I actually have a theory about Luna. I think Nargles actually represent the people that bully Luna, and Wrackspurts are the mean things people say about her and others. For example, when Harry meets Luna in the beginning of Order of the Phoenix she says the charm she is wearing "keeps away the Nargles" which makes sense because when the bullies see her wearing it they think she is crazy and stay away. Also, at the end of OOTP she says her possessions were taken by Nargles, when we know it was most likely bullies. Now for the Wrackspurts. When Harry is stuck on the train and Luna finds him she says that his head is full of Wrackspurts, which it probably is seen as Draco Malfoy just got him stuck on the train and insulted him. Luna said Wrackspurts, "float in through your ears and make your brain go fuzzy." That makes sense because you hear insults, begin to think about them, and your brain does kind of "go fuzzy." That's just my theory! PS Good job to you for making it to the end! It means a lot! Edit: Omg thank you guys I have never really gotten anything but my own likes so thank you!:))
@@AlexandarHullRichter no body truly knows. JK Rowling said Gryffindor but tbh all the "Good Characters" are in Gryffindor. So everyone thinks he's Hufflepuff.
@@idontknowwhattocallthis8780 that makes sense. I actually just saw a good one from this channel that was saying in m more sense for him to have been a Slytherin, but Hufflepuff does fit his character well.
Same here. There better not be a theory about luna literally being Snape. I cannot imagine someone nice as she is growing up to be someone like Snape. It will be like rumbledore
I don't think anyone will see this, but Snape wasn't just made "bad" by being bullied. He also had a very difficult home life, whereas Luna's dad clearly loved her very much
Also unlike Luna, Severus was in slytherin which ment he was more likely to pick up his anti-muggle views due to the only people accepting him being pure blood slytherins.
Another sin of Remus (that is better in Hermione) is that he wasn't able to standing against his friends. Sure, it may be because of his insecurity for being a werewolf, and not wanting to lose the only friends who would support him in the way the Marauders do. But, still. He's not arrogant, he didn't bullied Snape. Bur he coudn't tell Sirius and Jmes to not do that. In the Order of Pheonix, he says he coudn't keep his friends away from problems. Bur, as Harry think in the same book, after seeing Snape's memory, he wasn't even trying. Hermione, in the other hand, was never afraid of standing for what she thinks is right, even if it means ddisagree and even argue with her friends
Maybe part of that is that she's autistic-coded, so she is less likely to intuit and capitulate to social convention, presenting itself through her as being willing to stand up to literally anyone.
Yeah, and I thought Remus was supposed to be the smart one! JK Rowling Most likely you right now: 😑😒 You knew I was going to say that, don't be Riddikulus! Siriusly. 😋 I'm Neville going to stop with the puns, and if you ever thought I was, you were totally Ron. 😏
That is true. Lupin was very insecure and had a serious case of bystander syndrome. I still love him, though. Being a werewolf is not easy, and he didn't stand up to Sirius and James probably because he didn't feel strong enough to. Remember, the werewolf transformation is painful, the werewolf in question loses all human sense and basically becomes a real, bloodthirsty wolf, and the condition is transmissible from parent to offspring; it is only luck that Teddy was not born a werewolf. Speaking of which, Lupin was not born a werewolf, while Hermione was always a Muggle-born and hence, no alternate universe would have existed where she was not what she is, while the same is not true for Lupin, who probably thinks about how life would be different for him if he wasn't bitten. I also don't know how much I agree with Hermione not being bothered by her Muggle-born ancestry. She doesn't let it affect her actions, and she obviously knows there's nothing she can do about it, but she is clearly hurt whenever people make some sort of comment about her.
@@randomperson8571 Except for the wolfsbane potion--that renders the drinker cognizant during the wolf transformation. While he's still weak and sickly every month, as long as he has his potion, he's still got the mind of a human, even tho the pain of the transformation isn't lessened. That's what made it so beautiful that his friends became unregistered animagi for him--so he could run around with them in the forbidden forest while nobody wondered why children were with a wolf, or out past curfew. The wolfsbane potion is also what renders the idea that 'all werewolves are dangerous and uncontrollably bloodthirsty' a fallacy, as long as they have access to the potion / ingredients.
When I saw that title, I took it literally, and began questioning how you reached the conclusion that "Luna" was secretly "Snape in a blonde wig" the whole time.

That was exactly what I thought! Like, was Snape using some secret Time-Turner? Was he, in secret, trying to forget James' bullying by dressing up as a girl and supporting Harry without the latter even knowing?!
@@sevionmelidan1682 Polyjuice requires an existing person to replicate. Hence me discounting that as what I thought the theory was, since it's unlikely Snape would be sneaking off to some faraway area to steal hair from some random girl every month when his stocks run out or whatever.
One of my favorite subtle details in the books is the fact that Neville isn't actually bad at magic. For the first five books, he's using an inherited wand. His wand didn't choose him so of course his magic isn't accurate or powerful. But then he gets a wand that's his and he becomes a competent, brave, confident leader. Its a good way of showing that people can excel if they're given the tools they need.
Harry's kindness and humility is basically THE key factor between the two groups. Harry isn't afraid of clueing Ron in when he's going too far, he's not afraid of helping Hermione to get out of her shell and loosen her up a bit, Harry helps tell Neville that he shouldn't let Crabbe and Goyle walk all over him which indirectly leads to Neville gaining self-confidence, Ginny already liked him right from the word 'Go.' but slightly changed her reason for liking him at the end of Book 2 (Harry noted at the start of Book 3 that she seemed even more shy around him after the events of CoS), and Luna, well, she was one of the first people who truly had some understanding of what he was going through in book 5, so he repaid in kind by calling her his friend and meaning it. He even tells Neville and Luna he thinks they're cool because they supported him when he needed it the most. Granted, Harry is not perfect, but he's clearly the deciding factor in how things turned out between his generation and the Maurader's era.
yeah Ron and Harry were scared shitless several times especially in the earlier books lol... I guess it's about how they handled it vs. how Neville handled it. Also WHAT they were afraid of was different. Neville was afraid of day-to-day stuff, like Snape and Slytherin bullies. Ron is afraid of spiders. Harry is afraid of getting killed by Voldemort so, you know, Neville definitely faces his fears more often than Harry and Ron.
ON TOP OF IT ALL: with Harry and Ginny naming their sons after James and Severus, I feel like they symbolically reconcile the two former enemies. Albus's name could be the missing link between them, standing for the force of understanding, peace-making and tolerance that he has always shown others, much like Lily, Hermione and Remus. The ending shows that the virtue coming out of correcting wrongdoings can be passed on a third generation through love and compassion. PS : This video was both heartbreaking and heartwarming 😭 I love the echoes btw the 2 generations ❤️

In the video you talk about how we see James being a bully and hear about James being a good guy, something I've always wondered is how perspective affects memories in the Harry Potter series. It is widely accepted that prejudices, history and general personality affects the way we retain and remember memories irl and how two people can remember the same situation in different ways. So how does that play out in the series? In that scene does James look so bad because it is Snape's perspective and as such he sees himself as completely innocent, the attacked victim that did nothing wrong. Examples as to changes perspective might be that James was getting revenge over something Snape did before the memory started or if Snape's affection for Lily and jealously over James mean he see Lily being harsher to James then she really was as it is very harsh for her to fall in love with him 2 years later, etc. I wonder if we saw that memory from James/Sirius view or a neutral view how different the memory would be. We see that Sirius and even Remus remembers that moment more fondly. It's not like we don't see that a person can alter their own memories (Slughorn). I wonder what other people's opinions are or am I just overthinking it? :)
Well when it comes to people having different perspective on one person, I have experienced something. I have experienced someone I used to be friends with, one where we had just grewn apart from, say about someone who was bullying me or had bullied me at the time, when I told her something about it or just saying that he was mean or something I don't remember exactly what it was. Anyway what she said then was only "he is nice to me", like does it means that just because he is nice to you that he is nice to everyone. Like take a more extreme example, take people who abuse their significant other and or child/children. People can have no clue and think that they are a really nice person, while at home they are beating them to a pulp. Sometimes one point of view is more valid than the other. And don't forget what Dumbledoor warned us, you will not see how a person really is from looking at how they treat their equal, but how they treat their inferior, or who they look at as their inferior. Also you could se or read that from day one that James was hostile towards Snape. I also don't think that it makes James a good person if it was the case that Severus had done something to Snape before this. Also to me the situation did not like something for revenge, but for humiliation. Like if there were equal in hurting each other from the beginning or had an equal rivalry, they would be more like Harry and Draco where there were more equal battles more in my opinion.
@@sarahkristinelervag9855 They do say that Snape and James used to jink each other and even when James deflated his head, Snape would still attack and fight James. So I think that joins the idea that Snape may not have been as innocent as the memory plays out, when we recall our own memories we tend to remember ourselves as innocent and good in them, whether we were or not, i just wonder if something similar is happening with that particular memory
@@rhiannondaye1263 I was not trying to say that Snape was innocent. But I feel that in the beginning of their time at Hogwarts I feel that James might have started to bully Snape then, and that Snape eventually learned to fight back. Also the way James called Snape names and what he called him tell me that he did bully Snape but Snape learned to fight back and was probably sick and tired of being bullied. The thing we hear Snape however call James the most, is arrogant. While James however was things like Snivelus, and commented on his hair and other physical features, as well as other things. And bullies don't need a reason to bully you, if you are weird or anything they don't like, you will get attacked in some shape or form. Yes Snape was not innocent in everyway, but that does not mean that the things James did right. James did things to make fun of and humiliate Snape which in my opinion, is a lot more though out and malicious than just Hexing back after someone have attacked you for years. Snape and his mother was also abused by Snape's father as well, which may change how you eventually react to getting attacked. Also James had a totally different status in school and brought his gang of friend and sometimes other people to watch whatever he dicided to do to Snape. And of course everyone see them selves an the innocent ones or the one who is right, but that does not mean one are never right just because most people see themselves as the ones who are right. And we also know that Lilly for a long time at first did not like James and tried to avoid him because of how he treated Snape which shows that she thought what he was doing was wrong, even if it was not her he bullied.
Snape is complicated character, but I really don't think that Sirius' quote (yeah, it was Sirius', not Dumbledore's) about treating your equals and inferior ones does apply to James-Severus situation. Severus NEVER was inferior to James. They hated each other from the beginning because of that stupd house rivarly, it was something normal to them, insult people from Gryffindor or Slytherin before they were even sorted. First time they've met, it was only exchange of insults, and Snape did not left James' unanswered, he knew where he stands, what he believes, and didn't feel bad because some Gryffindor boy told him something rude. Snape was in Slug Club. James wasn't. Both had something they were good at, and were recognized at school, just in different fields. Yeah, quidditch was a big thing, but wasn't that Severus, who valued brain over muscles at age of 11? Also, like many pointed before, Severus often used curses against James and other Marauders, and let me remind you it was one boy against four. Later he had young Deatheaters on his side, but years before he was alone and still had a chance against them. His worst memory was what it was. Worst memory. Nothing worse happened to him concerning James. He was humiliated in front of girl he liked, it was bad, yes, but was it really worst that could happen to one? Not trying to defend bullies, but Harry never saw this particular memory again when he had a chance. Yes, James was wrong there, as well as Sirius, but I'm pretty sure memory about Mary MacDonald wasn't there without reason. Snape most probably gave Harry a context of the story, but Harry missed it. If you go back to OoP and read that scene right where it should be in DH, it looks a bit different. Harry don't know what expressions James and Sirius had when they've approached Snape that day, because he wasn't looking at them, but they weren't laughing. James said his words quietly, Sirius was watchful. Seeing this second time would show details Harry missed at first, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't just their everyday encounter. It was their way of saying "if dark arts is your friends' way of joking, we'll see how they like ours". Not mature, not fair, but quite possible if I might say. And again, Snape wasn't inferior to James. But Neville and many other students were to Snape, and that's the only way we could use Sirius' quote to define James and Severus. Not all we could say about them, of course.
Pretty much the entire story is based off Harry's POV. So what we see is what others choose to share with him. There are many things that happen, many conversations behind closed doors that we never know about. Bear in mind, no one wanted Harry to see James in a bad light, of any sort. Not even Severus. The moment Sirius and remus know harry saw this, they try to convince him this wasn't normal behavior. They both know that scene was as bad as Harry described. Take the memory of a random prank(like covering someone in slime). Any of these four is going to focus on the planning, execution and, maybe, them laughing about it afterwards. Take that same memory, from the one pranked, and the focus will be in different areas. In this case, the execution, the probable laughter, and the aftermath(getting the slime off + crying/rage). Our own opinion on this prank is going to be different depending on which memory we have access to, and our own lives' experience.
Lol Snape is the Jeepers Creepers and Luna is just what he wears on Saturdays :-p... HA! Snape even sounds like the serial killer from Silence of the Lambs(and that dude was making a people suit). Alright, next topic: Snape: A Serial Killer?
Pretty sure that the moment James turned around is when Lupin almost killed snape because of Sirius. He finally realized actions can have lasting consequences.
JKR loves copy pasting lives from one generation to the next, just as Harry had a very similar upbringing to Voldemort, in order to show how very similar people can end up very different by making choices.
It's always bugged me that Dumbledore named James Potter Head Boy *even though he had a long history of bullying other students*. As explained on the Harry Potter Wikia, a Head Boy/Girl needs to have "...an honest, good, and hard-working personality..." which you think would exclude bullies. Yes, I know that James supposedly stopped bullying other students in his 6th year (at least in public), but one year of reform shouldn't be enough to proclaim him a moral exemplar for the entire school. What kind of message does that send to all the other students? That bullying is okay, as long as your victims are Slytherins? What kind of message does that send to Snape and the other victims? That they don't matter as much as the wealthy Quidditch star? That if your parents are political allies of the headmaster, you can get away with anything? You have to wonder how many Slytherins and other Pureblood students were driven into Voldemort's arms by this. Seriously, it would make a great political rallying point. "See? The existing power structure is rigged against us. That's why we need to undermine the current Ministry of Magic and take over!" Nonsense, of course, but it might sway embittered adolescents who were previously on the fence.
Also I think that Dumbledore wanted James to learn about responsabilities, he thought he could become better. But True, Dumbledore being a Griffindor himself maybe he thought that James would keep an eye on the Slytherins for him. Just remember that Dumbledore knew that Voldemort was already up to something, so he needed someone to check on his potential adversaries at school. Possible that in fact both factions radicalized themselves at the same time with their respective attitudes towards eachother. I don't think that Dumbledore wanted to try to prevent a war since he already knew it was coming. In that case, as the Romans would say, "Si vis pacem, para bellum", If you seek peace, prepare for war. Even in the second war, McGonagall never offered the Slytherins a chance to participate to the battle against Voldemort, knowing they would side with him, she told Filtch to send them to the dungeons.
Ive always disliked James and I never will like him. Also with lily, I understand severus called her a mudblood but they've been friends since before Hogwarts. Severus was also being bullied by the maradures. She's a hypocrite. I understand Snape went down s dark path but I just think lily and has father was the tip of the iceberg. While I'm not justifying snapes actions towards harry, I'm just saying that the potters are terrible people. While james has wised up he was still a bully. He will always have bullying tendencies.
@@axnne7152 Wow, so no one can EVER change from when they were a child? Sorry, I disagree. The Potters were the bravest and the best and Snape bullied just as much as he was bullied - according to Lupin he was always hexing people - only Snape never grew up. The only reason he worked for Dumbledore is that he wanted revenge against Voldemort - not for any higher or better purpose. Pure selfishness. Snape freely CHOSE to side with the Purebloods and with Dark Magic and ended up killing his friendship with Lily - James was not responsible for that. Snape also decided to become a death eater when the so-called "bully" James put his life on the line by becoming a member of the Order. Snape happily reported the prophecy to Voldemort, knowing full well that a baby was going to die - he only got upset when he found out it was Lily's baby. What a hero! Harry was much, much too kind to Snape. Snape was not brave, not good, not actually in love - just obsessed, bullying, and juvenile right up until the end - unlike James who actually became a man.
I don't even care about the clickbait -- and it's pretty justified in the content of the video. But in a lot of ways I think Snape is more likely to be a parallel to Draco. Harry and Draco are James and Severus but in reverse. In this case, Draco is the one from a well-known, well-to-do family just like James (obviously Harry is, too, but he doesn't really operate with that mindset being raised by the Dursleys, of course) and he lets the prestige of that and having his own posse of friends get to his head, allowing him to act above everyone at school. Harry is the outsider like Severus in that he never feels like he belongs with others because of the stigma and burden of his name.
I think both are true. Good literature always has layers and depths of possible analysis. The correlation you mentioned is one that most readers probably come to when reading through the books, but the one the Jay mentioned is less obvious but still rings pretty true.
I prefer Snape being a parallel to Draco like you say, even though you definitely can also appreciate the parallels between him and Luna like he pointed out in the video. I actually prefer in this context that Luna is the difference between the generations and the reason the parallel's to the marauders in this generation were able to be the best version of themselves maybe even including to a certain extent Ginny and why Harry treated Draco in a way that he ended up being better than Snape
I don't think it is. I do think it's Luna and Severus. Both were the bullied outcasts but while Severus took the bullying to heart Luna never did. Severus hated his tormentors and started to imitate them while Luna just kept doing her own thing. The result being that at the end Luna's one friend Ginny had expanded to a large group while with Severus' malice he drove the one person away who he really cared about and he was left with token friends who he didn't care about.
While I agree that the ones who chose are the closest pairings, I think that you should consider the vastly different backgrounds they had. I mean just compare Luna and Snape's home life Luna has a loving father her mother died when she was young yes, but she still had a loving father. Snape however had an abusive father and even though he still had a mother, she was abused as well. So while Luna had a loving atmosphere as she was raised, Snape did not, not even close. I'm not sure if that made any sense, but hopefully it did makesome sense. lol
Exactly, he just had such a miserable existence it's no wonder he ended up the way he did. It's something echoed all too often in the real world. A child is bullied at school, abused at home and feels utterly powerless, so they join a gang of bigger badder bullies to feel safe. I was bullied horribly at school and I'm still dealing with the issues that caused me 17 years later, but at least I felt safe at home. I dread to think how things would have turned out for me if that wasn't the case.
Exactly, I was reading the comments to decide if I should write what you just did, thank you. Although I agree with the parallel, the way he presented it is very unfair to Snape, who was a victim of a lot of abuse in his childhood. Luna went through bullying too, but she had a support system, she had a loving father and eventually found a group of friends that accepted her. Snape, on the other hand, had no support whatsoever, he was abused both at home and at school and the ONLY friend he had was Lily, who he ended up losing. So in the end it was with the Death Eaters that he found something resembling of acceptance. The fair parallel between them is not "Luna is who Snape could have been if he just could let things go", like, really? Congrats on blaming the victim there. The fair parallel is "Luna is who Snape could have been if he had a better support system".
@@dandaramrs agreed. I mean, they do sort of nod to Snape's support system (or lack thereof) by mentioning his relationship with Lily and that Lily *tried* to provide the same kind of support system that Ginny gave Luna. But I've been the one-man support system for someone in an awful situation before and it's not sustainable. It isn't necessarily *fair* to say that the person receiving the admittedly inadequate one-man support "pushed them away", but that is sort of what caregiver burn out looks like from the outside. That could be why they phrased it the way they did. I have a lot of sympathy for Snape. I don't condone how he treats Harry, but it isn't surprising that he turned out so unbalanced.
@@zat1245 If you mean that bullying is not something that can be completely dealt with so we must learn to accept and rise above it and never let it define us, I 100% agree.
@@zat1245 i think it could be 2 examples how to deal with bullies. Some just grow stronger and bullies other as an act of revenge. The other are just grow stronger to slide aside, and find their own peace of mind.
Yeah i agree. The toxic way the two interacted with each other changed both. Snape and James hexed and "pranked" each other all the time, sort of similar to Malfoy and Harry, but times 10000 (another example of how harry handles things differently from his father). Snape chose to never move on and grow up from the experience, and he goes on to bully students when he is a teacher. Luna chose to ignore and move on, and was able to be happy and fulfilled in her life
Me at the beginning of the video: seems cool Me in the middle of the video: what’s the title again Me at the end of the video: ohh that makes sense now
Just saying guys, "why Luna is ACTUALLY Snape" and "why Luna is BASICALLY Snape" are two VERY different things haha EDIT after having watched: I don't think the Marauders generation comparison is supposed to be Luna. I think, pretty obviously, it's supposed to be Draco, given that he's Harry's foil, just like Snape and James. I think the comparison is more between how Harry treats his own enemy vs. how James does. The comparisons between Luna and Snape are pretty thin, and I don't think hold up much other than both being bullied. But there are loads of kids in the school who were bullied, including Harry himself.
Basically, Luna is a foil for Severus, neither of whom are "basic" is any sense, basically. Basilisk's are not "basic" either, basically the opposite of basic. (snerk)
That could explain why the cat was visible on the map (see: Gorman's theory video on why Fred and George (and HP) couldnt see Pettigrew on the map but Lupin could).
James isn't much better than Wormtail. The dude was an ego-maniac who enjoyed tormenting and humiliating other students. He's literally the embodiment of every stereotypical evil Slytherin.
Me before watching this: "Seems far fetched, but ok....." Me after watching this: "That is it! Luna is Snape and Snape is Luna! They are one! Snape is Luna's real dad!"
In my experience (former victim of bullying), the victims of bullies either become bullies themselves or become defenders. I think that Snape just could not let go of the memories of James' bullying. I became an activist/defender because of my bullying. Snape sort of went the other way.
As a former victim of bullying the victims of bullies either become bullies themselves, defenders, or me, someone who thinks people care about their feelings too much
I was bullied, pretty badly actually, but purely non physical. Funny enough, I was actually so uncaring towards it, I can't even remember HOW I was bullied, just that I was. My Mom remembers me coming home really upset over it, but now I couldn't care less The perks of weak memory I guess.
@Peggy Knecht , You're a total Luna Lovegood. That's what people should do. Not let other people's insults hurt them and define their character, but stand up for themselves with confidence and help other bullied people stand up.
For Ginny and lily you could say that Ginny being out spoken and having confidence is an improvement on lily who stood by and said nothing of the others faults.
Little bit disappointed that this wasn't literal. Like, I was thinking you had some crazy convoluted theory about how the little girl named Luna was actually Snape in disguise the entire time and everything she ever said and did all tied into his secret endgame with Dumbledore and Voldemort. 🤣
6;52 I think Hermione is more like Lily Hermione: griffindoor muggleborn the brightest witch of her age Lily: griffindoor muggleborn and “ exceedingly bright “ Ginny: griffindoor pure blood weaselet
Hermoine and Lily may both be bright but they serve VERY contrasting roles in the story. Lily was nice to the bullied kids, a very selfless and loving person, was never one of James' "crew" and ended up marrying him, just like Ginny and very much unlike Hermoine.
Pure bloods were made this way. Completely random and raw, arcane. And helga is related to pastry man of FB films. Also, Hermione truly reflects what Rewenna is all about. Now, Godric can be related to the Potters but not dirrectly. And i believe her diadem, knowing it would be stolen, she has the original elsewhere and perhaps appears to only her most gifted and trustworthy students during dreamtime. This way it remains as pure as the other realms of existence. Or simply a more suped up godric sword ability and sorcerers stone which can only be seen and achieved by people who dont want to do anything with it. She was a brilliant woman. Remember this. Her office is still a mystery and related to her moving stairs.
@@Makkaru112 Hermoine does not reflect what Rowena is all about. She's too close minded and doesn't have wits. She's book smarts and clever but that doesn't define what a Ravenclaw is. Luna defines what a Ravenclaw is all about. She thinks outside the box, has great wisdom, and values learning even if nargles are not real, she does not stop her search for these false creatures until she finds out herself that they do not exist based on her own experience and learning rather than saying they do not exist because they're not in any textbook as Hermoine claims.
I've been rewatching / reading the books, and just noticed something interesting about Neville. In the book, Dobby gets Gillyweed for Harry, whereas in the movie, Neville does it. Later, Snape accuses Harry of stealing Gillyweed and Polyjuice components... the implication being that Neville perpetrated a heist against the person / thing he feared most!
no neville wasnt afraid of snape cuz of gillyweed cuz neville didnt hear snape when he was accusing harry of stealing from his stores and the boggart was in the third book
You could have mention Dumbldore and Riddle Both extremely powerfull, tempted by dark arts and yet one casts away temptation the other buckles and is seduced by them
Yes I agree they're foils for each other but it's not part of this generation theory, because Dumbledore was the generation before Riddle. He was already a teacher when Riddle was at Hogwarts. Also neither of them were the Marauders' or Harry's generation.
Well, Voldemort is supposed to me the mirror of Harry technically, both orphans who didn't know they were wizards until school came calling. One incapable of love and self-sacrifice for others, and the other protected by it. Voldemort and his cronies went on the become the leader and Death Eaters, Harry the leader of Dumbledore's Army.
I love this theory and definitely see the connections between one generation and the next. Incidentally, speaking of parallels, Hermione easily could have become another Moaning Myrtle, killed in the bathroom by a monster (troll), while crying over something mean somebody said about her. My personal theory about Hermione is that she marries Ron because she falls in love with his family and can't stand to be without them. Unlike Harry, Hermione does not find herself at Hogwarts. She finds herself in her friendship with Harry and Ron. Before them, she's unable to make friends. That's not to say she isn't a strong character, it's just that she's incredibly lonely. Harry and Ron are close with the other Gryffindor boys, but Hermione never makes friends with the Gryffindor girls, other than Ginny. Hermione spends most of her summers with the Weasleys. I think she falls as much in love with their family as she does with Ron.
I want Marauders books. Because I really want to see how the heck Lily ends up with James. In detail. (And while a Snilly fan, I know they wouldn't have ended up together.)
2:01 Finally! Finally, someone understood! If not James's unnecessary bullying, Snape could end up totally distancing himself from the Dark Arts! And what was Lily doing when he was constantly humiliated by the Marauders? Nothing. Absolutely not a thing, although she knew James admires her and can do a lot for her. She tried to help Severus once, at the end of their fifth year. He called her a Mudblood, because well, he just got humiliated in front of many students, so it is normal that he reacted with anger. Boom! Friendship ended. Lily, instead of distancing herself from Severus should have try to end the conflict between him and the Marauders, tell James to stop and both of them to apologize. This could have a completely different ending.
bro what? he called her a slur when she tried to help him. A SLUR. that paired up with the fact that he was getting close with the death eater wannabe’s in his house is a perfectly valid reason to end a friendship.
Aside from the part where you argued Severus calling Lily a slur wasn't an inherent friendship ender, this is a spot on explanation of how Ginny is actually the better version of Lily and that Lily wasn't a special case - she had a fatal flaw just like the others from the Marauders' generation. Lily's fatal flaw was that, for whatever reason, she mainly kept her opinions to herself in school and didn't insert herself into situations she SHOULD have. Tbh, she barely has a personality, kind of like Ginny in the movies - we hear she was uncommonly kind, but we certainly don't see that from her consistently and we rarely get a glimpse into her perspective. But Ginny in the books is outspoken and calls out bs as she sees it. Book Ginny would never have quietly permitted someone to bully her friend, ESPECIALLY if the bully was someone she knew she could manipulate because they had a crush on her. And the funny thing is, it's the subtlest flaw of all of them, but it has the most wide-reaching impact. If Lily had been more like Ginny, not only would she have actively defended and protected Severus, resulting in him turning into a completely different kind of adult, but she also might have completely changed the Marauders' perspective on bullying, resulting in ALL of them changing and Peter especially turning into a completely different kind of adult.
@@Pr0fessorScience I think with the slur thing, especially since it was a very severe one, I get why they'd break off after that, but I don't think it inherently is something that would cause that. It certainly can be, tho. For the rest, that's a very astute look at this. Lily did not step up where she should have, wheras Ginny very much stepped up, and the consequences of both resulted in very significant changes to the long term of the friend group.
I'm pretty sure we have at least one more instance in Snape's memories of Lily basically refusing to give James or the Marauders the time of day because they were bullying, arrogant jerks. She calls James a "toerag" I think (which is a pretty hilarious put-down). I think she *did* in fact stick up for Snape and protect him from worse bullying for years before they had that falling out. Even in that scene, it seemed obvious that James started trying to walk back/hide what he was doing when Lily confronted him. But Snape had just had his own spell turned against him in the most humiliating way possible, and Lily saw it--which I think was probably unusual rather than the norm. He lashed out at her in humiliation and then deeply regretted it. I don't think Snape would have still considered Lily his true love and only real friend for 20+ years later if she hadn't been actively trying to protect him.
Good grief! When I read the title of this video, I thought, "These guys have finally crossed the line. They've abandoned logic and are producing click-bait shlock." Oh, boy, how wrong I was. Once again, they have a winner. Yes. It is true that Luna's character correlates to Snape's perfectly, but in reverse. She is what Snape could have been; SHOULD have been, but was not, because he simply never grew up. He remained that pathetic "bullied" teenager his entire life, the perpetual victim. Rather sad, considering his vast potential, most of which was destroyed -- by Snape himself. Very sad. Luna, although, yes, she shares the same dismal conditions in school as did Snape, incessant bullying; but because she has such great (though goofy) parents, she actually matured. I guess it just proves that it is NOT what happens to us that defines us; rather, it is how we deal with whatever happens to us, and that is a choice. As Dumbledore reminds Harry, that it isn't our actions that define us, but our choices. That is what either allows us to mature, Like Luna, or results in our remaining stagnant, like poor Snape. And this also helps explain why Harry, in the end, is so quick to forgive Snape all that horrific bullying to which he subjected Harry. Harry finally understood Snape's weaknesses, accepted them, and thusly accepted him -- uhm, after Snape died, of course. But hey! Better late than never! Another great video guys. Thank you kindly for the amazing job you do.
What Snape could have been was destroyed by all people around him. His irresponsible mum and dad, his teachers, Marauders and Voldemort , all of them destroyed him and he still remained good. Is that not inspiring? He was kind of deep and introvert and kept all his thoughts to himself and I get that you don't understand him. But please don't insult him. Had I been in his place, I would freak out but he did not and he remained sane and strong. Snape is such an inspiring character which people like you misunderstand so much.
@@achyuththouta6957 Yes you are right his character arc in the end of the series is truly magnificent and of course can not be over looked since he had such a major impact on Harry Potter and the story but the facts which Phillip is using are kinda intriguing in my opinion specially the way , the connection between him and Luna is discussed , even though none of this is approved by JK Rowling. But if we think of them as 2 similar characters comparing their abilities, their stories, their bullying, and their personalities it makes sense to me at least..but i'd take it with a pinch of salt :) a good try though by Carlin Brothers :D !
Also, to think that if Harry had seen the Pensieve memory earlier, or stepped out of it by himself, he could have apologized to Snape, instead of Snape flying off the handle and them never discussing it, until he was dying. Would have taken some of the suspense out of #6, I guess.
Luna is one of my favorite characters in HP , I wish so badly she had had a bigger role in the story so that we could have gotten to know more about her. Thanks for the Video!

Also, where Luna pairs with Snape, I will argue that Draco is very much more like Snape, as well as his opposer, James Potter. Just like James, Draco is very arrogant. He uses his wealth, looks, and family name to get what he desires. Unlike Severus and James, who hated each other from the moment they met, Draco actually twice extended his offer of friendship to Harry, and in his own way, he was kind to Harry when he first met him. After Harry refused his offer of friendship, he teased him relentlessly, almost as much as Harry's own father teased Draco's mentor. Where he is like Severus, he has the capacity for good, but he constantly answers to the call of darkness. He realized all too late the cost of darkness when those he loved were in danger, and just like Severus, he was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect them, to turn his back on everything he ever knew to do what he felt was right. Actually, in that same vein, Draco is a lot like Regulus.
Ace Coordinator Mary There's actually a complicated series of time traveling events and polyjuice potions that will turn Luna into Snape. You can read all about it over the next 20 tweets.
Also I have a theory, well a kinda theory, one of the reasons Snape hates all of the golden trio cuz hey all have resemblance of Lilly, Ron: red hair Harry: has her eyes and Hermione has her smarts
If you're a supreme double agent, you can't give your true intentions away. Snape, who willingly accepts the responsibility to protect Harry because of his undying love for Lily knew that other death eaters and double agents were constantly watching him, so he had to be a heel to Harry. However (GIANT COMMA) Severus routinely was behind the scenes protecting Harry, he even cryptically gave his condolences about Lily's death to Harry. He used how James treated him to goad Harry into hating him and to make him focus. Snape's unwillingness to "let things go" was how he had to act to fool everyone, and JK Rowling fooled every reader until the big reveal. Severus was one of, if not the best character of the series, IMO.
Thank you for this. Very few people actually seem to understand. Snape is by far my favorite character in the series. I even have "Always" tattooed on my arm
Are there people who DONT acknowledge snape as the best character? That must be 'fans' who only watched the movies. I still remember when book 7 had just came out. Everybody who already read that chapter about snapes memory was going nuts because they had to wait for the rest of the group to finsish reading it. People where whispering to each other, have you read that one chapter yet?
@@louiswouters71 Hey, I think Snape is one of the best, if not the best characters, and I have only seen the movies. I think part of that was Alan Rickman's portrayal of Snape. There are so many subtle moments and little nuances to the character. I love a complex character. As for him being mean to Harry, I think he had to in order to not raise suspicion. And of course he has to be mean to Ron, and Hermonie, because it just looks wrong to single one person out. Also, I think Snape just had this emotional wall up for most of his life. The only time he let it down a little was with Lily. I often wonder if Snape had somehow survived all that ,what he would have been like? I'm sure he still would have still been guarded to some extent, but would we see some softness appear from those harsh edges. I'm sure there would have been an interesting conversation between him and Harry after all the dust had settled.

I think the match between Peter and Neville perfectly symbolises this line from Dumbledore It’s not our abilities that show what we truely are. It is our choices.
"Tonks, is there a reason you're not doing that laundry?" "I think you'll find I _am_ doing that laundry, we have a child on the way!" "... Guys, Nymphadora's off her meds again!" "dOn'T cAlL mE nYmPhAdOrA!"
The parallels between Hermione and Lily are far closer than Ginny and Lily. Both muggle born both confident and intelligent, both owned cats, both had a middle initial J. Beyond being the love interest of a Potter, what else do Ginny and Lily really share.
godjahmit same that’s what I was thinking, but also that would mean Ginny would be Remus... and that doesn’t make much sense, I think that because Remus & Hermione make so much sense it has to be that way. I think also Lily was very good at hexes & so is Ginny, Lily was confident & popular, I believe, & smart like Ginny!
Celina Binkley Which is why I reject the idea that the two generations are 1 to 1 parallels. Harry is really an amalgamation of James and Lily. Physically, he is James’s doppelgänger. However, his ability to engender love from those around him is exactly like Lily. There is a saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul and Harry has his mother’s eyes.
Oh! I see! I really really like that. I think it could still fit, it would just require Ginny not specifically matching to someone in the previous generation! Actually I think that makes the theory that much better, because like J said, Lily didn’t have much that she needed to improve on- Harry got her good traits!! Thank you for sharing!
Being a muggle-born and owning a cat are not personality traits. On that basis, you could argue the Lily-Ginny pairing because they both have red hair. Canon-Ginny (verses wimpy Movie-Ginny) is a strong and passionate character who helps Harry and connects with him. It's interesting that the attraction between James and Lily is actually opposite to the attraction between Harry and Ginny, in that it's James that's in love with Lily at first sight, and Ginny that's in love with Harry at first sight, but in both cases, when they get together, you see two personalities that mesh very well and bring out the best in each other.
sheerayb If you read other replies, I am refuting the premise of this video in general. Do you believe Luna and Snape are in any way similar in personality? Or Ron and Sirius, a man who bullied a classmate for fun? The point I was making was that the pairings J made were tenuous at best.
Luna has always been my favourite character precisely because of how comfortable she is with being exactly who she is and how she simply doesn't allow anyone to interfere with that. She is a very strong role model in how she handles bullying, because at the end of the day, bullying can and will happen, but it is up to each one of us to not let it affect us and our lives.
So _that's_ why they're both my favourites. They're so different, but really they're two sides of the same coin - one was loved, and loved herself; the other was lonely and hated himself. Incredible characters.

True, as early as the first chapter together on the train she tried to,keep them on the right path
Maybe part of that is that she's autistic-coded, so she is less likely to intuit and capitulate to social convention, presenting itself through her as being willing to stand up to literally anyone.

Most likely you right now: 😑😒
You knew I was going to say that, don't be Riddikulus! Siriusly. 😋
I'm Neville going to stop with the puns, and if you ever thought I was, you were totally Ron.

J could say the most random thing and will justify it and make me believe it
True!
So true
This video and the video about why venom is a butterfly are great examples of why that is true.
that's called a dictatorship lol
He could say “why remus lupin actually has green hair” and i would actually believe it
In the video you talk about how we see James being a bully and hear about James being a good guy, something I've always wondered is how perspective affects memories in the Harry Potter series.

He also made Draco a head boy....

Luna is the good side in snape and drako is the bad side in him.
@@myfairlady343 I like that far more accurate.
Nicki Plague I get it
That's why Snivellus loved Lily

Yeah i agree. The toxic way the two interacted with each other changed both. I think the comparison is more between how Harry treats his own enemy vs. how James does. The comparisons between Luna and Snape are pretty thin, and I don't think hold up much other than both being bullied. But there are loads of kids in the school who were bullied, including Harry himself.

6;52 I think Hermione is more like Lily
Hermione: griffindoor muggleborn the brightest witch of her age
Lily: griffindoor muggleborn and “ exceedingly bright “
Ginny: griffindoor pure blood weaselet
Ginny and Lily both married and rode a Potter, became Potters, have red hair and have guy best friends.

@@melissaschwalk2576 you make a good point actually. Thx
This is actually a really nice thought!

Finally!
@@Pr0fessorScience Lily's flaw was that she loved bullies, as long as they didn't bully her.
@@Pr0fessorScience
I think with the slur thing, especially since it was a very severe one, I get why they'd break off after that, but I don't think it inherently is something that would cause that.

They've abandoned logic and are producing click-bait shlock."
Oh, boy, how wrong I was.

We, as a community, need to Tweet towards J.K.Rowling
that she should allow the Copyright for Harry Potter
to be losened a bit.
Cause we need some Sort of Reboot,
as almost all books are Lost in Adaptation.
The movies just do not represent the franchise right;
evidend by Dobby alone. If you know what i mean...
And even if we wouldnt need a reboot,
the creativity of the fans is still limited too much,
if you get what i mean!
Like it is, no one can give us what we need and/or want:
A lot people want a Series about the 4 Founders!
A lot understand how lost in Adaptation all the books
are and want all the Movies remade, maybe as a Cartoon,
maybe not.
And lastly, a lot of people love the idea
of a ‚All generation at once’-Cartoon, as
the AMV above shows. Isnt it epic?
These 3 things should ALL come to fruition,
in my opinion. Not to mention at least 1!!
Currently, the franchise is limited too much...
Fans should be allowed to make Animations
about Hogwarts and all ist generations and
Magical secrets.
If you agree the creativity is restrained too harshly,
tweet to Rowling! And also discuss!
And yeah, i know Rowling gets Tweets about a
whole other subject nowadays, but lets
get away from that for a second, to help
the Harry Potter Franchise, ok?!

Lupin and Hermione also have gentleness in common. You can see that directly in how they treat Neville.
JK Rowling be like "well ACTUALLY Luna is a Snape like.....for real. They're related by a distant relative. It's what I intended from the beginning."

There's actually a complicated series of time traveling events and polyjuice potions that will turn Luna into Snape. You can read all about it over the next 20 tweets.

ImranoTV HAHAHA
Also I have a theory, well a kinda theory, one of the reasons Snape hates all of the golden trio cuz hey all have resemblance of Lilly, Ron: red hair Harry: has her eyes and Hermione has her smarts
That's what I thought
@@louiswouters71 I hold Remus Lupin in higher esteem than Snape, but Snape is definitely up there.
Except he also bullies hermione and neville, without any reason.

The difference with Ginny and lily is Ginny always fancied Harry, where James always fancied lily
Every time mind = blown. Every episode. EVERY SINGLE TIME

So _that's_ why they're both my favourites. They're so different, but really they're two sides of the same coin - one was loved, and loved herself; the other was lonely and hated himself. Incredible characters.
