You didn't get the point but I like where you coming from and if you truly are like that to your contractors you are doing great. Everyone has their own way of doing things.... What I love to do is "don't flex, don't show off, don't talk"... just stay quiet and let your own work show what you can do. I do concert photography, and I have a standard rate that I charge for my services. I work with two non-profit theatres in the area that I do not charge for my services, but I do get to see shows that I would have paid to see, the theatres and performers get photos they can use, and I regularly get more work as a result of the contacts I make working for free and the attribution that the theatres and the bands give me when they post my photos on their socials. A new venue opened recently, so I cold-called them and gave them my rate. It was a bit much for the owner, but we negotiated a deal for two shoots that has already led to additional gigs. I don't always work for free, but the Three Bs mentioned in this video are really important, so I don't mind doing it occasionally.

Setup is great! Personally, I found the depth and sense of seeing the studio in Matti's angle more interesting, but it needed a little more fill and a tad more separation. I can imagine practically, given it's a large space, it's more effort to clean up, turn all the practicles on, and have ready to go quickly.
I enjoyed listening to this explanation of the offering services for free. Recently at a gym where I'm a member, I spoke to the manager about my experience in the field of video production, a decade of buildining a media program, equipping a studio, designing that studio for a company I worked for. I had noted that they put out a lot of media/postings for promotional purposes and was looking for some work. Their production levels are basic, mobile phones are predominately used with basic editing and audio is all from the phones. So I offered pro bono to the manager and left it at that, he didn't commit to anything and all I can hope is that I've sown a seed for the future perhaps. I agree that services offered free creates good will and it comes back to you in many ways. Cheers Graham
I love how he put it as the "three B's". My philosophy has been you should never work for free, but that doesn't always mean money. It can be about gaining experience, having an experience, making connections, supporting something you believe in, or a hundred other reasons. Money is great, but there are a lot of other ways to find value in a project as well.

These videos are always so inspiring. It really reminds the Creatives out there that not every job is going to be paid, but that doesn't matter as long as it creates potential for more work in the future.
I can't imagine anyone getting far in this business without having worked for free. Some of my best gigs came from something I did for free. Sometimes working for free can be exhilarating, because you are probably woking on something you want to work on and there is a creative rush when you can just do that without worrying about making sure you are getting paid for everything you are doing. Just my two cents!
I enjoyed this. I’m working on a painting project right now and plan to donate the art to historical societies/museums that might use the art to have a narrative of a particular time. Been a big advocate of this personal strategy over the years. Can be great to break into an area you are passionate about (because getting paid for what you love is just a little bit too lucky for most of us), have a professional relationship with someone you want to work with (bridge), or develop skills in a real way. You can usually do it on your own terms, so it can sit alongside other commitments and you never know what will come of it. It's a bit like playing the stock market, in terms of value returning that you can't really predict, but as you're doing something you love, if it does come back, it'll likely be aligned with your interests. Have worked with some great people, and even had some modest startup payouts unexpectantly, years after the event.

One of the way I approach the question of working for free is that I alway try to put my self in situations I haven’t tried before. Working for free ofte changes the brief to be more bold and open to experiments. Which more often that not leads to the good stuff rather than a forced setup.

To expand on this concept. Do the gigs you don’t want to do. I owned my DJ company for 12 years. A few times a year some of my really good clients would ask me to do gigs that i absolutely wanted nothing to do with. Some of the times, they would be in a pinch and needed me asap. So I would do these gigs as favors for these guys not expecting anything in return. What that did in turn was get me tons of referrals from these people because they knew that I always took care of them and knew that I could almost always come through. When a customer feels that way toward you, they will tell Everyone about you. When they feel the same way the feel about everyone else, they will never talk about you.
The RESPECT is the most important thing. If the person doesn't respect what you do for free, then don't do it. He/She will treat you like a slave and as a matter of fact, your equipment may get damaged and you will end up worse than if you don't do it. But if they appreciate you dearly, there is nothing that should stop you from showing off your skills even it's for free. Ex musician experience
Dude i love your videos but this one is my favorite so far! I owned a painting business and this is exactly how we have built our small buisness. We have to invest at times alittle bit of our times!
If i shoot for free, which I'm on the fence whether i do too much, i take it as... 1. Practice 2. Might lead to something down the road 3. Might lead to more exposure 4. Worst case scenario, i have content to post on social media
Agreed when I first started my business I did free photoshoots to get up to a point where I felt comfortable charging for my work knowing my product output would be worth monetizing
I've been working for free a long time and now I have two Canon Cinema cameras and people still don't want to pay much... I know the answer lies within myself and making myself stronger and better.
Free is king! I ended up becoming a vendor with Marriott because I made them a ton of free videos! Free or full price! That has been the biggest thing for our business, from real estate to resorts!
Pete this is really amazing because I just started doing some product photography for a few people for free that I know and I 100% feel like it is building that bridge to other opportunities. I was even gifted a nice allocated bottle of whiskey for my photos I provided for free. Great video as always sir. Cheers
Man dude, I love this. I will always do some work for free. The elimination of restraints has enabled me to shoot that next best thing, and I believe in that. I'm on board with this. And its whats enabled me to be able to charge more that I could have dreamed. I, for one, and whatever that's worth, believe in this.
For one of the first jobs in my career, I told the art director we could work out a rate when the job was done. He looked at me and said, "Act like a clown; get treated like a clown." Another one: Is this a business or a hobby? Harsh words but honesty.
Like if you want Peter to bring back "editing your photos"

If i shoot for free, which I'm on the fence whether i do too much, i take it as...
1. Practice
2. Might lead to something down the road
3. Might lead to more exposure
4. Worst case scenario, i have content to post on social media
Agreed when I first started my business I did free photoshoots to get up to a point where I felt comfortable charging for my work knowing my product output would be worth monetizing
For some reason this has the 8 camera hacks in 90secs vibe and I love it!
doing work for free is how i briefly fell into doing paid portraits and weddings
I've been working for free a long time and now I have two Canon Cinema cameras and people still don't want to pay much...
I know the answer lies within myself and making myself stronger and better.
LOVE you're vids! Glad you are back captain :)
Free is king! I ended up becoming a vendor with Marriott because I made them a ton of free videos! Free or full price! That has been the biggest thing for our business, from real estate to resorts!
Love this message. So true. Do the work first, learn and establish yourself. Invest in others, they will invest in you. Peace ✨
Getting all Red Dead Redemption vibes…. 🔥🔥🔥
Pete this is really amazing because I just started doing some product photography for a few people for free that I know and I 100% feel like it is building that bridge to other opportunities. I was even gifted a nice allocated bottle of whiskey for my photos I provided for free. Great video as always sir. Cheers
There it is. My weekly inspiration.
Man dude, I love this. I will always do some work for free. The elimination of restraints has enabled me to shoot that next best thing, and I believe in that. I'm on board with this. And its whats enabled me to be able to charge more that I could have dreamed. I, for one, and whatever that's worth, believe in this.
Loved this video. Thanks for sharing Pete.
Still looking for the damn elephant hehe merry Christmas big nuts cheers
Ha.. holding your eyes open in the smoke and see who blinks first..... brought back some memories of doing that as a kid up at Sauble Beach. Cheers !
Nice to see Peter back :)
Its absolutely looks awesome ❤
GIVE IT AWAY TO KEEP IT. My moto is to avoid fear-based decisions. All of that bleeds into family, friends, business and certainly my art. Boom!
This lighting setup looks amazing!❤️🙌🏼
For one of the first jobs in my career, I told the art director we could work out a rate when the job was done. He looked at me and said, "Act like a clown; get treated like a clown." Another one: Is this a business or a hobby? Harsh words but honesty.
Glad to see you properly clothed for the weather instead of a hoodie lol
Leather - the outside | Rough out leather - underside of leather | Suede - the inside of leather if you were to tear a piece of leather in half
Love every bit of this
Those pictures are fire! The Jackets are sick! And yeah, sometimes I work to build bridges, books or bank accounts.
The "Full Price or Free" resonates so much with me. I am very much the same way
The beginning of- SO ACCURATE!!!!!!! 😂😂🤙🏽
Work for FUN. That's what I'd say. If that happens to be free, then so be it.
