I’m old enough to remember when the Game Boy was still a relatively new system. The blurry green screen scared me away, even though I understood it had many good games. The introduction of the Super Game Boy was the opportunity I had been waiting for. I still think it was one of Nintendo’s cleverest moves.

It's hard to be upset, because the pokemon youtube community is so vast there's not much left to be said about how it affected the game boy.

Donkey Kong Land I and II were my first ever video games, on account of my parents allowing handhelds but not consoles when I was younger- I completely understand how they look in retrospect, but I was definitely obsessed as someone who didn't know any better.
I actually played Donkey Kong Land only semi recently via the 3ds eshop, and actually found it really well designed for the most part. Yeah the screen crunch kinda sucks but once you get past it it’s great
The first one was hard as hell because of how zoomed in the game was and how slippery the physic was, but the second and third ones were really great! Granted I never got to play the SNES version.

as someone who has never been able to get into pokemon, it was quite affirming 😂
I love how the whole video comes off as a trip down memory lane from the perspective of an early 90's kid, detailing how charming and engaging the games were in spite of system compromises, only to end by reluctantly conceding that almost all of it was pointless because most of us bought the Game Boy to play Pokemon.
The Game Boy was ancient by the time Pokémon came around, so much so that Nintendo of America advertised it with the Game Boy Color.

Us 80s kids didn't even know what a pokemon was. We bought it for Mario and Tetris.
@@FinalLuigi It was actually a blue Game Boy Pocket, but I understand your confusion. The two systems look quite similar. You can distinguish a Game Boy Pocket from a Color by looking at the system's bottom left corner; the Pocket's is flat & the Color's is rounded.

I didn’t know the reason they packaged in Tetris instead of Mario was to spread the appeal beyond kids, but it makes so much sense to me because when that thing came out, my dad, who was early 30s at the time, became obsessed with Tetris. We had to beg for an NES and, later, SNES. Didn’t have to beg for a GameBoy in between.
I'll never forget the guy working at Cash Converters in Australia who told my parents that Pokemon Red Blue & Yellow needed to be played on the corresponding colour of Game Boy. Good times 😂

My favorite part of every Scott video is that brief moment when, after the video ends, I hold my phone up to look at the comments and Scott's profile picture appears upright before the screen shifts. It's truly magical.
I love the OG pokemon series so much - the simple charm to them always grabbed my attention as a child. When you're young, simple games turn into realistic worlds, and many of these titles came across that way to me as well. I'm so glad you covered the Gameboy, and I cannot wait to see what adventure you bring us on next Scott!

Pokémon really thrives in the imagination, and that’s how it’s designed, imo. For kids who aren’t that experienced with games, getting lost makes the world feel vast. You don’t know just how big secrets work, so you think any secret you find might be the most important one in the game. Every Pokémon is special and potentially powerful. Your imagination fills in all the gaps of the actually small and simple game world. It’s definitely a series best started as a kid.
My immersion is ruined because I know Scott is just filming these on Crash Bandicoot’s pants

In all fairness to Metroid II, a LOT of the most iconic aspects of the series debuted in that game. Shooting downward, kneeling, the Varia suit's shoulder pads, the Spider Ball, Spring ball, Spazer, Plasma beam, Samus' arm cannon opening up to denote that you're in missile mode, the Space Jump, the Metroid larval lifecycle, recharge stations and save points- all these fundamental parts of Metroid were introduced in Metroid II. Sure, it was in black and white, but you can't downplay the importance of the title.

And yet I feel like he isn't quite as biased by nostalgia as a lot of people are. A true fan of something can criticize things they loved as a kid/teen because they can now see the flaws. I always have and always will love the game boy as it was my first true console way back in the day and yet I can clearly see all the various problems with it now all of which Scott mentioned here.

I don’t get why Scott “only” has 1M subscribers and yet consistently gets more than 1M views per video. You would think he would have more subs.
You do know that the same person can rewatch the video and it still counts as an extra view right? XD, it's not like once you view the video you can't contribute to the view count anymore in the future, it's not like that and Scott The Woz is one of the most bingeable channels on RUclips, us people we will all keep rewatching him until the end of the end of time XD
Keep in mind that those screens were a lot better when they were new - even ones that have sat unused for 20+ years have degraded, especially in regards to ghosting. It wasnt great then, but it's even worse now.

In my experience classic Gameboy is best played on a bed or couch with a dimly lit warm colored lamp to the side. It doesn't illuminate the entire screen, there's like a tiiiny fraction that's not in the light, but you can still see it in my experience.
It's actually really good for something to do before bed, since there's no blue light shining into your eyes keeping you up like a phone would. It's incredibly comfy to play Gameboy if you have the right environment for it.

I'm sure this has been said a million times already, but the screen wasn't THAT bad back when the system was actually new, but sadly, the original screens really didn't hold up over time well. The pocket screen seems to have held up somewhat better though, but even those aren't as clean as they originally were.
For 25 minutes I was like "when's he gonna mention Pokemon?" and then...
I'm happy with it.

Monsters university is a Prequel
Finding Dory felt like a direct sequel to me. Monster University is a direct Pre-quel (Though Mike meeting Sully in the 5th grade is retconned now).
Car's 2 did feel like a spin off though, it felt like a Mater's Tall Tales episode.

Growing up in the age of the Internet, watching ScrewAttack/Game Trailers and other web content creators, a lot of people in our early 20s or so learned about retro gaming through that. At least, that's how I got into retro gaming. Born in 1999.

For as much as Scott harps on Castlevania: The Adventure, you have to remember that it was one of Konami's first attempts at developing a handheld game and it turned out to be a bit of a buggy mess. However, if you compare The Adventure to Belmont's Revenge, you can see that they learned from developing the first one to aid in improving the second.
Castkevania The Adventure is better played on Wiiware than on gameboy.

The displays were much much better when they were new. They wear out over time. You used to be able to buy screen replacement kits for them in the mid 90s. This is like saying an ancient castle sucks because it’s all crumbly.
