You didn't get the point but I like where you coming from and if you truly are like that to your contractors you are doing great. However, a lot of people does not have the ability yet to demand a pay. So where and how will you establish your skills? As a freelancer myself, I don't hate the idea of working for free because I also went through with it.
I accepted free gig as a video editor when I'm still developing my skill and because of those free services I offered before I was able to make a good portfolio where I can demand a pay for my service, I can also show them my previous works and previous clients I worked with.
Again, when you are just starting, there's nothing wrong with working for free, hell, if Pete ask me to work with him for free I'll do it anytime of the day because the value I'm going to get from him is priceless.

I'm 61 and enjoy video editing. I had the great fortune of connecting with an actor who has been in some major programs and TV movies. She needed a show reel so I offered to take some scenes from the projects she was in and put together a reel for her to her specs. Now she has become a friend and it didn't cost either of us a cent.

Everyone has their own way of doing things.... What I love to do is "don't flex, don't show off, don't talk"... just stay quiet and let your own work show what you can do. I love to be silent and smile... never flex, never show off..... just show what you are capable of... I've been in photography business for over 20 years... it has never failed me... I've done lots of free work because I wanted to... and it is the best thing ever

I do concert photography, and I have a standard rate that I charge for my services. I work with two non-profit theatres in the area that I do not charge for my services, but I do get to see shows that I would have paid to see, the theatres and performers get photos they can use, and I regularly get more work as a result of the contacts I make working for free and the attribution that the theatres and the bands give me when they post my photos on their socials. A new venue opened recently, so I cold-called them and gave them my rate. It was a bit much for the owner, but we negotiated a deal for two shoots that has already led to additional gigs. I don't always work for free, but the Three Bs mentioned in this video are really important, so I don't mind doing it occasionally.

Setup is great! Personally, I found the depth and sense of seeing the studio in Matti's angle more interesting, but it needed a little more fill and a tad more separation. I can imagine practically, given it's a large space, it's more effort to clean up, turn all the practicles on, and have ready to go quickly.

I enjoyed listening to this explanation of the offering services for free. Recently at a gym where I'm a member, I spoke to the manager about my experience in the field of video production, a decade of buildining a media program, equipping a studio, designing that studio for a company I worked for. I had noted that they put out a lot of media/postings for promotional purposes and was looking for some work. Their production levels are basic, mobile phones are predominately used with basic editing and audio is all from the phones. So I offered pro bono to the manager and left it at that, he didn't commit to anything and all I can hope is that I've sown a seed for the future perhaps. I agree that services offered free creates good will and it comes back to you in many ways.
    Cheers

I love how he put it as the "three B's". My philosophy has been you should never work for free, but that doesn't always mean money. It can be about gaining experience, having an experience, making connections, supporting something you believe in, or a hundred other reasons. Money is great, but there are a lot of other ways to find value in a project as well.

I agree with you 1000%. I built my entire company off of starting off offering free service. It wasn’t exactly free, It was an investment. I compare it to the little samples of food that you get at Sam’s or Costco. (USA) the sample, wets your appetite, and next thing you know the full product is in your basket. I now have a significant Client base, repeat business, and consistent referrals. This is because I was willing to offer my service with no charge initially to get my company started.

Been a big advocate of this personal strategy over the years. Can be great to break into an area you are passionate about (because getting paid for what you love is just a little bit too lucky for most of us), have a professional relationship with someone you want to work with (bridge), or develop skills in a real way. You can usually do it on your own terms, so it can sit alongside other commitments and you never know what will come of it. It's a bit like playing the stock market, in terms of value returning that you can't really predict, but as you're doing something you love, if it does come back, it'll likely be aligned with your interests. Have worked with some great people, and even had some modest startup payouts unexpectantly, years after the event.

To expand on this concept. Do the gigs you don’t want to do. I owned my DJ company for 12 years. A few times a year some of my really good clients would ask me to do gigs that i absolutely wanted nothing to do with. Some of the times, they would be in a pinch and needed me asap. So I would do these gigs as favors for these guys not expecting anything in return. What that did in turn was get me tons of referrals from these people because they knew that I always took care of them and knew that I could almost always come through. When a customer feels that way toward you, they will tell
Everyone about you. When they feel the same way the feel about everyone else, they will never talk about you.

Leather - the outside | Rough out leather - underside of leather | Suede - the inside of leather if you were to tear a piece of leather in half
