Less than 15 seconds in and you lost all credibility when you mentioned "bartending class". Being a bartender is, "Sometime being the D.J. by pressing play and letting Spotify do its thing". That's not being a D.J. At 4:00 tips for bartending is significant in every city. There is nothing special about being a bartender in New York.
I’ve started my career with a bartending class, it gives you so much more confidence and teaches you to work in all kinds of settings that on the job training couldn’t do
Wrong. Some of the biggest bars in the world started from people working in NYC. over 2,000 restaurants and bars in NYC and billions of dollars come in from NYC. I break almost six figures and the market I live in is nothing compared to the other cities like Los Angeles, Austin, Washington D.C or in New York. I know many bartenders in NYC and I go about 4 times a year just to go for the food and cocktail scene and there is nothing like working there.
@@JasperShoes I have never worked with a bartender that learned his skill from bartending school. Not one. Also, being a bartender you know many bartenders from other restaurants/bars. I've never even met a bartender who learned his skill at bartending school.
Im a new bartender, and I suck at talking to people, so hearing u say even if ur not a social butterfly, bartending can be that way, and now im just super excited to get into the world of bartending!!
Lol I began as a very shy foodrunner that was super introverted. Once I worked up to bartender, I broke out my shell and became semi extroverted. I can still be shy at times
Bruuh. I bartended in Japan for a year and those short years I got job offers from Australia, New York, Another posh bar in Japan, Germany. All I did was smile, now I'm overwhelmed with choices. Bartending really is an experience bro
I'm a retired IT guy and just started bartending occasional events for mostly social reasons. Even in the Midwest, I'm pleasantly surprised by how generous customers are when you really dial into their experience. I intend to pick up shifts whenever I can and I'm motivated to improve my skills and craft and show up with a customer-first mindset. I'm going to borrow your "alcohol therapist" title once in awhile. ;) Thanks!
This helped me a lot. I've been making my home bar and making cocktails for friends and family. Everybody (even my therapist) asked why I do not take a bartending job instead of my IT-ish desk job, because they see that I have the love for it. My only excuse was that then I have do deal with the tempo and customers. Your video helped me quite a lot and I might just take a bar tending gig because of it :)
I started as a barback in a tourist heavy bar this past summer. It’s that time of year where tourism slows down where I live and we are no where near as busy as in the summer. I finally got a shot at becoming a bartender and here we are. Few shifts in and I’m starting to feel more and more confident. Only 22 years old and I admit I really got to do my homework on booze. It’s nerve wracking to get orders of drinks you’ve never heard of and even not knowing every basic drink. Just hoping with time, I can become the most confident I can be in this position!
@@nelsonlam96 well when it was time for the tourist season to start, I was asked to be an official bartender during the summer! Got about one more month left of the season. It’s been real fun and im super excited to continue bartending
@@TR-yy1ub yes! It’s like riding a bike at this point! Working at a super busy bar definitely helped with that but sometimes you will need a little reminder. Also, its good to know the kind of clientele you’re working with. I have mainly people above the age of 40 that come to the bar I work at so you can imagine I’m not getting too many green tea shot orders 🤣
Career bartender here, 13 years of days, nights, weekends, and weekdays and i thought your video covered the basics pretty well. Im very happy to see a video that covered the service industry circle of tips they give to you and you give back to them. As a long time bartender people always ask "whats bartending like? I always thought bartending would be such a fun job"...ect ect. I think the one thing that was missing from this video was the huge amount of legal liability and responsibility bartending entails. It is different in every state yes but i feel that is one thing most people dont think about at all when they think about becoming a bartender. Good video either way :)
So true!!!! I have only work at events so I know is not like this but I love being a bartender. I took a course and I want to.make my own bar. I wouod like to know about the legal liabilities mentioned here. Is different here but I would like to know about it.
Ive been working behind the bar for over 7 years, ive been a barback, bartender, bar head, bar super visor, bar manager.. worked in several bars like a beach bar, clubs, sports bar, casual dining bars. You name it. Bartending is more than a career run, its a passion, the adrenaline rush, working under pressure, tips, alcohol, regular customers. Its a fun long ride and still going
I have a developing interest in bartending and I am so grateful I came across this video. It will help me break out of my shell and also incorporate alcoholmist in my recipes.

I am definitely feeling this. I discovered bartending as an accident and I fell in love with it. I used to work at a wine company. Cooper's Hawk to be exact and I worked behind the wine taste encounter. And I would have customers regularly meet with me. Because I knew how to mixed wine, which is not something that a lot of people do, but it made me realize that I wanted to do bartending. And I'm at a place right now. In Indiana called Chatham hills Country Club. And I'm definitely learning. It's tips included, but it's a private Country Club. So they start to at 20 an hour, just for that finance. Because people don't really have to tip. However, I'm trying to take everything. I learn from this place because. I want to eventually be in a high-rise hotel. And be a master bartender. It also helps that I've been a therapist for 7 years. And it makes it a lot easier to transition over to the bar. Dealing with people as easy And not easy for others, but I wanna definitely be the best of the best in this field. I love this video. I love that you talk about the people that you meet. Cause you for sure. Meet a lot of people I've met military people, politicians, Engineers, billionaires, the list goes on, CEOs you've been doing this longer than me. So you definitely have more experience, but just the people I've met in a year that have shaken my hand and have given me referrals and their business cards and communications with them. You definitely do get to connect with other people and you feel like your on stage performing, you feel like you're putting on a show. Even though it's backworking at the end of the day you feel like you just left a party in the serotonin is through the roof in your body.
I am a bar back/bartender at a small town bar in East Texas during the weekend. Weekends at this bar are insane. I just got my TABC two weeks ago and I’m pretty new to making drinks, but they get easier to make the more I make them. I feel like I mix well with the patrons but it is common to not get tipped at this bar, so we don’t split tips. If they did, they would only get about $150 for each night. The most I’ve got in one weekend was $160 because I do not get to serve as many people since my main job is being the bar back. It’s a tough crowd to serve but I absolutely love it.
More bartending videos, please. It's super interesting and enjoyable to listen to you and video quality is amazing. I really didnt expect you to only have a 100 subs when i was watching the video.
Landed this job 4 months ago in one of the top hotels of the country where i live. Had about a week experience in the bar but thanks to one of the best bartenders or should i say the best people, i was able to learn it quick enough. Even though their methods differed, i still chose my own style which i still struggle with most of the time. Serving drinks, meeting new people while also making sure i wash my glasswork on time😅. Had to learn the role of cashier last week while doing bar at the same time. I dont know if I'm being childish or lazy but doing those two at the same time while making sure no guest waits too long for their drink and be certain that the bar is always clean, is super stressful. And even if it's a busy night, its standard for only a single bartender. But i'm proud for what ive done in the past few months and im sure that I'll get up to speed in no time. One of the most informative videos I've watched regarding the bar. Much love.

You totally hit the nail on the head whenever you mention just the shoe opportunity of being in a position like that. I was actually supposed to be a barista at a very unique café in Santa Monica California and I still regret it every day because I just feel like a coffee shop is definitely my vibe. I love coffee, but I think you can make pretty good money as well maybe even just as much as a bartenderat least out there you can not. You have so many Instagram influencers are coming through every day or business executives. Everybody loves coffee and I just couldn’t imagine the opportunity that would come being in that position if you were likable. I just got hired on as a bartender at a local Italian restaurant so I don’t think it’s going to be a lot of cocktails, but mostly pouring wine, however, I do want to get my foot in the door as a bartender. Even though I’m not a huge fan of super late nights, I feel like I’m floundering at 35 years old. I have a masters degree but I don’t really like my field of communications and I haven’t made much money. But I know I like people and I like being in sociable environments so I always felt drawn to either being a bartender, or something else that allows me to make decent money, but also provide experience
Hey Dan, thanks for sharing with us. Definitely go where fits your vibe! Whether it be coffee or the bar. I do see a lotta influencers and execs in our bar and it's interesting just people watching.
I know a bartender that works at a casino. I asked him what's the most he's brought in, and he said 3K. He worked a Friday and Saturday, and it was just nonstop. Apparently, this has happened more than once but it's rare.
In senior year still, but i really want to be a bartender! one big problem- I have really bad social anxiety and my memory isn't great. I'm neurodivergent so its hard to work in faster paces or loud inviroments, but I still really want to be one
As a bartender myself, I can confidently say that it usually is beneficial for men to build themselves. But for women, it usually ruins them. It might sounds harsh but that's been my experience.
I've been doing this as a hobby, but trying to be as professional as possible. I'll never quit my healthcare job, but maybe I can do this as a side hustle for fun and make money supporting my hobby. I already work until 6am as it is so I'm good with crazy hours.😂
Hello sir.. I'm from Philippines.. your new subscriber just now... your videos are nice coz you put subtitles and your English is very clear to understand. Thanks for this video sir Nelson. 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
The thing is, for me, I love the idea of bartending, as in making different kinds of drinks and serving them to people, but the way it actually plays out in reality, having a million different people trying to get your attention and order from you at once, having to keep track of another million people's orders at the same time, all while there's tons of noise, loud music, and there being a million things you need to keep on top of sounds like the perfect environment for me to lose my sanity 😂😅
started working at a bar a year ago, never know much about bartering, but everything can be learnt with enough practice and time, now i am full on barman working in a czech bar, working around 30hours a WEEKEND, sure, i dont have much of a time to sleep but, if yall are willing to take the same way, enjoy your time behind the bar guys (btw i am not sure if you should call it a bartending class, would probably call it like bartender practice or sum, cuz drinks are just recepees, but bartender is the one that makes them good, and the bar popular, not sure if its just my view of the thing or not) wish yall a great time
I’ve met multiple bartenders that make amazing mocktails so I really hope that not drinking alcohol doesn’t prevent you from enjoying their craftsmanship.

I'm a bartender from the UK and the difference in tipping culture has always fascinated me. What is the main reason that tipping is so much more important in America than it is in Europe? Is it because of how low minimum wage is?
Just finished my 12 hour bartending shift yesterday. We all went out on the terrace to have an afterwork drink, then we heard some maniacal laughing from the street. This dude was carrying a keg of beer on his bike, he then proceeds to roll the barrel across the road and throws his bike too. Again the laughing continues and it sounds fuckin creepy. Then he just picks up his keg and bike and walks off laughing
Hey glad to found ur video, I badly need it🥺 I'm a freshman and choose a bartender course huhu but they said it had a entrance exam huhu but i was graduated on strand COMPUTER 😭
I’ve been wanting to go to bartending school. But what holds me back is speed and multitasking. I still try. Even if they’re my weakness, can I still do it? People think it’s not respectable schooling to study for, but not for me.
Hi, I'm writing to you from far away and cold Yakutia. I would like to wish you good luck in the bar trade, and in the promotion in RUclips. As strange as it may be, but we have one thing in common - the bar. It is quite interesting to see how other establishments work. We are quite different and at the same time quite similar)))
I work in a touristic frozen schnitzel for 17€ type bar in Strasbourg on the border with France and Germany and yesterday was fête de la musique. @@michaelduong4262 Its not easy but the more youre behind the bar they start to sink in. I made myself a bar bible. Its an index card spiral that i put drink recipes in for quick reference. When you find a good cocktail put in in the bible. Before long youll have a book of good drinks.

I studied international gastronomy and am going to the US with in the next 7 months or so, just need to finish working at this restaurant as a cook so I can get my degree bc I have to have labor hours in the kitchen to be able to graduate, and I honestly hate the kitchen, I had a couple classes of bartending, mostly the basics and the history, and I would like to get a bartender job in the US mainly because of the money and bc of the talking environment, I’m very social and love meeting ppl, but also I love licour and the air conditioning, bc I get really sweaty working in the heat of the kitchen, which I hate, but what worries me is if bartending is the same amount of stress as I am experiencing right now at the kitchen, everything in bartending is a green flag for me but that one thing worries me.

7:26 our go to at our dive bar is to yell at the customers "No karate at the bar!" for that exact reason. Play fighting can become a real fight and we don't need that. Keep the karate at home, where you can break whatever you want and it's not my GD problem.
I've been bartending for almost a year now and I love it too, super tiring but like you mentioned, the pay is great. I would like to know your opinion on something related to socializing: When people offer to buy you a drink (even if it's non-alcoholic) how often do you accept? Drinking while working obviously feels like torture so I try to avoid it. My coworkers don't like it either. But such people, usually young who are alone, just want someone to drink and chat with, and its natural for them to approach the bartenders. I myself used to be a very shy girl so I totally get it. So I feel very rude saying no to them. Often I'll ask them to wait/come back later in the night when my shifts over, or give them my number. This usually ends with hook-ups, fun nights but its not the same as getting to know someone. Do you have any experience with this and how do you handle this? I would love to know your opinion ❤
Bro I just passed a bartender interview due to your videos and will be working as a bartender I don't have and idea as a bartender yet do you have any tips or videos I can watch or recom
Yep. Not a job to just pay the bills. Definatley something that takes time and patience like becoming a pilot, or becoming a tatoo artist. You don't just get right in.
I want to become a bartender but im scare of the social interaction even tho i been doing customer service since i was 17 years old bartending seems more intimidating and i suck at talking to people and english is not my first language Im super awkward and shy 😭😭😭😭
Dunno if this is the right thing for me im taking training but its only 4 days and the drinks we making well...the recipes ain't easy to remember, i got 0 expeirence and when i imagine myself working at a bad im getting cold feet as to the amount of pressure such as remembering recipies and the drinks itself Im kinda doubting myself but maybe if i do gain a bit expeirence then my perspective might change Im only doing bartender since im curious about it and wondering if its something i can like but no matter how much i think about it i prefer computers or video editing
Why not do both? If bartending is your curiosity, you can find a spot that lets you only work a day or two so it's not a big commitment. Plus, if you don't like it after a few weeks, then you can always quit. But I would say, once you get the hang of it, making drinks and talking to your regulars is really fun!

I do see a lotta influencers and execs in our bar and it's interesting just people watching.
bartender from montreal canada, good video spot on!
I wonder if the bar scene is similar in Montreal!
I know a bartender that works at a casino. I asked him what's the most he's brought in, and he said 3K. He worked a Friday and Saturday, and it was just nonstop. Apparently, this has happened more than once but it's rare.
This guy needs more recognition!! This video is amazing
Extremely amazing!
You guys are too kind T.T Thanks
I am commenting, mostly for the algorithm. Great video, and good luck on growing your yt channel
In senior year still, but i really want to be a bartender! one big problem- I have really bad social anxiety and my memory isn't great. I'm neurodivergent so its hard to work in faster paces or loud inviroments, but I still really want to be one
Doesn't sound like you'd thrive in that type of environment.... But best of luck.
this looks soo cool can't wait to start
I start a bartending job Wednesday!! This was incredibly entertaining and fun to watch. Thanks for the insight!
How is it?
How was it for you ?
@@nijahclark1927 it was nice while it lasted. I must’ve not been cut out for it because they ghosted me 😭 after I finished training
@@fmosopeayeni-davies3152 it was fun until I got ghosted, definitely worth trying out and seeing if it’s a good fit
how is it so far if u dont mind sharing?
bartender from maryland, great video 👍 only thing i would add is when youre starting out, ALWAYS CHECK IDS !!!
Oh yep. Definitely! unless they have a full grown beard x)
Now I am 100% sure I am gonna take bartender school during this year. Thanks for this video
As a bartender myself, I can confidently say that it usually is beneficial for men to build themselves. But for women, it usually ruins them. It might sounds harsh but that's been my experience.
I agree. Bartending showers the girls with compliments and attracts a lot of unwanted attention but hey..
Coming from a woman, can you tell me why? 😬
wait wdym build themselves
i work in a hotel which has a bar . i love it and im excited to finally learn how to do some cocktails ! nice video !
thank you so much! You'll get addicted ^^
I imagine you can make a lot of money bartending at the right hotel bar
as a bartender i really enjoy videos from others passionate bartender ! that's dope
Thanks for subscribing Albert! I do my best ^^
You nailed this one! haha
Im trying to become a bartender and this is the best video I seen thx I can’t wait to start my bartending class
started working at a bar a year ago, never know much about bartering, but everything can be learnt with enough practice and time, now i am full on barman working in a czech bar, working around 30hours a WEEKEND, sure, i dont have much of a time to sleep but, if yall are willing to take the same way, enjoy your time behind the bar guys (btw i am not sure if you should call it a bartending class, would probably call it like bartender practice or sum, cuz drinks are just recepees, but bartender is the one that makes them good, and the bar popular, not sure if its just my view of the thing or not) wish yall a great time
Absolutely right! thanks for sharing. Anyone can make drinks, but its the bartenders that make guests enjoy them!
I’m a bartender and thinking about getting back to it!! Been doing it since ‘09 🍸
Súper educativo, this video it’s kind of a heads-up of what to spect being a bartender from Havana moving to NY… Thank u so much!!!
Very inspirational video! Thank you!
Both good info and nice to look at, video wise! :D
I enjoyed the video. In my Islamic religion, alcohol is forbidden, but your work seems difficult. I wish you all the best, success and happiness
Thank you so much!
I’ve met multiple bartenders that make amazing mocktails so I really hope that not drinking alcohol doesn’t prevent you from enjoying their craftsmanship.
@@fr4203 I will go watch as soon as possible. Thank you for your sweet words
Love your content.. Keeping it real
Thank you so much!
Awesome, fun video man! Can’t wait to discover more of your content 😌
Cheers!
Wow thank you so much! I'll do my best!
Well I definitely figured out fast that I can’t do this. Thanks
Thanks for the inspiration man 🫡
As a person in the business for twenty five years, wash your hands, as soon as you walk in. This is imperative.
New but learning fast. Huge help, thanks!
So glad that I came here!❤
Hi I plan on doing bartending as a part time before I go to collage to make some money and this was a really great video and it helped a lot . I would love to hear more it really helped a lot because I been thinking any it for months and I plan on getting my bartending license soon
did u do it or what
Never thought of this until a customer told me its something i should look into, looks very doable and similar to fast food
That’s really helpful & inspiring for me being a beginner on bar tendering journey❤️🙏
Should I go to bartending school before trying to get into bartending, or should I just practice at home?
As an up and coming bartender in NYC i found this video really inspiring...what bar do you work at? Would love to buybsome drinks from you!
Appreciate you. I'm at Anytime Billiards At 30th and 6th. Come check us out!
Well, he got straight to the point! BAM!
Rush hour can be the worst too lol. Especially when the keg empties around that time lol. Love being a barman but I can be an ***hole though lol
Things we see at the bar scene right? I swear we get the best seats in the house
commenting to help with the algorythm. really good and well made video.
Thank you so much! cheers
$300-$400…in NYC? You can expect a lot more if you’re any good.
That is true. But not everyone is good.
I am sure where you work is a huge factor I want to get into bartending but personally I would only want to do it at certain places
Hey glad to found ur video, I badly need it🥺 I'm a freshman and choose a bartender course huhu but they said it had a entrance exam huhu but i was graduated on strand COMPUTER 😭
Hey thanks! You'll love it ^^
I’ve been wanting to go to bartending school. But what holds me back is speed and multitasking. I still try. Even if they’re my weakness, can I still do it? People think it’s not respectable schooling to study for, but not for me.
I'd say try it. Worst thing that can happen is you tried and learned something new
More videos pleaseeee. Thank you
You got it!! :D
Thanks! Hello from NY! We are both alcohol therapists who serve our guests a great time ^^
I work in a touristic frozen schnitzel for 17€ type bar in Strasbourg on the border with France and Germany and yesterday was fête de la musique. My bosses removed our station mid service to put a huge speaker, they were constantly micromanaging while being drunk off their asses... I know what you mean
am from kenya thanks so much av learned alot
So fire!! Ur editing 👌🏼
Thank you so much!
Excellent video. Thanks 🍻
Great inspiring vid man, thought you'd have more subscribers
Keep up the great work man
Thank you so much! I will work hard!
Bartending on the weekends for 2 yrs now. Everything he said is true
IM THINKING ABOUT DOING THE SAME THING. BUILD ON A SKILLSET THAT CAN ALWAYS GET ME PAID. WHATS ITS LIKE REMEMBER ALL THOSE DRINKS??
@@michaelduong4262 Its not easy but the more youre behind the bar they start to sink in. I made myself a bar bible. Its an index card spiral that i put drink recipes in for quick reference. When you find a good cocktail put in in the bible. Before long youll have a book of good drinks.
Hey how do you go about bartending only on the weekends. Is like a part time job contract or your freelancing
@@DayaMcCarthy local club/music venue. I started as a bar back just for side money. The manager noticed my work ethic and that im good with customers. I can talk to anyone. From there they let me work fill in and some concerts. I moved up from there as ppl moved on and now im lead Bartender. The bar is only open Fri/Sat so yes its part time.
Never would've expected him to say play illmatic that's really funny
Illmatic I didn’t see that coming 😂
on repeat!
This video is great🤣🤣 you're awesome! Keep it up
You're awesome! Thanks Colby
@@nelsonlam96 You're awesome!!
This literally helps me a lot,, thanks for this
I studied international gastronomy and am going to the US with in the next 7 months or so, just need to finish working at this restaurant as a cook so I can get my degree bc I have to have labor hours in the kitchen to be able to graduate, and I honestly hate the kitchen, I had a couple classes of bartending, mostly the basics and the history, and I would like to get a bartender job in the US mainly because of the money and bc of the talking environment, I’m very social and love meeting ppl, but also I love licour and the air conditioning, bc I get really sweaty working in the heat of the kitchen, which I hate, but what worries me is if bartending is the same amount of stress as I am experiencing right now at the kitchen, everything in bartending is a green flag for me but that one thing worries me.
I did barista and bartending shift this last sunday
16 hours of hell and still fun
Damn I’m a 1st gen American & as a barback I’m always willing to improve myself for the good. I also work in New York & learning everything from the tools to the bottle labels Like a Sponge so I can keep it memorized
I loved this, thank u
😁thanks!
How realistic or difficult is it for someone under the age of 21 to work as a bartender in the city?
In NYC? Let's say.. I've met many people who worked at bars being under 21
I did want to learn...
I think it’s time
You only work on the holidays if that bar is open on those holidays. Some bars open 12/365, but not all.
Yep! Most bars open everyday! The new guys are definitely working the holidays though.
love the tips!
Thanks Bocchan
Great video :) enjoyed it!
Solid video man
You rock bro keep up the great work 🫡
Thanks man!
do you think bartending course is worth it for someone who has 0 experience?
i think it cost around 250$
For $250, I'll say it is worth. I paid more than that in NYC. Only if you have interest in it!
Oh, I only wanna work two days a week. I know that’s gonna be a lot on my body and I already am going to be working full-time in the morning.
Yep. Not a job to just pay the bills. Definatley something that takes time and patience like becoming a pilot, or becoming a tatoo artist. You don't just get right in.
It's very rewarding when the guest loves your craft as well ^^
Good video. Keep it up
Its make me so excited to work abroad especially in usa, hope this videos give me more positive vibe to get job there🔥🔥
it's a different playing field in the NYC bar scene!
I also have a question how can I get experience as a bartender to get recruited should I try at lower bars then try better ones
I'm not a bartender but I think you should start with a lower bar. Get some experience and climb higher. Good luck!
I want to become a bartender but im scare of the social interaction even tho i been doing customer service since i was 17 years old bartending seems more intimidating and i suck at talking to people and english is not my first language Im super awkward and shy 😭😭😭😭
Only one way to get better ;) You can do it!
Good video man keep going ur great subtitles are fine fuck what anyone thinks and keep doing u man
Dunno if this is the right thing for me im taking training but its only 4 days and the drinks we making well...the recipes ain't easy to remember, i got 0 expeirence and when i imagine myself working at a bad im getting cold feet as to the amount of pressure such as remembering recipies and the drinks itself
Im kinda doubting myself but maybe if i do gain a bit expeirence then my perspective might change
Im only doing bartender since im curious about it and wondering if its something i can like but no matter how much i think about it i prefer computers or video editing
Why not do both? If bartending is your curiosity, you can find a spot that lets you only work a day or two so it's not a big commitment.
Plus, if you don't like it after a few weeks, then you can always quit. But I would say, once you get the hang of it, making drinks and talking to your regulars is really fun!
