Just tell them I'm not paying for this stuff, most salesmen say "oh, it's negotiable of course". They just hope to keep as much of that add-on in play for their profit. Anywhere from $899 to $2500! And then there's the "doc fee". What a joke that is. Many states have a cap of $150 or so on that, not here..as high as $995.
Especially when tommy said he bought a car with low fees from a Phoenix dealership, and the salesman said, "Why aren't you calling them?" I would have hung up.
Man, I’m seriously impressed how cool you kept it. If I had a car salesman say any of that to me I’d seriously loose it and walk, file a complaint, etc…. The whole process sucks.
That wasn't a negotiation, it was a verbal war and sparing match that requires incredible levels of patience to see it through to the end without hanging up in disgust. This guy was in the business for 10 years so he was able to play the game, but even with that he got insulted numerous times by the salesman. The average person is ill-equipped for this level of negotiating (which is really arguing). There's a reason that dealerships have such horrible reputations.
To be fair, Yes, the average person is ill-equipped. The best strategy an average individual can take in my unprofessional opinion, focus on the out the door number with everything included and walk away if they add fees. Simply state "remove the fees or I am walking". If they refuse, walk away.
I ordered a brand new vehicle and they tried to hit me with almost $4000 in fees. I went absolutely ape shit and me and the finance manager got into an altercation and they threatened to call the police on me so disrespectful.
I genuinely had fun listening to this negotiation. I was angry, I even zoned out for a minute and rewind because I was thinking about punching Chris in the face. Then I was happy, I learned a lot about my emotional management through this interaction. The condescending remarks from Chris and the nicknames I would have lost all my cool. The patience from Tommy also made me angry because Chris represents what is wrong with our country and I wanted to see more push back for that type of behavior in a negotiation as the customer. Then I felt proud of Tommy for being so patient and after all of that still making a deal with that guy was very unexpectedly rewarding. The level of emotional intelligence and control was great I’m really glad I found this video! Thank you for the content, bubba!
You’re a better negotiator than I am. I couldn’t have tolerated the disrespectful and condescending remarks and kept my cool. I could feel my blood pressure going up just listening to that.
He wouldn’t have said any of that face to face and we all know it. The fact this conversation went for as long as it did is insane. Went from buddy to bubba to bro at the end.
I have a friend that was buying a new truck. He emailed every dealership within a couple of hundred miles with exactly what he wanted and told them he would take the lowest bid. He got a pretty awesome deal and signed all the papers remotely before going to pick the truck up. I told my father-in law this story and he did the same thing. He had to drive a couple hours, but to save thousands it was well worth it for him.
Soon as he said Valley I KNEW it was Cardinale Way 😂 I sold for them when the Mazda 6 refresh came out in 2013. They weren’t anywhere near this bad back then. They made a huge change and hired guys from Can Tuyl to start running everything and here we are. I left and got out of there lol

I imagine he treated this guy worse because he was sitting their bragging about his vast car sales experience while trying to bend the dealer over and f**k him. You could tell the salesman was getting pissed.
If dealers could sell well over MSRP in 2022, they can sell well under MSRP when inventory is building up, which is now! Oh and btw, they have fooled people enough in 2022 to keep their lights on for another couple years
I think you both deserve what you get, both are kinda sneaky and think your smarter than the other . This is why people hate the whole experience and the industry needs to change .

This is why I love the car edge vids that show the trauma the car industry is going through.as the consumer we are priced out and then expected to just suck it up . Have a great day bubba
Any stressful situation that leads to avoidance behaviour could be called trauma, yeah. It's not a big deal to say that something was traumatic, aka stressful enough to make you never do something again. That fits the bill. It doesn't mean that you are lying on the ground in fetal position just thinking about it, it just means it was awful and you will never go through it again.
Because those sales numbers are the best he's ever done he's not doing that monthly. Not based on the time frame that cars are sitting on the lot at all dealers. Mazda is great car brand but they're not burning up the market selling cars he needs that deal especially on a new vehicle vs a used one. Goes to show doing your research and standing your ground on the deal you want gets you what you want.
Something I learned in sales many years ago: treat people the way you want to be treated, be honest and do what you say you’re going to do. It is really that simple. Treat people right and success will come.

I asked them to remove it and they did which I appreciated. They still gave me the stuff though but didn't charge me for it. Just goes to show how pointless it is. It's just them trying to squeeze more money out of people who won't question it.
I went to buy a new Honda CRV and the salesman was giving me a problem with mark ups ($8,000 over msrp) and wouldn’t remove it. He also made a comment about my cloths. Which really angered me. I’ve never been happier with the buying experience of Tesla and the car is amazing too.
It was kind of the same with me. I went to a Honda dealership trying to replace my awful Honda HRV with a CRV. Asked for the base LX trim and the salesman tried to push the hybrid top trim with another $5k in add-ons. He mentioned all the cool tech in the car were worth the extra $$$ and that I would be making a huge mistake going with the base trim. I thanked him but I couldn't hold myself and told him that by that price I would get a Tesla model Y and not a Honda. I miss my 2019 model 3😥

I bought a few cars in my lifetime, i always end up buying the cars from a dealer that don’t talk too much. Frankly the more the car salesman talk the less i want to buy the car.
Bingo! I have been in sales for 25 years, and I find it annoying when salespeople adopt a disingenuous approach, following customers around and talking incessantly, agreeing with everything, and pretending to have experienced similar life situations… Unfortunately, directors and VPs often favor this behavior, likely because they either do not understand how sales really work or have not worked on the sales floor since the 1980s, clinging to outdated methods. My style is to provide customers with the space and time they need to consider their options. I always inform them of my location in case they need help, rather than hovering a few feet away like a vulture, making them uncomfortable. I am not concerned if they leave without making a purchase. If a salesperson feels the need to shadow a customer out of fear they might leave without buying, they are perhaps not suited for a career in sales. Sales executives often forget how irritating it is to be followed and repeatedly asked the same questions every few minutes, yet they expect you to do it to your customers. When I visit a dealership or furniture store, I always politely inform the salesperson that they do not need to stay close while I browse; I will seek them out if I have questions or am ready to buy. I also suggest they inform their managers of this if questioned about why they are not shadowing me. Most salespeople comply, but there are still some who cannot resist being overly attentive, believing that constant chatter makes them effective salespeople. While some customers may appreciate that approach, the majority do not. Times have changed, with the internet making it easy to access product information and reviews from the comfort of your home or phone, on your own time and at your own place. There is a reason brick-and-mortar stores are becoming a thing of the past, and it’s not because people want to wait a few days for their product to ship 🤣. It's because they hate dealing with the average sales rep. It is pretty sad when people are willing to wait two days to two weeks for their product just to avoid dealing with that annoying, hotshot salesperson. These are the same people who will say it’s pricing that's killing brick-and-mortar stores, but go compare the prices, and they are usually the exact same-or if they are different, it’s not enough of a difference to make it worth waiting for it to ship. It's the comfort of knowing you don't have to deal with that douche sales rep that makes the wait worth it. The key to successful sales is to be knowledgeable about the product; the rest will naturally fall into place. Oh and always follow the K.I.S.S method, Keep It Simple Stupid!
I bought a new truck in May 2021, never had any of this issue with the salesman or finance dept at the dealership. I got a really good deal on the truck, a lower interest rate (2.99% from 5.99% advertised), payments lower than the the actual low range I mentioned to the salesguy. I was honest with him, told him what I could afford and we worked it out. Almost 3 yrs later, I have less than 25% left on the payments on a 6 yr term and the truck will be paid for this year. I didn't have to talk to the head of sales, didn't have the back and forth on numbers. Told them I had a trade in and cash to make up to $10K to start the deal. I went looking on a Saturday for the truck, talked numbers and by Weds I got the call the truck was mine. Be up front, if they want your business they won't make you jump through hoops and demand a fake perfect review of the deal.
I have walked out of many dealers like this. If you have to order a new car without the add ons, someone will sell it to you. This dealer is so pompous I wouldn’t buy from it if he gave it to me for 1/2 price.
Just got a 2024 truck with 0 add-ons and a discount. First 3 dealers laughed at me but the 4th gave me an honest deal. You just have to find a good dealership and they're very far and few between. Went back and double checked the sticker. Got 11.5% off and no add-ons.
I went to the local Nissan dealership to look at a *USED* 2022 Frontier. It was listed on CarGurus at $27K which made it a *great deal* according to CarGuru's ratings. By the time the *fees* were added to the price of the truck the price was over $36K, $9000 higher than the advertised price. $1000 more since I wasn't trading anything in, $1000 more for not financing through them, $2000 *market adjustment* ( this is a used vehicle ) $2900 reconditioning fee? $999 Doc Fee, and other miscellaneous fees. Needless to say, I walked. Car sales are declining and fees like this play a role in that decline Side note: This dealership has a F rating by the BBB. Not surprising.

Advertising at one price but then adding to the price if there isn’t a trade in and if financing isn’t arranged through them. Lesson learned.

They refused to perform warranty work on my new Mazda, and the service department turned me away at 7:00 am one morning when I brought my car in for routine service. The Mazda dealerships are notoriously bad and treat customers like dirt after the sale! 😢
It’s a buyers market now. Interest rates are sky high, so vehicles are sitting. Plain & simple! Dealers have to beg for business now. The average time of inventory on lots has gone through the roof. Don’t even consider paying a dollar over 88% sticker :)
I can respect either side. It’s a hustle. This is one person trying not to give away his hard earned money and other trying to earn it. Both sides are impressive. Good job.
Dealer fees are not taxable ( a portion is ) the smart thing to do was simply take the higher percentage discount on the MSRP and this will drop the taxes and the bottom line. Getting a lower cost is the first thing to do. I was actually shocked how much of a discount, but it was the end of the month. Remember, dealers are actually buying the cars they have on property and will have to pay interest on cars they bought from their own manufacturer after 30 days. I don't do the out the door price... You will get closer to your out the door price buy doing the lost amount paid for car due to the tax amount dropping and reflecting on bottom line. I do care where they show the money taken off to reach the goal. In this case, if they removed the non taxable fees by the $1000, but only offered 10% instead of the 12%, then this would have cost the buyer more money in the end.
I hate dealerships. We need more No Haggle dealerships where the price you see is the price you pay. That’s it! Why sit at a dealership and haggle and stress out for an entire day?

So true, thank you so much for the compliments. I had a lot of fun with it, it's a game for me.

To be fair, Yes, the average person is ill-equipped. The best strategy an average individual can take in my unprofessional opinion, focus on the out the door number with everything included and walk away if they add fees. Simply state "remove the fees or I am walking". If they refuse, walk away.

Yes....that nitrogen is expensive! Also timeshare are a great investment
I ordered a brand new vehicle and they tried to hit me with almost $4000 in fees. I went absolutely ape shit and me and the finance manager got into an altercation and they threatened to call the police on me so disrespectful.
Good news! We can knock $500 off that undercoat. Never seen my manager do that before!

Currie motors in Frankfort IL tried this. Got pissed when I told him I didn’t want add ons. I bought two cars last week because other dealers were flexible.
Lived in Romeoville and owned a business in New Lenox. Went to Currie Motors 5x to buy a vehicle. Bought 5 vehicles elsewhere. Attitude was wrong. Switched to Southoak Dodge and bought Fleet. Knew the G.M. He left and I stopped going there also. Same problem, Attitude. No dealer/ customer loyalty and always earning the hate. Same everywhere.

Ironically enough i went to get a cx5 and they had $3k in add on fees. It was everything nobody asks for some theft tracker, paint protection, and some other pointless crap.
I walked out.
I went home and ordered a Tesla model Y performance. I didn’t have to argue with anyone, feel embarrassed, confrontational or hear insults.

Bingo! I have been in sales for 25 years, and I find it annoying when salespeople adopt a disingenuous approach, following customers around and talking incessantly, agreeing with everything, and pretending to have experienced similar life situations…
Unfortunately, directors and VPs often favor this behavior, likely because they either do not understand how sales really work or have not worked on the sales floor since the 1980s, clinging to outdated methods.
It costs bro $32,000 in light fees every month. Probably why he has to resort to sketchy "fees" with every sale. He should get some new bulbs
I'm sure this is with "new bulbs". At a 300 a month car store, this is a very normal electric bill.

Exactly, negotiation is a game of chess.
