You can spend a fortune on plastic surgery, but you'd still be ugly from the inside. I'd take the week long trip and make the best of it, travelling to as many interesting (not exotic, per say) places as possible and capture those moments. You do not need expensive equipment to tell a story, and as such the $1000 camera would suit me best (currently rocking the Nikon D5100 - cheap, but gets the picture snapped - would obviously love an upgrade + some new glass but that's besides the point).
Wrong answer. You should’ve said two cameras that are over my budget but what can I do to afford the one. Not automatically go to the comfortable response and say can’t afford it. No! How can I go about and save my money or make more money to afford either or. Don’t shut off your brain as soon as something feels out of reach.
I just bought an 80d this Xmas 2017. I’m still getting to learn all about it. I am coming from a t3i. In my opinion, anyone can be a photographer, so long you know basics and shoot raw with a good computer for post production. The new gadgets will make your life easier providing a better pre production product. Be creative, don’t get discourage because you have a cheaper camera. Go out and shoot. I am discovering this universe a little bit more everyday day and it’s so amazing!
jami ross I use a cannon T6. I love this camera because I learned everything about photography with it, just started shooting cinematic short films (No sound of course) I've had this camera for over a year and now it’s time to upgrade prolly to the 80D so I can start a small business. Cliff notes:Buy the camera
Get a Panasonic g7 for that cfast money and be happy. Or invest a Lil bit more and get a Sony a6300. U get 120fps 1080p and 4k 30. Check out my channel if u have a Lotta spare time. Trying my hand at travel vlogs
The way Canon names their products is rather counter intuitive. one digit tends to be the top tier camera for a given use case, two digits tends to be a mid-tier, and three is typically a starter cam.
This was awesome! Never considered that you would lose less quality while dialing up ISO with the more expensive cameras compared to the cheaper ones. Game changer for me. Thanks!
You are here either because his videos are awesome or because you are considering getting in to photography. Or just because it’s important see what goes on in this wonderful creative world! :-)
Bought an 80d an year ago and fell in love with it instantly. A year since then and I'm still loving it. Won't be upgrading to full frame for next 2 or 3 years.
I am shooting with the 80D for three years now and I am really happy with this awesome camera. I can always rely on it. With this camera I have also shooted on rainy days, during snowfall etc and never got any problems. If you have enough money left for it, the 80D is perfect to start with in photography, cause this is exactly what I did. Well I had a Kodak Compactcamera with 5 M before (No M-Mode, no manual focus, no different lenses)... Don't know if this really counts. ^^ So yeah: The 80D is great! Go for it. :)
Here's the thing... The $8K rig footage looks better IMO because of the shoot (darker, lighting, etc...), but I'm sure side by side, the $1K rig would just about "as" good and you'd have to put the footage up next to each other on a split screen to be able to discern the differences. In the right hands, even a $500 DSLR would come close with it's video quality. That being said, there's a reason $8K cameras cost what they cost and IMHO, for the pro, they are definitely worth it. For us mere mortals, PFFFT! Give me the lowly T5i or even a T3i or a T7i (MMMM!) and I'm good. Great vid Peter. Thanks.
I like the sound you used when you showed us the 1d, cause you know, it doesnt only depict what a monster of a camera 1D is but it also shares the sound of our shaterred dreams of owning one.

It's just nice to know at least Peter McKinnon spoke about an 80d.😂 I thought in his world a camera like that doesn't exist, it's the "eos R's and the 1dx's" so I thought they'll never cross paths.
Just to clarify the sensor doesnt change the focal length of a lens it only changes the outcome. A 50mm lens is a 50mm lens whether it's on full frame, cropped sensor (aps-c), large format, etc.
Just want to say “you are good” really, high energy, entertaining while knowledgeable. I’ve been in this field for years and took a break, coming back in with all the new toys and improved gear. I know you are a Canon guy and I respect that. But can you please review some other camera brands? Or compare them with Canon. And what do you think about this new Sony hype?
Arindam Talukdar I tried the Sony alpha 7 II for a week. Usually I use a canon 70D. They don't even compare. The Sony camera is absolutely amazing. I would have switched cameras in a heartbeat, if I could have :D how the Sony camera shoots in low light is purely insane.
I'm not a Sony user but from what I hear they are making great gear, although the choice of lenses is not so great yet and their batteries die pretty fast.
Man this video needs a 2021 sequel. with the introduction of many new camera frames from different companies at that 1000 USD price tag i wonder what he would recommend now.
Great content man! I can always tell you put a lot of effort into making your videos. I hope within 2017 you get a million subs! Been subbed since 80k. Crazy

Peter McKinnon And what did you think of it? I am trying to decide between it and the 80D, and I'm leaning towards the M5 because of its faster burst rate for sports. But I'm worried about the form factor...
Gabriel Ludwick They don't offer nearly enough lenses/at a good price for the Ef-m mount in my opinion. I would say if you are looking to go mirrorless go Sony. The 80d is an amazing camera for the price. I used the 7d mk ii for a year and the 2 cameras are extremely similar (I needed the weather proofing for action sport photography). It's totally up to you, but I would say go Sony for mirrorless. They are killing the game with their cameras.
Watch some reviews. The M5 is nowhere near the 80D in real world performance. Them saying it's the mirrorless version of the 80D is mostly just marketing (from everything I've seen and read anyways). Haven't seen a review yet that praises the M5 over other mirrorless cameras in that price range either.
I use the canon t5i, good performance for the price and a great camera to learn on. But, you wont be able to get a "nice" lens with the body. I would recommend to start with a t5i or similar and use the kit lens for a while until you can afford a lens that will fit your shooting style. for an all around performer I would recommend the 24-105 f4 L. Roughly $1000 new, but it can be found in good condition used for $400-$600.
I think there should be a priority. The most important thing is picture quality. So I put sensor size, quality and pixel numbers in the first place. Second one is professional quality, so I put lense quality in the second place, such as bigger aperture size and wider local lengthy range and good stabilization ability. The last priorities are the rest parts, such as focus points, foldable display, touch display, battery size, portability, Wi-Fi support, and so many on.
wel, for video i recomend a6300/a6500 because shoots 4k, 1080p at 120fps, alredy come with zebra and focus picking features, and you can use autofocus based on face, its real fast an praticle when you record persons or yourself. But for photography the cannon has better handle and paralel lenses are decent and cheap, but the sony gives you real good quality photos too.
You sold me on the Canon 80D. It'd be nice to have the bells and whistles of an 8000 dollar camera, but I just need something that I can vlog at night with. Right now I'm using a Canon Vixia HF M50 and it does a great job, but the night footage is grainy and I wanted to fix that problem. I bought a Powershot SX730 HS without thinking too much into it because there's not a lot of reviews on it, but I really appreciated this video and now I know what direction I need to go. Thanks Peter, I've learned so much from you to help my channel.
A 6D body with a 50mm f/1.8 STM. Can probably get this setup for around $1,250. Kind of wish I got this setup over my 70D w/18-135mm STM a few years ago.
I would go for a divorce, Vanessa. If I had to choose between a camera and my wife, I'd go for the camera. Simple as that - if ones goes down to compare his partner to a gadget, it should be a messed up relationship. But being a husband and buying an $8k camera, instead of taking care of my family - it won't happen.
Very good review. I just got the Canon 80d with a 10-18 mm for vlogging and I'm so happy with the results. My videos are looking so much better. I really don't care to much about the 4k at this moment because I'm having such a hard time editing 4k in premiere pro anyways. The only complaint that I have with the 80D is that I really wish they added 120fps, That would have done it for me! but I'm still happy with the 80D. He is so correct. It's a really good camera for the price tag. Canon had people like me in mind when making this camera.
I saw the difference between 80D and 1D. Happy with my 80D it rocks. As a favor, try to allow your ads to materialize at a better time. Especially when making an inpact statement. :)
Absolutely. I use the 24-105 f/4 L on my 80D and it's a fantastic combination. High quality glass is never a bad investment and will make more of a difference in the sharpness and clarity of your photos than a camera body ever will.
dallatorretdu I have a few L series primes on my list. 100mm Macro, 50mm 1.2, and 35mm 1.4 are the short list. But I love the versatility of the zooms though.
Thank you for not making one of those dumb "price doesn't matter" videos like other youtubers, because it ABSOLUTELY does! there's a reason people pay more to upgrade!
I'd go with the t7i that just came out. it can shoot 60fps at 1080 unlike the t6i. so can the 80d but like he said, you lose some ground with the wide angles with the 80d and most youtubers shoot with a wide angle lense
The point of it is that there is a huge difference but only if you need it. Notice how fast it takes pictures I think he said like 15 pictures per second that's perfect for sports photography. Also there's a better censor which will be good in low light. But for the most parts the $1000 camera should do just fine as a matter of fact I shoot professionally with a rebel t3 with 50mm 1.8 about $350 with a kit lensi and $400 with the 50mm and I achieve some awesome results
No, they are both weather sealed, which is one of the reasons why the 80D is such a steal. And when I say weathersealed, I mean canon style weathersealed, not like Sony "weatherseals" which seem to have some problems on the underside of the cam. Canon weather sealing and durability to the test: ruclips.net/video/RCT-YMgjm9k/видео.html
What do you think of the Nikon D3200. I don't think they sell it anymore. I had it for so long, I stopped taking photos about 2 years ago. But watching your channel made me want to start again.
Casey Sheppard Yea, that's true. Surprisingly that smaller, "cheaper" OSMO+ can shoot 120fps on 1080p. Not asking much... I think Canon should update its firmware for us so we could shoot those slowmo on 1080p.
lmao, even 6k on iphone will not make a lot of difference, the colour depth, low light capability and dynamic range will not be able to keep up. that 4k on the spec sheet is only to justify the over $1k price for a phone
can you make a tutorial on the canon 80D please, thats what I own and am a complete noob and am not getting everything out of it. Like all the tricks and whatever you know that would help a noob. thanks
I dare anyone on here to tell me they've mastered EVERY ability of a 60D, no less an 80. Learn your basics first. You don't need everything shiny Canon serves up
To me, the 80D is best "bang for your buck" , like dont get me wrong the 1D is an absolute monster but to me its not worth 8,000 dollars, should be like 3,000 tops. The 1D is the camera you should only get if you have the money for it.
If you had to choose....8,000.00 Camera OR.. 1 Week anywhere you wanted to go in the world.. GO!
Peter McKinnon 1 week obviously because a luxurious camera doesn't mean anything without those beautiful subjects ( landscape)

What is the best frame i should interpret for a 60fps to get that smooth slow motion ?
In premiere pro
usually i use 50% that should 30fps
Shooting at 60fps and rendering in 30 or 24 will give you half speed slowmo, but if your camera can shoot in 120 it will be about 1/4 speed at 30 fps.
*If you right click your footage in the project bin select modify > interpret footage > select "assume this footage" and change it to 24.*
Also make sure your shutter speed is twice the frame rate when filming to get the best looking slow motion

I bought a Powershot SX730 HS without thinking too much into it because there's not a lot of reviews on it, but I really appreciated this video and now I know what direction I need to go. Thanks Peter, I've learned so much from you to help my channel.
can somebody tell me the name of the music at 8:54
Diamonds and Skies-Niklas Gustavsson
inspiretl how do u find it?
Nicolas Mesa Use Shazam app
chevrolet193 the shazam is not detect the song :/
John Cook that's like the background but I need the song with the voice
I want one. I cry lol. One day man, one day, it will happen.
Malachi Viloria yes bro one day and today my wish will be fullfill (77d) 😂😂
I put mine on a credit card paid it off in 5 months now it’s mine
There you go! That's the spirit! umm.. so... it's been 10 months now.. did you finally get one?
Same😭😂
Get some video gigs before even buying a camera, then you can buy any one you want 😉
What's the best middle class camera (around $1000) to take photos with in your opinion?
antonhaw Sony a6300
antonhaw Sony A7 with 24-70mm F3.5-5.5 Kit Lens for around £1000 (it's a full frame :))
antonhaw D5500, use the rest of the money for a good lens
Don't get a7 with kit lens...rather get a7 with 28mm f2 or t3i with sigma 18-35
A 6D body with a 50mm f/1.8 STM. Can probably get this setup for around $1,250. Kind of wish I got this setup over my 70D w/18-135mm STM a few years ago.
Well i have no problem paying for 8000 dollar câmera if it worth it bu I’m a beginner so I think I should pic 80d what do you thing?
5 Star Video ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
you are right
The camera you want vs the camera you can’t even imagine wanting
Hmmm $8k camera and a divorce or the $1k camera and stay married. I'll pick stay married with my $1k camera
why the divorce??
Tomas Longa I was being dramatic but hubby would be more than ANGRY 😡
the divorce is also an additional 15k
I would go for a divorce, Vanessa. If I had to choose between a camera and my wife, I'd go for the camera. Simple as that - if ones goes down to compare his partner to a gadget, it should be a messed up relationship.
But being a husband and buying an $8k camera, instead of taking care of my family - it won't happen.
Vanessa Williamson I like the way u think lol
Sweet, Peter! Dude! We are just starting to compare some cameras, and this really helped a ton! Thanks, Brother! - Brian (and Erin)
You are telling $800 for card and I can't even afford $800 for camera 😂
what lens is that on the 80d?
i think i cried when he was introducing the 1DX such a beauty
Hello Peter, I am starting to watch all your videos and learned some of your tutorials on how to take good pictures and filming.
Canon had people like me in mind when making this camera.
with how may frames did u film 0:48 ? 180fps? or just 60? or did u use twixtor on that part?
He films most of his stuff in 120fps on his 1D which is already 5 times slower than realtime in a 24fps video
Thats 120
I recommend trying something like 60fps and using optical flow at 25% speed with 60fps, I use that on my Panasonic G7 because I'm cheap
Which lens are you using on the 80D?
Is the kit lens (18-55mm IS STM) good for video making on the 750D?? (Damn Amazon..)
that kit lenses blow I have it on my 80d
I was wondering the same thing
I saw the difference between 80D and 1D. Happy with my 80D it rocks. As a favor, try to allow your ads to materialize at a better time. Especially when making an inpact statement. :)
Peter: 4k is a must have now in 2017
Also Peter: I shoot most of my b-roll in 120fps
Is it worth it to put a L series lens on an 80D?
$1,000 camera with a $1,000 lens since I don't $8,000 for the 1DMKII.
L lenses will look better even when shooting on an APSC. I recently bought a used 16-35 L for my 7D Mark II and it's amazing!
Absolutely. I use the 24-105 f/4 L on my 80D and it's a fantastic combination. High quality glass is never a bad investment and will make more of a difference in the sharpness and clarity of your photos than a camera body ever will.
Once I rented a 70-200L 2.8 to film a concert from a friend, it looked like I was using another camera!
Prime lenses anyone?
dallatorretdu I have a few L series primes on my list. 100mm Macro, 50mm 1.2, and 35mm 1.4 are the short list. But I love the versatility of the zooms though.
@Petermckinnon do comparison of canon 77D and 80 D for photography . please :)
Thank you for not making one of those dumb "price doesn't matter" videos like other youtubers, because it ABSOLUTELY does! there's a reason people pay more to upgrade!
Yo peter what's up! I need ur help. I have a cannon t5 for RUclips and was wondering what I should get a 80D or a t6i
Btw ur vids help me so much
I'd go with the t7i that just came out. it can shoot 60fps at 1080 unlike the t6i. so can the 80d but like he said, you lose some ground with the wide angles with the 80d and most youtubers shoot with a wide angle lense
@TheltzGambit With t7i you also lose wide angles, because it is also an APS-C sensor. The cheapest canon full frame is 6D.
I would say grab the 80d the autofocus is absolutely killer!
Just a dude look at panasonic g7. it is micro four thirds though. it does 4k also
I see a major difference but not at $7,000 difference to a guy like me.
You should apply to Team Overkill dude! I'm sure Jon would take you!!
Awesome video! I'm happy with my 80d's. Thank you my friend...keep up the great work!
That angels and airwaves on the background is
I didn't catch the part where the 7000 dollar difference came in.
It’s kinda waterproof idk
Clear The Air TV it's all about what you do with it.
Traumglanz yeah but 80d is not that good with AF especially if the image it id trying to focus on is not sufficiently contrasted...
How much would it be worth if those shelves in the background were level? Priceless. Great video! I'm still rocking my 60D.
What do you think of the Nikon D3200. I don't think they sell it anymore.
I had it for so long, I stopped taking photos about 2 years ago. But watching your channel made me want to start again.
What's the name of the song at 8:54?
Go get the app SoundHound (or Shazam). May your quest for tune knowledge be solved.
dosen't find anything
Found it... called Niklas Gustavsson - Cover Me on Epidemic Sound.
The lack of darude sandstorm in this thread is ... disturbing.
Johannes B are you stuck in 2010?
5:48 i love that sound
and i thought casey neistat had good stuff...
casey is a golden vlogger, odd his cameras though aren't insane!
You should look at the camera someone like Marques Brownlee uses.
google hasselblad and look at their prices
Casey is more about his content. He prefers lighter cameras and lenses.
I believe he uses one
Your ideas are always brilliant sir Peter, your insights are so practical that we can make use of it. Thank you so much.
I own a 6D, love it, just that hate that it records 60fps at 720p 😩
Elisha Batuncang Visuals I am the same with my 7D. 60fps at 720p can be limiting. IMO
I think many people have the same issue. including me :D
I have the same problem...
Casey Sheppard Yea, that's true. Surprisingly that smaller, "cheaper" OSMO+ can shoot 120fps on 1080p.
Not asking much... I think Canon should update its firmware for us so we could shoot those slowmo on 1080p.
What Around Me would you consider using Magic Lantern?
hi pete, when you switch camera, what lens is attached to the 80D?
I was wondering the same thing
Same
The camera 1080p is just onethousand times better then IPhone 4k
thats because the iphone has a tiny sensor compared to an apsc or full frame
1901Steini You don't say...
lmao, even 6k on iphone will not make a lot of difference, the colour depth, low light capability and dynamic range will not be able to keep up. that 4k on the spec sheet is only to justify the over $1k price for a phone
I just got the 80D!! i LOVE it!! Thanks for a great vid Pete!
can you make a tutorial on the canon 80D please, thats what I own and am a complete noob and am not getting everything out of it. Like all the tricks and whatever you know that would help a noob. thanks
@ If you're starting, you won't be able to afford to use film. I know you want the "Good ol' days" back, but this is 2018, get real.
I dare anyone on here to tell me they've mastered EVERY ability of a 60D, no less an 80. Learn your basics first. You don't need everything shiny Canon serves up
How blasphemously unAmerican!!
I admire your energy
He one cool dude. I hope be successful as him one day
Is it worth it to upgrade from a t5i to an 80D or just keep buying lenses until you can afford a full frame?
It's not the camera its the content and the person who is shooting stuff!
To me, the 80D is best "bang for your buck" , like dont get me wrong the 1D is an absolute monster but to me its not worth 8,000 dollars, should be like 3,000 tops. The 1D is the camera you should only get if you have the money for it.
Well im buying the 80d this week thx for the video ❤
I bought it and its really great
Why didn't you get 200D/SL2?
I can't decide if I want Samsung galaxy or an 80 d camera
@@jacklenetaylor6864 the phone ofc
Obviously things have changed since then and technology has improved, is there an updated version of this coming out anytime soon? 🤔
And here i am, saving enough to buy my first ever DSLR (200D) 😄
I just got the 200d. It's awesome. Just cos it's cheaper doesn't mean it's worse photo quality. Just the raw images are lovely.
Why am i watching this video? I can't get any of these.
To see the kind of stuff the 5th Avenue crowd buys for toys.
Same I just make videos on a cellphone...
GH5 4k60 and 1080p180 = 1999
Big Trillin Gh5 is killer. I imagine canon will fire back with the new 6d mk ii that will hopefully drop near August... maybe
Tyler Justice you're definitely right, but we can dream haha
but the auto-focus sucks.
bad autofocus tho
Just a dude No, they take 3 years like they did with the 5dM4
Got an 80d and was using the 10-18mm lens but traded that in for the 10-22mm and really happy with how much better the 10-22mm is
