I went thru several changers....my parents weren't allowing consoles on the tv but were fine with a hand held I could playvon my own. I logged a lot of hours on my grey brick and kinked the hell out of at least two cords.
@I say Hevi Kabisa every first and popular comment I seriously don't understand your phrase but seeing your profile picture I see clearly you're a fan of the lion guard
I'm pretty sure the lack of a light was because the light they had was basically Timex Indiglo and was very, very blue, meaning that a significant amount of the color information would be lost when playing at night. Which is unfortunate as the GBC is basically unusable without an external light in many cases where the GB didn't have issues. I also think that the contrast dial was more about being able to turn it up to get the most out of the batteries so that you could suck them absolutely dry if you wanted to.
And the thing about cartridges was, when you played Game Boy games from the mid-'90s vs. Game Boy games from 1989, you *_weren't_* playing on the same hardware, even if you used the *_same_* Game Boy. As with the Super Famicom/SNES, cartridges, plus advances in chip technology, meant that hardware updates were instead included _in individual games._
Same here man, Probably spent 3x more time on my GBC than any other console i've owned. The damn thing never left my side for many years. Still have it, still works!
Metal Gear on the GBC is an astonishing technical triumph. Seriously, you guys, if you haven't heard of or played it before go check it out. It holds up.
Metal Gear Ghost Babel is by far the best 2D Metal Gear game. it's VASTLY better than the original 2 games... and we better not even talk about Snake's Revenge
@@kevboard We don’t talk about the NES games. Or Survive. Or the mobile spinoffs. However, the MSX games are really good, especially Metal Gear 2. I like Ghost Babel more than Metal Gear 1 on the MSX but Metal Gear 2 is much better. Snake’s Revenge is actually a surprisingly improved sequel over the NES version of Metal Gear 1, but it’s still worse than the original MSX version of MG1.
Born in 85 here. For my money the GBA is the best console ever released. It had a great original library but all the remakes ports and remasters plus thr ability to play gb and gbc games put it way ahead. FINAL FANTASY 6 ADAVANCE IS THE DEFINITIVE EDITION
It was a pretty logical model upgrade in that they took the issues most people had with the original Game Boy (being a little too bulky and not having a color screen) and addressed them since technology had advanced to the point where this could be done in a cost-effective and battery-efficient manner. The original model already had such an extensive library at that point that its owners really couldn't complain even if every game from there on out had been Game Boy Color exclusive.
Maybe that’s what Nintendo is doing with the switch, waiting until technology becomes cheap enough that they can make a Super Nintendo switch that can almost Handel ps5 and xsx type of games

Yeah. When he said that, I was like, “That’s oddly specific…” and then forgot about it until he was listing the weird licensed GBC games Nintendo published!
As a kid born in 1990, GB Color was a great system. My first GB was the Pocket and upgrading to the color basically felt like getting a supercharged version of the same system, but in a good way.
“I don’t know how they did it, but they made the Game Boy Color have its own unique look. You can immediately look at this and tell its a Game Boy Color, and not an original Game Boy.” Well... yea.. it says Game Boy Color right below the screen.
I'm surprised Pokémon Gold and Silver were playable on the original Gameboy since one of the new features was Shiny Pokémon, whose entire deal is that they have a different color palette than their non-Shiny counterparts.
You talk about the weirdest topics that I never thought I'd like listening to or be interested in, but you somehow make them all super interesting and stupidly funny I absolutely love your videos, been watching for years
5:57 I feel called out here. My parents got fed up of buying me batteries all the time, so they bought me a rechargeable pair for the Gameboy and the DC adapter. I spent an embarrassingly long time playing next to a wall socket out of sight from my parents. Probably why they never bought me a handheld ever again.

11:20 "Why not remake Zelda 1 or 2 for the handheld?" Fun fact: Oracle of Seasons was originally supposed to be a remake of Zelda 1, but became its own thing at some point. It's also why dungeons 1-7 in that game all had bosses from Zelda 1.

Hey Scott, in a few days I'm going to be releasing a game room tour. You've really inspired me as a collector. It wasn't until I discovered you that I started to take it super seriously. I notice how you say you love watching small game room tours and that got me thinking about making my own. I'm not asking you to watch, just thought I'd let you know how much you inspire me as a virgin and game collector.
Fun fact: The Game Boy Color has twice the CPU clockspeed (could be underclocked to the original GB speed for backwards compatibility), four times the Work RAM and twice the Video RAM, aside from the obviously extended color palette. This allowed for a lot more code to be run within the same time frame and a lot more data to remain loaded at any time. Even if it may not have been that obvious on the outside, developers did have the ability to make significantly more complex software on the GBC platform than the GB platform. This makes me wonder if there are any games that run on both that run worse on the GB version, not just graphically but in terms of lag, additional loading seems, etc. Did intercompatible games have to underclock the CPU and limit memory usage on the GBC in order to maintain backwards compatibility with the GB or could developers choose to utilize this extra power if the game happens to be inserted into a GBC? If yes, did any games ever do this? If anybody with more knowledge about the GB and GBC platforms have any idea about this, I'd love to know!
The extra VRAM is especially notable in my opinion, because it allowed the screen to be completely filled up with unique tiles. The original gameboy only allowed for *at most* 255 unique background tiles. That's all that could fit in the system's VRAM. The entire screen was made up of 360 tiles, so you could only fill about 70% of it without repeating anything. On the other hand, the game boy color's extra VRAM allowed for the game Cannon Fodder to have an entire FMV intro filling the entire screen (along with liberal use of bank switching).

13:00 My "favorite" example of this is Mario 64 DS, which includes an absurd number of new features, three extra playable characters with unique abilities, tweaked levels that support those abilities, another twenty-odd stars to collect, and more... but it's borderline unplayable because the D-pad only supports 8-way directional inputs rather than the 360-degree inputs Mario 64 was designed for. (And don't even say "but you could use the touchscreen" because only a Sith likes touchscreen platforming controls.)

I have a lot of second hand nostalgia for Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games. I grew up at a time when both the DS and GBA were kinda relevant, and though I only ever owned a DS I still sort of want a GBA. There’s something about the look of the graphics, the simple yet often deep gameplay, the pure childhood feel and charm of it all. It makes me feel like a kid again whenever I look at some of the gameplay and box art, even though I’ve never played most of these games. I’d love to maybe collect for it one day.

It hurt to see him brush aside that title and move on. Don't get me wrong, Oracle of Ages was my first Zelda game and blew my mind, and began an unforgettable foray into that series.

Ah I see
Fun fact: The Game Boy Color has twice the CPU clockspeed (could be underclocked to the original GB speed for backwards compatibility), four times the Work RAM and twice the Video RAM, aside from the obviously extended color palette.
Only Pokemon Gold and Silver had downscaled graphics and worlds on Game Boy as far as I'm aware!
The new 3ds, ps4 pro, and xbox one x (not series x) also had hardware improvements
