Must be a grumpy old man. -Needs to hate everything and everyone. -Compulsory to have a pet cat.
Addressing the point about how Filch can see the castle, I’m pretty such he would be able to see magical things as a Squib just like Mrs. Figg could see dementors
Iirc, she didn't actually see them, which was a point raised in Harry's trial. But she felt them and could accurately describe their presence so her testimony was believed.
the thing is she was lieing during the entire thing, she was not actually there. it is recognized that squibs whilst unable to proform magic can still see magical things, they just lack the power to manifest spells.
True, but that means we don't know whether or not she could have seen them if they were in front of her. Idk about the rest, I think it's recognized that they are practically muggles and she wouldn't see them.

There is no credence to this particular theory.

Theres only 1 issue Harry found a Kwikspell leaflet why would filch have that if he was a Poltergeist
It's possible that Filch, as a poltergeist, just wanted to learn magic in order to get an advantage over the students.
OMG i love this community instead of this comment starting a flame war ive got some awesome counter arguments for my argument

Argus: The name of a giant in Greek mythology said to have 100 eyes. Argus aided by Ms Norris keeps a close eye(s) on the school/students, which is mentioned in the video.

You're welcome!
FOR REAL
Except Filtch is actually a squib. Dumbledore just offered a job to him because he pitied Filtch. Since squibs born in magical families like the Blacks and the Weasleys, are looked down upon. Since Sirius’s ancestor face was burnt off the family tapestry and was never talked about, and Ron’s cousin that he spoke of once in the books.
Omg thank you for the heart!
Didn't they completely make up Brany Chari?
I always thought something was wierd about him. But I thought he was just creepy

@@slevinchannel7589 There wasn't a theory to debunk
@@TaliesinMyrddin The Theory 'Is Filch a Poltergeist' stands in the video title you genius. It even has questionmarks behind it, duh.
Case and point: when Filch talks about how he misses hanging the students by the ankles...he could not be that old if he were human
not really corporeal punishment was only banned when albus became headmaster, give the wizardign world general distregarge for safty of minors, do real think they had a parrell history of lessening corporal punishment in?
In the muggle world corporal punishment in private schools in Scotland was only banned in 2000, 2 years after Deathly Hallows takes place. It was only banned in state schools in Britain in 1986 (5 years before Philosopher's Stone).
Corporal punishment mainly referred to isolation treatment and caning hanging by your ankles and torture was waay before that
@@timothybutler7203 Way before that in the muggle world where they had a slow lessing from birchinchs that drew blud to canining, howver the Wizarding world with it instant healing of rather servere injuries has show a much more "relxed" attidue to student safety, the book make it clear that it wasn "that way back" for wizards.
PS no corperal punishment never refered to issolation punishments, coperal litreal measn "of the body"
Corporal punishments, in some circumstances is still allowed in America, though it usually requires parental approval. About 30 years ago, it didn't even need that. Caning is still used in Hong Kong, as a punishment to breaking laws. Even of young people.
But then why is Filch treated like a human being? He's even capable of sending letters and tries to learn magic on his free time
well if it acts like one, and looks like one, then it is common curtsy to treat it as such. He is still I would say, a thinking entity.
Peeves is also probably capable of sending letters lol.

I really like this theory, I REALLY do...but if J.K Rowling said that Mrs.Norris isn’t special then I don’t think think this works. But on the other hand she says the Cursed Child is canon so she an be wrong about her world.
Stories once they're put out no longer belong to their authors but the world. Usually the author still provides the best answers but occasionally the world produces a better one. I think the video here is one of said better ones.
I always saw Filch as the male version of petunia, they’re both secretly jealous of people who can perform magic, leading to both being resentful towards witches and wizards (granted Filch only directs his at the students)
Wrong
I like the opinion that peeves just played a few harmless pranks every now and again, then he became the force of chaos he is now once Fred and George came
Also when thr marauders arrived. Those would be the two times at least when he'd go insane
Ok but how do you come up with these ideas?
Like one day your’re eating dinner and you just think, “hmm what if filtch was a poltergeist...”
Fizz, what?
@Fizz Except this baked potato has exactly two strands of cheese that stretch for 2.54 centimetres, meaning that the flux capacitor has calibrated sufficiently to travel one month ago where you posted this comment, which means that 1 cubic cm of the meatball is slowly corroding and Mrs Norris is most definitely a part of his manifestation. We also know that Argus was a Greek protector with 100 eyes, and because there are exactly 121.34 grains of rice on my plate, it means that Argus is actually not a normal Squib.
I think the SCB video titles are written by manatees, like the Family Guy jokes :D
Wasn’t filch around before Dumbledore was headmaster? I remember him saying something like, “when so and so was headmaster, I could dangle people by their thumbs from the ceiling as punishment”
Actually, what's the deal with Squibs loving cats so much?
Maybe cats are magical creatures themselves
They still get a familiar even if they didn't get magic? 🤷🏾♀️
oh yeah, I guess the only other squib in the books is also a cat lover
moral support due to sadness
@@percyweasley9534 that actually makes sense-
Also hi Percy
I love the theory and all but there’s a simpler answer :
Hogwarts was hiring filch needed money so he went to work at Hogwarts as the caretaker because that’s the only job that didn’t require him to use magic and he’s the only one who applied for the job as a caretaker so they had to let him be the caretaker
But why does Hogwarts need a caretaker in the first place? We know that the castle has house elves who clean the dorms and stuff, could they not just clean the rest of the school as well?
How could Filch’s arm get cut and hurt in the battle of hog warts if he is just a poltergeist
Are you still awake?
Filch: Always...
Obviously
Oh we ARE in trouble
"Students out of bed!"
Joakim Möller they are supposed to be out of bed you blithering idiot
As a teacher, I know it's very tongue and cheek to the students to say "the security guard want me to remind you that please don't break the rules" than "Don't break the rules kid."
loll

@@PhilBagels Jacob Kowalski might be a squib tho
@@EstellarLu Either way, he can still see Hogwarts. The spell that hides the castle from muggle view only works from the outside of some line.
PhilBagels but if muggles can see it from the inside I feel like that would make for way more problems. People, especially teens and kids, love exploring and would explore castle ruins even if it was just ruins so wouldn’t that be an issue if they could actually see inside?
7:57 I think I almost got a heart attack :D
Does Peeves have a physical form? Is he tangible? Filch is most certainly tangible. He brings Harry to his office (by force) in the third book, and he can see the castle for what it is because he is a Squib. He can also see the dementors when they're at the castle in the third book.

Pretty sure filch isn’t a poltergeist. He’s more likely a vampire.

Oooooooh
Why should he be a vampire?
Doesn’t sleep, check. Can appear out of the shadows like he’s part of the wall, check.
Yeah that makes sense but depending on stuff vamps sleep and he has been seen outside in sunlight with nothing looking unusual.
I think his purpose is to teach the students with a rulebreaking streak how to avoid being caught by muggles.
Finch can't be a poltergeist, he's just a man who is weirdly obsessed with shackles... oh wait...
If he's a poltergeist, then why does he take a Kwikspell course?
Because poltergeist on their own can really do magic, but there shouldn't be anything preventing them from trying to learn it.
