Canon 5D Classic in Full Auto… my thoughts… Every time I use this camera, I fully enjoy the experience. I use the camera almost always in full manual mode, occasionally in aperture priority with single-point focus, and always using the central point to focus (all the other 8 points have proven to be very unreliable).
I found the experience in full auto very frustrating, mostly because I only had control over two components: the composition and the shutter button. Everything else was really in full auto.
The most frustrating aspect was the AI Focus; it was very random and kept focusing where it 'felt' where it wanted to, leading me to keep half-pressing until it randomly found the middle or at least focused in the area I needed.
Turning the Canon 5D Classic into a big point & shoot is not really for me. It was only fun for experimental purposes, but using it on the day without all the full controls I’m used to was quite an unpleasant experience that I won’t be repeating.
Has anyone else used the Canon 5D Classic in full auto? I would be happy to hear about your experience.

I usually turn it to full auto if I am handing it off to someone else since they won't know the rules of central focus point but that's usually a family portrait of sorts so you can assume the side focus points would do okay...that said, I still consider it a big point and shoot if I choose to run and gun in aperture priority because chances are I got my 40mm on the front so I am either at 2.8 or f8 depending on subject matter and of course only using the central focus point...

Hi Cody, I hope you are keeping well. Thanks for sharing your full-auto experience 👍 Such a good idea about using full-auto when handing off the camera to someone less experienced with a camera, I would have never thought of that 😎 Ah the 40mm, such a super lens 👌

I use auto mode on a trip to Manila and all photos are great, just shoot and shoot and it was a pleasure using this auto mode.

My experience was similar to yours. I recently had a 7-day long shoot with lots of kids and lots of activity, 10-12 hours a day. On the first day, I put the cameras on auto everything and jpeg. Because we had to upload pictures every evening, I thought this would be faster. Well, for the remainder of the week, I went back to my normal: either aperture priority or manual mode with auto ISO. I don't usually shoot wider than f4, so I use the center focus point, and do the focus and recompose method. At f4, you can still blur the background when needed, and your focus doesn't have to be as critical. I set the focus to One Shot and the drive to the slower multiple shot mode, with which I usually take a 2 or 3 shot burst. I shot over 7,000 images that week, and I almost never missed focus or exposure.
I learned to shoot on film cameras with manual focus, so I employ the same techniques I learned many years ago, and it has served me well.
The best thing to do in photography is to find what works best for you, and then practice it over and over until you can do it in your sleep.
    Thanks for posting another video!

Hi Robert, I hope you're well. Thank you for sharing your experience, over 7,000 shots in one week, man you were busy 💪 This camera's focus, center point only, is immaculate the accuracy is impeccable. Enjoy the rest of your week 👍

Thanks for this nice and interesting video (have never shot in full auto yet either) and by the way great background music. 5D Classic has certainly a unique rendering (I think it is about the combination of incredible color rendition, microcontrast, level of saturation, sharpness/detail and capable jpeg processor) and I have always thought it perfectly suits the street photography genre. I have a 6D that I also love, but do not discard getting a 5D classic if I have the opportunity. Also admire the 5D II warmer colors depending on the situation.

Thank you for your comments, appreciated 👍 The 5D Classic is a camera that will always be in my collection, I may add another for backup though 🙂 Good luck finding one on the secondhand market, the more years that go by they will certainly be harder to find unfortunately.

I still like those Canon colors, particuarly the red of the fire hydrant. It looks to give very reliable exposure from the shots you showed - how often did it get the exposure really quite wrong in Auto mode?

Hi, yes, even in full 'AI Mode' the colours are still pretty acceptable, Canon Colours indeed 👍 I found on average the auto exposure worked really well. There were no real exposure disasters, but on some shots the camera did like to sway towards the highlights a little too much 🧐

Outstanding representation of a marvellous camera and lens. This gives a “point and shoot” a new meaning.
