To be honest I’m not too disappointed when „cheaper“ lenses don’t have autofocus. To me it’s better when the manufacturer mainly focuses on the image quality and the build quality. It requires a certain budget that allows the manufacturer to implement a good and reliable autofocus. So a certain amount of your limited budget is spent on an autofocus system that probably isn’t fun to work with and will lead to unusable footage. And since professional filmmaking is all about manual focus, this should be no big deal anyway
@@lolly166541 No kidding, I had the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 for Sony and that thing was a nightmare. My other Samyang lenses are great, the 35mm f/1.8 nails focus on the eye wide open for like 80-90% of shots. But that damn 14mm would get maybe 1/5 shots in focus and couldn't track a walking speed subject.

I've had a Canon 50mm f/1.2L for over a decade now and it's always been my absolute favorite lens for all its dreamy qualities. Switched to Sony a few years ago (A7III, A7SIII, FX3 but still use all my EF glass from time to time) and just recently picked up the 50mm f/1.2 GM. All I have to say is that it's the best 50mm I've ever used without a doubt. Incredible autofocus wide open, even with fast moving subjects (I film automotive racing for a living). Pretty much zero chromatic aberration, which is shocking after using the Canon version for so many years. It's a brilliant lens and I was hesitant at the price for a while, but the first time I used it I very much understood that it's worth it. Such lenses often sharpen up at around f/2.8, hence they aren't completely worthless. Only way to go faster on a budget imo is to get a good deal on a used (maybe vintage) lens.

thanks for doing this comparison. I realize you're probably not shooting on the m50 anymore. but would an EF 85mm with speedbooster get pretty close to these 50mm lenses?
Love the vid! One question, are you going to do a review of the Meike 35mm T 2.1 FF Cinema Prime lens in the future? I saw some videos and said it was great I just want to learn more about it. Love your work!
The Meike is not bad at all! It has a similar flat rendering like the Samyang cine lenses. Does this Meike have a colour shift when you stop it down? Thanks for the video Gene!
The 3d pop/depth (Micro Contrast?) on the Mieke got me everytime, it's darn good and is noticeable side by side. The worst performer though not in this test, are Sigma Art lenses although clinically sharp, are as flat as taking a picture printed on a cardboard.
Would've really been interesting to see how the new canon RF 50mm f 1.2 performs, as the new Lenses from Canon seem to pretty much all be realllly good.
Tbh, you really should have tested the RF 1.2. the EF was released in 2006 and the Sony was released last year. Still a good video though and get the idea across.
Yeah, I stopped watching the moment I realized you're using the old Canon 50mm. Everyone knows that lens was problematic for sharpness, and also that the new RF 50 mm F 1.2 is clearly superior. Gotta make it fair fight man
I think that its there for a middle ground item. If they had the RF mount one then it wouldn’t be much of a 3 way fight, it would just be a demolition by the 2k+ lenses
I think the main problem is the title. The Canon should be considered a middle ground (an outdated one though, I don't think it's the right lens for this comparison either way). But the title makes it sound that he's going to compare the best lens from Canon by mentioning the "L", while, although it's technically correct and it's mentioned during the video that it's not their best and most updated lens, it comes out as just as a poor value middle ground. But again, there's not really much more "middle ground" if you want f1.2. You want an autofocus 1.2 even with a poor value optically wise but can't reach $2000? There's not really other options, but I think that at least it should've been consirered more at second hand pricing. That value is much more reasonable. Or honestly, if you want a middle ground, sacrifice 1.2 for 1.4, as mentioned on the video. 1.2 is not worth that many compromises IMO.
To be honest I’m not too disappointed when „cheaper“ lenses don’t have autofocus. To me it’s better when the manufacturer mainly focuses on the image quality and the build quality. Try an old fd canon 1.2l. Cheap back then. Or a 80s .95 noctilux. Opps.
I'll buy the MEIKE! And I will use it with a Metabones adapter on my GH6. Think it will surprise me...
yeah but what about the Arri 50mm T1.3, a bargain at only $22k or so?
Great comparison! I want to see that Sony vs. the new Canon RF now! lol Oh, by the way, way to handle a sponsor spot! Kept me watching all the way through it!!!
Man, I live out here and this is always nice to see on YT.
Plot twist- an interesting lens comparison accidentally becomes a Sony advertisement
Gee imagine that from several different "content creators" here on mediocre tube
Memphis May Fire shirt, what a throwback.
It’s just now when you do the comparisons between lenses or cameras with Dylan being inside of it, I’m focusing more on his marketing ability that gets better everytime😂
thanks for doing this comparison.
While I do like Matti Happoia, I honestly can't see how he has more subscribers than our favorite potato.
RF is the best 50 1.2 on the market. Of course all the CA is addressed it's built for Mirrorless.
Thanks for the comparison, I wonder if the Meike is better than the TTArtisan 50mm 1.4
Tbh, you really should have tested the RF 1.2. the EF was released in 2006 and the Sony was released last year. Still a good video though and get the idea across.
nice. would love to see how the RF 1.2 performs compared to the Sony~
Gene wish you had the Canon RF on this comparison.
I’m in the neighborhood if you want to borrow mine! I’d like to see how it matches up with the G.
that canon ef 1.2l lens is 21 years old. it performs really well considering it has been around longer than some pro photographers..
why not use the RF version?
I like how hes casually watching the Super Bowl in the background 7:16
Good explanation, I'm shocked I got it correct between A B and C.
That ad break was genius
I'm actually curious every time for the sponsorsegment. Cracks me up every time 😂
and the genius behind the copywriting is just 🏆
I have 30$ 7artistants 1.2f, 25mm lens and it's great!
1:47 Kari knows good music.
Would be cool se a comparison with Sony G Master and Canon RF model.
way of telling different. I learnt lot.
