The reason we Colombians have a military post on Malpelo is first of all, it is Colombian territory but more recently we have Chinese fishing trawlers in our waters decimating the shark population. Best of luck on your journey.
Almost went there with my uncle. He took me and my cousin on a military boat when we were 8-9 to the pacific, we were scheduled to go to malpelo but plans changed. Wish I had seen it... FYI due to problems with other countries trying to take over territory, colombia maintains a permanent little outpost on every little island they own. This happens in the caribbean side as well.
Theres also the illegal over fishing fleets from the other side of the Pacific .. that need monitoring. 👍🏼🧙🏻♂️🇬🇧 Many miles out into the Adlantic Britain holds soverenty over a small rocky peak called Rockwall ... but its impossible to inhabit it, just it extends the economic territorial zone by the extra 200 miles radius. 🧙🏻♂️
Couldn't agree with you more. Teaching our kids fish doesn't come from a packet and how to feed themselves is life 101 and is always overlooked or ignored by modern city folk. Well done and thank you for sharing your lives with us. Can't wait to see you out there one day.
Possibly one of your best episodes (I've seen them all). Your dialogue about harvesting the fish with your tiny tots was a bit odd at first, and then I got it. My wife actually said...."Canadians Rock!". A lot of honesty and shy on the BS.
I spent 5 years at the Rock as a diving expedition ship captain. We used to call it Mordor like from Lord of the Rings. Weather get wild there sometimes.
Hi guys , just came across your channel recently and absolutely loving it, thankyou.. watching from N.Ireland , what a beautiful experience you are all having , safe travels ❤🇮🇪
Malpelo has some of the very best diving in the Pacific. Along with Cocos and the Galapagos this is part of a superhighway traveled by large schools of scalloped hammerheads...
Love, love, love these out of the way area's, there is such a feeling of mystery and a feeling of being somewhere where it might not be ok to be, but then here comes the park ranger dude in his boat to say welcome, yes, you can snorkel but watch out for the big sharks and as you mention that, here comes the supersized dolphins. Yes, everything's bigger in Malpelo!!! Thank you so much for taking us along for the ride!
Malpedo Island, home to a huge colony of Nazca boobies, three species of lizards, one unique species of land crabs and the waters around it are very popular with numerous species of fish (hammerhead sharks in particular who call this place home), It is a great diving spot.
I have been to Malpelo !! I Did an underwater documentary for the Columbian Government on an expedition there years ago for a week...it is certainly out in the middle of nowhere !!!. Glad you were able to see it which is very special and yes, they have some very, very big sharks there :-)
And yes... there are "big" sharks... Silkies are small, however they do school at Malpelo. The big sharks include the occasional Tiger, large Galapagos sharks, and a few other types... the silkies and the Galapagos are the "curious" ones...
Ashley as a 50yr woman who grew up without social media. I appreciate what you did in this video for Willa. One day, she will thank you! I'm glad you guys are safely traveling the Pacific Ocean 🩷 safe sailing!
fascinating watching you preparing that small Tuna for dinner. Your young guy was totally immersed in the whole process. dinner never tasted any better . Oranges direct off the tree have a more wholesome flavor to the supermarket versions .
seeing the size comparison of the building on the island rock indicated how big the rock was .Those guy,s in the rib seemed happy to meet up ..for a chat .
9:04 its good you switched over to smaller hooks for the Eccosystem too. Alot of people dont understand that you actually want the smaller fish, the big ones are the ones spawning eggs after all... not to mention if you fish out the larger ones you are killing the ones with the genes to grow large.
Love you guys! I'm with Ashley. We may not be on the menu for large sharks, but if they get curious and take a nibble they can cause a lot of damage. Better to not risk it. Safe travels. ❤

Parlay episode today had great whites... left a bite mark on his boat. After seeing that, I agree with Ash about getting in the water with big sharks. Nice sized tuna! I wouldn't mind seeing another episode about your fishing gear. In fact I'd like that very much if you include things like how you secure the handlines. I was a bit confused today about how it appeared you caught the tuna on a hand line, then reeled it in using rod&reel. how does that happen???

Interesting you say that. I thought it was very weird. Like it was sexualising a toddler.
I also thought it was a bit surprising but I think they're just covering all their bases. Some people might care. They probably don't.

15:15 AIS signals are transmitted and received via VHF, which is pretty much line-of-sight. That's why she's not showing on your AIS equipment.

I learned from Ben, to get softer hooks that'll bend if what's ever on the line is too big. Definitely want to do that. The other issue, especially with apex predators like tuna, is the bigger and older they are, the more fish they've consumed, the greater the concentration of mercury and other toxins. So a good plan for frequent fish consumption is to seek smaller fish. And smaller lures.
