I worked briefly for a car dealership in the 80's. I knew there was some shady stuff in car sales, but I had no idea. They were selling a popular vehicle at 25% over retail claiming matts and, stripes, scotchguard and wax was an upgrade package. We were not permitted to offer these vehicles without this package. I only lasted a few weeks, as I just felt terrible about the few I sold. Never worked in car sales again.

I have to say, I am in the process of purchasing a new vehicle, I have been shopping all around the country for the best deal I can find. Finally found one, (I thought) then, I remembered TFL recommending a dealership that didn’t upsell, no dealer fee’s or BS… so I reached out to them, told them I found them because of your recommendation. I am waiting for my Vehicle to arrive in July then I will fly to Colorado to pick it up! ! BEST DEAL in the Country! Easiest car purchase I have EVER made! THANK YOU TFL!

I’ve dealt with probably 6 different dealers for my cars. 5 of were mostly the same.. not horrible and nice people but I still felt like a piece of meat walking into shark infested waters. And the sales people never seemed to truly know much about their cars. Then the 6th, a bmw dealer, won me over. I felt zero pressure and the sales staff never a lot about the cars. My salesman had worked there 20 years and was telling me all sorts of stories of various things while looking over the cars. He had tons of useful advice while I was deciding on color. He even stopped in on a Sunday to get pictures of my new car when the truck arrived and texted them to me.. I didn’t even ask.

I 100% agree with cross state shopping for a vehicle. I live in CT and after a horrible ordeal with CarMax, my 14 year old son and I found a great 50k mile F150 Super-crew at Superior Ford in Minnesota through Ford's online "Ford Blue Advantage" site. We flew to MN where the salesman picked us up at the airport, (taking that part of the logistical concern off my shoulders). We had a great experience at the dealer as they were very professional and down to earth. We ended up with an amazing truck and my son and I were able to experience a fun adventure in the flight and the 1300+ mile drive back to CT.

The N**San dealership in Hendersonv**le, NC had a 2022 Nissan Frontier SV listed for $27K. It was 2WD, basic truck without any options. The out the door price was 36K. $2000 “market adjustment “ ( on a used vehicle) $2000 clean up fee, $1000 surcharge because I wasn’t trading anything in, $1000 surcharge because I wasn’t financing with them. $999 doc fee. I forget what the other fees were. Dealerships like this prey on people with poor credit who think they are limited in being able to get financing. Until we as consumers start walking away from scammers like this they will continue to do this.

Almost went with a broker because it was so miserable, I was willing to pay someone who does this for a living $700 to get me a good deal. Then tried one more dealer as a last attempt before committing to the broker, and got "lucky". Found someone who didn't act like it was massively inconvenient to sell me a car!

Back in 22’ I was looking to purchase or build a specific 23’ 4Runner TRD OR. A local dealer had one coming in. I went to put a deal together for it, until they stated they have a mandatory $5,000 mark up. That dealer is Toyota World of Newton New Jersey. They would not budge on it so I told them to shove it. I called a ex co-worker at a dealer I worked for who just happened to get the exact truck I was looking for. Towne Toyota in Ledgewood NJ. Went and bought the next day because they were willing to wheel and deal at a cash price. Long story short don’t fall for the market adjustment/price BS. Find yourself a good dealer who will actually work with you.

I bought my first car by myself this year. I’ve bought/traded 5 or 6 cars from dealerships. I always got my Dad to come with me because dealerships (in my experience) are ready to take advantage of you if they can. I bought an EV so there were availability issues but I had my local dealership turn me away because they already had a bunch of people looking for the same car. Another dealership had one and I was driving 30 minutes to see it and they called me 10 minutes away to say they sold it. Bring on ordering a car online and avoid the salesman all together.

Nathan is correct. There is a large movement right here on RUclips to expose the tricks and deceptions of car dealerships and salespeople.
There is a father and son channel I frequent. The father is a retired dealership sales manager with over 40-years experience. He has the inside scoop.
There are plenty other RUclips channels that give car-buying advice and arm consumers with techniques on how to negotiate a deal, what tricks to expect, and how to counter them.

I just recently got a Rivian & while it wasn’t a perfect buying experience it was still the best & most seamless buying experience I’ve had outside of Carmax. I absolutely hate dealing with traditional dealers & all of their games. I have always had a good buying experience with Carmax and after selecting the cars I wanted to test drive before even getting to the store the buying process usually only took about 45 minutes to an hour.
With Rivian the only hiccup was something having to be overridden by my guide to complete the next step in the process but even that was a simple fix.
I will never buy from a traditional dealer again unless they start making some serious changes.

You are 💯 right about dealers making big $ on financing. If you are going to pay cash, never say so until the very end. Negotiate the price of the car, your trade, etc. and then, once those things are *in writing* say, "I've decided not to finance. Please give me your wire transfer information and I'll start the transaction with my bank".
Once they hear this, they know it is game over. No extended warranty, no life insurance, no protection package, etc. While those might not raise a monthly payment much, a cash buyer sees every detail. They will be very disappointed, but they are locked in now.

Mostly bs stuff. We said goodbye and walked away. Called another Honda dealer that had the car we wanted, I specifically asked are there any dealer installed options on the car. I'm not paying for anything. He said no options. Went there and sure enough they had the same stuff as the last dealer. I called them on it and after them talking to their manager, they didn't charge me for any of it. They just hope people won't say anything and just pay it. When I bought my truck, I didn't have to deal with that because I ordered it so they couldn't add anything to it. They tried to sell me stuff, but I expected that.

There are times that l have just walked out because of the vibe l got from the person. Others I've stayed and ended up buying. One time l was looking at vehicles in the lot, and it was raining quite heavily. A salesman came out and asked if he could help me with anything at all. Not pushy, just casually asked, even though he was getting soaked. I ended up buying an F-150 that very day. Great buying experience.

An enjoyable podcast. It's terrihly unfortunate that so many have had negative experiences while purchasing vehicles. It's exacerbated where I live as two or three companies control essentially all of the dealerships. Consumers are frustrated and gouged, but options are limited due to the market control. A small example, yes, but it certainly highlights how a lack of competition (and less-than-scrupulous dealers) can truly sour buyers.

Bought my first, and only new car, a 2001 Honda Accord from a dealership in Queens, NY. All was going well until the meeting with the fianace guy. They advertised certain APR. Now, my credit score was 850. The finance guy is telling me he can’t give me that rate, for whatever BS reason. I was literally in a screaming match with the guy! lol finally I threatened to walk out. All of a sudden it’s a different story. God I hate shopping for cars!

I think buying cars is a fun challenge. You know they are going to hold on to the money. So do some research email several or eight different dealers, agree w/sales manager with price, be ready to walk. After reading this, i think my idea of "fun" is torture. 😂

90% reason why I got a Tesla. Just hope my ram doesn’t die and if it does I’ll switch to just renting a truck when I need it. Makes more sense to invest that outrageous 60-100k truck money and once in a while rent

Traditional dealers are a ripoff where I live because the state allows them to charge very high dealer fees. So any difference in price between Carmax and a dealer is wiped out. I’d much rather buy from Carmax.

There is a reason dealerships spend millions and millions of dollars in lobbying to be able to keep their business model. They know it's predatory and they need help to be able to keep that train rolling.

Awhile back my nephew, my eldest sister's kid, had a horrible experience when he tried to buy a Tacoma.
They effectively detained him by not returning his keys and having a burly salesman blocking the finance doorway. Kept trying to get him to pay extra for the new car warranty, etc.
Not an extended warranty, the new car warranty.
He called in my other sister.
It's funny how the BS stops when a middle aged woman in shorts and sandals says those three magic words: "I'm a lawyer"
She got my nephew out of there and took the paperwork they were trying to coerce him into signing.
If you're wondering why be didn't call his mom, she would have chosen violence.
