The pure blood angle is interesting because I recall hearing years ago that in media when a spell calls for "pure blood" laypeople think it means a virgin's blood, so they look for young children and such, but what it actually means is blood that has not been used in spell work before. This theory is so interesting! One thing I'm getting hung up on is that Herpo the Foul was the first to breed a basilisk and also a Parselmouth all the way back in Ancient Greece. He was born with the ability way before Slytherin's time. So, I think it seems more likely to me that Slytherin was born a Parselmouth and that his ability to talk to snakes may have been part of what brought him and his wife together since they had that common language rather than him learning Parselmouth from his wife. Also, the fact that Herpo the Foul bred the first basilisk makes me feel a bit hesitant about the basilisk being an option for a maledictus to transform into. It seems to me like it's a non-natural animal similar to a mule or a liger, but we don't really have any rules around what a maledictus can become so who can say! Thanks for always sharing such interesting theories and finding new ways to explore the wizarding world! 🤗
Herpo the Foul was also the first known Dark Wizard to create a Horcrux. What if Herpo was an Ancestor to Salazar Slytherin and he perhaps put his soul piece into his Basilisk & that process turned him into a Parselmouth? That's my theory, about how Herpo & Salazar's Line are the only known Parselmouths. Also about why Herpo & Voldy are so similar.
i though about herpo too but that fact only makes me believe less in this theory , which i was already inclined towards a less likely theory doesnt appeal as more probable to me as much as something that connects more to the fact of parselmouth being passes down by bloodline
Video idea- how did Voldemort exactly curse the defense against the dark arts position at Hogwarts. A position is not a real thing. Also how powerful was the curse that Dumbledore couldn't get rid of it for such a long time.
Nice… I’d assume it’s more like “I curse you” type of thing than an actual spell but I suppose it’s possible. If it is then I’m sure these guys could figure it out.
That's actually fair, if it was on Dumbledores ability to fill the position it should have ended at his death but it definitely continued making Snape have to flee, and the whatjamacallems being taken out of the rolls before the battle of hogwarts
I have a simple answer. He made the employment contract cursed. We know that books can curse the reader. “You’d be surprised,” said Ron, who was looking apprehensively at the book. “Some of the books the Ministry’s confiscated Dad’s told me - there was one that burned your eyes out. And everyone who read Sonnets of a Sorcerer spoke in limericks for the rest of their lives. And some old witch in Bath had a book that you could never stop reading! You just had to wander around with your nose in it, trying to do everything one-handed. And -” -chamber of secrets I have to assume that there is some sort of employment agreement/payroll contract thing for teachers. Maybe it is on the wizard version of that.
I like to think the curse was part of the Room of Requirement's defences of the diadem. I wonder if Riddle managed to get the room to become a highly secure magical vault for the diadem, and part of the defence was to get rid of the school's experts in DADA, who might work out how to destroy his horcrux. But Riddle didn't realise that the diadem would also appear in a room of hidden things, without its defences.
You could even add another level. Living hundreds of years wth limited contact to others could be a huge stressor for Mrs Slytherin. Her partner, kids and basically everyone who knew her as a person is long gone. Also there aren't many descendants left and those have adopted a hateful and dangerous ideology. In this scenario she can't resist orders in parceltongue, but is able to recognizes the events happening around her. After killing someone accidentally(Myrtle) and having to attack many muggleborns all of this could be enough for her. Tom commands her to fight Harry, but what if she didn't want to win? Even Harry's injury is more like collateral damage than a successfull attack.
i think one of the decendants long after slythein died went to the chamber found the wife but didnt know who she was and confunded the snake to obey his commands
I know you don’t exactly take requests, especially from non-patrons, but you should do a J vs Ben British or Wizard quiz. Where you’re given different names, foods, and customs and you have to determine whether it’s exclusive to the wizard world, or normal for British people. (Also you wouldn’t have to do a normal J vs Ben format)
I think they’ve mentioned this exact thing on the Through the Griffin Door podcast. While reading book 1 there were a lot of candies specifically mentioned and they couldn’t decide whether it was a wizard thing or just a British thing
To add to that theory with one of my own that I had for a long time, namely that the basilisk never wanted to kill any students!! Like isn't it suspitious that every person in Harrys years got so luckly to only ever be petrified? That no one every died even Filchs cat? And that nothing ever happend to the bodys after they were petrified? Like the snake could have eaten them or at least tried to kill them another way the via deadly that that hasn't worked for the last 4 times, like it has the most deadly venom and even without its big enough to swallow a person whole but everyone just made it out fine asside from being petrified??and that even after they were petrified the basilisk never like ate the body or something? (Seriously how and what does the giant snake even eat?) And isn't it odd that the only confiremed kill is Mirtel? which many readers have long suspected to have been an accident since it happened in the bathroom with the entrance to the chamber so she might just have been unlicky by walking in on Tom entering/exiting the chamber with the basilisk. But if the basislisk was human once that would explain her not only being oddly smart but also why she would want to protect the students even against Toms orders
Snake venom having anticoagulants in it is actually a thing in real snakes. While I agree that there's uniquely magical about Nagini, it's not the way her venom works.
@@captainspaulding5963 it's just movie stuff I think. I don't think they specified the species in the book. And in the movies a python just looks a whole lot better than any venomous snake, simply because of their size.
@shaunperron7080 Bro, I was actually thinking something similar to this, and even made a comment 😂 (I don’t mean to hop on your comment like that tho, rather want to contribute and build up a bit on this) Look: 4:50 Maybe her poison is similar to Sectumsempra, or an inspiration of it. Just a thought, btw love the channel 🫶🏼🙌🏼 Ps: sorry I had to edit, but it also feels worse knowing that the Poison Professor was killed by a poison that has the same effect as the curse that he invented.. Harry failed, but Nagini succeeded 😢
Had no idea about that but I feel there is still a difference. Feel like they should be able to magically remove or create a cure for such venoms if it was non-magical. The fact that no one at st Mungos can fix it seems to show that there is something magical about the venom
This theory is astounding! I also like to think that along with Harry slaying the basilisk with the sword, it not only shows the friendship between Godric and Salazar lasting all this time, but also that Godric is finally reuniting Salazar with his wife after such a long time of separation.
Jay! I forgot to ask this on the last episode of through the Griffin door. You mention Hedwig is a very special owl....what if hedwig is so smart and special because she is a maledictus????
Wasn’t Herpo the Foul the first parselmouth? The one who bred the first bassalisk and made the first horcrux. Maybe I’m wrong but I remember hearing that somewhere
4:52 If memory serves me right, a number of snake venoms actually do have this ability to varying strengths. The idea being it bites its victim and waits out their demise before helping themselves to a dead prey, rather than risking being killed.
I believe it is possible there have been other Parslemouths, but they just didn't make themselves well known. And post Voldemort, it would obviously be a sign of evil, even more reason to hide it. Plus, we don't know enough about other magical communities to know if Parsletongue is just rare in the English area. Maybe it's more common in other parts of the world, and we just don't know.
14:45 not to mention also horribly corrupted the locket, which if this theory is true, was a gift to Slytherin from his wife, which just adds a whole new layer to the whole Voldemort not comprehending love at all
Honestly, one of the best theories I've seen from you guys with each puzzle piece falling into place! I love the idea that Slytherin real intensions were skewed and lost to time because of a bunch of crazies wanting to use him as a symbol of power to back up their ideologies. Even the left overs of him that remained in the story make more sense in this theory!
I fricking LOVE this theory! It really repaints Salazar as a good, albeit flawed, person instead of this villain, and adds so much to the dynamic of the Founders. I would love to see this developped further, about how much love there was in his life and how he went through all of it. It does for an amazing story.
this is so cool! another layering could be the simple fact that Slytherin house is already tainted by misconceptions and gossip making it appear to be an evil house, it would be on brand for his message to be so badly misconstrued.
Yes, but pythons don't have venom. It's like a diricawl presenting itself as a dodo, or the real-life example of black leopards being identical to black jaguars. Identical on the surface.
@@Alejandroigarabide a black jaguar is literally genetically the same as a regular jaguar, and the SURFACE appearance is the only difference. The melanism that makes it black is the only thing setting them apart. In the case of Nagini having venom it would be more like milk snakes VS coral snakes; they look very similar, but a milk snake is harmless with no venom and a coral snake can kill you.
11:32 Kind of like how so many people trying to be edgy get tattoos of upside down crosses trying to mock Christianity, meanwhile they are actually rocking the Cross of Saint Peter who was so devout to Jesus, that when it came to his crucifixion, he requested to be crucified upside down as he did not believe he was worthy to be crucified the same way that his Lord was.
My personal headcanon, actually formed after listening to the podcast Through the Griffin Door, is as follows: Slytherin was married to a witch, who at some point after giving birth to their first son or daughter, is captured by muggle witch hunters, and sentenced to be burned at the stake. Unable to cast a simple flame freezing charm as there was no place to learn such a thing prior to Hogwarts, she is one of the few witches to truly succumb to the flames and perished. Thus after, Slytherin felt nothing but anguish fuled rage towards the muggles, and felt that the muggle-born witches and wizards coming to Hogwarts were no better than those misguided people who had killed his wife. May not be true, but I dig it. Also, a quick P.S: I've been loving the TTGD podcast you guys have been doing. Great content, and some awesome early theory development within each episode. A wonderful breakdown of the first couple of books so far, very much enjoyed. Alread on POA Chapter 1, Owl Post, and looking forward to more! Definitely recommend
@@Mary_Studios there is one thing from the video i do agree with. The parseltounge idea of it being so specific that it had to have been something in the salazar line in particular that caused it.
It sounds great! My twist on it would be it's Slytherin's daughter, and that the reason he left the other founders was to find a cure, but he could not. Maybe the founders agreed to make the "Disagreement" up to protect his daughter (or wife) from hate, as his sudden dissappearance from the school may make other's suspicous.
But what about Herpo the Foul who was a predecesor to Slytherin? He was a parselmouth and the first to make a Horcrux and the guy that created Basilisks in the first place with his experiments? They don't even know of he ever died, he could still be alive. Aaand he even accomplished Voldemort ultimate goal of being featured in the Chocolate Frog Card collection. He's basically a better version of Voldemort in every aspect. Maybe he could be tied into this theory but as it is this is a loose tread in it
I've always thought that Herpo the Foul might actually be a distant ancestor of Salazar Slytherin. Which would explain why Herpo & the Slytherin Line are the only known Parselmouths as well as the Parallels between Voldy & Herpo.
This literally changed my entire perception on Slytherin house. Misunderstanding everything SS stood for those that hated muggles flocked to Slytherin, a bunch became dark wizards, and that completely reshaped what it meant to be Slytherin over the centuries 🤯
Also it's fascinating that Nagini's venom was used. It keeps wounds open and yet helped Voldy create a body. What if it's related to the love and friendship Nagini had for Voldy?
For real. SCB quality of videos have recently gone down and has become too ridiculous to believe now. Plus all their videos can be summed up into their last 2 mins of the video which is really annoying imo
IDK about this one guys. I'm 99% sure that the basilisk is just a regular basilisk and he just had a regular wife/partner that wasn't talked about in the story. Not everything has to be connected to only stuff we know about. Plus most of the other founders have known descendants without any specific details about their partners.
@@Elholz it isn't even the case of not being in a set relationship. Quite literally there are children born every day because of a chance encounter between 2 consenting adults, that will never see each other again.

I love this concept, has so many cool ramifications. It also makes a lot of sense since people throughout history, often misunderstand the views and statements of others from long ago.
Nagini mentioned that purebloods hunt her kind for sport. So I find it highly unlikely that a pureblood maniac like Salazar slytherin, would have fallen in love or mated with a maledictus
The concept of pureblood would have been different in slytherin's time. Which, im not lobbying for or against, but your comment misses that point which was explained in the video
Also goes so well with your other theory that that the salizar statue in the chambed is actually salazar himself... trying to stay alive to be with his wife cursed to live so long. What a lo e story!
I am sorry but this is a bit too crazi lol (same as the diary not being a first horrocrox, Voldemort stopped wearing the ring after it became a horrocrox acording to dumbledore)
I've always believed that the basilisk didn't want to harm the students, so even though there was a giant murder snake in the castle, only one person ever died, which was an accident. So every time Tom told her to attack a student, she did so in a way they were petrified and not killed because the entirety of CoS seems like a HUGE coincidence.
I assumed that “keeps wounds open” referred to the anti-coagulant component of some snakes’ venom. (Anti-coagulant, meaning it prevents your blood from clotting, so you just keep bleeding.) A magical version of that would be horrible. What gets me is that Nagini looks like a boa constrictor or something related, and I didn’t think boas had venom? IDK. But Nagini was always a specific thing of her own, so it never really bothered me much, but I do still wonder…
This sounds extremely plausible and I would love to use this idea for a fanfic idea. I also found it odd every time I heard Gryffindor and Slytherin were best friends when they seemingly had complete opposite ideals, this idea would make sense.
in The Deathly Hollows, when Hermione gives Harry a hair cut.... this bothers me, because there's a spell or potion for everything, except hair cutting? but then Hermione says she used a bunch of charms on her hair for the TriWizard Ball? doesn't add up and it makes my head hurt.
I think there is not a spell/potion for exactly cutting hair or maybe Hermione doesn't know it because how on earth do wizards cut there hair but there are spells and potions for hair care like the potion harrys grandfather made which works like hair gel I think?
My best guess would be that different hairstyles require different charms, and since Hermione has never given herself short hair, she wouldn't know the requisite styling charms. Whilst on the run, she wouldn't be carrying something frivolous like a book of beauty spells, and so she finds herself having to cut Harry's hair manually.
Absolutely love your videos, especially the Harry Potter ones. Your theories are always so interesting. Love Ben and J. You are amazing as are your videos.
Well, yes, that is the normal way, but I think the point is if a maladictus can transform into a magical creature, what's to stop a basilisk as being the creature in question.

This theory is so underrated right now. It makes sense. I will be honest. I didn't think it would go anywhere. But was I wrong. It could be a great theory. And I'm all for it. Slytherin isn't a evil house. My brother is a slytherin. Great video brothers.😁
4:20 The anticoagulant feature of Nagini's venom isn't all that strange. Several snake species have venom that will prevent nlood clotting to spead along the victim's death. Though it does sound like it is meant to be abnormally strong in Nagini's case.

(Seriously how and what does the giant snake even eat?)
And isn't it odd that the only confiremed kill is Mirtel? which many readers have long suspected to have been an accident since it happened in the bathroom with the entrance to the chamber so she might just have been unlicky by walking in on Tom entering/exiting the chamber with the basilisk.
But if the basislisk was human once that would explain her not only being oddly smart but also why she would want to protect the students even against Toms orders
Slytherin building a safe space for his wife is actually so sweet of him
People can't become Basilisks... That's not how you make a Basilisk
Well, at least it’s somewhat romantic
Snake venom having anticoagulants in it is actually a thing in real snakes. While I agree that there's uniquely magical about Nagini, it's not the way her venom works.
Well, the fact that Nagini is a python AND is venomous is unique in general.
@@captainspaulding5963 it's just movie stuff I think. I don't think they specified the species in the book. And in the movies a python just looks a whole lot better than any venomous snake, simply because of their size.
@@einstijn138 I don't know about that.... a 30 foot CGI cobra would have looked amazing, and actually made sense to be venomous.
@shaunperron7080 Bro, I was actually thinking something similar to this, and even made a comment 😂 (I don’t mean to hop on your comment like that tho, rather want to contribute and build up a bit on this) Look:
4:50 Maybe her poison is similar to Sectumsempra, or an inspiration of it. Just a thought, btw love the channel 🫶🏼🙌🏼
Ps: sorry I had to edit, but it also feels worse knowing that the Poison Professor was killed by a poison that has the same effect as the curse that he invented..
I also like to think that along with Harry slaying the basilisk with the sword, it not only shows the friendship between Godric and Salazar lasting all this time, but also that Godric is finally reuniting Salazar with his wife after such a long time of separation.
i want a fan fiction where harry talks to mrs slytherin in the walls
Jay!
I forgot to ask this on the last episode of through the Griffin door.
You mention Hedwig is a very special owl....what if hedwig is so smart and special because she is a maledictus????
Oh my gosh, I can't believe that this isn't higher up! Maybe some old order of the Phoenix character? So she knows to protect Harry.
I wouldn't be surprised. She is abnormally intelligent.
@@wulaeofthetengu8336 owl arent dumb either . some normal animals pop up from time to time who are very intelligent
Wasn’t Herpo the Foul the first parselmouth? The one who bred the first bassalisk and made the first horcrux. Maybe I’m wrong but I remember hearing that somewhere
Yep, and I personally think because of that Herpo the Foul is a distant ancestor of Salazar Slytherin.
4:52 If memory serves me right, a number of snake venoms actually do have this ability to varying strengths. The idea being it bites its victim and waits out their demise before helping themselves to a dead prey, rather than risking being killed.
yeah its called an anticoagulant, even komodo venom does that if im not wrong
Wasnt Herpo the Foul a parsalmouth?
Based on the name alone, the answer is yes
We don't know if he could *speak* Parsletongue or if, like Newt, Ron, and Dumbledore, he could *understand* snakes and people simply equated the two.
I fricking LOVE this theory! It really repaints Salazar as a good, albeit flawed, person instead of this villain, and adds so much to the dynamic of the Founders.
I would love to see this developped further, about how much love there was in his life and how he went through all of it. It does for an amazing story.
So Tom riddle just visited his great great grandmother. How sweet of him!
this is so cool!
another layering could be the simple fact that Slytherin house is already tainted by misconceptions and gossip making it appear to be an evil house, it would be on brand for his message to be so badly misconstrued.
Nagini in the movies presents as a reticulated python.
Yes, but pythons don't have venom. It's like a diricawl presenting itself as a dodo, or the real-life example of black leopards being identical to black jaguars. Identical on the surface.
@@Alejandroigarabide According to FB, a diricawl doesn't "present" as a dodo. It IS a dodo. Or rather, "dodo" was the muggle name for it.
@@Lordmewtwo151 Wow. That actually makes too much sense.
My personal headcanon, actually formed after listening to the podcast Through the Griffin Door, is as follows:
Slytherin was married to a witch, who at some point after giving birth to their first son or daughter, is captured by muggle witch hunters, and sentenced to be burned at the stake.
Also, a quick P.S:
I've been loving the TTGD podcast you guys have been doing.
Great content, and some awesome early theory development within each episode.
A wonderful breakdown of the first couple of books so far, very much enjoyed.
Alread on POA Chapter 1, Owl Post, and looking forward to more!
Definitely recommend
Yeah I liked that theory a lot better than this one.
@@Mary_Studios there is one thing from the video i do agree with. The parseltounge idea of it being so specific that it had to have been something in the salazar line in particular that caused it.
@@tolkienism3806 Yeah it's defently odd that only his desendants seem to have that power.
Missed opportunity to say that because Tom Riddle is Slytherin's descendant,Slytherin would have had to Asalt Sired an heir
Is she the one that founded wizarding school in America ?
@@DeepakKumar-fi4os yeah,she's a descendant of Slytherin
The 'stache is both glorious and creepy. I love it!
That's a good theory ❤
This is such a wild theory but i do love how the context of the original beliefs is lost and it’s totally different
Misunderstanding everything SS stood for those that hated muggles flocked to Slytherin, a bunch became dark wizards, and that completely reshaped what it meant to be Slytherin over the centuries 🤯
the fidelius charm on the Chamber is brilliant. and fits so well with the locket passing on the location

This! 🔥🔥🔥 that mustache has to go 😂
The clip of the locket opening to Jay saying "duh" was PERFECT.
You guys should just make a founder series 🍿🎬
Also it's fascinating that Nagini's venom was used. It keeps wounds open and yet helped Voldy create a body. What if it's related to the love and friendship Nagini had for Voldy?
If it was animal husbandry, petrifying people is the LEAST worst thing Salazar has done......
Ooh, a whole new meaning to husbandry. Brrr.
I am here for the Salazar Recontextualization into a good but misunderstood wizard.
The stache looks SO GOOD
Imagine Salazar seeing what they are doing in his name and just being dumbstruck.

IDK about this one guys. I'm 99% sure that the basilisk is just a regular basilisk and he just had a regular wife/partner that wasn't talked about in the story. Not everything has to be connected to only stuff we know about. Plus most of the other founders have known descendants without any specific details about their partners.
And not everyone needs to be in a relationship, either ;)
@@captainspaulding5963 yeah, but its kinda necessary to keep the bloodline going
@@satan3862 They probably meant that you don't have to be in a set relationship, like a marriage, to have kids.
@@satan3862 no, no it isn't. In the slightest.... you 1000000000% don't need to be in a relationship to have a child.
@@Elholz it isn't even the case of not being in a set relationship. Quite literally there are children born every day because of a chance encounter between 2 consenting adults, that will never see each other again.

Jay's Ted Lasso cosplay is on point
2:13 it does makes sense
I love this concept, has so many cool ramifications. It also makes a lot of sense since people throughout history, often misunderstand the views and statements of others from long ago.
Nagini mentioned that purebloods hunt her kind for sport. So I find it highly unlikely that a pureblood maniac like Salazar slytherin, would have fallen in love or mated with a maledictus
The concept of pureblood would have been different in slytherin's time. Which, im not lobbying for or against, but your comment misses that point which was explained in the video
Wow Jay! That mustache is really mustaching! 💪🏻
The Mustache is great ❤❤❤❤
Me at the beginning of every theory video: there's no way that's true
Me at the end: where did I put my tinfoil?
HEY BROTHER!
This is the best theory I've heard in a long time. Well done!
So basically, you’re saying Helga Hufflepuff became a basilisk
You ship Helga and Sal?!
Yea
@@SuperCarlinBrothersthank you for the heart
Isnt a basilisk the egg of a serpent or toad that has been hatched/incubated by a cockerel
Correct!
No you are misremembering, it's the Egg of a Chicken hatched under a Toad.
You are blowing my mind right now. (Also love the mustache).
HEEEYYYYYYY BROTHER! ❤
Hey!
I haven’t even started but I know it will be a good video!!!!
This one really felt good!
Plot twist: the locket was actually instructions so his descendants could go visit grandma.
This sounds extremely plausible and I would love to use this idea for a fanfic idea. I also found it odd every time I heard Gryffindor and Slytherin were best friends when they seemingly had complete opposite ideals, this idea would make sense.
Omg! This has to be my most favorite theory ever!!!! And it makes so much more sense why the other founders were so chill about it! 😻💚
in The Deathly Hollows, when Hermione gives Harry a hair cut.... this bothers me, because there's a spell or potion for everything, except hair cutting? but then Hermione says she used a bunch of charms on her hair for the TriWizard Ball? doesn't add up and it makes my head hurt.
Just because you can, doesn't mean that you always have to.
I always assumed it was out of boredom. There can't be a lot to do while on the run and stumped looking for horcrux leads.
Maybe it's because they both grew up as muggles?
Absolutely love your videos, especially the Harry Potter ones. Your theories are always so interesting. Love Ben and J. You are amazing as are your videos.
Um.....before I start......doesn't the page Hermione ripped from the book tell how a basilisk is created? Hatched from a chicken egg, under a toad.
Well, yes, that is the normal way, but I think the point is if a maladictus can transform into a magical creature, what's to stop a basilisk as being the creature in question.
Think this would have been better if his mother was a snake and that’s why he can speak to snakes.
That is a Super Mario level mustache. Bravo Bravo

This theory is so underrated right now. It makes sense. I will be honest. I didn't think it would go anywhere. But was I wrong. It could be a great theory. And I'm all for it. Slytherin is not a bad house. Just some people. And people in other houses are also evil. But that is most of the time overlooked. Gryffindor I heard stole the sword from the Goblins. Slytherin isn't a evil house. My brother is a slytherin. Great video brothers.😁
This is one of my favorite videos. Honestly a fire theory!
Wait, hold on. Let him cook!
4:20 The anticoagulant feature of Nagini's venom isn't all that strange. Several snake species have venom that will prevent nlood clotting to spead along the victim's death. Though it does sound like it is meant to be abnormally strong in Nagini's case.
Let's gooo!!
I love this one! It makes the whole story line way better is so many ways!
