Turn On & Off Your PC With Your Voice Using Alexa Skills

  • I'm really lazy and I like being able to automate everything. Using a simple skill called WOL skill, I can use the built in 'wake on lan' function on my PC to let Alexa control turing on and off. This also works with routines.
    * Go to the My Computer Icon, right click and go to properties.
    * On the left click on Device Manager
    * Find your physical network card under 'Network Interfaces'
    * Right click and get the properties
    * Under power management make sure all the options are ticked
    * Under advanced, make sure wake on lan and magic packet are enabled.
    * Next go to your network and internet settings and look for the 16 digit MAC address, this is the physical address of the card.
    * Sign into www.wolskill.com with your Amazon details and add this MAC address giving the computer a name.
    * Now you can add the WOL skill on the Alexa app, sign in with the same details and it will detect this PC as a smart device that Alexa can now control.
    * Note: you may have to change BIOS settings on your PC to allow the network card to control powering on, if you're not sure about BIOS check with a PC expert.
    ** Use these instructions carefully as I accept no responsibility for changes or damages to your devices - Thanks **

    Hi guys, for those who have troubles turning on the pc while completely shut off, make sure you have tried the following steps:
    1) enabled WOL from the control panel
    2) enabled WOL from BIOS (you can find tutorials easily for your motherboard)
    3) disabled the Fast Startup option
    For the last step go to control panel > power options > choose what the power buttons do (from the left menu) > change settings that are currently unavailable and finally uncheck the "Turn on fast startup" option.
    Hope it helps and btw great video Andy :)

      Best thing is to use a free wake on lan app from your phone to check its setup correctly. Each PC has slightly different BIOS and lan card settings so best to Google your own setup as there's no way to troubleshoot each specific configuration.
      Remember this doesn't work with WiFi cards, only wired lan, and not all motherboards will support so best to Google your card and board to see if there's specific settings for your hardware.

    This skill was working perfectly for me for months. Then, a couple of weeks ago, it just stopped. I did all the usual steps; went back to the beginning and made sure everything was enabled correctly. Checked the mac address, removed the skill and added it again. But the app just can't find my PC anymore. However, I can wake my PC with other wake on lan apps; it's just this skill that's stopped working.

      Thats a weird one. It did happen to me once, and it turned out the skill had disconnected from the Alexa app, but it sounds like you may be having a different issue. My only thought is that something is blocking on the network, maybe a port on the router but its a long shot. Worth reaching out to the skills creator, his details are on the bottom of the wolskill.com website.

      It doesn't matter if you logout from the website when you're done adding PCs, however if you watch fully, you need to sign up for a licence and WOLskill ID to use the windows app. Wake on lan you can do without a licence, but to use the PC app which performs the shutdown you need a licence. It's once off and unlimited.

    So I wanna put this here for anyone in need of a bit of help getting this all set up, I was almost ready to join the handful of the comment section asking for help because it just wasn't working no matter what I did. Until I noticed something odd about my ethernet driver itself, it was last updated in 2015 and was all up to date which led me to realize it's nothing to do with my hardware and all to do with my software. I spent probably an hr and a half trying to trouble shoot and ended up fixing it by doing these 2 simple steps, starting with going into your bios clicking advanced and making sure you actually have WOL enabled. Many people still complain after this that they still don't see it which was my personal experience until I installed a recent version + update of my driver, now I can see the power management tab and all the stuff under devices that wasn't there prior to the reinstallation. (Note that you wanna make sure you uninstall the outdated driver before the reinstallation just make sure you download the correct version first or you won't have any internet.) Could be a few things to be honest. You could try the following, but each machine is slightly different so it's really trial and error. Best bet is to Google search wake on lan for your specific PC and see if theres any particular settings you need.
      * update the driver for the network card
      * check that WOL is enabled in the bios
      * disable any firewalls temporarily

      For turning off you need to install the windows app and setup a licence etc.
      If your PC is not coming back on after a manual shutdown you'll need to check that your bios is still waiting for a wake on lan request if shut down and not just if it goes to sleep.
      The exact setup varies from PC to PC so best to google your own machine/ bios, but a good way to test is with a free wake on lan app on your phone.

      So first and foremost, you need to ensure that the WOLskill website has the correct MAC address for your PC before anything will be detected in the Alexa app. Try a free WOL app on your phone to see if WOL is working on your PC, this will also give you the correct MAC address.
      Once you've confirmed this try reinstalling the WOLSkill skill in the Alexa app, making sure you login with the same details on both the skill and the WOLskill website, so the order should be:
      Website->skill->Alexa App
      Hope this helps.

Your Network card could be called something else depending on the hardware and boards in the device. Bare in mind, this will only work for wired LAN cards, not Wifi, so you have to find your own particular network card and follow the rest of the steps. Not really familiar with the Ubiquiti Unify network setup tbh, but there should still be only 1 mac address for the lan card on you PC. The mac address is the hardware address so you need to find the one for your wired network card on the pc itself as this doesn't work via WiFi. • @AndysTechLife

      You shouldn't need any of those tbh. The wake on lan command will go straight to the mac address of the PC. • @AndysTechLife
      @AndysTechLife  3 года назад

      If its Windows 10 you might be able to restart into recovery mode which will let you get into the bios if the PC has a UEFI bios. Instructions below. If not you'll have to google how to get into the bios for your specific laptop.
      2 notes:
      This may not work on all laptops and be careful changing settings in there as you can do harm to the laptop. So do this at your own risk.
      This wake on lan probably won't work with a laptop as it only works with Lan cards and not WiFi carfs and you'd need to have power coming into the laptop and a network cable connected all the time.
      Restarting into bios from Windows 10:
      Navigate to settings. You can get there by clicking the gear icon on the Start menu.
      Select Update & security.
      Select Recovery from the left menu.
      Click Restart Now under Advanced startup.
      Click Troubleshoot.
      Click Advanced options.
      Select UEFI Firmware Settings.

      Had the same issue myself first time around and only seemed to let me after 2 updates of the driver for my network card. Try and see if there's any windows updates first then try updating the network card driver in the properties. Hope this helps

    Thanks! It works when i turn it on but when I say turn off it wouldn't. Any fix?

      Generally either the windows app installed on your PC needs firewall access to listen for the turn off command, or the license and key from the Wolskill website are incorrect. these are the most common causes of the 'off' command not working.

      @@AndysTechLife what would be the name in the firewall to be enabled?

      Funnily enough I couldn't find it in the allowed list on my 'allow through firewall option' in windows, so this may not be an issue. I've added it manually by adding a new app through the firewall and adding wolskill.exe from the folder its sitting in. I'd suggest try reinstalling the windows app and ensuring that it says that your license key and ID are correct and it shows up as connected. If this is all correct you should be good to go.

    hey, great tutorial by the way, one quick question, i have this setup for my windows 10 pc with a realtek pci lan card, but it will only work if the pc is in standby ? doesn't work from full shutdown .. any suggestions ? thanks in advance

      Seem like other people are having the same issue. I'd try updating the driver and seeing if you can get it to work with a free wake on lan app from the phone, but I have seen people say some cards just won't work. Check out some of the other comments as I think this is bring discussed I them.

      So this will only work with wired Lan cards so if you can figure out the lan adaptor you have the setup should be very similar. Best to Google your own PC as you might find what to look for.
