Goblins being able to disengage as a bonus action gives great survivability for casters. When you're stuck in melee at low levels, running is often a choice between disengaging or casting a spell. And regardless of what you do, if the enemy wants to hit you, they're likely to get to you anyway. You end up standing there in melee because removing yourself from there means you still get hit and you can't do anything useful for a round.
There are of course other ways to deal with it. Misty Step costs a 2nd lvl spell slot and limits you to cantrips for your action. Shocking Grasp (a favorite of mine) costs your action and if you miss you're still stuck. A Rogue dip slows your progression. Etc.

I like rogue for Hobgoblin. It's racial features can give whip and crossbow (the best weapons for rogues) proficiency, furthermore saving face is awesome for a skillmonkey and can make up for the lack of dex bonus. The best rogue subclasses are mastermind thematically and arcane trickster mechanically. Bard and order cleric mesh well with the hobgoblin's authoritative nature.

He was originally human monk based on the axe man gang from Kung fu hustle that died and was brought back to life by a nilbog. Its actually crazy how much 3 levels of cleric can give utility to an otherwise combat focused build.

  • @TheCanadianLord

Bugbear as a Gloom Stalker is great. they get a class boost to that first round of combat to _really_ maximize the ambush you pull. I was using a net and trident. with the backstory of them being an escaped pit fighter.
Goblin Kensei Monk is also crazy fun. I took the whip, blowgun, and spear as my first special weapons. the back story was that the grand master of the order was issued a challenge "if you're such a fine teacher, then train the untrainable." and they gave over a baby goblin to them. very fun. though Drunken Master would also be uber fun...
as to Hobgoblin, I went Blade Singer, with the backstory that generations ago their Clan captured and tortured the Elven Knight till they learned the way of it. then tossed a slight Samurai theme on there for aesthetics.

@@kaijukoopa1248 I like both Yuan'ti and Lizardfolk for roleplaying. They're so hilarious to think about. I usually use "sassy" as a pun when naming my Yuan'ti. Zliv Mousassi was one. I played a Circle of Spores Druid that was Yuan'ti and had snake pets he called Sassy.
Also. My friend is currently playing a Lizardfolk Monk that's hilariously primitive in reactions and intent. He's freaking awesome

I currently have a Goblin Wild Magic Sorcerer. He rolled decent-to-good on every stat, except for one, which he rolled a four.
Made that one his Int; essentially, he's completely controlled by his Gods as a puppet, stumbling from adventure to adventure, heedless of danger and societal norms in the name of his deities.

Hobgoblin Abjurer is a really solid gish option, though diviner pairs well of you want to stack on the roll manipulation.
For sorcerers, divine soul and wild mage hive you even more roll manipulation means.
Giant soul also would be a good fit in that regard, since the archetype is bent towards melee combat, and hob makes you more survivable from the start

I'm currently playing a rouge samurai goblin in ghosts of saltmarsh campaign at adventure legume and we haveing a lot of fun I'm trying to play a charter who is trying to learn morals and what does it mean to do good and then finding that it's a lot more complicated than just simple good and evil. we are playing a very story/RolePlaying focused campaign. But it's a lot of fun.

I'm currently playing a Goblin Wild Magic Sorcerer, the abilities Nimble Escape (able to cast a spell then hide made a lot easier, especially with Subtle Metamagic/able to get out of a sticky situation with disengage, not using a spell slot)and Fury of the Small (Extra Damage for spells is always good) help it a lot, and surprisingly, its stats, +2 to Dex (makes dex saves a lot easier) and +1 to Con (Sorcerers need that stat) help it out as well

Shoot, I haven't played, or even read a DnD book for many many years, but watching you guys' videos is inspiring me to want to get my hands on a sewt of the latest rulebooks and supplements so I can hunt down a decent gaming group! That aside, after watching this video, I have a feeling that, if I were to create &A play a Goblinoid character, I would likely create a huge Juggernaut type Brute of a Bugbear. Perhaps a Barbarian! But, a Goblin Rogue could be amusing, for sure! ;-) Wish you guys lived nearby so an old ex-gamer like me could shake your hands and perhaps join in on some of your games! (I suspect the two of you, and I are right about the same ages, give or take, maybe a few years..) Thanks for the great RPG Nerd videos, gents! ;-D

A bit late, but Ranger work super well on a bugbear. Especially a gloom stalker. You get pass without traces for surprise attacks and an extra attack on the first round.
Goblin wizard is very good. Bonus action hide make it hard to target them, and fury of the small turn magic missile into a boss killer (you multiply it by the number or missile)

I have an unexpected goblin character planned: A peace domain cleric.
He got spared by an adventuring party because he was holding a hegehog and didnt seem agressive at all. Little did they know that he was just wondering how the hell he would be able to eat the hedgehog. Still, this got him thinking, and he decided to actually care for the animal, and see if more people would leave him be. Most did, an some even gave the two of them some food scraps. A few revelations later he came to understand that he could bring peace to others as well, and he found himself serving some god (that probably had guided him for a while already).
The hedgehog is his arcane focus, which is the most important part.

Ever since I got ahold of Volo's I've been thinking of ideas for Monster Races in dnd.
Bugbear is one I haven't had much inspiration with. The idea of one that is a rogue that I could fudge the numbers of their hight and weight to max and then put (legally this time) all I can into stealth is as close as I've got. This individual that is 2 feet taller than most humans and at least twice as wide that can just....Disappear....Into the shadow behind that three foot barrel.
Goblin just seemed to write itself. Found on the steps of one of the lesser know "great" librarys of the world in a basket with a note saying "tastes like chicken" the people that found him did what anyone in their place would have. Made him a new project of studdy. At some point someone thought it would be funny to give him a lute. As the years went on he started doing some studdying of his own. In the end you have Mascot the NG Goblin Librarian Bard (College of Lore of course).
With Hobgoblins I had the fun idea to give in to that want to just play a game as someone that's here to do nothing else but "kill all the things" with Saabak the LE Hobgoblin Wizard (School of Evocation). The idea was mostly born from reading about hobgoblin devastaorts. His honnor stolen from him in a battle long pasted, but that didn't mean he was just going to lay down and give up. Since then he's been working as a Mercenary Veteran doing what he's best at. Making things dead with magic.
The idea of murderhobo-over-roleplay isn't something that appeals to me. A character that lets me roleplay a murderhobo? That sounds like it might be fun though.

Was recently playing a Storm Sorcerer/ Tempest Cleric Goblin who was an Is Scientist, rolled very well stat wise with 20 Dex and 18 Cha. Got to play for two sessions when he got possessed and killed by the party buttt he was very fun to play and was a bit of a glass cannon mono caster with low health during a boss fight got downed a few times and after like the 4th time and getting to attack got a nat 20 on a 3rd level Chromatic Orb got use Max damage and fury of the small on top was close to ~90 dmg on the boss was a great moment and turned the battle for us being on defense going full attack :)

My character is a level 7 oath breaker paladin and resently adopted a goblin and my DM told me that I could make a character sheet for it as my companion as I can train it as I see fit, and it starts off at level 5.
He did give me very low Stat blocks as it is a normal civilian goblin that has never seen combat before but can be trained to get higher and the highest stats he gave me was 2 11 Stat blocks wich I placed in DEX and WIS and bumping them up with the origin stats to 13DEX AND 12WIS.
As a respectable player to my DM I made it into a level 5 Ranger Hunter with Colossus slayer 1d8 and Favored foe 1d4. Also because rangers can half cast I also added in a hunters mark 1d6 and Cordon of arrows 1d6 with hand crossbows 1d6.
So while initiating combat the goblin is in the back casting hunters mark and stealthy sneak within 30 ft of range and cast Cordon of arrows and shooting with its hand crossbow 1d6.
If casted correctly on the second turn the Damage dies are 1d4+3d6+1d8+4 with DEX mod and Fury of the small.

Hey Ted, Dave I'm still watch'n the video. But I already know what character a goblin should play, Booyahg-Booyahg-Booyahg! The Sorceresses they get that dexterity & constitution bonus. For a PC you will have to take 2 levels of rouge. I don't think you start with proficiency with light armor & shields. After that you are good to go sorcerer the rest of the way.
Thanks Dave, Ted & have a great day.

My favorite is the bugbear shadow monk. The dude is basically a hit man. He has inherit stealth, a minor sneak attack, and the ability to cast spells like silence and pass without trace. He can give him self a +10 to stealth, drop a ball of silence, and then eliminate every target without making a noise.

I've played a Goblin Bard and I had a blast. Goblin has a stat block that calls for Barbarian, but their random outlook seems to call out to something else. Goblin Wild Mage just fits the "bouyaag bouyaag" outlook.
Bugbear just screams out Barbarian, but I really like the concept of the melee Ranger. Sneaky, vicious, and brutal.
Hobgoblins are all about discipline. Monk, War Wizard, War Cleric, Samurai Fighter all fit the bill. However, if there's something I'd LIKE to play as a Hobgoblin, it's Matt Mercer's Gunfighter. Why? Hobgoblins study the art and discipline of war. They want every edge. Every advantage. They want to bring honour to their banner. What better way than to be the race that invents guns. A hobgoblin that follows the heroes tale as told by "Eagle of the Ninth" where he seeks to reclaim a lost banner, and therefore his honour, and invents a new way to do it.

I'm currently playing a Goblin monk using my GMs homebrew Path of the Bullet (it is a gun n gunpowder r common type world so he made at least 6 subclasses, tho the fighter is a tweak of the Gunslinger that I believe was made by Matt Mercer which mostly was just getting rid of the misfires) but anyway, I completely forgot I had Nimble Escape for the first 4 sessions n then when I remembered I tried to use it n my speed to safely distract owl bears but the GM decided our trigger happy wizard whose player wasn't there would come fight with me cuz I had tried to stay quiet n hadn't explained that I was a distraction. So actually trying to fight them n thinking they had less speed than me I got downed pretty quick n 3 of the 4 others went down too tho every got back up pretty quick n no one died

The goblin also takes the warlocks darkness+devils sight combo to the next level. Play it as normal, but as a bonus action hide every round. Now the enemy has not only disadvantage to attack you but has to find you to even attempt an attack! Weakness is of course you will be weaker then charisma races at casting but the potential cheese is worth it.
Also with free disengage at level 1 you make a good booming blade user for those who don’t wanna eldritch blast everything. Heck even without devils sight the ability to hide for free every turn can be so powerful and time wasting for enemies it’ll make darkness worth it!

Goblin wizards are a lot of fun thematically, and by the time their lack of a racial +int mod comes into play you'll be getting your stat boosts and can probably afford a headband to up your intelligence anyway. I'm building one I plan to play as either a conjurer, illusionist, or abjurer and focus on supporting the party with buffs or debuffing the enemy and taking advantage of that bonus-action Hide ability, plus Fury of the Small will be a nice addition to any damage spell I cast once a long rest which makes it great for emergencies.
