I love coming back to older videos of popular youtubers. It gives me motivation to keep pursuing my goals even on days where everything seems to go wrong and you're running on empty. Just keep pushing, keep creating and never give up. You'll get there in the end.
This video was the turning point for his channel. It brought out his personality, passion, and shined a light on his expertise. He found his niche and voice here. Good job Peter.
from what I understand, the Metabones Adapter Mark IV for canon to Sony E-mount is really quite good. Makes it easy to use a Sony with you're awesome Canon glass
man, you've came a long way. There are soooooo many differences between this video compared to now. dialogue, background, music, engagement, cursing, etc. you've killing it
Peter McKinnon Which camera should I own that'll allow me to shoot photos & videos (with professional audio) professionally that's also relatively small & portable?
I’m getting back to photography. I went into a mental issue and gave it up. A few years later im already getting my stuff to get back and relearn and I saw some of your videos way back, I’m watching all of them now. You’re an inspiration thank you and keep the good work.
You can see the evolution of his style and cinematography in general. This video is so clean and objetive. As the videos today are way more produce with amazing lights. Good to see his developing in so short time
Hey...how about a blog on memory cards. What size, how many, what brand, when to change, how to store them, what if you run out of space in the middle of a shoot, how many do you carry in your gear bag, what if a card gets damaged, can the video be recovered, where do you store videos and for how long?
wARNING: this mini-essay is so tl;dr for me, I won't even bother proofreading. I understand if the majority won't bother. Sorry, but I just had to pause the video halfway through, as I became so overwhelmed with gratitude. Why? Your videos, much like this one, teaches me with such fluidity in detail, down to even your word choices and sentence structure, that I now watch many of your videos whilst taking notes on pen/paper. You are an excellent instructor. I have yet to find another (even beyond YT) that gives me the knowledge I crave so dearly to learn the fundamentals of photography and cinematography. Thank you so much, Peter. I hope your blogs last a lifetime. You radiate selflessness through every video being you. Never change please!!!
The fact that I have not yet fully achieved my life's goals is my number one motivator for continuing to strive towards my life's goals. Not just photo/ video but to wake up every day thinking it was your last and there are yet too many things that need to be done too many dreams that have to be conquered. Until The day I finally fathom success thats what inspires me :) and Congrats on the 500k :)
Peter I've been watching a lot of your videos and I really appreciate the knowledge you're providing. I just started my own VLOG and my photos are looking 100X better thanks to your videos!
Bro! I don't ever comment on any content. EVER. As a matter of fact, this is probably a first for me. I just wanted to say Thank you! Your content, style, and delivery is top notch and I've learned something valuable from every single video. Keep doing your thing and I'll keep watching. Cheers!
7 years later, i come back and scroll down to your very first video and watch, that's how much I have followed this channel. There is no better definition of persistence, consistence and growth. 😎
Literally the best photography channel I've come across yet. Always straight to the point, short sharp facts, great quality. Keep the good work up man 👍
Peter: “this isn’t even one of there high end cameras” Me: “oh okay cool maybe I could get it”, *clicks Amazon link and sees it’s $5,000* Me: *proceeds to convulse and shit pants*
Ha! Same. I'm new at this stuff so I came here to see his humble beginnings to make myself feel a little better and I find out he was using a 5k camera. I'm just gonna have to make do with my $500 camera lmao
Hi. I really like your style of vlogs and the photos & videos you make are incredible. Could you maybe do a beginner guide on how to shoot a video and/or make a quality photos? Thanks :)
I’m relatively new to this but this video here changed into the vlogger we know now...I wish I could be 1/50th as good as your first video posted on here! You my man are THE MAN!
Anyone else notice Daniel Madison at 5:31? Honestly one of my favorite magicians. And then Chris Ramsey at 5:33! Two of my most favorite things. Card magic, and photography!
This is a very useful, very comprehensive gear breakdown, including detailed explanations of _WHY_ Peter uses the gear he does. I like it a lot and learned a fair bit along the way. Thank you!
I just got a new camera (sony a6000) and i'm trying to learn as much as possible. You have a great way of explaining yourself, it makes it easy for me to understand all this camera talk. love your videos!
Worked with Premiere for years, edited my short movies with that. Worked well, but now that I do only personal work, honestly, nothing beats DaVinci Resolve. It's powerful and (cherry on the top) it's FREE.

I'm still thinking between it and the 7DMkII, just because the double card slot and the headphones jack. But 500€ price difference are too many euros in favor of the 80D.
I agree. It's basically all the AVID and FCP7 people finally agreeing on something that feels similar. Premiere is becoming the industry standard mostly because of the initial launch of FCPX and the fact that the Magnetic Timeline is so alien if you're used to the other method. You just get used to something and stick with it. For instance I love Logic and have used it since it was owned by Emagic, but for hardcore audio editing ProTools is just easier. For composing Logic is the way to go. I do know that FCPX render/transcode times are faster than Premiere and Premiere does have a tendency to crash from time to time. But yes, FCPX is very professional and I'm sure you'll dig this article about the snobbery of those who think FCPX is iMovie Pro. www.fcp.co/final-cut-pro/news/1225-fcp-x-in-bulgaria-a-new-definition-of-professional
PETE (hello!) I love rewatching your videos man, reminiscing and really letting it all sink in. I fully believe there is always more to learn from re-watching/listening/reading anything.
I know the feels for the 5D3. I got mine used at a stellar deal, was in amazing condition for how long it was in commission (over 170k shutter actuations when I got it!), and I've been out with it almost every day. Recently the rubberized grip was coming loose at the same spot, but a dab of Krazy Glue locked it in and kept me from fidgeting with it on my shoots!
THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT ABOUT FINAL CUT! My film teacher says I have to use it, and I can but the app is just so more complicated than it needs to be, so I use iMovie more often
I only have my iPhone and an action camera to take shots with me but this inspires me to really work hard to capture photos and create films with just about these tools I have now, get better and get those gears you have there. Thanks, so much!
I bought the 70-200 2.8 Canon lens like the one here in this video about 3 years ago to go traveling, sent it home within the first 2 months as it was just too heavy for my backpack. This video has me amping to use it again though, gonna give it another shot on the road with me
I'm a fcpx user and not a Canon user, but I actually really appreciate this video. You didn't dumb it down and say, It's not the gear, it's the person behind the gear. Ugh. Can't stand when people say that. No shit, sherlock. But the gear needs special praise now adays. We simply wouldn't be able to do what we do without all this current gear. So thank you for not being that guy.
It's a couple minutes until the year 2020, and I am seeing this video for the first time. It's instantly special to me because I am NOW where I think he was then. Also, I think it's hilarious to see him talk about him being a Canon user like it's a big reveal 😅

This video was the turning point for his channel. It brought out his personality, passion, and shined a light on his expertise. He found his niche and voice here. Good job Peter.
Ima call you Peter McCanon
I accept that.
Peter McKinnon do think that cannon and nikon ultimately do the same thing because i got a nikon and don't want to be missing out on anything
Oh, I'm already convinced McCanon IS his real last name... he changed it for artistic reasons, actually LOL
from what I understand, the Metabones Adapter Mark IV for canon to Sony E-mount is really quite good. Makes it easy to use a Sony with you're awesome Canon glass
hahahahaha sounds like
Anyone notice that when he spoke about auto-focus (1:41) his shot went out of focus? Perfect.
Ye! He could always get a cheeky Sony A6300 ;)
Quinn Hughes 😂😂 I definitely did. I think it was intentional though. Great video btw.
haha, yep!
as someone who once owned a Canon I assure you: it was not intentional ;)
How can one do that intentionally?
man, you've came a long way. There are soooooo many differences between this video compared to now. dialogue, background, music, engagement, cursing, etc. you've killing it

Chris Ramsay you looked amazing in this video bro 😎

I'm Not Called Albino Panther because he can😂
Chris Ramsey you stupid old piece of shit your are a decil witchcraft your magic is real

Just found my new favorite photography YT channel.
Thanks! I have lots of content planned!

Peter McKinnon Which camera should I own that'll allow me to shoot photos & videos (with professional audio) professionally that's also relatively small & portable?
Relatively small + portable = mirrorless cameras. If you are on a budget, the Sony A6000 is a very good camera to start with.
I'm gonna have to agree with you on this!
3 years later its funny as hell to actually hear him curse
Brazil Plays I was thinking the same
I’m getting back to photography. I went into a mental issue and gave it up. A few years later im already getting my stuff to get back and relearn and I saw some of your videos way back, I’m watching all of them now. You’re an inspiration thank you and keep the good work.
