- You get drunk at work, right? No, probably not. That’s not always the case with bartenders though. Not only are they serving drinks, sometimes they’re imbibing them as well behind the bar. We chatted with some of America’s best bartenders about their policy on drinking at work, the pitfalls of getting drunk on the clock and how they have deft tricks to avoid getting sloppy.

"I never get drunk enough to where I can't count the money" 😁
I knew a bartender who kept a very watered down bottle of vodka just to drink for himself, when customers bought him a shot.
Why tho
azans number 1 fan so he doesn’t get fucked up and he doesn’t wanna refuse and maybe be a downer or somethin.
Boss move
@@plorin3015 This. As a bar you have a constant game of balancing where you want people who are to drunk out to follow safety but at the same time provide a experience and yes, make people buy (aka drink) as much as possible. He's doing that stuff to not come of as rude by refusing, and at the same time not get drunk so he cannot perform his job.
Smart move actually
When you're slammed 2 deep at the bar and there are 20 open tabs and 10 twenties sitting on the till, and I'm trying to figure totals and got new orders coming in and a fight brewing by the pool table, knocking back shots is last on my list. Sober behind the bar, works for me.
respectable af, i was shocked by how many bartenders in this vid were like "yeah its normal, you gotta party with the guests." its not that I don't think they can do their jobs correctly, its that I think that if you work in a bar and you start using the alcohol you serve to deal with the stress of work, you're never going back. Its going to get worse, because its gonna work, its going to take the edge off and make you happier at first but it surely points you in the direction of alcoholism and makes you a terrible candidate for a bartender.
I agree with this, working in bars you sometimes do need a drink to get you through a busy Friday night. When you’re seven hours in and dealing with a shitty customer, having half a shot really does make a difference and does take the edge off for me.
There's a big difference between being drunk at work, and drinking at work.
That being said, I think the biggest thing is the atmosphere. Drinking on a quiet Monday when you've got three groups that you're chatting with? No. Having a redbull and a shot on a crazy Friday where the customers are sloshed (sorry, almost influenced) and the music's loud?
Yeah, I can't tell you how many kitchens I worked in, where the Chef brought a round of drinks, when we put down a rush. (I had a shot of Ouzo with a maraschino cherry) I can count on half a hand how many times somebody got sloppy, or threw up. A DRINK is drinking at work, Getting sloppy is DRUNK at work, but working on job-sites, with power saws, and literal tons of materials on hoists is a different work environment. In the back of the house, you might cut yourself, burn yourself, or have somebody send their steak back for a refire. On the job site, someone can lose a hand, their life, or you can do thousands of dollars of property damage. Behind the bar, somebody can get behind the wheel of a pickup truck.
As a bartender, you know the equation. You've heard "I can handle it." How much have you eaten over the past hour? How much do I weigh? Okay, how much do I really weigh? You do this every night, all night. You can gauge whether a customer has had one to many, and you cut them off. I'm a little surprised that this channel (A gormand channel) didn't ask about Eating at work, when that's part of the equation for one more. Some places have food, some places allow the workers to eat, or even comp a meal. Others don't.
1:11 Steve's the fucking man
Bringing back the old days where people had a good time and also made a living. America puts way to much emphasis on work we all should be allowed to take the edge off here and there
It's your choice lol... Some people like to work hard.
@@anthonyhutchins2300 The United States definitely has an obsession with controlling the workers. I don't think drug testing should be legal outside of athleticism. If people party too hard, you should be able to observe from conversation and the quality of their work. Nobody said anything is wrong with working hard.
@@jasonbourne6297 If you couldn't drug test then how could you prove the worker wasn't on heroin or something when they crashed the company equipment or fell asleep on the lawn mower, or forgot to do work on the list? No need to test for marijuana, but if you suspect an employee is on hard drugs, then yah you need to test to cover your ass as the employer.
@@landscapepros6755 You know what's a good preventive measure? Employing competent people who don't hire bums. Your argument doesn't make the process any less invasive. That's like saying we should just have a breathalyzer on everyone's steering wheel and then we wouldn't have any drunk drivers. Lets be honest, the whole "drug test" thing ends up harassing poor people. It's obvious when someone is addicted to hard drugs. People are getting fired for smoking weed on their own time and they literally have to analyze your piss to tell. Even if you think addicts are a flight risk, that's a systemic issue that is not solved with drug testing.
@@jasonbourne6297 You clearly have never dealt with hiring laborers. Most of them tend to be on the bottom end of society to begin with. Not hiring bums? At this point a warm breathing willing person, is all that applies for these jobs , even though they pay over $20 per hour. If there is an accident and drug use is suspected, you have to test them for opioids to cover you bases for the impending lawsuits.
Watching this as I get ready half cut just to feel better 😂
I’m so much more sociable drinking at work, like it’s so much easier to engage with customers and honestly idk how but I remember the drinks every time haha. I’ll just wake up at 2 am and freak out thinking I fucked up someone’s 6$ change and gave em 5$ or something 😂😂😂
I would just sip beer no shots
I’m a bartender and one of my bartending mentors put it like this “You’re like a kid in a candy store, it’s easy to go crazy and try everything, but your stomach hurts and you’re a grouch after. Now try to man the register like that.” I make way more tips when I’m completely sober and honestly it’s a HUGE liability if you drink behind the bar.
I used to work in an unnamed pub with an unnamed guy who was constantly slaughtered on the job, he was a really good barman somehow but Jesus Christ he was gone most of the time
Speaking as a customer,I truly pride myself on being the easiest one a bartender has to serve on any given day. Not to mention tipping graciously, and waiting patiently for said bartender to get to me if they're extremely busy. I do so because I know they have to deal with a certain amount of rude customers so by me being pleasant for them,it makes my day and hopefully theirs so much better.
Quality control is key
Oddly enough, anytime I took a percocet before work, I got praise that day and usually got a bonus
Don't get drunk on your own supply.
I am loving the way you think! I stayed drunk every single day this summer, and I had zero dollars to my name. Then again it's easier to get drunk for free when you live in Vegas.
So if I buy alcohol I can't drink it cause it'd my own supply?
Kenny Not if you intend on selling said alcohol
@@lovatojonasfan1 yea granted if you get drunk on your own is just sad

That one guy who can work while drunk as a bartender .... thats me 😳😳😳

That's us, sucka!
The laws must be looser in NY and LA we cant drink at all in Washington state liquor control board is like the dea here.
Jillian has a very practical approach
my ex was the best drunk while working i have ever seen.she would bounce off walls and overpour everone. all the patrons loved her.i new how bad she got by the amount of tips that given nite.
Gotta get the fuel.
I just take one of our sample glass and pour a splash of beer in it. Specifically an IPA
I used to hang out at a pub where the bartender/owner was drunk all the time. Sometimes he just poured alcohol out to people indiscriminately. "Dude, you want me to cover for you, I think you need to sit down for a bit" I said. "Eeeh... Ok do that!" So I did. Even if I wasn't really allowed to serve people alcohol. It was just to help out. Otherwise the whole place would have gone to hell. lol.
Jackson Cannon gives off a Dr. Drew vibe.
I'm a lucky one I can bartend drunk as hell it helps me focus but no too drunk you just gotta know your limit I have lots of customers that buy me shots instead of tipping me it's awesome especially being a mechanic as well you only get cash tips as a mechanic sadly lol
I used to drink at work (2-4 shots) to deal with tourists because it would make me NOT nervous while interacting...
What is he drinking at 2:28?
Virgil Kaine Ginger Bourbon
apple juice ;)
Almost all the servers drink. One said she can serve great when drinking, but not when high on pot. The women invited me into the women’s employee restroom one night. Bottles of spirits like it was an altar! Luckily, we have only one female manager and she doesn’t give a shit as long as you’re doing your job. Now there’s one condescending one that seems to just like giving orders and in a condescending way. He’d be the one to write you up. The others, even the general manager would likely just say you can’t drink in the clock. Only reason they’d write you up is if they had to. Doing their job vs Being a dick. The female even got a glass of wine one night for a waitress that was crying because some customer called her a bitch. You see the wine sitting right out and know they are drinking. As long as the prick manager doesn’t come along with his eyes that seem to be watching every little thing, they’re fine. I do it. I drink heavily watered down whiskey like Churchill did through the day when working. So I just get comfortable…work better like it made him do…
I drink shots of campari and sniff coke, and get paid for it,life is good
Goace Florin where
Karen Grill is an all natural sassy kinda stunning
Ok guys this doesn’t happen at small town restaurants and bars and if it does it’s the dive bars
Well I live in a small town(s) and the only bars where I have ever in 31 years of drinking legally seen a drunk bartender is the bars that are going out of business. What's with the whole "Dive Bar" thing. It's a BAR, period.
I see bartenders having a shot or two and as long as they do not affect their job and it’s spaced out then I have no issues with it.
1:18 he should become a professional Norman Reedus impersonator
NomMyMuffin I
so when you buy them a shot of whisky they will pour themselves sherry and charge you for whisky?
Julian Mächler not condoning it. But yes, I had a friend that worked at a strip club serving drinks. Whenever customers would buy her a drink, the bartender would make a virgin of whatever it was and she would drink that instead and keep the difference as a tip.
A normal barman will refuse to take it
Every place I've worked, the staff's shots just go on a tab that we comp at the end of the night
Obviously in America it's not only illegal to be drunk and working in a bar but it's also accepted? And I work in Ireland
It’s not that deep
I'm not a professional bartender by any means, but I have bartended at many different bars over the years here and there, most recently a few weeks ago and my No.1 rule is no drinking at work until after Midnight if its slow and NONE if its busy and I'm kicking em' out at closing.
Adderall.
Fuck. RUclips is slowly phasing out the "Ad will end in 5 seconds" thing, and making us watch 15 second long shitty ads. I'm boycotting these companies, and we need an alternative to youtube. Thumb down every ad, don't do surveys, avoid companies who interrupt your fucking videos as much as possible.
I got fired frm two places..for being a lil bit drunk on duty.. Being down a shot or two makes me loosen up ..
ahhh drunk at work
Here's the thing. While drinking on the job may not be illegal and some bartenders may be either able to handle their liquor or control themselves enough not go past the breaking point. But as a general rule for most, it's just not a smart thing to do. Maybe having one shot with ur manager's approval is ok (worked at places where everyone drinks - including the manager) but anything past that will affect ur inhibitions and the sharpness of ur mind to stay in control of what u r doing and the things happening around u; especially if u r in a high volume venue. Just not a smart idea. Best not to do it at all.
regulars dont realize the higher tolerance most of us have to booze and other party favors.
this is crazy! drinking at work is straight up illegal in the UK!
It's the same in Norway aswell,
you'll be fired on the spot if they see you drink alcohol at work.
It is here in Canada too. Doesn't stop you from doing it. As long as you don't get plowed, it's not a big deal. People used to drink all day in the 60s.
WRONG. It's not illegal in the UK for bartenders to drink. There are actually some bars (particularly in London) where the bartenders actively get drunk with their guests. For example the many "Be At One" bars in various cities throughout the UK. Most bars have a no-drink policy for their employees. But it's not "straight up illegal" like you said.
here in Finland it is :P i'ts illegal to get drunk (or high) while on the job because of security and insurance reasons... might be more reasons, but it's 2:30 am, and i'm half a bottle of whiskey down :)... so i forget XD
It's illegal in parts of the U.S. as well. I live in North Carolina, and it is definitely illegal here.
Ever heard of don't get high on your own supply?
Sorry, if I ran a bar, restaurant, anywhere with alcohol, staff wouldn't be able to drink on shift or come to work drunk
Booorriing

Fastest and best bartender I ever saw didn't drink at all.
Lmao I would never.
These Bartenders seem to be unaware that drinking behind the Bar is Illegal in most country's you can face up to some big fines.
It's really weird I'd want to try and be a bartender, but I don't like drinking.
Gotta be the only profession where drinking on the job seems to be acceptable.
I'm now nine years sober and in order to help some yong punks who think they have all the answers can you confirm with me that alcool in excess is the siamese sister of the #metoo movement?
Amateurs.
You're in charge of the party, not part of it. Don't shit where you eat
Yeah. Don't drink while at work. Jail sucks. Then blood can flow if stupid.
Also you are everyone's Dad when serving.
I’m pretty shocked this many drink at work. Wouldn’t fly at any other job! I think it’s kinda bullshit that they can legally do it
Its part of the job.
watch City Space Bar videos, they ALWAYS test cocktail before serving it
This Comment is WTF.
Yes, at any other job Not dealing with Alcohol consumption
it would be shocking if they were Drinking.
Remember everyone. Their bosses allow this. Who are you to judge what the business owner allows of their employees. If I were a business owner, I would ask them how many shots they feel comfortable with taking and continue to work effectively. Listen then observe.
As a bartender, I don't agree with drinking WHILE working. After work? Sure, a small drink to make moping the floor after you clock out less tedious. But while you work? No.
What? you mop the floor after clocking out, not before?
If I ever Even took a sip of alcohol while behind the bar I would be fired on the spot
bartenders make me sick
Can't stand drunk bartenders. Its like having a designated driver that's more wasted than their passengers.
Good bartender knows their limit. I don't mind If they have a shot or two at work If it helps them to put up with drunk customers. But if they are fucking wasted it's clear sign to find another bar.
Galatians 5:16-26
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh, and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another."
No any bartender drinking while on the job is not professional you want to drink do it in your day off or go somewhere else
