  • Today we get into Pantera, quite possibly my favorite band from my high school years! She really didn't get into this one, guys, but we have a serious discussion after the video concludes, so please, stick around and listen to that before you down vote the video and before you comment for my daughter's revocation from the human race. We all have our thing, and we can agree to disagree, so please, watch the discussion before and reserve judgement for after you've heard it!
Be sure to click the link below and give Pantera all the love for this awesome song, as they're the ones who created it, and we're just humble listeners.

EDIT: So far, the response to this has been amazing! To the few of you that have reacted favorably to this and dropped supportive comments, just to let you know, you made her day. She was so nervous about me posting this, and to be honest, so was I. I really do appreciate each and every one of you guys!

Sorry I missed this. I'm doing my best to expose her to real musicians. But, she is a 13 year old girl, after all. There's only so much I can do! LOL!
At least she can get into the music I'm exposing her to as well as the other, I guess you can call it "music"? Technically? Maybe?

Appreciate the honest reaction from Lexi, I love Pantera but fully appreciate they don’t appeal to everyone. Looking forward to the next part of your journey

That means a lot. I totally appreciate the open mind. As I said in our talk afterwards, I feel it was a fail on my part thinking she was ready for this, but she clearly isn't yet. I'm going to have to take the L on this one. But the discussion after the video was constructive and shed a lot of light on her feelings, and when we revisit Pantera, I'll probably choose something like Cemetery Gates or The Sleep.

Your daughter is so well mannered. As a father & grandfather, that makes me smile. Pantera is truly one of my top favorite bands. Dimebag was definitely a groundbreaking guitarist. I was so shocked at how he was killed. I've noticed that most people, who are not really into Metal, enjoy Pantera's music... but the vocals are hard for them to get into.🤘

Thank you forbthe kind words! She's an amazing soul, that's for sure. What happened to Dime was an utter shock, I still have a hard time believing it happened. I'm slowly trying to get he over the harsh vocals. It's going to take time, but we'll get there! :)

No band out there heavier than Pantera. And I’m a metal head thru and thru. Death, Grind, Black, Doom, Sludge, Thrash…. Pantera are the Kings!

Yes sir! I've been a Pantera fan since high school. They've been my go to band for so many years. They've great when you need to get your aggression out, that's for sure! :)

@@mattlexireactions4313 Right on!! I still remember the first Pantera song I heard, back in 1990. Shortly after Cowboys was released. I was listening to the old radio show, “Metal Shop” at a neighbors house. An interview segment with Phil Anselmo aired, and then afterwards they played “Primal Concrete Sledge” from Cowboys. I was instantly hooked. Next day I hit the street, rode my bike to a record shop and purchased a cassette of Cowboys From Hell! Couldn’t wait to bring it to school to show all my friends.

Nope, and I think I jumped a little too soon on this one. I'll have to slowly work my way up for her.

Something that really helped me branch out into metal is Guitar Hero and Rock band. It got me to focus more on the musicianship. The vocals of metal are what initially kept me from diving into the genere but my appreciation for metal vocals eventually came a little bit later.

Yeah, her and I played Rock Band a lot when my XBox 360 still worked. I had hundreds of songs downloaded but haven't had the disposable income to get another one to get back up and running again. There have been a few songs she's heard that had the more harsh vocals. She just never responded to it. I'm more inclined to blame myself for moving too fast into it. It was only our 7th video, but when we did Slipknot, she seemed to deal well with it and wanted me to "pull the Band-Aid off" so I obliged. Lesson learned! :)

Pantera is one of my all time favorite metal bands. Her reaction is great because it was honest to her. I can respect anyone's opinion if they give something an honest try. Who knows, it might be one of her favorite bands down the road, after she gets exposed more to the genre, and realizes the time tables of all the bands. Good reaction.

Maybe try Hollow. She will be able to understand all the words, and he actually sings.

I really appreciate the patience and understanding. It means the world to me. Believe me when I say we're not done with Pantera. But your suggestion is something I know she'll sink her teeth into and rock. She just isn't 100% with the growls/screams yet, but will rock it if there's portions she can sing to, so Hollow, Cemetery Gates, or The Sleep will probably be right up her alley!

Should have her listen to cemetary gates to hear Phil's vocal range.

Oh, most definitely. I was blinded by her being very receptive to Slipknot. I thought, "she can handle this, she should be able to handle Pantera". Nope! Trying to slowly work her way into those more aggressive songs. Cemetery Gates, Hollow, Floods, or The Sleep would be a good way to get her slowly into them to explore more of their catalog, I think.

What's the purpose of the video? Try to convince her get into it in any way? (serious, didn't get the point)
I think that you should try to explain her what are the lyrics about. I remember in 92 I was 11 years old and I had a chance to get the translated lyrics through MTV and the song meanings got me!

    • @williambejar5874

My point is: if she could understand the words, she could have a better ideia of the song's message, and associate it to the visual of the video. As I said, when I was a kid, I listened to it (a girl next door lend me the LP) and when I got the message it went straight to my heart!
      Greetings from Brazil!!! #peace

Thank you for the constructive criticism. I do appreciate it. This was when we were still very new, and when we do eventually start back up, I want to try and get deeper into things.
I also honestly think it was my fault for throwing her into the deep end too quick. I peeled the bandaid off and I should have started in some of their more mellow songs. I intend on getting back to them and try something like Cemetery Gates, Hollow, or The Sleep. Something with clean vocals mixed in.
Again love the honest, constructive criticism!:)

I can see where she's coming from. Metal is an acquired taste, at least it was for me. When I was her age, I was listening to Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Poison, stuff like that. I think at that time Motley Crue and Skid Row was as heavy as I got. It wasn't until later on that I started appreciating heavier music. The thing with Pantera though is they progressed with each album. She might, possibly like something off Cowboys From Hell a little better. Maybe Cemetery Gates...? Just a suggestion. =)

Thank you for the open mind! :) It's always great when people don't think we're attacking their favorite songs. Pantera was the be all/end all for me in high school, so I felt a small sting from it. But, it was definitely a fail on my part, as I thought since she listened to the Slipknot song and liked it, she would have been ready for this. I'm scaling it back just a bit and will regroup to come back to them to do Cemetery Gates, The Sleep, Hollow, or Floods. Something a little less screaming so she can understand what's going on. Thanks for the view! :)
