    Sadly, many companies feel that the faster the plant dies, the faster you will buy another.... orchids are considered by many to be a "throw away" plant.... keep it while it is in bloom and then when it finishes, throw it way and get a new one. Why take the time to continue to keep a bloomless plant...... My son works in a large office building and you would be amazed at the beautiful orchids that are thrown out all the time just because the bloom has faded ... luckily, he brings the ones he can home to me!!

    I absolutely understand your rant. I only have 8 orchids but I call them my rehab section: all of them have been rescued from grocery stores and garden center clearances to give them a chance. Great video, as usual, I learn a lot from them!

    I got a Miltoniopsis in an even worse state from the store a few months ago. The roots were so damaged, the flowers wouldn't even open. So i had to remove it all. Luckily the bulb made it through summer (including a heat wave) and now it produced a tiny little flower spike. I would have preferred a new growth but hey - can't have everything!

    Thank you for this video! I just bought 3 Miltoniopsis orchids recently. And they are sitting in that media that you talking about. I think I m going to repot my Orchids in Sphagnum Moss too.. And Good Luck with your plants!!! ;)

    Wishing the best for you and your orchids.

    Hoooooray for posting this video!!! I am sorry for your experience with the gift but knowing you, as an “expert,” had this issue has given - a very new beginner - some confidence. I too was furious when I got into the pot/s after buying literally dozens of Miltoniopsis that were discounted because the blooms were wilted but I wanted to TRY to see if I could save at LEAST one. Getting marked down Miltoniopsis has risks unto themselves but should NOT be a certain death to every one I purchased when repotted immediately.
    I suspect the nursery yours came from was the same one from which mine came. I wish I had the courage to just slam them online and write to the corporate headquarters of the store that was selling them like a pot of pansies. It just isn’t fair. The nursery is setting people up to fail - beginners and experts.
    I hope you will do an update on this effort. I don’t hold out much hope for your sad beauties but .....
    I found your channel when I first started with my “tonis” and jumped right in repotting immediately using your wrapping routine. Then as I moved along and began aggressively fighting ‘orange rot’ with Physan 20 and even going so far as doing a bleach dip and still pitching one right after another.
    I still have a number that have at least two pseudobulbs per plant, no orange rot (yet) and what appears to be new growth. Can’t see any new roots, to be honest, but keeping them a tiny bit on the dryer side of moist seems to have kept the rot at bay. I spritz the base of the pseudobulbs about every other day and give one decent flush about every 10 days. I have fans on them 24/7, moderate to low light and keep them in my ac but the humidity is not ever less than 65%.
    Well, sorry for my rant too. Looking forward to hearing mire about your feelings and experience with “the gift.”

    Brad, thank you for sharing your incredible experience with your Miltoniopsis. I ordered three baby Miltoniopsis (Breathless 'Florence') and one baby showed sad signs of decline almost immediately. Your insight and step-by-dtep tutorial is graciously welcome. Thank you! This variety of orchid is very hard to keep going so I cleaned sprayed with peroxide and trimmed everything and the top was dying so I put clean sphagnum moss lightly dampen it and put lecca around it then I started watching it in my southern kitchen window I got out my spray bottle an it’s loving a temperature inside of 72/75 degrees. It’s doing very well I feel of moss and spray pseudo bulbs when dry twice daily and I spray the leaves I have to say this plant likes cooler lighter everything no direct sun just kitchen windows on south side try it my friend I had moved it and I should have did what my head said the minute I noticed the shrunk bulbs but by spraying it eventually that bulb starts grabbing the water. Good luck . Hey mine was exactly the same thing they want to sell u more!

    I got a few Milts from Trader Joes here in So Cal with the same medium, and I kind of liked it. It was easy to remove from the roots, and (surprisingly) the roots were amazing. I kept one of my Milts in the medium for about a month before repotting with no harm, maybe you got a sick orchid. But I do agree that the medium is not ideal.

    Hi Brad, Did your rescues make it? I love miltoniopsis but the ones I get from the grocery store usually get orange rot and die. Do you know of a good online source for the miltoniopsis types? Since your older video of the gorgeous rebloomed Miltoniopsis shows you know what you are doing, it was refreshing to hear from another grower the exact complaints my family has been listening to around here for the past few months. Rant on, I wholeheartedly agree!!

    Hello Brad interesting but a bit sad, but appreciate your efforts in trying to revive them. So what happened? Did tbey make it?
    I see you love moss, so did I at the beginning but had quite a few orchids in good moss which later started to smell because of mould. So now I don’t do the total moss filling just a few strands to keep on the safe side.. I haven’t got a green house, lights, big fans etc just a plain flat with 2 SW facing windows and 1 NE window as a cooling system. Please let us know about your Milts’ fate, hope they’re 👌

    Great video. Question on the addition of Lime and shell mix (on which I have found little info so far)
    I'm also adding crushed shells to my Paphiopedilums.
    -Does any substance containing Ca Co3 suffice?
    -What's the right frequency of doing so?
    Thanks.

    Paula from Mexico. I have the altitude. I have cooler temps., humidity not high. I have been afraid to try and repot. I have two plants like this. When I got them. They had spikes, but they never bloomed. Question how is these plants you just potted doing now? Did they survive. If so I would love to see what they look like now!!!!!!

  • @carolesykes7955

    The orchids appear to have grown quite well to start with as there were quite a few roots which had grown in that media before something caused them to die. Apparently orange rot is a bacterial disease which kills very quickly so perhaps they became infected after those roots had started to grow?

    Hi Brad, nicely repotted. Hope they recover well under your care. How often will be watering them now? Was the moss moist in the beginning and you’ll wait until is dry crisp and then water again?

    • @rustyrefill6449
      @rustyrefill6449 4 года назад

      In my experience, they benefit from humid, circulating air and some light misting. I wouldn't water them at all until there is at least a few new roots visible that have grown long enough to dig into the media. If the moss becomes crisp, then the air might be too dry

I would have thought you would have removed all the yellow/orange leaves. I am going to look for an update on this video to see how they came out! I miss your orchid videos now that you have moved to Vancouver Island and are doing mostly carnivorous plants.

    Miltoniopsis are notoriously difficult, so don’t beat yourself up. They are either doing well, or they’re dead 😂

    I am so tired of this! I came here because what you are showing is exactly what happened to my miltonia! I think we should sue them . And to my other orchid. They clearly do this on purpose because I found a piece of weird synthetic sponge-like medium right in the heart of the roots . I am also pissed off because it was such a beautiful orchid but they clearly set it to fail from the start.

    The odds were that both of those were in Desperate shape before you even got them and you may not have been able to save them even if you repotted at that time. So you go ahead and you rant because what they're doing is wrong for anybody who loves plants must less orchids.

  • @checkplease7735
    @checkplease7735 4 года назад

    Why are you so upset if that's what the nurseries have to plant them into to keep the price down and affordable and easy to find and all the people I know who have had orchids that have died never buy new ones so your idiology is incorrect and the companies don't sell them in those displays the place that bought them from the nursery does that .
