its 2024 now and youre still helping a lot of people, specially new/amateur photographers or some like me that is starting photography from hobby now a side hustle and hopefully a pro, but one thing i want to mention R.I.P. Replay button from 2:35- 2:37 this 5 seconds made me now your number 1 fan and subscriber. thank you again for all your videos. it is very very helpful for us beginners
What this actually shows me is that 1) Your'e an amazign photographer 2) it doesn't really matter what lens you're using, if you know what you're doing. Btw, that Black & white shot with the 135mm was breathtaking...
I have always been struggling between the 85 and the 50 on my second body, your simple exercise has made my decision. 50mm for indoor, 85mm for outdoor. No idea why I didn't see that before.
Great information and sample shots. It's shocking that you only have 1K+ subscribers. Keep the great content and you're bound to have many more before you know it.
Thanks dude! I’m literally taking first baby steps here on RUclips - started in mid Jan this year. Also - love your channel, I’m into drawing but so far I use my skills only for those thumbnails 😂
I am that photographer that just loves compression and higher focal lengths. I shot a whole wedding using the sigma 105 f1.4 art lens. But normally I use the 85 and 50mm for all weddings. I just did a small wedding and it was in a little pavilion and all I could use was a 50 mm and a 35 mm. It took me right out of my comfort zone and once you start going so wide you lose that nice beautiful Bokeh for wider photos. I was all excited to use my new 135 mm F 1.8 GM but not at this little venue. I did get to use it for the bride & groom poses. If I can I try to use 85mm for everything, group photos and I just love how it looks
You did a great job showcasing the differences between these lenses. For your example scenario at 14:40, I feel like the 85mm slightly nudged out the 50mm for the best image, but 85mm is harder to "run-and-gun" with for an event like a wedding so a 50mm is a better early career purchase in my opinion. Though, Sony 85 1.8 is an exceptional lens and can be found for cheap on used market. I personally use that lens a ton because I predominantly shoot dance performances which require standing further away.
Super helpful. 35 & 50, great shout, I was beginning to forget about the all important 50 until now! always thought these would be too close. Thank you
Thanks for the video. I started shooting weddings back in the late 1960s. At that time, I shot complete weddings with only a normal lens (50mm equivalent) on a medium format film camera. Later, I shot weddings with a normal lens (50mm equivalent), a wide-angle lens (28mm equivalent), and a telephoto lens (135mm equivalent) on a medium format film camera. Today, I shoot weddings with a slightly wide lens (35mm equivalent), a wide-angle lens (21 or 24mm equivalent), a slight telephoto lens (85 or 90mm equivalent), and a telephoto lens (150mm equivalent) on a digital camera. I also have two or three zooms in my wedding backup kit.
I'm a commercial photographer and I have to say I love your YT channel! Great tips on the Sony platform and, yes, I even learned a few things. Well done and Thank You. Dave
interesting video. i have my first civil weeding shoot on friday. in my Back 2 aps-c cameras and 3 lenses: 24mm, 75mm, and 112,5mm (already calculated 1.5 crop).
With the amazing 24 1.4 out, and the newly launched 35 1.4 and 50 1.2, this is exactly the kind of video I’ve been searching RUclips for. You just gain a new subscriber! Keep up the great content!! Cheers!
Thanks for sharing. I would love to see a comparison, showing or documenting the distance differences needed between photographer and subject for some typical shots. ie. full length body, close-up head and shoulders at 35, 50, 80, 135.
For fuji, they have 16mm (24 mm FF), 23mm (35m FF), 35mm (53 mm FF), 56mm (85 mm FF) and 90mm (135 mm FF). So yeah, principles you've mentioned in this video are applicable for Fuji, or sony and canon aspc system for that matter. Just saying...
Great work as always, Magic Man!! My 35 GM arrived today. Just an awesome lens. And I think it may replace my 24 GM and I’ll go 35/85GM as you suggest! Keep up the great work
@@MagicWeddingPhotographer it’s amazing! I sometimes found the 24 too wide, but 55 too tight. 35 seems just perfect to me. Just wish I had your mad photography skills! Are you going to be offering presets? Really love the tones in this shoot
Yup, sounds like you’re 35 and 85 guy haha! I’ve been planning to make my presets forever and have been working on it for a while already - hopefully they’ll be available soon 🙌🏻
beautiful photos man!, you make every lens look amazing here, I feel like 24mm and 50mm is a perfect combo for a wedding day, if it's candid photos, but i would swap the 24 for 35mm, and 50 for 85mm if it's posed, 24mm allows you to get so much in the frame wich can be nice in a lot of situations
new to sony so looking at YT vids for lens options and you popped up. thank you for the effort and the sharing. wonderful demo of the power of different focal lengths. impressive. BIG thumbs up.
Great input and in depth analysis, much appreciated my dear. Amazing portraits, i really liked them and i can easily feel the vibe. All your edits are unified in terms of contrast and color pallet. Perfect
This is such a fantastic video, thank you.. I've been using an 85 on one camera and a zoom 35 - 70 on the other.. I've wanted to upgrade the zoom and think I'll either go for a 35 or nifty 50.. thanks again
Really nice comparison Magic! As I shot Sigmas, I usually pair 20&85 or 35&105. I think one day (I hope) I will switch to GM's so I think I would go for 35&85. Again, thanks for the great guide and keep posting!
the 135 is more of a specialty use portrait/headshot lens, so make sure that's exactly what you're buying it for. because that's basically all you can do with it (beautiful outdoor portraits).
Haha I kinda knew you guys gonna love those 50mm shots! Make sure you check my 50GM review to see full set shot with 50mm focal length: ruclips.net/video/oCjL_yRlggM/видео.html
You make the 35 and 50mm combo super nice. While I think it's entirely possible to have the 35mm on a high res camera (A1/A7R12345) and use crop mode to get the 50mm look. For large prints it shouldn't matter and the 35mm is sharp enough to still be sharp while using crop mode. Then you can either leave your other lenses at home or bring the 85/135mm and get 127.5/202.5mm in crop. Amazing photos 👍
Great catch! So all the portraits I showed when talking about the 50mm were shot with Zeiss 50/1.4, but the one photo used for the same scene with all lenses were shot with 50GM :) Glad you enjoyed this video!
Hello Maciej, Thank you for this video! I am new to photography and videography. As a social dancer myself I am interested in event photography. I already have a full frame 35mm f/1.8 After watching a few of your videos my next lenses will probably be a 24mm f/1.8 and later the 50mm f/1.8 With a combo of 24-35-50 you can cover 95% of your needs.
Hey Dude! Thanks so much! I do use Lightroom only and I use very simple editing with one preset. I do have a masterclass video on how I edit in my preset store if you want to check this out: store.magicweddingphotographer.com
Super helpful. I currently have the 24 and 35 1.4 GMs because they're just my favorites. Debating between 50 and 85 for the next lens. 85 would probably make the most sense but I do find its uses kinda limited, and it also feels way less intimate than the others. Almost an outsider's perspective. Leaning toward the 50 for this reason for the times when I want to take full body portraits. I also feel like full frame 1.4 lenses are way more versatile than the same focal length at f2, 2.8, etc, so the rules of thumb don't always apply.
Absolutely phenomenal video… I’m still learning and lord this has helped so much compared to the usual. Not only does it go over the focal lengths and their characteristics, but it’s used in a practical setting… just wow 🎉
I carry two cameras, started out with 24-70 and 70-200. Then I got to hating the weight of the 70-200 and went with an 85. I’m pretty happy with the 24-70 and 85 combo, but I have tried the 35 and 85 combo and I love the lightness of these two primes. I think it’s a good mix for me although I’ll keep a 50, 24-70 and 70-200 in my bag just in case I feel the need.
I also do this one. I always carry 2 camera. 1 crop and 1 fullframe mode with 24mm and 85mm. I usually use the 24mm on the crop which provides a FOV similar to 35mm and 85mm on the fullframe. Then if I need to shoot wider, I'll just transfer the 24mm on the fullframe and if I need longer, I'll just use the 85mm on the crop. I haven't tried using crop mode coz afaik, they suck out pixels. I don't have a7riv so I'm using crop since it has a native of 24mp.
Hi Magic, I like the look of the 35mm and 50mm. Would the Sony 24-70 2.8 GMII achieve the same result as both of those lenses or would they look different at those focal lengths. Thanks
WoW happy to discover this Chanel. Really enjoy your videos. To start as photographer, do you advice me 35-50 or 35-85. At the moment I can’t afford three lenses. And why prices of lenses is too much in Europe 😭 in USA is cheaper (B&H).
Here a friend from Spain learning English just by following you. You are the RUclipsr that I need in my life!! Do you think I will be able to understand your preset without knowing English? At the moment with 35 GM and 85 with the Sony A7 IV, for the third lens in wedding reporting, 24 or 50? thanks a lot!!
Nice video and great shots as well! Thanks for your hard work! Just a question : can you use the s35/aps-c mode on your A1 to change your field of view? You could use your 24mm as a 35mm or your 50mm as a 75mm for example. It's like 4 primes with 2 lenses ;). Does it work?
You would also multiply the focal length by 1.5 crop to get true idea of DOF. So the 24mm 1.4 on crop becomes a 36mm f2.1 (1.4) as far as light gathering ,2.1 as far as bokeh.
Great video ... your work is awesome ... congrats! Just a quick question ... when shooting 24 or 35 ... do you correct ´distortion control´ in LR? Greetings from Brazil - Thanks :)
Great information. I use my 135mm a ton. More than all my others. I tried the 50 but wasn’t too happy with it. I will definitely try the 35mm and now I want the 85. I tend to use my tamron 17-28 f2.8 more than the 50. I’m getting rid of the 50! Nice running caps by the way, what brand??
Love the video! Have been working on switching from the zooms to just primes. Since I carry 2 x R4s, I try the crop mode to have 2 focal lengths per prime. Thanks for your insights! More power to you!
Your a legend! Listening to every word your say. YES this video was VERY helpful, I feel I can look at the 35mm as my general wide lens, but now I see the use of the 50mm over the 85mm, but I think I would like to have both in my bag, because you know you dont want to be close in some cases maybe the bridge is not as approachable or something, so that 85mm will have it's use, also in bigger spaces. But I could see in a tight space going between the 35 and 50mm because I would natrally have to be closer.. Very interesting, great comparisons. What amazing oranges you get from those flowers, I assume they are all "fake flowers" lol as I have never seen anything like that, but damn they look so awesome, that is my new favourite colour!
I have 35 and 24 gm i am sorry but the 24 1.4 gm is the best lens i have ever used in Sony full frame camera before i love 85 my best portrait lens i like 55mm as well for the money and the sharpness but 35 is something that i don't use a lot i like 24 focal length specially videos
What about your thoughts on 28mm. More and more photographers now use these 28mm for weddings i think because of the recent leica q2 release. Im really planning to get 28mm rather than the common 35mm.
I went from a 50mm to 85mm but now find I'm not a fan of the 85mm working distance. Like you I like to be closer, so I'm looking to come back to 50mm. Any thoughts on the 50mm 1.4 zeiss vs the new GM 1.2?
you can watch my 50GM review: ruclips.net/video/oCjL_yRlggM/видео.html as I talk about it a little bit. In general: - 50GM is way faster in Af speed; - in the same size you get 1.2; - 50GM is little bit sharper and bokeh is more smooth, plus you get less aberration - both have very nice image 50GM it’s a better lens, but if you can get 50 Zeiss even used, (but make sure you test out the IQ, as they seemed to vary from piece to piece), you can have really great lens at really great price.
Hey! It’s completely up to you - both are gonna be awesome for this. I personally don’t use any of these too, as they’re too big. If I need reach I use 85mm in APS-C mode and that gives me around 130mm
Nice content mate. Subscribed. One question 85mm 1.4 and 135mm 1.8 for someone who owns a macro lens and dabbles between street weddings and product. What would you suggest is the better buy

It works! You just sacrifice some resolution. Gigapixel AI can solve that :)
You would also multiply the focal length by 1.5 crop to get true idea of DOF. So the 24mm 1.4 on crop becomes a 36mm f2.1 (1.4) as far as light gathering ,2.1 as far as bokeh.
Very good and infomative video. However background music during intro kinda loud and distracting.
Noted! Thanks
This is a very good video - thanks for posting. Just subscribed.
Thanks for the sub! Glad you liked it!
The best video on the topic I have seen so far! Thank you :)
Wow, thank you!
I think 50mm is the only lens we would need to be attached in our Camera. Can do everything. Thanks.
Thanks very informative. The colors of photos 🔥🔥🔥
My pleasure!
Great video, really helpful that you provided a set of images from each focal length, thank you!
Great video ... your work is awesome ... congrats! Just a quick question ... when shooting 24 or 35 ... do you correct ´distortion control´ in LR? Greetings from Brazil - Thanks :)
Thanks so much dude! I keep it off in LR! :)
thank for knowing about of different of lens Can sony 14mm f1.8 use in prewedding?
Great photo examples.. thank you
Great information.
Wonderful content. Love these focal length comparison
Thanks dude! And thanks for comment on my IG profile!
Love the video! Have been working on switching from the zooms to just primes. Since I carry 2 x R4s, I try the crop mode to have 2 focal lengths per prime. Thanks for your insights! More power to you!
Thank you my friend!
Woa, the music is VERY distracting in the beginning.
Excellent representation of the amazing different sony lenses.. keep it up embassodor 👍
Thanks, will do!
Super helpful comparisons! Thank you.!
This was SUCH a helpful video … thank you so much ❤
Awesome! Much needed with all the GMs out there and very nice photos
glad you liked it!!
I have 35 and 24 gm i am sorry but the 24 1.4 gm is the best lens i have ever used in Sony full frame camera before i love 85 my best portrait lens i like 55mm as well for the money and the sharpness but 35 is something that i don't use a lot i like 24 focal length specially videos
perfect and beautiful content/photos. instant subbed
Thank you so much!
Oooohhhh great job! I like your style.
AH! thank you!!
Thanks for the sharing! very insightful!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
This picture set is crazy good! Did you use flash on any of these or all natural light? Is this a real couple or models for a shoot?
In general:
- 50GM is way faster in Af speed;
- in the same size you get 1.2;
- 50GM is little bit sharper and bokeh is more smooth, plus you get less aberration
- both have very nice image
50GM it’s a better lens, but if you can get 50 Zeiss even used, (but make sure you test out the IQ, as they seemed to vary from piece to piece), you can have really great lens at really great price.
Great advice. Great video!
Wonderful information! Thanks You.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching :)
Thank you dude! Super helpful, and your images are really really nice!
Hi Magic. Do you recoomend 135mm or 70-200 for ceremony & during speeches?
Hey Dude! Thanks so much! Between 85 and 135 I’d say 85 is more versatile.
Really cool video! Enjoyed it a lot. What's the sharpest lens in this video? In your opinion?
Looking forward to the next video.
135 gm
Fantastic demo!
i have a 35 and 85, but now you made me to get the 50gm1.2.. xD
Hi magic,, I see all these photos are natural light do you ever use flash or studio lights?
Hey! I use flash only for dance floor stuff and reception when it gets dark.
I love n using 105 1.4 and 35 1.4 ... in wedding ..
How much of a difference does the Sony 24-70 G master look versus the equivalent prime lenses?
