I never comment on RUclips videos, but I am so happy to see something like this come out of here. I missed this kind of stuff. Really great info.
Also Gamers dont get caught mid game and have to disable sticky keys. It's in settings > ease of access > keyboard
GODDAMMIT STICKY KEYS
Happened to me; just lost my chicken dinner
Yeah, so annoying...
or shift 5 times
For a second I thought I was on the RUclips main page and it recommended me one of your old videos again :D
so did i. they made a video like this a while back.
I set up a few new computers every week at work. (I work for a small IT company.)
- The first thing I always do is disable Windows animations. It baffles me that nobody else ever seems to do this. (Start>"animations">Show animations in Windows*)
- Then enable single-click mode so I'm not double-clicking a thousand times for absolutely no reason. (Start>"single">Specify single- or double-click to open)
- Hide Cortana and the other useless Taskbar icons
- Disable Cortana notifications
- Install any necessary drivers
- Update Windows
- Uninstall all the bloatware, such as the pointless games that clog up the Start Menu
- Then I launch Chrome Installer (Microsoft calls it "Edge") and, like the presenter here, use Ninite to get Chrome and a few others and then set Chrome as the default browser
- If it's a notebook computer, I fix the featurebug that puts the computer to sleep when the lid is closed (Start>"lid">Change what closing the lid does)
- If it's a computer I plan to use, I always install CoreTemp and display the CPU temp in the Taskbar, but I'm a bit obsessive.
- Create a restore point once setup is complete
- There are other things, but nobody will read this anyway, so I'll stop here.
*Sometimes Windows won't suggest that when I type "animations". Sometimes it will suggest partway through the word. Sometimes, backspacing one letter at a time will get it to suggest.
hi i actually read every single word of your instructions thank you for them , what i wanna ask you is that i still have windows 8 on my laptop and i don't know if i should update it to windows 10 p.s am not a gamer i only use it for college and to watch movies
@@khalidbrown9951 Windows 10 seems more stable and faster than 8 and has a lot of nice quality of life improvements. You can download a Windows 10 ISO right from Microsoft and put it onto a USB flash drive if you want to do a clean upgrade to Windows 10.
The free upgrade path is officially closed, but they haven't stopped activating systems that have a valid product key for Windows 7 or 8.
Your computer probably has a mechanical hard drive. If so, your best course is to buy an SSD (you can get a 500 GB MX500 for about $70), replace your current drive with it, and install Windows 10 on that. This way, no matter what happens, you'll still have your original Windows 8 installation if you need it and you won't lose any files. Additionally, using an SSD will yield an enormous performance improvement.
You can buy a USB HDD enclosure if you want to access your old hard drive without putting it back inside your computer.
Wow great tips I also read every single one and implemented :D You said there are other things and I want to ask you to tell me!
What is a restore point?
@@devious5348 Something like a Saving Point in a Video Game. You can just jump back if something unexpected happens.
Jesus, thanks for that "This PC" shortcut.
WIN+E
edit ooh it's another thing.
Dude, really?
I miss win7 :)
smart ass
Every time I reinstall, I always look up this vid for tips or to check if I haven't missed anything. Thanks!
This PC Shortcut and disk cleanup are new to me, thanks for those!
Just came across your video and thank you so much for the tutorial lesson. Much appreciated!!
I'm new to the whole Tech Syndicate thing but I'm loving the videos and the website!
Great video, thanks! Instead of playing around the registry for open with option, you can just hit Ctrl+left click on the mouse and the open with will pop up 👍👍
Great information. I especially liked the reg edit for photo viewer.
Used to watch the tek faithfully haven't been on your channel since the last one. I'm happy to see you even though this is a year ago that you guys are still going strong, still use your homemade mayo recipe!
"You're probably watching this video is because you just reinstalled windows"
ME: Nope, I'm just lazy and I'm doing this 7 month later after install.
Ay
Thanks dude. A couple of things in there i dont normally do which may be helpful.
Glad you have done another Logan
(just subscribed).. Love this video.. I like the way that you think, and of course the tweaks, the knowledge and intuitiveness of it all. Thanks and have a great day !!! Tek Syndicate Rocks !! - Keith (major market on-air talent)
Great Video You taught me few new tricks Thank you again for sharing
Just built a new gaming PC and this was very helpful. Thank you :)
I had a list for a fresh install but this is better, thanks
Thank you so much!! I'm so amazed that there's so much that I didn't know 😱
Here's a neat one I use after a clean install. Admin CMD, type "powercfg -h off" without the quotes. This disables hibernation and can free up a few GB'a of space and in some cases 20GB
We had a client computer come in that had C: drive full warnings. Didn't take long to figure out that the System Restore size was set to 90% of the drive. I know that's not really related to Hibernate, but at first I remembered it as a Hibernate misconfiguration.
I'm going to recommend a program called WinDirStat. It shows what every folder/application size is and allows you to delete it. Great if you want to find whats taking up the most storage.
Great tips *thanks* especially bringing back the old Photo Viewer - that's excellent to know!
VERY helpful video man thanks a lot.
Thank you sooooo much. Amazing video !
Great information, Thanks
I love these types of videos where you guys sort of show us your setting set ups. Wouldn't mind another Foobar setup video
Nate I. The beauty of foobar is that almost nothing has changed
Thanks man! Great video!
Great video man! Thanks a lot! Can we get a part 2? liked + Favorited
I've been using Vuze for torrents for 5-6 years now and it's been amazing! Really fast and very easy to use
Love this! Thanks!
Realy useful video, thanks a lot.
thanks for a very good video on this topic, i learned quite a few new things :)
Dude great video! Thank you!
Thank you for a great tutorial!
Brilliant, thank you very helpful 🤘
Great video! Just to add one more thing to clean up space on your HDD, if your not using a laptop or don't plan on using hibernate, you will find a very large hibernate file in the root of your system drive if you unhide protected system items. Just run this to remove the file and disable hibernate c:\>powercfg.exe /hibernate off
Great video so much I didn't know
Thank you very much! Have. A great day
Thanks man for the vids
You really should NOT instructs ANYONE to use uTorrent 2.2.1 there are major unpatched security vulnerabilities. Basically allows injection into downloaded files.
What should I use then? I have been using 2.2.1 since it released.
I suggest PicoTorrent or qBittorrent.
Btw you can fiddle with settings on newer utorrent and get rid of all the ads
Wicked Potato, you can but then you would have already installed their malware on your PC. So good luck with that.
BriniaSona qbittorrent is a good, free, opensource option
great video thanks!
Thanks a lot. you are my hero
This video has come at a perfect time. I had upgraded from 7 to 10 originally, the had reinstall for reasons (7 and 10), now I have to reinstall again but now I have a clean 10.
I love videos like this!
Nice video!
Thanks guys for the tip with WINITE ... Broke my whole system ... Much appreciated.
Great video!!!
Cheers Logan, a few good idea's there
great vid thanks!! where has Nenite been my whole pc career!!!?????
I do appreciate this.
I really appreciate the File Explorer tip for _This PC_ . That always bothered me the most about Win 10
Thank you!
Yo that purple is actually slick. I didnt know you could individually edit the little bars under each icon.
7:12 or what you can do is go the *start menu > **_click on the gear icon_** > go into settings > Apps > **_in the left column_** > default apps > **_click on Photo Viewer_** > **_and change it to_** photo gallery*
i liked this video mearly on the fact you use PIA , which ive been using for years :D
THANK YOU ! Love the video very useful and straight forward just the way I like it.
For this vid you got a subscribe from me. Thanks.
When you first install window, what to do. Disable like 50 things Window seems to think you want. Then install everything you actually want.
Yep but though it applies to every Windows version It applies 50 times more in Win 10
Thank you, I'm glad quick access is gone now. Also wasn't aware Cortana could be hidden now.
Great video
I switched to MPC-BE from VLC last year and it's definitely my preferred player now.
Nice Info
I would recomend using the Chocolatey package manager instead of ninite. It's pretty easy to just type `choco install ` when you need something installed on the box, and to use `choco upgrade all` when you want to install updates.
Great video thank you! I also I stall StartIsBack right away.
I literally already do almost 90% of the things you mentioned.
Additional Suggestions.
1. If you are using 2 or more monitors install Display Fusion, preferably from their website to avoid the Steam DRM, but I did to get the full paid version at a price that is worth it to me so I can say that it hasn't caused any issues for me.
2. Alternate suggestion to Ninite if you are willing to deal with a learning curve. Chocolatey is a package manager for Windows that has a free and pro version and like many Linux package managers has a command line version but also a GUI version called, what else, Chocolatey GUI. Not only can it install a list of software to your machine (only to the default locations on free version) but it can quickly update all of them with the simple command "choco upgrade all -y". You do have to be aware that the packages, also like Linux, are maintained by the community.
3. Classic Shell: CS is still a better start menu than the default one and is continually updated to keep up with changes in the UI. It also makes it easy to get to the Default Start Menu when you need to.
4. Download and install Data Recovery Program: It is good to download these programs BEFORE you lose data you need to recover as adding it when you need it can actually write over parts, if not all, of the data you are trying to recover.
5. Download and install an alternative Task Manager: There are times where the Windows Task Manager won't be enough or it will not launch to a running program. Alternatives like System Explorer will tend to work when they don't and visa versa. Not a huge problem but it has saved my ass several times when software crashed hard or hardware/drivers were giving me issues. Then again I prefer System Explorer to the Task Manager anyway.
6. Turn extensions back on in File Explorer.
7. Add "Everything", the search tool that searches "Everything" on your computer. Windows search is so limited it should be removed, especially if you have "God Mode" activated on your machine. Especially if you have Wox, which uses Everything, or Launchy installed.
8. If you want to maximize your C: Drive's space also move "Documents" off of it.
9. Add a Clipboard Manager: Seriously how is it it is almost 2020 and Windows does not come with a safe, secure, and powerful Clipboard Manager yet?
10. Install Lockhunter for those damn files that get stuck locked or are unnecessarily locked by some process.
11. Install Ultracopier: With my system it helps speed up copies of large files or groups of files over the default. Your success may vary, especially since the April Update.
Great suggestions! Came here to suggest Chocolatey but you beat me to it. Another thing I'd suggest is using something like XNview instead of reg editing in the old image gallery.
I don't understand why Chocolaty has so many problems that Homebrew for Mac does not. It's understandable why Linux package management is superior to both, but Chocolatey is the only one I frequently get errors in.
praetorxyn really? I don't think I've ever had an error with chocolatey. Just batch install from a file after installing Windows and have it auto update all on login via a script and I never have to see it again until I want to install or modify something.
Prefer using ultramon, having a "flick to other monitor" is damn useful.
Really thank you for the sugestions. Even tho this just shows how weak windows 10 is.
5:37 here you are wrong... Be careful! Using older versions of torrent can lead to leak some stuff and also let hackers in. I would advice you to use qBittorent or any other open-source torrent client because they have 0 ads. Cheers!
Which is the best ad free application for torrents? QBitorrent?
Arsh Chopra Its a matter of taste, but if you likr utorrent interface i would say qbittorrent. If you prefer something morr minimalistic, maybe transmition.
Solid guide, I do the same, apart from ninite, I've got all my distro's on external hdd
Great Tip!!
Man, i love you
PIA is awesome I've used it for 2 years now!
I prefer Deluge as a torrent client (no bloat, very basic like utorrent was long ago) or Transmission for Synology is great too
I tried Deluge, It was very sluggish and unstable, had to switch to qBittorrent.
I use Tixati, very lightweight
qbittorrent is also good
LOL ninite is such a cool website, didn't know this exist, that's really helpful
I recommend running a single gle core VM via Hyper V or VMware 6 with a low grade OS (Ubuntu, Windows 7 for ARM64 or itanium) and run transmission for torrent needs. With VMware fusion enabled you can use the VM's program assets natively on primary OS desktop.
WOW! Thanks for telling us about Ninite ! It's pretty useful for downloading all of the familiar free software that you need every time you install a fresh windows.
Finally!!!
Going from 'quick access' to 'this pc' is a game changer. Quick access would usually lock up for a couple seconds. Even deleting the quick access link in the taskbar, and replacing it with another folder. It'd still do quick access on me xD
I would absolutely recommend qBittorrent instead of uTorrent!
Haha I do similar things when I reinstall Windows. I used to use StartIsBack but like you mentioned in one of the comments below, I don't use the start menu much either. Most of my regularly access applications are pinned to the taskbar. Otherwise I just hit the Windows Key and type in whatever program I need, it's quite simple really.
For torrents you can use Deluge. Super good stuff man.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.......
from 6:12 to 6:40 ; Thanks!
8:40 I'm British, and may I just say, that accent you just did, was actually rather splendid, dear boy.
We need a 2020 version of this (Edge and Cortana needs to go).
Install LTSC homie
Why not just use qbittorrent?
John Tantay it's not bad. I tried it and I also liked haulite, but I'm happier with the old uTorrent. EDIT - So many people keep saying this that I gave it another chance beside my old uTorrent 2.2.1... In my testing tonight the old uTorrent has been faster and more reliable. I kept getting disk errors with qbittorrent, I'll look into it more. Otherwise they are about the same imo, I just like that old uTorrent, but the newer version are basically a virus.
Some time ago transmission was ported to windows. Maybe gui is weird but app is excellent.
Krzysztof As I've always liked that on Linux. I might see how it is.
I use Transmission QT. In my experience it's faster than uTorrent ever was.
What about Deluge ?
i love you man cool vid 👍👍
Thanks! A couple of these things I wasn't aware of. Ninite is really cool
Thanks for the godmode hack. I didn't know about this
Brought me back from back in the day with the NINIT site. I been using APPLE hardware for some time.
very nice
There is a version of the powershell command that keeps the store btw.
Great video I do about 70% of that everytime I reinstall windows
🤓 Thx for the cheat sheet, theres a few other things I cud suggest but let me think about it and make a list, for example I recently finally finished downgrading all my computers to Windows7 and added a few logical partitions at the end of my D drive for Peppermint 9 💻🍭😍
I can see this handy, lot of usefull stuff i didnt know about. 🤔
You can just move your downloads folder and pretty much all your user folders to another drive or location like you would any other folder, windows will remap its location. I do this so that I can wipe windows whenever and keep all my stuff without having to worry about backing stuff up, plus if you are using a smaller SSD, it will free up a bit more space. I even have the desktop on a separate drive as well as downloads, documents, pictures etc, mind you that's on another NVMe drive to keep it quick on bootup.
Thanks man
You're welcome
I'm gonna have to do this soon. The update earlier this year (or maybe even last year) removed the store and all it's apps. I can't even use the calculator anymore
you forgot about your adblocker lol
sign into Firefox sync
ublock origin
good stuff
How on earth did you not select the application called everything. It is literally the most useful app I have ever used in my life. It is definitely an essential tool if you work with files at all and are not always the most organised person or you just can't remember where you saved something
I believe the app you're referring to is called Search Everything. And yes, it is a great app to find stuff! It is what Microsoft search should have been.
For torrents try Deluge.
