I had a Grand Espace for several years, it was the 3.0V6 so decently fast and capable of swallowing huge loads and still able to stop. This reminds me of that. Wonderously useful and ideal for long journeys with several people.
In the US, apparently orders are going to be exclusively through dealers instead of the ID.4 model of basically being exclusively through the website. I was able to get a down payment on the books to hold a place in line, which is good because US allocations are supposed to be VERY tight for at least 2024. I will almost certainly buy an early model with modest battery pack and specs, and upgrade later to a pop-top camper version, which I believe will also be equipped with a ~100-110kWh battery pack. Oh, and these are not going to be cheap in any US spec.
Not cheap in US at MRP, and then those dealers are going to add $20000, maybe $50000 market adjustments until demand starts to wane. And VW obviously support this approach by making it exclusively dealer sold….

I was so disappointed that they took away the bonnet badge illumination with the regular wheelbase version after we saw it in Jonny’s buzz concept video 6 years back, glad to see it’s back in this form, overall it seems like they’ve created the ultimate buzz with this LWB North American specced out version, interested to see what the GTX will be like.
Seems perfect for my family of 5 in San Francisco. I have a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid now, but this saves 9 inches of length. Crucial for parallel parking and small garages.
I Canada we will apparently be getting the 5 seats as standard with the 2 additional seats as add on options. I like the design, but seems to only really make sense as a commuter or local family transporter. I can't imagine relying on this for any real recreational use for long distances.

I did try to arrange a test drive with my local VW dealership who messed me around something rotten! Still love 'em though.
Got a test drive of the SWB version and loved it, but it was too small in the SWB format. The LWB 99kW is going to be the one to buy, especially if it comes with LFP batteries. Just need to sell the children and the house to afford it, if the price of the SWB version is anything to go by ! 😂😂😂
Got a T4 and seen so many people being snotty about this but I love it, got great ideas to personalise one, love the long wheelbase, can't wait to see the campers and a pop top
Looks fantastic though I wish they went with individual rail style seating like the T7 Multivan we have. The flexibility to take all the seats out and turn it into the Buzz cargo would have been awesome.
Strongly agree with you. If Individual removable seats added, This would be 100% satisfied to me, now only 70%. I am driving T6.1, waiting for T7 4motion, now I changed my mind and waiting for ID buzz LWB 6 seater to NZ.

VW will have it's own California version. But the range issue is a serious problem even with the upcoming 111 kwh battery pack and bi-motor. 300 miles at best is not good enough. You would need to lug around a petrol powered generator and that would get you no more than 300 miles anyway, I'm talking about remote driving in Australia.

nice work Jonny boy. Love the retro design of this, reminds me of when VW did it to the Beetle. Not so sure about the white interior, it will get filthy !
It really looks great. Emjoyed watching it. But one thing that really pisses me off about all 7 seaters is how crap the boot is with with 3 rows up. 310 litres in this one is pretty crap. I have 5 kids under 10 years old.And can barely fit a pushchair in the boot behind the 3rd row, then when groceries etc need to go in its a game of tetris, split between the remainder of the boot and the footwells behind the front seats.. surely the fact the buyer needs 7 seats should also signal they may have greater need of a large boot too if its aimed as a family vehicle.
It would have been nice for it to be 7 seat with the captains chairs in the second row 2-2-3, that is. The sienna and the Pacifica vans accomplish this and the back row is still comfortable enough.
I like the well organised presentation with a note book. I think you should make the notebook style standard... looks more authentically well researched and not too rehearsed... including the 'oh, let me check that...' 👌
I really want this in the 5 seat format for putting all my camping gear in. I would love to cover the roof in solar panels so I rarely have to charge it, it seems a shame with that massive sunroof though. A final thought, that towbar release looks really dirty.
Agree. Could be simply a weight/cost issue, however VW could offer it as an option given that many Asian minivans already offer this captains chair feature.
I've never been a VW fan. The classic ones are death traps and slow. The newer ones have all the expense of a European car, with the wrong wheel drive of a Japanese car and the unreliability of an American car. But I like minivans and I like RWD, and I like beautiful vehicles so this is a very compelling vehicle! Something nobody else has!
Hey now, my 2wd T3 has done just fine in Colorado for the last 30+ years. Seems like a missed opportunity to call the dual motor version the Syncro, but I doubt people will be leaving the pavement with these.
I would have an LWB in a heartbeat.... but I fear the cost will be eye-watering given the SWB prices in the UK. I also don't like the "white" interior as it seems it would get dirty too quickly. Presumably, there are other interior options?
Nice review. Not a car for my needs but it does look very appealing visually. I know it's part of the business with marketing and influencing reviewers, but why they don't have these launches in multiple locations instead of having to fly a bunch of people over to California is really a bit over the top in my mind.
You showed designs from 2001, that's 22 years back ,and highlights how things do take time to get to the finish line ,imagine in 22years from now what will be presented ,what designs and concepts are out now ?
I like the long wheel base though there seems to be no mention of the cargo version. As I live in the land of ice and snow, sometimes call the Great White North I am looking at the AWD option. The sun roof is a cool option but I have a sun roof on my '05 TDI Golf and I haven't opened it it about a year let alone pulled the cover back and I view it as a vent which the buzz is not capable. I will be putting my order down as soon as ordering becomes available. They say that there will be some minor differences between the US and Canadian versions. I really do like those passenger side windows as possible vents.

I really want this in the 5 seat format for putting all my camping gear in. I would love to cover the roof in solar panels so I rarely have to charge it, it seems a shame with that massive sunroof though.
A final thought, that towbar release looks really dirty.
This looks great and seems really fun. I would love it if the front seats could rotate to be able to face the middle and back seats.
Agree. Could be simply a weight/cost issue, however VW could offer it as an option given that many Asian minivans already offer this captains chair feature.
Allready a Company in UK that makes a turning plate for the front seats
I've never been a VW fan. The classic ones are death traps and slow. The newer ones have all the expense of a European car, with the wrong wheel drive of a Japanese car and the unreliability of an American car. But I like minivans and I like RWD, and I like beautiful vehicles so this is a very compelling vehicle! Something nobody else has!
im SOOO excited!!! i want one STAT, but am really looking forward to the westfalia edition im hoping for. 😅
Hey now, my 2wd T3 has done just fine in Colorado for the last 30+ years.
Seems like a missed opportunity to call the dual motor version the Syncro, but I doubt people will be leaving the pavement with these.
does synchro even have any cachet among americans who aren't vw nerds
@@ShaiyanHossain mostly just among the T3 nerds. Even the awd Golf Sportwagon we got here, they called it Alltrack.
If the engineering behind the looks is in the same category this will be a big succes.
I hope they've thought of future disassemble and recycling to.
Love the back seats. Roger, roger. 😁
Totally R a d Mahn!🛺🛶🧳
🏄♂️🌊
Nice that they will have an AWD option, and great that you can completly remove the rear row seat.
Cool vehicle I love the look. Prices will be epic in any specification.
I really like it, bold design with clear nostalgic nods to the type 2
Thanks for this comprehensive review of the car
The gap between the front seats- a walk-through......for a cuppa or a sanger (or a kip) especially in winter/during rain/when it's very dark etc
seen on today in cottingham , yellow and white it looked cool
I would have an LWB in a heartbeat.... but I fear the cost will be eye-watering given the SWB prices in the UK. I also don't like the "white" interior as it seems it would get dirty too quickly. Presumably, there are other interior options?
The LWB is the one, as it hasn't interrupted the design at all. As you say, pricing might be spicy.
Heavier bodywork & battery, 7 seats & occupants ...
Any news on empty and max gross weight, as the commercial van was already weight-challenged ?
It’s nice to see Jonny is away on Buzznuss……🙈
