Ya know danny, I as a pro unionist englishman, do believe scotland could go independant, why couldnt they, if iceland can be independant there is no reason scotland can't. I do however think the SNP are deluding voters in what they must give up for it. SNP would have you believe that an independant scotland will get all the bells and whistles and the best of all words.. just simply wont happen. At the very least scotland will suffer over a decade of growth struggle and as andrew pointed out austerity is a given, EU and UK would insist upon if it wished to join the EU, the EU would insist onit like it did with greece, if it wasn't in the EU but still using stelrin and monetary union bank of england would insist onit. The biggest arguement with independant scotland is actually the same 2 arguements in used for remaining in the EU: Firstly) EU is uk 12%gdp, why cut yourself off from biggest market, it would be devastating.. scotland gdp is 60% reliant on the UK.. so how bad would that be in 12% is bad for uk? secondly.. Geography Why would you cut yourself off and make barriers to your next door neighbour.. scotland would not only suffer 1 barrier to the EU.. it would suffer 2.. so its growth figured are absolutely disingenious.. if UK will suffer so badly from 1 trade barrier.. how bad will scotland suffer with 2.. Not to mention the fact scotland is assuming it will be able to freely transport it's goods to the EU via uk and dover.. which there is absolutely no guarantee that will be the case.. which will make scottish exports ALOT more expensive. But like I said, I believe scotland can be independant, I just don't think there very realistic nor our SNP supporters about how hard it is going to hit you. But I think 15-20 years of independance would be a more likely estimate for scotland to become stable. And I don't think scotland will be anywhere close to joining the EU, if at all.. for at least the same time. EU currently just taken on 1.5 trillion of debt, there is no reason to believe they would want to take on a country with 9% deficit, 2 boarders to cross, and to have to renegotiate its agreement it just signed with the UK.. lets not mention catalonia and the issues it will cause in spain.

The SNP has never said that EVERYONE in Scotland wants to join the EU. They fully understand that at the Brexit vote Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU. But they also understand that some SNP supporters and some supporters of other parties would like an EFTA type agreement and their is A % of of voters who want nothing to do with the EU. In an independent Scotland the SNP will campaign in any election for full membership of the EU, other parties will have to decide their campaigning strategy with regard to the EU. Then it will be up to the people of Scotland to vote for the party that best reflects their views. It’s called democracy.

In effect the stance being put forward on behalf of the SNP came down to "We can ignore the deficit because the IMF said that post Covid..." Ignoring deficits is strictly aimed at major and established economies that can help kick start the global economy and not nations just starting out.
In effect what an independent Scotland could be looking at is a minimum 10 and more like 20 years of no longer being part of the UK and yet not meeting the entry requirements of the EU this may not play well with the domestic electorate and will not be attractive to inward investment.

Spain will have the last word on who can enter Gibraltar under the terms of the preliminary post-Brexit deal announced this week, Spain’s foreign minister has said, in an assertion that wasn't challenged by Gibraltar’s chief minister.
The agreement in principle - struck just hours before Gibraltar was poised to become the only frontier marked by a hard Brexit - will allow the British overseas territory to join the Schengen free movement area with Spain acting as a guarantor and authoriser.
Gibraltar’s port and airport would become the external borders of the Schengen area, with checks undertaken by the EU’s Frontex border agency for an initial period of six months.
“Schengen is a set of rules, procedures and tools, including its database, to which only Spain has access. Gibraltar and the United Kingdom do not,” Arancha González Laya told Spanish newspaper El País in an interview published on Saturday. “That is why the final decision on who enters the Schengen area belongs to Spain.”
Brexit is nothing to celebrate, says Gibraltar's foreign minister
When pressed on whether this would entail the presence of Spanish customs or police in Gibraltar - a point that had proved to be a significant sticking point in the negotiations - González Laya said further details would be made public after she informed Spain’s parliament on the deal in the coming days. “Evidently, there must be a Spanish presence to carry out the minimum tasks of Schengen control,” she said.
"police and border guards' salaries and pension contributions will be paid for by Gibraltar"
The government of Gibraltar did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But on Saturday, responding to an article published by a right-wing Spanish newspaper, Fabian Picardo, the territory’s chief minister tweeted: “Under the New Year’s Eve agreement only Spain will decide who enters Gibraltar and Spanish officers will exercise full control in Gibraltar at the airport and port now and in the future. This is our land. Couldn’t be clearer.”
The negotiations had sought to capitalise on the shared interests between Spain and Gibraltar but also understood that a “larger dose of trust is needed”, said González Laya, citing the use of Frontex agents as an element aimed at building this trust while the UK is still under the control of Johnsons corrupt Conservative party.
Before the pandemic, an average of 28,500 people crossed the border a day, including about 15,000 cross-border workers.
The deal has been sent to Brussels, where the European commission will inform London of the new requirements and turn it into a treaty. González Laya estimated the process would take about six months. In the meantime, she said Spain would work to ensure that mobility at the shared land border - which as of Friday had been technically transformed into an external border of the EU - would be “as fluid as possible”.
'A day for hope': UK and Spain agree draft deal on post-Brexit status of Gibraltar
Under the deal Gibraltar would establish closer ties with the EU just as the UK formally severed ties with the bloc. “That’s the great paradox,” she said, pointing to the nearly 96% voters in Gibraltar who supported remaining in the EU in the 2016 referendum.
“What we have seen is a change of paradigm that is not made of concessions but by a convergence of interests between Gibraltarians and Spaniards, both of whom are pro-European,” she added. “This is one of the first fruits of Brexit for the EU, with many more to come.”
She stressed that, under the deal, “nobody ceded an inch” when it came to sovereignty claims over the territory. Spain ceded Gibraltar to Britain in 1713 but has long sought to reclaim it. This ambition still stands, and this is the first step.
Earlier in the week, the UK’s foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, famous for his utter stupidity and deceitful manner, said the deal only impinged on the sovereignty of the British overseas territory by a small but manageable amount. “We remain steadfast in our support for the people of Gibraltar, sovereignty there is safeguarded however much it may appear differently,” he said in a statement. All members of the press laughed heartily.

@@derekchapman5167 Estonia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic all took about 10 years from gaining their independence to becoming full members of the EU. The people of Scotland and Andrew Wilson understand that, however, Scotland would probably be accepted far quicker than that, we were a member for almost 50 years and fit most of the criteria required for EU membership, and Brussels unlike Westminster is a very accommodating administration and is more likely to assist rather than hinder Scotland’s entry. It is possible that on the actual day of independence Scotland will be a member of EFTA, just as Norway is, and it may be that the people of Scotland find this preferable to full membership. However as a member of the UK Scotland will be out of the EU and out of EFTA with no prospect of ever getting back. Some people talk about Scotland’s debt/ deficit, which if true shows that the UK does not work in Scotland’s interests. BJ and his fellow Tories say they want the UK to be on friendly terms and have good trading relationships with all the countries in the world, so just one question, does that include Scotland or will Westminster want to punish as much as possible a newly independent Scotland?

It seems to have escaped our nationalist friend that the EU has, in recent times, been tearing its hair out trying to figure out who was going to pay more in the post-Brexit absence of Britain's net contribution. Then COVID-19 hit, making matters immeasurably worse! When it comes to financial liabilities the EU is, therefore, already spoilt for choice--so I do think they'll be wanting to make their problems worse by volunteering to fill up Scotland's begging bowl. The great unfathomable tragedy in all of this is: How did it come to this? Speaking as an Australian of part Scottish descent, it saddens me that Scotland is in such an enfeebled state. After the 1707 Act of Union, Scotland defied the expected trajectory of a smaller nation being absorbed into a larger one: It flourished across the board--in Science, Philosophy, Economics, Commerce and Industry. Clearly Scotland needs to undergo a similar transformation today and I wouldn't presume--from this distance--to know how they might start the process: But might not lancing the boil-on-the-arse-of-Scottish-politics that is the Scottish National Party, be a very good place to start?

The 1707 Act of Union was to be a union of equal partners. How did that pan out? Do you know of the Alien Act?
Leading up to the 2014 referendum, "Don't leave us, lead us." "We will create a partnership of equals." Familiar?
Scotland, indeed all the devolved nations, couldn't even take part in the Covid meeting or any of the brexit meetings, trade talks/deals etc. Many more examples of this most unequal partnership abound and Westminster's devious machinations to keep hegemony.
Sorry you have such a jaundiced view of what is displayed tgrough the democratic vote in Scotland.
A voting system specifically designed not to allow the chance of a majorty vote, the modified De Hondt system. Not yet implemented at Westminster, funny that.

@@glasgovipsolara In what way are Scotland's resources stolen? Would they be not also be "stolen" if an independent Scotland joined the EU?
How are Scotland's electorate ignored? Our votes count just the same as any other constituent country of the UK. We have a devolved parliament where the Scottish electorate can decide who runs the Scottish Government. The best example of the Scottish electorate being ignored is the SNP's continued pursuit of independence despite a convincing win for the no campaign in a "once in a lifetime" referendum. The main reason we voted no in 2014 was because of the financial uncertainty around leaving the UK. Its clear from this video that the SNP has learned nothing in the last 6 years. Their strategy is to seemingly lie through their teeth until they get what they want.
