Well done Matt, thanks for this review! Talking about your grading, on my iPad your lips and eyelids, your cheeks and nose are lacking a bit of red, overall a not very healthy look 😅 But hey, maybe it’s just my screen;)
The 55 1.8 is still one of the best lenses for Sony IMO (2nd only to that 24mm). I really think you should rent it out and do a vid on it to show people they don’t have to spend this mad money. However I am thinking of getting this 1.2, will going from 1.8 to 1.2 make my film making better? I think so 😂
I really wish Sony would do an updated 50/55mm budget option, similar to their 35mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8. Something with less focus breathing, and up to date AF, plus a focus wheel with less (or hopefully zero) focus acceleration. My biggest gripe with the 55mm 1.8 being the end all mid range option is how far the closest focusing is, I never thought itd be a problem until using it in the real world, plus the focus acceleration makes manual focus difficult, and the focusing is just a bit slow to top it off.
sony 55 Zeiss lens still best second sony lens ........with out thinking you can press the button you get best photos its like sony 90mm every photo is high light chromatic aberration wide open my ass the lens at the moment cheap and light weight
Heya there. Thanks for the honest opinion. I was thinking of selling my sigma 35 1.4 art and sony 85 1.8 and buy (addming way more) a sony 50 1.2. You convinced me. I love the bokeh of this 1.2 and the quality. That way, i will have 2 (just like you) favourite apertures (105 2.8 sigma macro and this sony). thanks
I think I'm gonna go ahead and stick with my old cheap 50 1.8... Especially now that the AF works well. I'm not about that G Master life yet. I bet that Sony is going to release like a 40 or 45mm G like their 20mm.
I love my 24 and 50 gm….insta-sub as soon as you said they were your fav. I sold my 55 due to the destructive CA. It’s so bad and annoying. I didn’t mind it in stills, but video, ehhhhhh
Can you elaborate more for those who don't own the 135mm? I'm about to purchase the 50 1.2 and would love to hear more. I would love something with beautiful lens flaring.
@@lisamaefilms2774 The 135mm 1.8 was one of the first GM lens to really get high marks and has very little flaws. It renders beatifully with pleasing bokeh, very little CA, focuses super fast (fast enough for sports and wildlife) and will take advantage of the A1 30 fps, and has execellent seperation due to the focal length. It just has a certain look that is hard to describe. I would say it's dreamy. I dont own a 70-200mm because I'd just find reasons to use the 135mm instead and use crop mode when I need 200mm. The 50 1.2 is the 50mm version except the seperation is not as much. Of course it's also faster.
Great review, my current lenses are the 16-35 GM, 20mm G, the 50mm 1.2 GM looks very tempting, but will have to see what my needs as a videographer/photographer are, as I’m pretty new to the Sony cameras and lenses.
Its sad to say, but Sony native lenses have really good build quality, sharpness & Auto-focus performance, but they seem to lack a lot of character across the board :(
Agreed, but I've also found that to be true of many newer lenses, unfortunately. I think the more these camera companies pursue ultra sharp "technically" perfect lenses, the less character we will see. :(
@@whoismatt Hopefully they can perfect it, and then start focussing on character! Also - I tried the Zeiss 55mm and though it was sharp/good auto focus, it has a very long minimum focussing distance which can be tough. Something to keep in mind! Thanks for all your informative videos Matt, I watch them for the camera's and the beard
The 55 1.8 is legit Matt. I shot with the Canon 50 1.2 for the last 10 + years and of course loved that lens. I"ve been shooting Canon + Sony (A7 iii) for the last 2 years and finally sold the Canon 50 1.2 just two months ago to get the 55 1.8 as I REALLY needed video AF to happen. All I can say is WOW. Totally impressed. Just as the Canon 50 created magic, so does this Zeiss 55, yet it's a different magic with that tiny hint of more compression.
Hi.. good review. based on your experience. 35mm F1.4 and 50mm 1.4 or 1.2, which do you use more often to take video of an event? the frequency of use of the lens. still deciding between 35 or 50mm which needs to be bought first. any suggestions? thanks
I'd love to find out the reason why you prefer a 50mm lens over an 85mm lens. Is it the look of the resulting images or is it a matter of practicality for weddings?
I have only one doubt after watching this video. Thinking how fast the workflow in this type of video is not much better to use a 24-70 2.8 Sony GM? How much is the difference for you between 1.4 and 2.8 on a sunny day or in general? Thanks for your answer!
The Sony lens I use most often is the 600mm GM (handheld), so the weight and price of this lens don't seem much of problem to me :-) So far, I love what I'm getting from the 50 1.2.
Ive been loving the small and affordable Sony 40mm F2.5 this year, I was using the 55 f1.8 as my main lens but now prefer the 40mm. I enjoy the extra width in my frame now that im shooting all 4k and can always crop. Yes the Bokeh can leave something to be desired sometimes but F2.5 on a full frame is still very nice.
The 55 1.8 is great as an alternative. BUT (as Matt say) :) it is 55 and 1.8, so for video shooters looking for a fast 50mm on a a budget I can recommend the Samyang/Rokinon 50 1.4 FE AF lens. It is very unreliable in terms of focus if you are shooting stills with the newer cameras, but for video the AF works. It is audible, the performance is not the best one but it is usable for sure, when it grabs focus it stays in focus. The optical quality is actually pretty good, it is seriously fast. Almost half a stop faster than the FE 50 1.4 Planar and dirty cheap. I bought mine for 300 euro in Europe on the second hand market. I love it.
A person making money with their camera will have no problem spending the money for a top quality lens. For me the 50mm or 50mm range is perfect. I love my Sony/Zeiss 55mm 1.8 and I love my Minolta Rokkor 58mm 1.4 manual lens and my 55mm Takumar 1.4 lens. I have to Old Canon 58mm and 55mm f1.2 lenses but neither is good enough for my needs. So far the best is the Sony/Zeiss 55mm 1.8 and soon to be Sony 50mm 1.2 GM. I rock my Sony 100mm STF GM on my A1 and don't bat an eye on the weight issues. I is what it is. The 50mm will be a welcome addition to my Sony Camera Collection. I will be retiring my old vintage manual lenses.

Nikon 50 1.2 has zero breathing & almost no flaring (does not lose contrast when directly shooting at sun), but as you said it's very heavy (better light transmission than sony IIRC). Nikon 50mm 1.8s & Sony's zeiss 55m f1.8 is the way for video with af, but I prefer your Contax Zeiss setup.
I'm pretty much all day long on a gimbal with this lens on weddings. it can get kind of heavy but i'm in love with the look, and the auto focus is crazy good, I'm tracking people constantly on 1.2, unbelievable.
My only gripe with the 55mm 1.8 is the lack of buttons. I have to reset my way of thinking on the fly after using my GM lenses for a certain period of time.
Really thanks for this video !!!! What do you think about the Sony Zeiss Plannar 50 1.4?, does it have focus breathing also? i really need one 50 mm, or maybe i can consider the 55 1.8?
I have the Nikon 50mm 1.2 S, it's actually not as bad holding it for weddings that some people might think. The image quality is STELLAR, and practically no focus-breathing.
I have 3 lenses the 12 -24 f2.8 gm the 24 - 70 f2.8 gm and the 70 - 200 f2.8 gm admittedly they are a little heavy but i figured those 3 should cover just about any circumstance
C'mon Matt, you can't get a Rolls Royce for a Chevy price. And all that heavy glass doesn't just get you 1.2, it makes that auto focus performance possible.
Hey Matt, I want to purchase your LUT pack. I shoot on an a7iii, do you have a doc that talks about what picture profile and custom settings you use to get the most out of the luts?
i really loved my zeiss planar 50 1.4 but when i touched this… i just needed to get the 1.2 hahahaha. i felt bad selling my old lens but really love this new gm 1.2. now if we only stop locking down here in australia that i can finally use it on weddings :)
I have the Zeiss 50 1.4 still in it’s unwrapped box 📦 My use case will be interviews and talking heads on tripod in the studio. Am I better off replacing with the 50 1.2 and if so can you overcome the focus breathing by adjusting the AF settings in the A7S3?

Pretty sure I heard the a7IV next to me laugh at 8:07 🤨
I would also sacrifice the 1.2 for lighter 1.4 version
Multi-day long wedding? Daayyyyummmmm 💀
Seems like a nice lens. Just not the biggest fan of 50mm
This lense kept back focusing on lights when u was shooting a music video (scene was dark) other than that is a great lense..
Strange, I didn’t have that issue when I was filming a wedding and the couple was backlit 🤷♂️
Really thanks for this video !!!! What do you think about the Sony Zeiss Plannar 50 1.4?, does it have focus breathing also? i really need one 50 mm, or maybe i can consider the 55 1.8?
I would get the 55mm
I have the Nikon 50mm 1.2 S, it's actually not as bad holding it for weddings that some people might think. The image quality is STELLAR, and practically no focus-breathing.
Nice! Get a free workout too 😜 ( I do too when I use my Glidecam and its all one armed holding)
Id love to see a video about your autofocus settings!
Good idea! I'll add it to my list of videos :)
@@whoismatt Awesome!
I just bought this lens, it was finally in stock! Lol
I have 3 lenses the 12 -24 f2.8 gm the 24 - 70 f2.8 gm and the 70 - 200 f2.8 gm admittedly they are a little heavy but i figured those 3 should cover just about any circumstance
👍💪
C'mon Matt, you can't get a Rolls Royce for a Chevy price.
And all that heavy glass doesn't just get you 1.2, it makes that auto focus performance possible.
😂 true
Hey Matt, I want to purchase your LUT pack. I shoot on an a7iii, do you have a doc that talks about what picture profile and custom settings you use to get the most out of the luts?
Hey! Yes the luts come with a lesson that covers how to use them and what picture profiles to use etc. :)
Your beard…..
🧔🏻
Filming my first wedding next month with my a6600…any lens suggestions?
Sigma 18-35!
This was super helpful. Love your videos. Keep up the great work!
i really loved my zeiss planar 50 1.4 but when i touched this… i just needed to get the 1.2 hahahaha. i felt bad selling my old lens but really love this new gm 1.2. now if we only stop locking down here in australia that i can finally use it on weddings :)
Hahaha!
