North American VW ID. Buzz first look // 10 things you need to know

  • This is a Motormouth first look at the all-new 2025 North American Volkswagen ID. Buzz coming later next year.
    1. The North American ID. Buzz is quite different from the European model. This is a 3-row vehicle where the European model is only 2 rows.
The North American ID. Buzz offers a longer wheelbase, a larger battery and more power than the European model. It provides more space for people and cargo as well.
    2. The ID. Buzz will have RWD and AWD models available.
All models come with a 1-speed transmission, the standard RWD model has a 91 kWh battery and 282 horsepower. An available AWD model with dual motors has 330 horsepower and a maximum torque number of 406 lb-ft. The new electric motor of the ID. Buzz increases the top speed to an electronically limited 99 mph up from the European model of 90 mph.
    3. The exterior of the ID. Buzz retains its traditionally boxy shape with short overhangs but has a more modern look now.
It is 192.4” in length, nearly 10” longer than the two-row ID.Buzz in Europe. All that additional length comes from a 127.5” wheelbase vs 117.6” for the two-row. It is 77.9” wide and 74.6” tall making it roughly as wide as an Atlas but 5” taller. That’s a lot bigger than the original bus which was about as long as the 2019 Beetle. It has a drag co-efficient of 0.29 which is pretty good considering its boxy design.
    4. There are some vintage features and bright and fun exterior colour options for the
ID. Buzz, most are bright and fun.
The futuristic ID. Buzz has some retro cues like the iconic large VW logo which is illuminated with a light line that extends to either side connecting the LED headlights. Bold and fun exterior colours are available like Energetic Orange, Pomelo Yellow, Mahi Green and Cabana Blue. More toned down colour options are available like silver and grey and there’s also an available two-tone colour palette. The Buzz comes standard with 20” wheels, power folding and heated exterior mirrors and a power tailgate with a kick sensor.
    5. The interior is spacious, modern and has a bit of a retro feel just like the exterior with a removable centre console for flexibility.
The centre console includes flexible storage on top with two dividers that double as a bottle opener and ice scraper as well as two additional storage compartments below.
The Buzz offers a high seating position with standard 12-way power driver and passenger seats with dual armrests, ventilation, massage and memory functions, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats as well as heated outboard second row seats. All three-rows have dedicated air vents and second and third row windows are tinted.
Second row seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split and the seatbacks can be raked by 16 degrees. The bench can also be moved fore and aft by up to 7.9” and can be moved forward by 4” with the touch of a handle for easy access into the third row.
Seating for 7 is standard and captain’s chairs are available with seating for 6. The second and third rows fold flat and the third row can be removed completely. An available flex board with two fabric storage bins creates a flat floor with the seats folded.
    6. There are plenty of interior colour options to choose from for your ID.Buzz
The Buzz has leatherette upholstery with three colour options, a dark brown and black combination with white piping, light grey and clay combination with clay coloured piping and light brown with yellow piping. Ambient lighting with 30 colours is standard and allows drivers to select from 5 pre-set moods or choose different areas individually.
    7. There is an available panoramic sunroof that changes from clear to opaque with the swipe of a finger.
This sunroof is 67.4” long and 40.8” wide making this the largest of any sunroof in the Volkswagen Group. Coating in the glass helps to reflect sunlight to help reduce the heat that could enter the vehicle on those hot days.
    8. The ID.Buzz gets all the latest technology with an updated infotainment system just like the ID.7
The touch sliders for volume and temperature have been illuminated and the infotainment screen has the climate functions at the bottom of the display allowing easy access when needed. The top bar has a new direct access function on the left which opens the main menu.
    9. IQ. Drive, VW’s Driver Assist Technology is standard on the Buzz.
It includes features like lane centering and a capacitive steering wheel to help make driving easier on the highway. In the city, IQ. Drive helps alert you to obstacles in front of you, road sign display is standard as well as blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Available features include, a head-up display, park assist with remote parking and a 360 area view.
    10. When can you get a 3-row ID.Buzz?

The memories I have of driving in and using the old VW vans was that they had a camper set-up in the rear, a sink, small fridge, bench that turns into a bed, and a pop-top so you could stand up inside when cooking and doing camping stuff. For me... no camper model, no deal.

Very cute and quirky. I am in the never-again Volkswagen camp after once owning a nightmare Jetta, but VW does have their appeal. I love how Andrea always matches the car - they must have told you in advance of your trip which color you would get to see? One of these days we need a closet tour for Andrea (and maybe combined with a watch tour for Zack). As a woman of a similar age but zero fashion sense, I am always in awe of Andrea! :)

It's funny but every VW owner I personally know says the same thing. Never again. But that is generally true for most German makes once they get bills for things like brakes that are 10 times more expensive and last half as long as the Japanese cars. This van looks great and hopefully, they learned a lesson from the terrible "New Beatle" where VW had such a great opportunity to build a cute car and make it reliable. Why is it so hard to make a reliable car? If Toyota can do it then why doesn't VW buy one and reverse-engineer them. This van with Toyota reliability would be great - I mean when it comes to looks the Sienna LOL - uggh. Maybe they should team up - VW for the Style and Toyota for the substance.

It seems like about 10 years since i first saw the "VW Bulli," which was the **NEW** gen Bus that VW promised. Fast forward to today, and they are STILL saying they need 2 more years. Positives: interior styling; exterior not bad, but could have been a lot more futuristic. Negatives: will be priced way too high for most folks; expected VW (lack of) reliability; BEV gremlins. I think it's smart to offer the 5-pasenger model in Canada; don't know why they didn't want to market that in the US. I predict lots of "fun" interest when it finally appears... but few sales compared to the investment in time and money for this thing.

Wonderful concept - great for us old hippies and flower children. If only it were a hybrid. Just finished a 10 day, 5500km roadrip to N. California. There were many places it would have been very hard to find a place to charge it in an expeditious manner. A roadtrip vehicle, this is NOT. A city runabout or short distance highway car - maybe. I've always said, "You can't supply me a car like this with a long enough extension cord." I stand by that to this day. You didn't mention price. Wait for it and hold onto your wigs!!! This is going to be a VERY expensive golf cart (pun intended, VW).

Looking forward to the camper version ... my only complaint is that they seem to have dropped the glass openness of the original. The original felt completely airy and open. The new model has smaller windows, and all the high seatbacks that make it look much more claustrophobic

    • @V10PDTDI
      @V10PDTDI Год назад +1

The window pillars has to be much bigger than the original version because of rollover protection and now with the side curtains air bags you have to leave room on the top of the windows and the high back seats is the same it’s for rear crash protection

Damn! Volkswagen is trying to resurrect the ‘minivan’ industry with style! All whilst taking it to a new level. Unfortunately that new level isn’t just the latest innovations, the coolest tech and this evolutionary radical… ‘retro’ design… it involves attracting a new level of client… rich. Which sadly isn’t me. The Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth minivans established the minivan market because they provided an any size family vehicle that gave them space/fuel economy/size and all the creature comforts or more (T&C)… and most importantly at a respectably affordable price. This new Volkswagen minivan is basically a ‘Fashion Statement’. All that being said… I do think it looks Super Cool! Thanks for the video.

Great video, you guys! Another job well done. I know this vehicle has been a long time coming with many set backs on the release year. Looking at the ID Buzz compared to the original, I wish they had been able to better adapt the striking look of the original front with that iconic V-shape. I know there is a huge fan base and love for the original and many will be glad to have this as a futuristic version. While I think the inside looks good, the outside doesn't do it for me. I know it's hard to make a mini-van look good but this just looks so frumpy. It's very blocky. I know today's vehicles have more room and a wider wheel base and the original pillars of the VW Bus would not be adequate for today's safety standards but Volkswagen could have incorporated some of the other original design elements like the V-shape in the front, rounded headlights, and possible even some of the chrome elements. It seems like a missed opportunity not to lean into those nostalgic design cues in the same way they did when they created the New Beetle. If it better captured the VW Bus I think it could be given a pass on it's frump. I know some will love it as is and the fact that they are both vans with the VW logo will be all the commonality to the original some buyers will need. Those small similarities won't be enough to get me overlook the likely high price in 2023 or the fact that I can probably do better for reliability.

I love everything about it and I have honestly been waiting for this car for nearly three years. Unfortunately two things are going to kill this dream for me at least in the first few years 1) no reservation system so first come first serve meaning massive markups. I refuse to pay anything except msrp. 2) only 170kw charging. This is much too slow for a car with a 91kw battery. Any car worth road tripping needs to have at least 250kw if it runs on a 400v architecture.

Because vast majority of buyers won't actually buy a fun color on a mainstream car.

This looks beautiful inside and out and I couldn’t imagine not getting the two tone version. I really like the blue and white shown here. I doubt it will be available to purchase at MSRP for a few years. I’m still not a fan of the infotainment slider controls and I fear they kept the haptic buttons on the steering wheel. So I’ll think about that while I can’t buy this car. 😊

The haptic touch controls are great once you get used to them. I own a 2023 vw, dont let the touch sensors keep you from making a purchase.

Very promising, a lot to like. But with the problems with their ID4 (and our ownership problems with a Jetta that made us swear off VW); for us, we'll need a couple years of real world use before we'd seriously consider it. I really do hope they got it right.

How bad is the ID4? i was considering it when im ready to go EV. saw that it mostly has software issues. I got a GTi currently and its been the best car i've ever owned. Made me a VW fan. Sorry to hear about your jetta!

@@Nizon VW has a poor track record on the software updates. New ID.4s should behave far better than the earlier models. Same software issues on the ID3.

The Canadian 5 passenger model interests me, although if it has the longer North American wheelbase it may not fit in my garage with the rear hatch open. I’ll add this to my list of possible EVs that might accommodate an electric scooter lift made by Harmar or Bruno. There are no EVs announced yet that will take a rear access mobility scooter lift.
