I find whiskeys are like bands… no matter what others say, your brain eventually figures out what’s right for you. It’s great to watch whiskey reviews, I take something away from them.
The video that started my whiskey journey....over a 150 bottles later and I couldn't be happier. Red Breast 12 and OF 1910 got my wife into it too. Thank you.
@@Valefolken I do. I've had a couple bottles that that just didn't do it for me. Both 10 and 20. It's been hit or miss, and that's sad because I really really loved the original flavors.
The first time I tried Redbreast 12 was at my brother's wedding and I absolutely loved it , one of my favourites. My ultimate favourite is Lagavulin 16
Woodford Reserve Double Oaked has been my favorite whiskey for the last couple of years. Such an easy sipper and so well balanced. Very glad to see that on the list.
My wife got me into whiskey. Brought home a bottle of Compass Box Spice Tree after she did a blending class with John Glaser. Now we are both SMWS members and enjoy whiskey on the regular!
Back when I was in 3rd grade... when I was a novice whiskey boy I started with crown n coke or jack n coke. Now it's whiskey rocks for me(Turkey101) or Laguvillan 16 neat .
Drinking Woodford Double Okaed for the first time as I type this. I get the vanilla and caramel notes but goodness does it taste like a stack of buttery maple syrup covered pancakes. Don’t even get any oak on this time around.
19:00 At first I wasn’t into peated whisky at all, but now it’s an absolute favorite. I always want something very peaty in my cabinet. The great thing about a whisk(e)y journey is how your tastes change over time. Give me a Laphroaig 10 yr cask strength and I’m one HAPPY camper!!
You can't go wrong if you buy the 6 classic malts. Dalwhinnie, Talisker, Cragganmore, Oban, Lagavulin and Glenkinchie. Often available in a pack with small bottles of them to get an idea.
Mine has been The Balvenie for the past 28 years. Ive tried lots, but thats the one I settled on. I only drink maybe a bottle a year these days, but still enjoy it when I do.
My first taste of Whisky was Black Jack D. The first vottle i ever bought was Wild Turkey 84 proof. The first bottle I sipped and enjoyed (and thus began my hobby with Whisky) was Woodford Double Oak.
Woodford. Solid choice for anyone. So good. I have had that Redbreast, also great. A nice alternative to the Balvenie 14 Caribbean is the Glenlivet Caribbean cask.
For me i start with fruity stuffs, like perhaps Irish like teeling or bushmills, then proceed with sherries, peateds, and then finish off with one expensive vintage whisky (from a whisky bar) like Springbanks or Bowmores, it changes my whisky palate journey once you hit those stuffs.
Dude, the two of you together just takes it to another level! Great back and forth and real-ness between you two that made this so awesome! Great job. Also, this will help with getting my wife into drinking whiskies with me. Thanks.
Scotland:s single malt comes from so many regions and have so many different tastes so what not to like? They're sooooo good! My favorites comes from Islay!
My strategy to acclimate to the proof is to (gun reference as well) take a proof shot. I get the highest proof I have and start with a have shot and treat it like mouthwash. Except i dont waste it after swishing. After my “proof shot”, everything is way smoother and i can taste the flavors much more.
Finally a Jeremy Siers video! However having Allison on this one makes it great!! The chemistry between y’all is great, and makes the video so relatable to how my wife does when she sips whiskey
I always find that Woodford Double Oaked tastes like those Riesen candies while 1910 tastes like sipping barrel-aged Cherry Coke through Twizzlers. Redbreast I find to be the perfect test in whether someone likes whiskey; if someone says they don't like Redbreast then I don't think I can trust them lol
I don't know if you know, or have seen them, but on eBay, you can buy a whiskey glass with a moulded in 'lip' to hold a cigar! There are several available, and they are even available in the US. I might even get one myself?
With alcohol I want to know I'm drinking liquor so I choose the rye bourbon cuz I tell it's spicy with a hint of Carmel and the Smokey flavor is kicked out when it goes down
Hi Jeremy. It’s my birthday weekend, Aug 1 Sunday, 5-0!!! I trust you and and bought 4 of 5 from this video with my birthday money. Love your content, fan for years. I’m in Florida too. Redbreast Irish is my fav even though met my wife (Twenty five years!!!!) Edinburgh Scotland. Love you Sir!
My love of whiskey actually started with Port Charlotte heavily peated scotch. I was pretty "meh" on whiskey as a whole before, but when I tried that it really opened my eyes to just how wide the variety is in whiskey as a category. Now I've developed a much deeper appreciation for all sorts of whiskey.
Do you ever add water to your glass? At the Whisky Museum in Edinburgh, the tasting stewards use a glass dropper to add a few drops to each sample. This opens the flavors by allowing oils to emerge. They don't do it any other way.
I decided to buy a bottle of bourbon a few nights ago (JB Black Extra-Aged). Hadn't drank spirits in over ten years but I think I'm gonna stick with it. It doesn't bloat and stretch my stomach out like beer does. 4-5 shots over the course of an evening is a perfect way to wind down before bed.
I know some whiskey heads don't like it but I got a couple beginner friends into whiskey with Wild Turkey Longbranch. It's sweet but very approachable, easy sipping
@@baaa4698 I love rare breed! Great value whiskey. Not sure if a barrel proof is ideal for beginners in general, but it might be a good entry to barrel proof bourbons since it isn't that high and doesn't drink that hot relatively speaking
Jeremy, love your channel. I just found you as I was researching how to smoke cigars. Your wife is awesome. It's amazing that she is willing to try this out with you. She is a keeper!
For the Scotch entry you should've gone for Glenmorangie 10. It's a soft, flavorful and slightly sweet Single malt that I've never found ANYONE saying that it's 'too rough'.
Hey Jeremy, I got into Whiskey and cigars a little over a year ago. I have enjoyed the walk. I have kept around the 20s price range just in case I don’t like something. I have been ready to move up around the 50 prices. So thank you for the list of suggestions. See you on the next round
I'm a beginner whiskey drinker and i immediately subscribed to your channel as soon as i saw this video. I love how Jeremy explains everything, interact with his wife and how the video was edited. It's funny and easy to watch. Now as for the whiskeys: i only tried the Redbreast (i love breasts too ;)) and the Balvenie Carribean Cask. They are indeed very good beginner whiskeys but the best beginner whiskey i tasted so far is the Mitchell & Son Green Spot Pot Still Whiskey. Very similar to the Redbreast (i bought both at the same time to compare) but for my taste the Green Spot is my favorite. Greetings from Belgium.
JS, I love Double Oak but in a virgin video I would have put Angel's Envy in its place. The rye is a great introduction to rye or the bourbon in place of the Double Oak. I agree with all of your other choices. I am an occasional peat head but that is definitely an acquired or rare flavor palate.
Woodford double oak is GOAT, lol, whiskey is the way! Breckinridge Rum cask would be an easy rec for beginners too! My fav ol’forester is 1920! And the single barrel!
The Redbreast 12 is good, but the 21 is much better. I would also recommend Midleton Very Rare 2017 or 2019. The 2019 is excellent. Another solid much less pricey Irish whiskey is Three Swallows from Powers. Switching things up a bit. I was in the hunt for a sipping rum and was fortunate finding a really nice offering from Mount Gay. It is the 1703 Master Select. Fun video as always!
I agree, I love Redbreast 12 and the cask strength. I did get a chuckle when you said you don't like Jameson, but only because they come from the same distillery. Haha
Just picked up Woodford reserve double Oaked today and OMG. That's a good step from "kick'n chick'n " which has been #1 for a sipper and mixer. New to whiskey so this is my first mid priced, very good burbon. Next is OF 1920. I like the 86 proof so I'm excited to try it next.
New to the channel. I have enjoyed the couple of videos that I've watched so far. I introduce the old forester 1870 before the 1910. I prefer the 1910, but I think the 1870 is more approachable for the beginner... I also love the Woodford double oaked, but I find it doesn't always go over with a new whiskey drinker... The mellower options seem to go over better in my experience... Buffalo Trace, Four Roses small batch, makers 46, Basil Hayden... The 80-95 proof sweetspot...
really good picks, definately start with lighter, less agressive tasting ones, and you two are really fun together. Whisky is definitely an acquired taste, never was able to drink anything straight until I tasted Suntory Toki and Hakushu, then I was able to move onto pretty much most Whiskys save the few REALLY aggressively peaty or woody ones.
Coconut oil is used for "Oil Pulling". It is a process that is alleged to reverse cavities and gum disease. Many people say it works. I have used it too. Im 64, it seems to dramatically improve my oral environment. IDK. I'm a doof.
3:47 don't get me wrong, but in my country, we long extra virgin greek olive oil, and we have to taste it on a warmly just baked piece of bread. And seriously the portion of olive oil is extreme for a small piece of bread, but of course not swishing it all over the mouth.
I'm also new at drinking whiskey I'm still training my pallet as i do tast some flavours but I do get a strong alcohol flavour on the fourfront, I've noticed so far I love scotch but I'm working threw tasting different types so could change
Wonderful video again. SMWS is simply the best. Visited the tasting rooms in Glasgow yesterday and picked up a couple of bottles. I've been a member for a number of years and would recommend it to anyone.
Yeah Jeremy, you need to do more content with your wife. She brings something really awesome out of you. She’s also a lot of fun to watch as well.
I message on another video the same thing. That ''Ive never tasted wood'' segment was hilarious
Yes. This! ⬆️
She looks like a hostage in this video. Like she’s afraid to do something wrong. I hope it’s just nerves. If not, something else is going on there.
I find whiskeys are like bands… no matter what others say, your brain eventually figures out what’s right for you.

The video that started my whiskey journey....over a 150 bottles later and I couldn't be happier. Red Breast 12 and OF 1910 got my wife into it too. Thank you.
I've heard some folks say OF changed recently too and lost its flavour. Do you think that's true?

One of the the RUclipsrs of all time, hands down
My favorites for inexpensive and accessible: Woodford Reserve, Maker’s Mark, Buffalo Trace and Old Forester
my suggestion to new comers of whiskey, is Michters American. Supper easy and to me tastes like cream soda. Great video.
My favorite whisky(s) is Teeling Small Batch and after that Jameson Small Batch....
I keep my Redbreast chilled, really like it that way!
I get strong maple from Double Oaked Woodford. Another great beginner bourbon is Wild Turkey Longbranch.

The tropical vibe I get from rum finished whiskeys is usually coconut 🥥. Maybe that's what you were getting. 🤷🏼♂️
