  • Whether it’s the shape of the glass, type of spirit used or mixer in a cocktail, some drinks are deemed manly and others are considered girly. We gathered America’s best bartenders to find out it customers still applied gender to drinks. Despite the cocktail boom, it’s still happening every night at bars across America, but things are starting to change. And these bartenders argue that the shape, color or ingredients of a drink don’t really matter-what matters is the drink tasting great. So stop worrying about whether a drink is manly or girly. If you like it, drink it.

    I'm originally from New Orleans. A woman I went to college with was originally from Sweden, and was big into some kind of outdoor sports (this is literally the only thing I remember about her is this story) but she was talking about how she had these guys visit from Sweden who were all like macho outdoor sports types, and they wanted a real New Orleans drink, so she got them Hurricanes which are basically a bunch of rum in passionfruit syrup and lemon, and depending on where you get them somewhere between blood red and hot pink. So they see these bright pink drinks and . . . severely underestimate them them as "girly drinks." Suffice to say, one passed out before the cab got there, and another literally tried to make a pass an a mannequin.
    Personally, I used to tend bar myself, and if you gave me my gin gimlet in a rocks glass, I'd be as confused as if you gave me my SoCo and Coke in a cocktail glass.

    I never got the whole girly/manly drink stuff. There's a cocktail bar near me that i absolutely love (so much choice, really good cocktails, and i've got a discount card due to uni societies!), so I'm usually the one later in the night in my friend group who's pestering to go there for at least one drink, yet I'm also the one who's 6'1, broad shouldered with long hair and a scraggly beard, who also loves a good pint or 6. Drink whatever the fuck you want, a manly/girly drink is whatever you're drinking at that moment.

    I do feel a little self conscious about my alcoholic drink preferences, any time I order a cocktail I feel a little bad like it was wrong for me to order that. I don't even know where I get it from, no man has ever chastised me for drinking one, no woman has ever sneered at me as I drank it. It's strange really, the source of the anxiety is probably rooted somewhere deep the fuck down.

    I agree a martini is best enjoyed in its respective glass, but quite often I'll order a bottled beer in a bar over a draft beer that I actually want to drink more cause I don't feel like walking through crowds of people with a big sloppy 16oz pint glass. And the effect of the stemmed glass with wide top would just make it even worse.

    I like a pretty standard gin martini. I also like it in a rocks/tumbler. It's not really an aesthetic thing. I just think martini glasses are awkward to on the table and to drink out of. Easy to spill, too. Does glassware really change the taste/enjoyment of a martini? Interested to hear a compelling argument of why it might be disrespectful to a bartender's talents to order in a tumbler.

    • @pw2110
      @pw2110 7 лет назад +6

      When I opened my bar, I chose to not carry any stemmed glassware (except whine glasses) because if I find them difficult to carry on a tray, I cannot expect my staff or my guests to have the same anxiety. We do not have stemmed coupes. We do have stemless martini glasses and I've never had any issues at my bar. I don't think it's disrespectful to ask for different glassware, but there are people who are served a martini in a coupe and ask for the glassware to be changes because of aesthetics.
      I think it also depends on the venue. If you are enjoying a cocktail in a bar that has table side service, or is seated only, then it's easier to drink the martini in a stemmed glass because you don't have the fear of being knocked into or bumped. Standing in a bar with a drink is a real issue sometimes.
      But as this video says, I have had a good amount of guests ask me for different glassware because they don't want their drink to seem "girly" or "manly" which is an insane notion to me. A badass martini glass makes me think of Mad Men and I think it's sexy as hell. To each their own.

    • @TheElaborinth8993
      @TheElaborinth8993 2 года назад +1

      The reason specific glassware exists is because the drink will perform better in those specific glasses.
      Take a Martini, it’s served in a Martini glass for 2 main reasons.
      1.) A martini, (depending on how you order it) will most likely be all booze. No sugar, no juices, no water, all booze. So putting it in a Martini glass forces you to move slowly and sip on it because you don’t want to spill it, but that act also prevents you from slamming it down like a shot
      2.) A martini should be served extremely cold. And taste better extremely cold. If you ask for it in a rocks glass, all your going to do is heat that cocktail up super fast from the heat of your hand. Making it taste bad because it’s warm. The Martini Glass, when held correctly, keeps your hand away from the drink, keeping it cold for longer.

    I am the woman who's whisky is almost always given to my husband.
    I'm Scottish and came to cocktails from neat single malts, he's English and came to cocktails from alcoholic cider. What we like in cocktails reflects those backgrounds - I like strong spirits, he likes sweeter, fruitier drinks. Neither of us care about the stereotypes of the drinks so please try and remember who ordered what. Some people get it right but you can usually see the concentration, and I really appreciate it when there's no hesitation.
    Also stop trying to put water and ice in my single malt! If I ordered a dram I want it neat, water on the side if you must, (so I can control the change of flavour adding water brings). If I wanted ice I would have ordered it on the rocks.

    I learned more about drinks from the video and comments section 😂 Funny how this is a thing. So what I learned and got to understand. It's more of what's in the drink than the look. Example: Cosmo big no no has lots of alcohol. Looks pretty with the color. I think Gin and Tonic is strong or not strong in alcohol. I might be wrong so I put both😅

    Any bartenders or regulars here? A few months passed 21 and going to the bar, first time, this weekend. Are bartenders cool with, "surprise me?" Rum and coke is as far as my knowledge goes but i want to try some real cocktails. To me they make money, and enjoy, making a good drink. I just dont wanna come off as some douche at the counter.

    A man who walks into a cocktail lounge on a late-July evening at 8pm with a girl in a short skirt, who looks way out of his league, and he orders a French 75, a Martinez, and a Corpse Reviver #2 w/ an extra maraschino cherry for *their* girlfriend who is on her way, plus 3 large ice-waters... that's the type of man you may want to look into becoming.

In england, most cocktail bars I go to I really don't see people giving a shit about the glass, and being a guy, I don't give a shit either, Fave drink is an aviation which should be served in a coupe, don't see anyone complaining about the coupe.

    heh, idgaf, seriously, I will sit in a restaurant or a bar, doesnt matter, and order a tall, multi colored, donned with fruit and umbrellas drink any day of the week. Ill also glady order an old scotch, neat, in a tumbler. fuck it. Drinks are drinks. And honestly.. "girly" drinks.. if you must call it that, taste fucking amazing.
    the best is always someone making fun of a guy drinking something a martini, or something in a martini glass. Like, excuse me, douche.. James Bond drinks martinis, is he man enough for you?

    A dude was harassing the bar back (she was visibly grimacing and shying away) and when I asked him what's up, he got pissed and tried to pick a fight with me by pointing out my pink cocktail.
    I owned it and said, "hm? but it's a nice drink. why not?"
    There was a terse pause and he awkwardly tried to high-five me on it.

    If my mate orders a sex on the beach i will bully that poor soul. It doesn’t bother me it’s all just banter but I think a lot of guys are more insecure than they should be, but at the same time, I think it’s a good thing because masculinity is very important to a man, but it shouldn’t be false masculinity, like if someone who hates whiskey orders a whiskey just to look manly.
    Also, Campari isn’t pink what is she talking about

    If glassware shouldn't be gender specific then why not serve 95% of drinks in a Collins glass? Not in the context of "don't worry about what glass it's in". The "wouldn't make it easier on the barkeep?" context.

    I'm totally behind the message of this video, but it also seems to me that this prejudice is pretty much restricted to us White folk. One of my former locals - a fantastic den of iniquity that, sadly, no longer exists - had a three-hundred-pound Yardie for a bouncer. He routinely ordered drinks that were basically a splash of rum with a whole bunch of fruit juices, and nobody ever dared to question the gender of the liquid or the man.
