    I like to use ShareX for my screenshots. Print Screen captures whole screen, Alt+Print Screen captures active window and ctrl + Print Screen captures desired area.

    My priority software list: Fast Stone Image Viewer, MPC-BE (Media player classic - black edition), Lightshot - screenshot tool, MSI afterburner for keeping my GPU fans non-idle, SyncBack Free for backups, LibreOffice, SumatraPDF viewer, Gimp 2, TreeSize, NAPS2 ocr, XMPlay music player (un4seen) and some mentioned in the video.

    About mods for games giving you grief on Linux (given we're probably talking about wine/proton), one of the big offenders is case-sensitivity of path/filename. Windows ignores case, Linux and whatever filesystem you're on interprets Uppercase.file and lowercase.file as two different files. Next time you create an ext4 partition remember to turn on selective casefolding, which enables you to mark directories as case-insensitive. Been doing this since the feature was introduced and it completely circumvents the problem. Writing up a howto is a bit much for a youtube comment, the terms to search for are "linux ext4 casefolding".

      One of the most difficult things about switching to linux.. also, using alt + backspace instead of ctrl + backspace to go back one word is sooooo annoying lol.

    • @johnathanmcdoe
      @johnathanmcdoe 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@quintit Do you mean going back as in to delete the last word left of the pointer? If so give ctrl + w a try, I find that a lot more ergonomic than reaching for backspace. Moving the pointer one word back would be alt + b though. (I'm just guessing that whatever you're using is based on GNU readline, otherwise those shortcuts might do nothing or something different)

    I like Windows Commander. Any old version is fine. I've been using it since back in the day, when it was Total Commander. For video media, VLC player. For music, good old WinAmp v2.95. Though more often I stream my local preferred classic rock station. And Greenshot. It's simple and effective. I used to use it a lot when I had to make workflow instructions for work, making screenshots of our ERP-system and adding in bullet points and such.

    I always love seeing a list like this, and seeing mostly the stuff I use. Nice to know I'm still using the right stuff. Haha.
    Though, cherrytree is my favorite list, but it is not on mobile. It's hierarchal note taking, so you can have subnotes, collapse them if there's too much on the screen. It's not checklist focused or anything, so it feels more like a place for my ideas, rather than a list that wants to pester me to complete things.

    • @teksyndicate

    Oh, one more trick if you use Open-shell start menu, If you can see through the taskbar (like moving a window under taskbar threshold line and that windows on a percentage is visible under the line (see through)), than if using Winamp with Milkdrop plugin and use it desktop mode, before you start the plugin, hide the taskbar, run the plugin inside winamp, unhide taskbar, and voila, you have a taskbar visualisation, so you can maximize your windows, you will still be in the disco. ;) Rock on! Greetings from Hungary.

      It's really simple... FL Studio doesn't really work... and my premium virtual instruments just don't work at all. So, making music is far better on Windows. Otherwise, modding Morrowind and Skyrim... that was a complete failure for me, so I gave up. I also found that I spent about 90% more time fussing with the interface, customizing, and fixing little OS things... which is amazing, but also takes up so much of my time. I'm too pragmatic and just want to work on my music and play my games. I do that more than I look at the OS.

    • @deusxyz

      i think linux def has time sinks when it comes to fixing or fiddling with things 😆 the music thing, i had the same issue with lmms plugins, music sounds are very important to get right
      coding however on linux is alot easier imo 🤔 and automating workflow with bash and things

    Talking about music: MP3tag, maybe you want to rearrange track number by date when you discover new music and wanna listen it in the order you discover it (like in soundcloud) but they come with the tracknumber already embedded, well you can change that in just simple steps. You can even rename, maybe you have tons of tracks and wanna rename them using the metadata like first the year, or first the artist, or first album or first artist; I really love it, make playlisting easy and simple.

      Other stuff that probably lots of people already know / use.
      JPEGview
      Sharex
      Audacity (I use it for making music "louder")
      Sumatra PDF (use it to read some weird "PDF" formats *.epub)
      Mousotron (Im an obsesive person when it comes down to have records of everything, pictures, music, mouse clicks)
      Flawless widescreed (For people with ultrawide screens, and game)
      Smartcontrol (is a philips utility that allows to control most of the settings of the monitor even if is not philips brand, I'm using it with an LG ultrawide monitor, so instead of using the joystick button just use smartcontrol)

    Thank you for acknowledging the upsides and downsides of certain software (mainly Discord and Windows.) Yes in a perfect world we would all be on Linux, but it unfortunately is not ideal for every use case. That doesn't mean we give up either, however. We try it everywhere, and use it where it fits. I will indeed mention to everyone I know that I would like to use Signal for direct messaging and small group chats, but until they give in, it is Discord for now.
    Unrelated note, please show me more Foobar, I have a completely stock install and I am always clearing and reloading songs onto a playlist, and I know that isn't the correct use but I know no other way!

    Cool video, I installed a few things you mentionned to test it. I think Power Toys would be worth doing a video about it, looks complex.
    One utility software I find cool: spacesniffer (for manually cleaning your hard drive and finding potential bloat/heavy files, really neat).
    I switched from Linux to windows for the same reason, can’t use ableton and vsts. You got super good daws on Linux though, like renoise, bigwig and reaper.

    Me myself and I are close to moving fully to Linux. Just waiting for a few little features and fixes such as better Multi monitor support, better VRR, and HDR support. The first 2 are already being fleshed out under Wayland and HDR will be coming soon, maybe in Plasma6.
    Not happy about being forced to use Windows+apps atm, but got no choice if I want smooth experience with features I want.

    MusicBee is the best audio player out there, bar none. It's the only Windows software I use on Linux, because nothing else compares. As a matter of fact, nothing else compares on any OS.
    I used to use foobar2000 a decade or so ago. It's a great music player, but I needed a lot of plugins just to get to how I like it. MusicBee does everything out of the box, with no plugins required, and it's not bloated.

    Hi Tek, new subscriber here, you hinted at this in the past but could you make a tutorial on how to manage game folders, launchers and all of that stuff? I'd like to understand how to properly manage my folders both on my SSD and Hard drive.

    • @teksyndicate
      @teksyndicate  11 месяцев назад

      Well, a lot of this depends on what launcher you are using... Steam, GoG, etc. My only real rule is to not install them into the program files directory... otherwise modding can be very annoying. I usually just have a "games" folder somewhere and install everything there.

    • @quintit
      @quintit 10 месяцев назад +1

      If the installer gives you the option, dont install it into program files, like teksyndicate already said. Create a programs folder somewhere. or just opt for the portable version of appliations whenever possible.

      It's about 6-7/10 for me. I found musicbee to be slightly better... but none of them come close to Foobar when I consider the plugins I am using and such. For instance... after using my add-ons, I use it to convert things to opus easily, and it supports about 50 different native video game music formats, and I use it as a media server that supports foobar on my android phone.... so I can listen from anywhere.

    I'd say hardware is more important than software, because without the hardware what do you have? just a conceptual pile of 1's an 0s floating in the ether. You don't even have hardware to store those 1s and 0s, let alone execute them

    • @MarauderShields
      @MarauderShields 11 месяцев назад

      I think his point was that hardware is a means to an end. Logan has talked about this idea before, I think in one of his videos about frequently upgrading hardware, and the point is that what you really do on a computer is interface with software (games, utilities, the operating system) and you should build your computer to meet your software needs. Right now I game on a machine built with an i7 3770k, ASUS P8Z68-V PRO motherboard, and a GTX 980 hooked up to a Sony Trinitron G400 CRT monitor and I'm still running Windows 7 pro. This isn't my primary computer but it suits my gaming needs/interests for the time being. I have so many old games available to me, and some new ones still play well too. The great thing about gaming on this machine with a CRT is I can lower the resolution to 800x600 and game at a high frame rate while still having a crispy image, whereas on a modern display that would be blurry as all heck. I've been playing Quake 2 Enhanced this way just for the novelty of it.

    • @Flackon
      @Flackon 11 месяцев назад

      @@MarauderShields I agree, although I'd phrase it more as "you should get the only the hardware you expect to need and no more" rather than "software is less important than hardware blah blah".
